You can make a digital sticker on a supported iPhone without installing an app: open a photo in Photos, touch and hold the person, pet, or object, then tap Add Sticker. The finished sticker appears in your iPhone sticker collection for use in Messages, the keyboard, Markup, and supported apps.
This creates a digital sticker—not a physical adhesive sticker. Printing requires a separate image-editing and printing workflow.
What kind of sticker can an iPhone make?
Apple’s built-in tools support several different sticker types:
- Static photo stickers: An ordinary photo becomes a sticker after iPhone lifts its main subject from the background.
- Animated Live Stickers: A Live Photo can retain motion when converted into a sticker.
- Memoji stickers: Apple-generated character stickers with different poses and expressions.
- Third-party sticker packs: Downloadable packs and iMessage apps from the App Store.
The built-in photo tool isolates the detected subject; it does not simply turn the entire rectangular photograph into a sticker. Apple’s current iOS 26 guide documents the process in detail: make stickers from photos on iPhone.

If you want stickers for labels, packaging, or crafts, that is a different job. You will need to prepare an image—often with a transparent background—then print it on sticker paper or use a cutting machine.
Before you start
- Use an iPhone running a software release that supports the current sticker workflow. Apple’s current instructions cover iOS 26; older versions may use different labels or layouts.
- Choose a sharp, well-lit image with one clearly recognizable subject.
- For animation, use an actual Live Photo, not a still image, screenshot, or regular video.
- The easiest workflow uses the Photos app and the standard iPhone keyboard.
Apple’s documentation confirms the software workflow but does not establish a complete model-by-model compatibility list. If the controls are missing, update iOS and check Apple’s current device requirements before assuming the feature works on every iPhone.
How to make a sticker from a photo
- Open Photos.
- Tap the photo you want to use.
- Make sure the image is displayed full-screen.
- Touch and hold the person, pet, or object you want to isolate.
- Wait for iPhone to detect and separate the subject from the background.
- Release your finger and tap Add Sticker.
- Optionally tap Add Effect and choose an effect such as Outline, Comic, or Puffy.
- Close the menu.
The sticker is now in your sticker collection. You can access it from the sticker area of the onscreen keyboard and from Markup tools.
You are not drawing the cut line manually. iPhone is automatically identifying the main subject, so a clean, high-contrast image usually produces a better result than a crowded or low-contrast one.
How to make an animated sticker from a Live Photo
- Open a Live Photo in Photos.
- Touch and hold the moving subject.
- Release your finger when the subject separates from the background.
- Tap Add Sticker.
- Tap Add Effect if you want to apply an effect.
A still photo creates a static sticker. A Live Photo can create an animated one, although the movement may be subtle if the original Live Photo contains little motion. Effects and the destination app can also affect how the animation appears. Apple confirms the Live Sticker creation process, but does not guarantee identical animated-sticker behavior in every third-party app.
How to create a sticker directly in Messages
If Add Sticker does not appear in Photos, or you want to create one while chatting, use Messages:

- Open Messages and open a conversation.
- Tap the Add (+) button.
- Tap Stickers.
- Tap the Live Stickers icon.
- Tap Add (+).
- Choose a photo. Choose a Live Photo if you want possible animation.
- Tap Add (+) again.
- Optionally tap Add Effect.
- Tap Done.

How to send a sticker in Messages
To send a sticker as its own message:
- Open a Messages conversation.
- Tap Add (+), then Stickers.
- Choose a category, such as Live Stickers, Emoji, Memoji, or a creator’s sticker pack.
- Tap the sticker.
- Add text if you want, then tap Send.
You can also open the emoji keyboard by tapping the emoji button or the globe/keyboard-switch button, swipe to the sticker area, and tap a sticker to insert it into the message field. Apple documents this keyboard workflow here.
Place a sticker on a message bubble
- Tap Add (+), then Stickers.
- Select a sticker pack.
- Drag a sticker onto an existing message bubble.
- Use a second finger to resize or rotate it, then release.
To move or resize a placed sticker later, touch and hold it. To remove one, touch and hold the message bubble, tap Sticker Details, swipe left on the sticker, and tap the delete button.
Apple lists iOS 17.2, iPadOS 17.2, macOS 14.1, watchOS 10.2, or visionOS 1 and later for the updated message-bubble sticker behavior. Older recipients may not see the placement features in the same way.

Markup can place a sticker over a photo, note, or other supported document:
- Open the photo or document in a supported app, such as Photos or Notes.
- Tap Markup.
- Tap the Add (+) button in the Markup toolbar.
- Tap Add Sticker.
- Touch a sticker and drag it onto the image or document.
- Resize it with the handles and rotate it with a second finger.
- Tap Done, or use the app’s save control.
Adding a sticker with Markup generally places it as an element on the photo or document. It does not necessarily export a new, standalone transparent image. Apple’s Markup guide covers the available tools.

