For most Apple users, Photomator is the best all-around image upscaler because it works across iPhone, iPad, and Mac and fits naturally into Photos, Files, and iCloud workflows. For serious Mac enlargement, large prints, and maximum model control, choose Topaz Gigapixel. Lightroom is the most convenient choice for existing Adobe users, while Remini is best suited to quick mobile portrait enhancement.
The right choice depends on what you are enlarging: a painting reference, scanned artwork, portrait, logo, screenshot, or photograph. AI upscaling can create convincing detail, but it cannot retrieve information that was never captured—and it may invent details that were not in the original.
What an image upscaler actually does
A normal resize increases an image’s pixel dimensions. An AI upscaler does more: it analyzes edges, textures, faces, patterns, and noise, then reconstructs pixels that it considers plausible.

- ✔ CLARUS 15x MACRO LENS - MARVEL YOUR SENSES. MAGNIFY NEARBY SUBJECTS FOR BREATHTAKING, SUPER CLOSE-UP PHOTOS: Capture all the intricacies and details with precision-focus for razor crisp macro photos every time. - ✔ GLOWCLIP RECHARGEABLE LED FILL LIGHT - The GlowClip LED light clips ANYWHERE on your phone to instantly illuminate your subject and surroundings with warm continuous light. - ✔ QUICK-RELEASE LANYARD AND TRAVEL CASE - TRANSPORT AND PROTECT YOUR LENS KIT: Perfect for taking your Xenvo lenses with you on the fly. The travel case stores and protects all lens kit components snugly and safely while the quick-release lanyard is the perfect way to carry your lenses on your next outing. Just drape the lanyard and lens around your neck. The quick-release lanyard head makes it a cinch to access your Xenvo lenses in a flash so you never miss another photo moment.
That reconstruction is an estimate, not recovered evidence. A face may receive artificial eyelashes or teeth; foliage may become repetitive texture; small lettering may change; and an old painting scan may gain brush-like details that were never present.
Upscaling is also different from:
- Sharpening: increases edge contrast without necessarily adding meaningful resolution.
- Denoising: reduces grain, JPEG artifacts, or sensor noise, sometimes at the cost of real texture.
- Face restoration: reconstructs facial features and can change a person’s appearance.
- General editing: combines resizing with color, exposure, cropping, layers, and catalog tools.
For painting and art-reference work, this distinction matters. An enlarged image can be useful for viewing composition, color relationships, or broad forms, but it should not be treated as an authoritative record of uncertain brushwork, lettering, or facial details.

Best overall across iPhone, iPad, and Mac: Photomator
Photomator is the most practical recommendation for Apple users who want one photo editor across devices. Its cited App Store listing identifies iPhone, iPad, and Mac compatibility, AI-powered resolution enhancement, batch editing, Photos and Files integration, Apple ProRAW, and support for more than 750 RAW formats.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIt is particularly useful for a painter who keeps reference photographs, artwork scans, and exported images in Apple Photos or iCloud Drive. It offers a broader editing workflow than a one-purpose enhancer: you can organize images, correct exposure and color, crop, edit RAW files, and then create an enlarged derivative.
Photomator is not necessarily the right tool when you need many specialized AI models, highly specific print controls, or a dedicated restoration pipeline. It is best understood as a strong Apple-native photo editor with Super Resolution rather than a specialist enlargement laboratory.

