Use a color converter to translate a color between formats, a picker to sample or choose it, and a complementary-color generator to build related palette options. The practical workflow is simple: enter or sample a color, confirm its color space, generate a complement, check the actual foreground and background contrast, then export the result for web, design, or print.
These tools do not all produce one universally “correct” answer. A web HEX value normally represents sRGB, CMYK depends on a print profile, and a complementary color changes according to the color model used.

Color converter
A converter changes a color’s encoding or coordinate system. It does not necessarily change the intended color, although rounding, gamut limits, profiles, and display conditions can alter the result.

| Format | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| HEX | CSS, web design, quick sharing | Usually represents sRGB channels |
| RGB | Screens, CSS, digital graphics | RGB is incomplete without a color space such as sRGB or Display-P3 |
| HSL | Simple hue, saturation, and lightness adjustments | Its lightness is not perceptual brightness |
| HSV/HSB | Image editors and color pickers | Value or brightness is not HSL lightness |
| HWB | CSS color manipulation | Less familiar outside web workflows |
| CMYK | Commercial printing | Meaningful output requires a destination profile |
| LAB | Color analysis and controlled adjustments | Not perfectly perceptually uniform |
| XYZ | Technical colorimetric interchange | Not intuitive for everyday palette design |
| LCH | Cylindrical Lab-style palette work | Gamut and hue behavior still require care |
| OKLab/OKLCH | Modern perceptual palette adjustments | Software and export support varies |
| Display-P3 | Wide-gamut digital displays | The entire delivery path must preserve the wider gamut |
CSS Color Level 4 documents sRGB, Display-P3, modern CSS color syntax, and gamut behavior.
Color picker
A picker can select a color in several ways:
- Color wheel: Choose a hue, then adjust saturation, lightness, value, or brightness.
- Screen eyedropper: Sample a rendered pixel from a webpage or desktop.
- Image picker: Extract dominant or representative colors from a photograph or reference image.
- Numeric picker: Paste a HEX, RGB, HSL, or modern CSS value and inspect the resulting swatch.
An eyedropper samples what is rendered on a particular display. It may differ from the underlying CSS value or source image because of calibration, transparency, compression, anti-aliasing, filters, HDR, and wide-gamut rendering.
Complementary-color generator
A complementary color is usually positioned opposite the base hue on a selected color wheel. Adobe’s Color Wheel supports complementary and other harmony types, including analogous, monochromatic, triadic, and related schemes.

Quick workflow
- Enter or pick the base color. Paste a HEX value, use a wheel, sample an image, or select a screen pixel.
- Confirm the source space. Treat ordinary web HEX and RGB as sRGB unless the source explicitly identifies another space.
- Inspect useful formats. Use HEX or RGB for common CSS, HSL for simple hue manipulation, and LAB, LCH, or OKLCH for more controlled palette adjustments.
- Generate a complement. Start with a 180-degree hue rotation.
- Explore alternatives. Compare split-complementary, analogous, triadic, and monochromatic palettes.
- Assign design roles. Decide which colors are for surfaces, text, accents, borders, buttons, hover states, focus indicators, or illustrations.
- Check actual contrast. Test every foreground/background combination rather than judging the swatches by hue alone.
- Simulate color-vision deficiencies. Make sure meaning is not communicated by color alone.
- Export for the destination. Use CSS variables or JSON for digital products and profile-aware values for print.
- Document the source space and profile. This prevents an approximate conversion from being treated as a universal specification.
HEX, RGB, HSL, and HSV explained
HEX to RGB
A six-digit HEX value has three hexadecimal channel pairs:
#RRGGBB
Each pair represents an 8-bit channel from 0 to 255:
#FF0000 = RGB(255, 0, 0)
#336699 = RGB(51, 102, 153)
The three-digit CSS form expands by repeating each digit:

