Photoshop remains one of the strongest tools for digital painting, photo manipulation, compositing, and professional client work in 2026—but it is not the best value for everyone. In the United States, the full Photoshop desktop plan starts at $22.99 per month when billed annually, while photographers may get better value from the $19.99-per-month Photography plan. Painters who need Adobe compatibility, advanced compositing, and a mature brush-and-layer workflow have good reasons to subscribe; occasional editors may save money with Affinity by Canva, GIMP, Krita, or Photopea.
Prices and plan details below were checked August 16, 2026. Adobe pricing, promotions, availability, taxes, renewal terms, and features can vary by country, account, platform, and subscriber status.
Photoshop pricing in 2026
Adobe’s Photoshop lineup is easier to misunderstand than its headline prices suggest. The key distinction is whether a plan includes the full desktop application, only web and mobile access, Lightroom, or the wider Creative Cloud catalog.

See Adobe’s current Photoshop plans and terms before subscribing. A displayed promotion is not a permanent price, and the regular renewal cost is the figure to use when comparing long-term value.
What Photoshop actually costs over a year
- Photoshop standalone: $22.99 × 12 = approximately $275.88 before tax.
- Photoshop annual prepaid: $263.88 per year, equivalent to $21.99 per month before tax.
- Photography: $19.99 × 12 = approximately $239.88 before tax.
- Creative Cloud Pro: $69.99 × 12 = approximately $839.88 before tax at the regular price.
The $19.99 Photography plan is potentially the best Adobe value for photographers because it costs less than standalone Photoshop while adding Lightroom, 1TB of storage, and substantially more monthly generative credits. Check that it is available to new subscribers under the current terms in your region.
Which Photoshop plan should painters buy?
Choose Photoshop standalone if you need desktop painting and compositing
This is the clearest choice for digital artists, illustrators, designers, and painters who need the full desktop application but do not need Lightroom or every Adobe application. It includes the professional layer, mask, brush, typography, filter, smart-object, plugin, action, and automation tools associated with Photoshop.
It is also the safest plan when a client, studio, school, or employer expects native PSD files and Adobe-specific workflows.
Choose the Photography plan if you also manage photographs
Photographers and painter-photographers should strongly consider Photography. Lightroom handles cataloging, RAW development, and large photo libraries; Photoshop handles detailed retouching, painting over photographs, masks, and composites. The plan includes 1TB rather than 100GB of listed cloud storage and 1,000 rather than 25 monthly generative credits.
Choose Creative Cloud Pro if you use several Adobe applications
Creative Cloud Pro makes sense for agencies, freelancers, and designers who regularly use Photoshop alongside Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects, or other included applications. It is poor value for someone who opens Photoshop alone. Do not base the decision on the first three months of a promotion; compare the regular $69.99 monthly renewal price with your actual workload.

Choose Firefly Pro only if web and mobile access is enough
Firefly Pro is easy to confuse with full Photoshop because the comparison includes Photoshop. Adobe lists Photoshop web and mobile access, not the full desktop application, in this $19.99-per-month plan. It suits creators focused on generative tools and lightweight cross-device editing, not painters working on large layered PSD files, plugins, actions, or demanding desktop composites.
What Photoshop includes in 2026
Desktop Photoshop
The desktop application is still the main professional version. For painting and image-making, its strengths include layered documents, customizable brushes, selections, masks, blend modes, adjustment layers, channels, paths, filters, smart objects, typography, color work, actions, plugins, and extensive automation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Photoshop is especially useful when a painted image combines scanned artwork, photographs, 3D or rendered elements, text, adjustment layers, and client revisions. Its depth can be excessive for simple edits, but it reduces the need to move between applications on complex projects.
Web, iPad, mobile, and cloud documents
Photoshop is available across desktop, web, iPad, iPhone, and Android surfaces, though the tools and entitlements are not identical. Web and mobile versions are useful for reviewing cloud documents, making quick edits, starting ideas, and continuing work away from a main computer. They should not be treated as one-for-one replacements for desktop Photoshop on complex professional projects.
Adobe describes its mobile and web direction in its Photoshop mobile and web announcement. Verify the current feature and premium-access table for your plan before assuming that a desktop tool is available on a phone or tablet.
Storage
The Photoshop plan lists 100GB of cloud storage; Photography lists 1TB. Cloud storage is not unlimited local disk space. Large PSDs, cloud documents, linked assets, and multiple versions can consume capacity quickly, so keep local backups and archive completed work independently.