A sensible Photomator workflow
- Open the image in Photomator.
- Locate the current resolution or Super Resolution control. The exact label and location may change between versions and device interfaces.
- Apply the enlargement and inspect the result at 100% zoom.
- Check faces, hair, foliage, lettering, painted edges, and high-contrast contours.
- Export a new file instead of overwriting the original.
- Compare JPEG, HEIF, TIFF, or PNG according to the intended use.
Photomator emphasizes Apple technologies including Metal, Core ML, and Core Image, but the exact processing path can vary by operation and version. Privacy-sensitive users should confirm the current app documentation for the specific Super Resolution feature rather than assuming every operation is local.
Best for Mac and iPad editing with layers: Pixelmator Pro
Pixelmator Pro is a better fit than Photomator when enlargement is only one part of a design or painting workflow. It combines Super Resolution with layers, compositing, retouching, typography, and broader design tools.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn Mac, Apple documents this path:
- Open the image in Pixelmator Pro.
- Choose Image > Super Resolution.
- Pixelmator Pro automatically increases the document’s resolution.
- Use the intelligent resize workflow if you need a particular final pixel size.
The iPad version includes the Mac app’s AI features and touch-optimized editing. Apple lists an iPad with an M1 chip or later, iPad A16, or iPad mini A17 Pro among the compatible hardware requirements cited for the current product page.
Pixelmator Pro is not the best answer for an iPhone-only user, and it is not a dedicated upscaler in the way Gigapixel is. Choose it when you want to enlarge an image and continue designing, masking, painting over, or compositing it.
Best dedicated Mac upscaler: Topaz Gigapixel
Topaz Gigapixel is the strongest candidate when upscaling itself is the main job. Its listed models include Wonder, Standard, High Fidelity, Low Res, Text & Shapes, Art & CG, Recover, Redefine, and Face Recovery. That variety is valuable because a portrait, a scanned painting, a logo, and a low-resolution screenshot need different treatment.
Gigapixel is a logical choice for:
- Large-format artwork or photo prints.
- Low-resolution images that need more than a modest enlargement.
- Repeatable batch processing.
- Text, line art, and illustrations when a graphics-oriented model is appropriate.
- Users who want to compare models instead of relying on one automatic result.
Topaz distinguishes local rendering from cloud rendering. Local processing is preferable for confidential artwork, client images, legal or medical photographs, and work covered by a nondisclosure agreement. Cloud processing can be more convenient on less powerful hardware, but it requires uploading the image and may involve plan limits.

The pricing page displayed Gigapixel at $29 per month on the monthly view observed on August 16, 2026. Topaz also displayed other plan views and bundles, so treat that figure as date- and region-specific and verify the live page before purchase.
Gigapixel may be excessive if you only need to enlarge an image for social media. It also requires a Mac installation and suitable hardware; processing time and output limits depend on the source file, model, and computer. There is no native iPhone or iPad Gigapixel app established by the cited product information.
Best for existing Adobe users: Lightroom
Lightroom makes the most sense if your photographs and artwork scans already live in an Adobe catalog. It combines ordinary editing and Super Resolution with Generative Upscale and AI Sharpen options, including Topaz-powered choices described in Adobe’s documentation.
The current Lightroom workflow is:
- Open the image.
- Choose the relevant Enhance or Generative Upscale control.
- Select Upscale.
- Lightroom places the generated image in the stack or beside the original in the Filmstrip.
- If the requested scale exceeds a model’s limit, reduce the scale or resize the source first.
Adobe states that Generative Upscale consumes credits according to output size. Its cited documentation lists 10 credits for Topaz Gigapixel or Topaz AI Sharpen on files up to 25 megapixels, and 20 credits for files from 25 to 56 megapixels. Menu labels, model availability, limits, and credit figures can change, so check Adobe’s live documentation for your Lightroom build.
Lightroom is convenient for cataloged photographers, but a poor value if you need only occasional enlargements and do not already use Adobe. It also adds a credit system to some operations, which makes frequent use harder to compare with a one-time desktop license.
Best mobile portrait enhancer: Remini
Remini is designed around one-tap face enhancement, old-photo repair, blurry-photo improvement, and portrait restoration. It is available for iPhone and iPad in the cited US App Store listing and is a convenient choice for a quick family-photo result.