- Color mixing guide: the color wheel shows color, from basic principles and color mixing results on the front side; Spin around the paint wheel, then you will find the color mixture results in the windows, to learn the color theory in a fun way
- Color leaning tool: the backside of the color artist wheel that visually illustrates relationships between colors and demonstrates the results features a grayscale, and triad colors tints and tones, definitions of color terms, and illustrations of color, such as complementary colors, and triad colors
- Easy to use: this color mix guide consists of 3 layers, made of reliable cardboard with smooth surface and smooth rotation; And the size is moderate, easy to operate and carry
- Wide application: the relationship wheel is suitable to use when painting, quilting, interior design, having creative craft projects, and home decorating; Suitable for artists, teachers, kids, painters, designers, and tattoo learners
#F80 → #FF8800
In web contexts, HEX normally encodes sRGB RGB channels. It is not an entirely color-space-independent value.
RGB to HSL
HSL uses hue, saturation, and lightness. Hue is generally measured from 0 to 360 degrees; saturation and lightness are usually percentages. HSL is convenient because rotating hue or changing lightness is easy to understand, but equal numerical steps do not create equal perceived changes. A yellow and a blue with the same HSL lightness can appear very different in brightness.
RGB to HSV or HSB
HSV and HSB generally describe the same cylindrical model. Its value or brightness is based on the maximum RGB channel, not HSL’s lightness. A tool that offers both should label them clearly; their coordinates should not be substituted casually.
How to generate a complementary color
Basic HSL complement
The simplest method converts the base color to HSL, adds 180 degrees to its hue, wraps the result at 360 degrees, and retains or adjusts saturation and lightness.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBase: HSL(30, 100%, 50%)
Complement: HSL(210, 100%, 50%)
function complementaryHsl(h, s, l) {
return { h: (h + 180) % 360, s, l };
}
This is a useful wheel-based complement, not necessarily the most balanced or accessible partner.
RGB channel inversion
A separate operation inverts each RGB channel:
R' = 255 - R
G' = 255 - G
B' = 255 - B
RGB(255, 0, 0) → RGB(0, 255, 255)
function invertedRgb(r, g, b) {
return { r: 255 - r, g: 255 - g, b: 255 - b };
}
Label this result inverted RGB or channel inverse. It should not automatically be called the perceptually correct complementary color.
Perceptual and design-oriented complements
A more advanced workflow can rotate hue in OKLCH or another perceptual space, preserve a target lightness, and reduce chroma when the result falls outside the destination gamut. It can then offer a vivid complement, muted complement, accessible alternative, and print-safe approximation.
Rank #3
- This package include one Creative Color Mixing Board with one regular Color Wheel (9.25 inch).
- Easy-to-use tool that visually illustrates relationships between colors and demonstrates the results Features a grayscale, tints and tones, definitions of color terms, and illustrations of color.
- Color Wheel helps show which colors are complimentary, and how they go (or don't go) together.
- Some people know instinctively, and others need a visual tool to help them choose.
- Two sided wheel with indicators for complementary, split complementary and triad color schemes, how to tint and shade, primary, secondary and tertiary references, and more.
If a color is outside sRGB, CMYK, or another destination gamut, it must be mapped or clipped. The result may become duller, lighter, darker, or shifted in hue. A good tool shows the source color, destination approximation, gamut warning, and destination space or profile.

Why a complement may fail accessibility
Complementary colors can create strong chromatic opposition while still producing poor text readability. WCAG evaluates text contrast primarily through relative luminance, not color-wheel distance.
The WCAG 2.2 thresholds are:
| Content | Level AA | Level AAA |
|---|---|---|
| Normal text | 4.5:1 | 7:1 |
| Large text | 3:1 | 4.5:1 |
These thresholds apply according to the text size, weight, content status, and relevant success criterion. Do not describe a palette as accessible merely because it contains contrasting hues.
For two opaque sRGB colors, contrast is calculated as:
contrast ratio = (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05)
where L1 is the lighter relative luminance and L2 is the darker one. The channel conversion and luminance procedure are documented in the W3C’s G18 technique:
function linearize(c8) {
const c = c8 / 255;
return c <= 0.04045
? c / 12.92
: Math.pow((c + 0.055) / 1.055, 2.4);
}
function luminance([r, g, b]) {
const R = linearize(r);
const G = linearize(g);
const B = linearize(b);
return 0.2126 * R + 0.7152 * G + 0.0722 * B;
}
function contrastRatio(color1, color2) {
const l1 = luminance(color1);
const l2 = luminance(color2);
const lighter = Math.max(l1, l2);
const darker = Math.min(l1, l2);
return (lighter + 0.05) / (darker + 0.05);
}
Check body text, headings, links, buttons, placeholder text, borders, focus indicators, hover states, disabled states, and dark-mode equivalents. For transparency, gradients, images, shadows, or overlays, test the rendered result against the actual background.
Color-vision simulation helps identify problems, but it is not an accessibility certification. Use labels, patterns, shapes, and text so that color is never the only carrier of meaning.