Generative AI: useful, but not unlimited
Photoshop’s Firefly-powered tools can assist with Generative Fill, Generative Expand, object removal, background creation, and other AI-assisted editing. Their biggest advantage is integration: a generated result can be combined with masks, layers, blend modes, manual brushwork, and traditional compositing in the same document.
However, “AI included” does not mean every AI feature is unlimited. The displayed monthly allowances are:
- Photoshop standalone: 25 credits.
- Photography: 1,000 credits.
- Firefly Pro: 4,000 credits.
- Creative Cloud Pro: 4,000 credits.
Adobe distinguishes standard and premium generative features. Credit use can vary by feature, model, resolution, and Adobe’s accounting rules. Some standard features may be unlimited on particular plans, while premium video or audio generations can still consume credits on higher tiers. Credits generally reset monthly; after exhausting them, users normally wait for the reset or purchase additional credits where Adobe offers that option. Read Adobe’s generative-credit documentation for the current rules.
For painting, AI is most useful as an assistant for rough ideation, extending a canvas, removing distractions, or generating elements to repaint and integrate. Treat outputs as starting material rather than finished artwork: check anatomy, edges, lighting, perspective, texture, and unwanted artifacts. Do not assume blanket commercial or legal clearance for every AI result; the answer depends on the tool, inputs, output, contract, and jurisdiction.

Strengths
- Professional depth: Photoshop handles detailed retouching, compositing, masking, color correction, typography, print preparation, and digital painting in one mature environment.
- PSD compatibility: PSD remains widely used and commonly expected in agency, publishing, advertising, studio, and freelance workflows. Alternatives can open PSD files, but layer effects, smart objects, adjustment layers, text, linked assets, plugins, and masks may not translate perfectly.
- Flexible non-destructive editing: Adjustment layers, masks, smart objects, and editable layers make it practical to revise a painting or composite after client feedback.
- Integrated AI: Generative tools are available inside the same layer-based workflow rather than in a separate application.
- Adobe integration: Photoshop connects with Lightroom, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, Adobe Fonts, Creative Cloud Libraries, and other Adobe services.
- Ongoing updates: The subscription provides current versions, feature updates, operating-system support, and new camera and AI capabilities without purchasing a separate perpetual release.
Weaknesses
- Subscription-only desktop access: You continue paying to retain access to the current application and service entitlements.
- Complex plan structure: Similar prices can provide desktop Photoshop, web/mobile Photoshop, Lightroom, or mainly generative services.
- Annual commitments: The headline Photoshop and Photography monthly prices are annual commitments billed monthly, not necessarily flexible month-to-month subscriptions.
- AI-credit limits: Generative use introduces quotas and changing distinctions between standard and premium features.
- Hardware demands: Large canvases, many layers, high-resolution displays, RAW files, filters, and generative tools can overwhelm budget hardware.
- Learning curve: Panels, masks, channels, shortcuts, color management, and non-destructive workflows take time to learn.
- Overkill for basic work: Cropping, resizing, simple social graphics, and occasional touch-ups do not require Photoshop’s full professional toolset.
Computer requirements
Current Photoshop desktop requirements identify version 27.x and later requirements. On Windows, Adobe lists supported Windows versions, at least 8GB of RAM, an AVX2-capable Intel, AMD, or WinARM processor, and a DirectX 12 GPU with at least 1.5GB of GPU memory. Adobe recommends 16GB or more of RAM and a stronger GPU, particularly with high-resolution displays.
Minimum specifications mean that the application may install and run; they do not promise a pleasant experience. Painters working on large layered files should allow extra memory and fast scratch-disk storage. A minimum-specification laptop may struggle with large PSDs, multiple documents, extensive history states, neural or generative filters, and 4K displays. Consult Adobe’s current technical requirements, including its exact macOS support table, before buying or upgrading a computer.

