Pinterest’s “tuner” can reduce AI content in your feed—but not remove it entirely

Pinterest’s AI tuner can reduce detected AI Pins in selected categories, but it is not a universal block. Here’s how to use it—and why some AI images will remain.

Yes, Pinterest now lets you see fewer AI Pins—but it does not offer a universal switch to remove AI-generated or AI-modified images altogether. The control works through category-based recommendation preferences, applies to eligible image Pins that Pinterest identifies as AI-related, and does not change the ads shown in your Home feed.

For painters, illustrators, designers, decorators, and anyone using Pinterest for visual reference, the distinction matters. Pinterest’s setting can reduce the amount of detected AI content recommended to you, especially in categories such as art and home decor. It cannot guarantee a human-made-only experience across Pinterest.

What Pinterest’s AI tuner does

Pinterest introduced its GenAI-content controls on October 16, 2025, following complaints that AI imagery was crowding out other visual inspiration. The company expanded the available categories to include food and drink on December 12, 2025.

The control is not a percentage slider, and it is not a platform-wide block. In Pinterest’s documentation, it appears under Refine your recommendations, with labels such as AI content or GenAI interests. You select categories in which you want to see fewer AI Pins.

Depending on the account and interface, categories may include:

  • Architecture
  • Art
  • Beauty
  • Entertainment
  • Men’s fashion
  • Women’s fashion
  • Children’s fashion
  • Health
  • Home decor
  • Sport
  • Food and drink

Pinterest says more categories may be added. Because the list and labels can change, use the categories actually displayed in your account rather than treating this historical list as a permanent menu. See Pinterest’s AI feature documentation and announcement for the company’s description of the rollout.

How to see fewer AI Pins on desktop

  1. Log in to Pinterest.
  2. Click the More options icon at the bottom left.
  3. Select Refine your recommendations.
  4. Open the AI content tab. If that wording is not shown, look for GenAI interests.
  5. Select the categories in which you want to see fewer AI Pins, then save or leave the page according to the interface shown.

Pinterest may revise the navigation or terminology, so the exact labels can differ from the current Help Center wording.

How to find the setting in the mobile app

For a personal account, Pinterest’s documented route is:

  1. Open the Pinterest app and tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
  2. Tap your profile photo at the top left.
  3. Choose Refine your recommendations.
  4. Open AI content or GenAI interests.
  5. Choose the categories for which you want fewer AI Pins.

For a business account, Pinterest gives a different route:

  1. Tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
  2. Tap the ellipsis at the top right.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Select Refine your recommendations.

Pinterest’s current Help Center says GenAI-interest customization is available on desktop and Android, with iOS listed as “coming soon.” Its 2025 launch announcement said an iOS rollout would follow in the subsequent weeks. That conflict means availability may depend on your app version, account, or region. If the option is missing, update Pinterest, check the desktop site, and look under both Refine your recommendations and Privacy and data—while remembering that those are separate settings.

See Pinterest’s current instructions for tuning your Home feed.

You may also be able to act from an individual Pin

When Pinterest identifies an eligible Pin as AI-related, tap or click its three-dot menu and look for See less AI Pins. Pinterest may then ask you to choose a relevant category.

This is a shortcut to the same general type of recommendation preference. It is not a command to delete every similar image, and it does not guarantee that AI content will disappear from search, profiles, boards, advertisements, or other places on Pinterest.

What “see fewer” means—and what it does not mean

Pinterest describes the feature as a way to adjust recommendations, not as an AI-content firewall. In practice, the setting is intended to reduce the prominence of detected AI Pins in the categories you select. Pinterest does not promise:

  • A zero-AI Home feed.
  • Removal of all AI Pins from search results.
  • Removal of AI content from profiles or boards.
  • Removal of AI content from advertisements.
  • Perfect identification of AI-generated or AI-modified images.
  • Human-made replacements at the same volume as the recommendations you reduce.

The scope is narrower than “turn off AI on Pinterest”: selected categories, eligible image Pins, and recommendations that Pinterest’s systems recognize as AI-related.

Why AI images can still appear

Pinterest says its AI labels and related detection systems can use information supplied by the content owner, image metadata, and automated visual classifiers. Labels may indicate that a Pin was modified with AI, contains an AI-generated person, or may have been modified with AI. Pinterest says its classifiers are still improving.

That creates several predictable limitations:

  • Some creators may not disclose AI use. An image can lack reliable owner-provided information or metadata.
  • Automated classifiers can miss content. A false negative means an AI image may not be identified or down-ranked.
  • Classifiers can be wrong. A human-made image may receive an incorrect label, particularly when it contains unusual retouching, compositing, or mixed media.
  • Mixed or lightly edited images are difficult to classify. A photograph, painting, collage, or product image may combine human and AI-made elements.
  • The preference is not universal across every Pinterest surface. Direct links, searches, followed accounts, boards, shared Pins, and other routes may expose you to content that recommendation settings do not prevent.
  • Availability is not identical for every user. Device, operating-system, account, regional, and rollout differences may affect both the setting and its category list.

The absence of an AI label is therefore not proof that an image was made without AI. Pinterest’s AI-label guidance also explains that creators can contact Pinterest support to appeal a label they believe is incorrect.

Changing the tuner does not change Home-feed ads

This is one of the most important limitations. Pinterest’s Home-feed recommendation documentation specifically says that changing recommendation settings does not affect the advertisements shown in the Home feed.

As a result, reducing AI recommendations may still leave you seeing AI-assisted advertising or product imagery. Pinterest separately describes generative-AI tools used in advertising, including Pinterest Canvas, which can create backgrounds for product images. The recommendation tuner is not an advertising filter. See Pinterest’s explanation of AI at Pinterest.

Do not confuse the feed setting with the Canvas training opt-out

Pinterest has a separate privacy control for whether your saved or uploaded content may be used to improve Pinterest Canvas. That setting does not filter AI Pins from your feed.

On desktop:

  1. Click More options.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Privacy and data.
  4. Uncheck Use your data to train Pinterest Canvas.
  5. Click Save.

On mobile:

  1. Tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap your profile photo at the top left.
  3. Open Privacy and data.
  4. Turn off Use your data to train Pinterest Canvas.

Pinterest says users under 18 are automatically opted out and cannot opt in. For the current wording and controls, consult Pinterest’s GenAI settings page.

Ways to improve a low-AI Pinterest experience

The official tuner is the most direct option, but it can be combined with ordinary feed-curation tools:

  • Use See less AI Pins whenever it appears on an eligible Pin.
  • Mark recommendations as not relevant when Pinterest offers that option.
  • Unfollow accounts or boards that repeatedly publish imagery you do not want to see.
  • Follow specific artists, studios, museums, publishers, and other trusted sources.
  • Browse followed accounts or saved boards instead of relying exclusively on Home recommendations.
  • Report content that violates Pinterest’s rules.

These actions can improve the mix of your recommendations, but they are not guaranteed AI detectors or platform-wide exclusion tools.

Is Pinterest’s solution good enough?

It is useful if your goal is fewer AI recommendations. Selecting art, home decor, fashion, or another supported category can reduce the volume of detected AI imagery while allowing you to keep using Pinterest for broader inspiration.

It is not sufficient if you require a strict no-AI environment. Detection is incomplete, the control is category-based, ads are unaffected, and Pinterest does not promise to filter every search result, board, profile, or directly accessed Pin.

For painters and other visual artists, the practical verdict is simple: try the tuner if AI-heavy recommendations are making Pinterest less useful, but treat it as a ranking adjustment rather than a guarantee of provenance. Pinterest gives users more control; it does not give them a complete way to remove AI content.