RGB-to-CMYK: why one answer is not enough
RGB describes additive light for screens; CMYK describes subtractive ink for printing. A mathematical conversion can provide a rough estimate, but production output depends on the ink set, paper, press or printer, total ink coverage, rendering intent, and color-management settings.
A CMYK value without a profile can therefore be misleading. For commercial work, use the printer’s supplied ICC profile and review a proof. A browser converter is suitable for planning or discussion, not automatically for final press specifications.

Web color variables
Suppose the base color is #336699. Its ordinary web interpretation is sRGB:
:root {
--brand: #336699;
--brand-rgb: 51 102 153;
--brand-hsl: 210 50% 40%;
}
Use the HEX or sRGB RGB value when compatibility and predictable web delivery matter. Use modern functions such as oklch() only when the browser, design software, export path, and fallback strategy support them.
A blue complement that is too harsh
A vivid 180-degree rotation may produce a highly saturated orange. That can work as an accent but may be uncomfortable as a large surface or fail as text. Keep the hue relationship, then reduce chroma, alter lightness, and test the intended roles. A complementary pair does not need identical saturation or lightness.
Image-derived palette for a dashboard
Extract several colors from the image, then assign them semantic roles rather than using every swatch directly. Choose a stable surface and text color first, reserve saturated colors for accents or status indicators, and check contrast for each dashboard state. If red and green communicate status, add labels or icons as well.
Print approximation
Convert the screen color to the printer’s specified CMYK profile, check gamut warnings, and compare a proof. Do not copy a generic CMYK triplet into a brand specification without recording the profile and print condition.

Canva’s Color Wheel is aimed at quick RGB-based online palette exploration. Adobe Color is useful for harmony exploration, image extraction, saved palettes, and Adobe workflows. Coolors advertises broad format conversion, harmonies, variations, color-vision simulation, contrast checks, and export-oriented features. Lightweight services such as Color Converter Tool and Color Hex Lab may be convenient, but treat their format coverage and privacy claims as features to verify rather than assumptions.
Troubleshooting
The tool rejects my value
Check the required syntax, remove spaces or unsupported alpha notation, and confirm whether the tool expects percentages, decimals, or 8-bit integers. A modern CSS function may not be accepted by an older converter.
Recommended Free Tools
The same color gives different results in two tools
Compare the source space, white point, precision, rounding, alpha handling, and gamut mapping. “RGB” without a named space is not enough to reproduce a result reliably.
The complement looks too bright or harsh
That is common with saturated wheel-based pairs. Reduce chroma, change lightness, or use a muted split-complementary palette. Keep the vivid version for a small accent rather than a full background.
The complement fails contrast
Change the foreground/background roles, adjust lightness, or choose a neutral text color. Do not rely on hue rotation alone. Test the exact text size and weight used in the interface.
A wide-gamut color becomes dull after export
Check whether the destination supports Display-P3 or OKLCH, whether the file embeds the intended profile, and whether the receiving application converts to sRGB. Compare the original and in-gamut approximation instead of silently treating them as identical.
The eyedropper does not match the CSS or image source
Sample the source value directly when possible. Screen sampling captures the rendered pixel, which may include anti-aliasing, opacity, browser processing, filters, compression, or display-management changes.
The print proof differs from the screen
Confirm the monitor and document profiles, printer ICC profile, paper condition, rendering intent, and proofing method. Screen RGB and printed CMYK are different reproduction conditions.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Is the source color space known?
- Is the destination medium—web, app, screen, or print—known?
- Was the complement method identified?
- Are the colors assigned to clear semantic roles?
- Does each actual text/background pair meet the relevant WCAG threshold?
- Does the design remain understandable without color alone?
- Were gradients, transparency, focus states, and dark mode tested?
- Was gamut mapping checked for sRGB, Display-P3, CMYK, or another destination?
- Is the exported value in the format the destination expects?
- For print, is the ICC profile and proof condition documented?