Photoshop alternatives in 2026
Affinity by Canva: best no-subscription professional alternative
Current 2026 coverage identifies Affinity by Canva as a leading Photoshop alternative and reports that its core offering is free. It combines photo editing, vector work, and layout tools, supports professional workflows, and can work with PSD files. Some AI capabilities may require Canva Premium.
Affinity is compelling for painters who want serious tools without a recurring Adobe subscription. It is less compelling for teams dependent on Adobe-specific plugins, actions, collaboration, smart objects, or exact PSD behavior. Test a representative client file before switching and preserve the original PSD.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
GIMP: best free and open-source desktop option
GIMP is free, open source, and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It provides broad selection, painting, cloning, color, and enhancement tools without a subscription or required account for the core application.
Its interface and workflows differ significantly from Photoshop, and it has less integrated generative AI. GIMP is a strong choice when the budget is zero or Linux support matters, but migration can be harder for users who rely on Adobe-specific files, plugins, actions, or training.
Photopea: best browser-based option
Photopea runs in a browser and supports layers, masks, blend modes, common formats, RAW files, and PSD files. It is convenient on shared computers, for quick edits, and for inspecting a file without installing software.
Performance depends on the browser, device, and connection, and it is not a complete substitute for Photoshop’s desktop ecosystem. Consider privacy, advertising, account, and cloud-storage implications before opening confidential client material.

- CONNECTION: includes USB-C cable to connect to Windows/Mac computers with DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 3 or 4 input (computers without DP Alt or TB 3 or 4 input require additional cables)
Pixelmator Pro: best streamlined Mac alternative
Pixelmator Pro is aimed at Mac users who want a polished native editor. It is worth considering if you do not need Windows or Linux support and do not depend on exact Adobe compatibility. Verify its current ownership, platform availability, price, and feature set before purchasing.
Photoshop Elements 2026: best beginner-oriented Adobe option
Photoshop Elements 2026 is a separate, beginner-focused product—not a cheaper version of the full Photoshop workflow. It emphasizes guided edits, home photo organization, and accessible tools, with new generative-AI and restoration features reported in current reviews. Reported concerns include RAW support and AI-credit limitations. It suits beginners and family-photo users better than professional painters handling complex composites, plugins, or demanding client files.
Is Photoshop worth paying for?
Yes, if your work depends on professional depth, PSD handoffs, Adobe compatibility, or frequent layered editing. For a digital painter, the subscription is easiest to justify when Photoshop is used weekly, when revisions must remain editable, or when clients and collaborators expect Adobe files.
Probably not, if you edit only occasionally. Compare the number of months you genuinely need each year with the annual commitment. Include the cost of learning another tool, converting files, replacing plugins, and checking PSD fidelity—not just the subscription price. Affinity by Canva may be the strongest no-subscription professional alternative; GIMP is the strongest zero-cost/open-source choice; Krita is particularly well positioned for digital painting; Photopea is useful for browser-based occasional work.
Buying and cancellation checklist
- Confirm that you are buying the exact US plan you want.
- Check whether “Photoshop” means desktop access or only web and mobile access.
- Write down the monthly payment, annual commitment, prepaid price, renewal price, and promotion expiry.
- Confirm storage and monthly generative-credit quantities.
- Choose Photography only if Lightroom is useful to you and the plan is available under current terms.
- Check your computer against Adobe’s minimum and recommended requirements.
- Before cancelling, review the exact plan name, renewal date, billing commitment, cancellation terms, storage usage, and downloaded files in your Adobe account.
- Back up local originals and cloud documents before changing or cancelling a plan.
Adobe lists a 7-day free trial for Photoshop, but verify the signup screen’s conversion and cancellation terms before starting it. Terms can vary by purchase channel and change over time.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Photoshop is still the safest professional choice for painters and designers who need advanced compositing, deep layer-based editing, PSD compatibility, and Adobe integration. Buy the Photography plan if you also need Lightroom; buy standalone Photoshop if you need the desktop app without the wider suite; choose Creative Cloud Pro only when you will use several Adobe applications. If avoiding subscriptions matters more than Adobe compatibility, start with Affinity by Canva, GIMP, Krita, or Photopea instead.