How to use Memoji stickers
Memoji is separate from photo cutouts. It is the better choice when you want a cartoon character rather than a sticker based on your own image.
- Open Messages.
- Tap Add (+), swipe up, and tap Memoji.
- Tap New Memoji.
- Customize the character and tap Done.
- Open the sticker tray and choose a Memoji pose or expression.
Memoji automatically becomes a sticker pack available from the keyboard and usable in Messages, Mail, and some third-party apps. See Apple’s Memoji instructions.

Find created stickers in the sticker area of the iPhone keyboard, in Messages under Add (+) > Stickers, or in Markup under Add (+) > Add Sticker.
To remove a sticker from the collection:
- Open Photos and open any photo.
- Tap Edit, then Markup.
- Tap Add (+), then Add Sticker.
- Touch and hold the unwanted sticker.
- Tap Remove.
This is different from deleting a sticker already attached to a Messages bubble; use Sticker Details on the relevant message bubble for that.
Choose a better source image
For the cleanest automatic cutout, choose a photo with:
- One dominant subject with its entire outline inside the frame.
- Good lighting and strong contrast with the background.
- Sharp details rather than heavy blur or compression.
- Visible edges instead of smoke, reflections, glass, shadows, or fine strands blending into the background.
Group photos, overlapping objects, screenshots with several elements, and subjects against similarly colored backgrounds are more likely to produce an unwanted selection. If iPhone chooses the wrong object, crop the photo first so the intended subject is visually dominant, then try again.

Why can’t I make a sticker?
“Add Sticker” does not appear
- Confirm the photo is open full-screen in Photos.
- Touch and hold directly on the intended subject—not on empty background.
- Try a photo with one obvious, high-contrast subject.
- Use the alternate route: Messages > Add (+) > Stickers > Live Stickers > Add (+).
- Update the iPhone to a supported iOS release.
- Restart the iPhone if subject recognition or the sticker drawer appears stuck.
- Check for parental-control or organization-managed restrictions.
If the option remains absent, consult Apple Support rather than assuming a particular undocumented cause or iPhone-model limitation.
The wrong object is selected
Multiple touching subjects, complex backgrounds, weak contrast, transparent materials, and very fine details can confuse automatic subject detection. Crop closer, improve the source image, or use an editor with manual masking if exact contours matter.
The sticker looks jagged or incomplete
Start with the original high-resolution photo rather than a screenshot or heavily compressed copy. Crop closer to the subject, and try an outline effect if a rough edge is distracting. Apple’s documented workflow is automatic; it does not provide a manual cutout brush in these instructions.
The Live Sticker does not move
Check that the source was an actual Live Photo and contained noticeable movement. The receiving app or recipient’s operating system may display it as static, and an effect or export path may change how animation is handled. Apple does not promise identical behavior across all third-party apps.
Stickers are missing on another Apple device
Apple says created stickers sync through iCloud to supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro devices signed in with the same Apple Account. Confirm the same account is being used, verify that iCloud is available, allow time for synchronization, and reopen the keyboard or app. Sync is not necessarily instant.
Do iPhone stickers work in WhatsApp and other apps?
System stickers are available in compatible apps, but third-party behavior varies. An app may support static stickers but not Live Sticker animation, or may provide its own sticker-pack format and import process. Do not assume that a sticker placed on a Messages bubble or created as a Live Sticker will behave identically in WhatsApp, social apps, email, or other services.

Do you need a sticker-making app?

| Export transparent files for design or printing | Use an editor with suitable export controls. |
| Create stickers for a specific platform | Follow that platform’s supported sticker workflow. |
For example, Sticker Maker Studio is designed for organized packs and platform-oriented sticker creation. Its current price and in-app purchases should be checked on the App Store listing. For one personal photo cutout, however, Apple’s built-in method is simpler and avoids installing another app.
To download premade sticker packs or iMessage apps, use the App Store options available through Messages; Apple explains that process in its iMessage apps guide.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make a sticker from a video?
The documented built-in workflow uses a still photo or Live Photo. A regular video is not the same as a Live Photo; capture or save a suitable frame as a photo, or use a third-party app if you need a video-based animated pack.
Can I make a sticker from a screenshot?
Yes, if the screenshot contains a clearly recognizable subject, but screenshots are often lower quality or contain unwanted interface elements. Crop it first for a cleaner result.
Can I print an iPhone sticker?
Not directly as a finished physical sticker from the built-in sticker drawer. Export or recreate the artwork in an image editor, prepare the background and dimensions, then print it on suitable sticker material.
Where are my stickers stored?
They appear in the system sticker collection, accessible through the keyboard, Messages, and Markup. Apple says they can sync through iCloud across supported Apple devices using the same Apple Account.