Its limitation is also its defining feature: it is optimized to make faces look more defined and pleasing, not to preserve every original fact. It may smooth skin, reshape features, alter eyes or teeth, or fabricate plausible details. Use it for appearance enhancement, not identity verification, historical evidence, legal documentation, or accurate reconstruction.
The listing describes a free download with advertising and in-app purchases, including weekly, monthly, and yearly subscriptions. It showed Remini Pro Weekly at $9.99 in the cited US listing, but App Store prices vary by country, account, and offer.
Privacy-sensitive users should read the current App Store privacy label and developer policy. The cited listing says the developer may handle user content such as photos or videos and includes advertising and tracking disclosures. Remini is therefore a less obvious choice for private client work, unpublished art, identity documents, or family images you do not want uploaded.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Best free Mac option: Upscayl
Upscayl is worth investigating if you want a free, open-source, local desktop option without a subscription. Topaz’s comparison coverage identifies it in that category.
Its advantages are straightforward: no recurring plan, a Mac-based workflow, and the possibility of keeping images on the computer. Its results, available models, speed, and hardware requirements should still be tested against your own images. Free software should not be assumed to match a commercial tool on faces, text, large prints, batch work, or difficult scans.
Upscayl is not a mobile solution, and it may be less polished for users who want Apple Photos integration, one-tap portrait restoration, or commercial support.

Best print-focused alternative: ON1 Resize AI
ON1 Resize AI is aimed at desktop and print workflows. The purchase page confirms a one-time-purchase option, inclusion of Resize AI 2026 in Photo RAW 2026.5, and plugin use with Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, and other editors through Photo RAW MAX 2026.5.
It is a sensible alternative for photographers and artists who regularly prepare large prints and prefer a perpetual-license route. It is much less attractive for someone who edits exclusively on an iPhone or iPad, and its purchase terms, upgrade policy, and plugin availability should be checked on the live page.
Choose by image type
- Everyday iPhone photograph: Start with Photomator. Lightroom is preferable if your library is already in Adobe.
- Portrait or face: Remini is fastest on mobile; Topaz or Lightroom offers more control. Inspect the person’s identity carefully.
- Old or damaged family photograph: Compare Remini, Photomator, and a desktop tool such as Topaz. Scratches, missing eyes, and severe blur cannot be reliably recovered.
- Painting scan or artwork reference: Photomator is convenient for Apple Photos libraries; Topaz or ON1 is better for serious desktop and print preparation.
- Text, signage, logo, or illustration: Use a model intended for text, shapes, art, or graphics. Topaz lists Text & Shapes and Art & CG models. Always compare lettering with the original.
- Large print: Prefer Topaz Gigapixel or ON1 Resize AI, then evaluate the result at the intended physical viewing size.
- Private or confidential image: Prefer a verified local-processing mode. Do not assume an app is private merely because it has a Mac version.
- Occasional free Mac use: Try Upscayl and compare it with a commercial tool using the same source image.
How to upscale without making the image worse
- Keep the original untouched. Export an enlarged derivative with a clear filename.
- Crop and correct exposure first. Upscaling should not be used to compensate for a poor composition or incorrect tonal balance.
- Reduce severe noise carefully. JPEG blocking, ringing, and mosquito noise can become more visible after enlargement. Too much denoising can erase genuine texture.
- Start at 2×. A 4× linear enlargement creates approximately 16 times as many pixels, but not 16 times as much information.
- Compare 2× and 4×. More pixels are not automatically more believable detail.
- Inspect critical regions at 100%. Check faces, text, thin lines, hair, foliage, repeated patterns, painted edges, halos, skin texture, and color noise.
- Export for the actual destination. Use a suitable format: JPEG or HEIF for many screen uses, PNG for graphics and transparency when preserved correctly, and TIFF when your print workflow requires it.
- Check final display or print size. A result that looks strange at 400% may look acceptable at normal viewing distance, while a changed face or incorrect lettering may remain obvious in a print.
For screenshots, logos, and transparent PNGs, test alpha transparency, flat colors, thin strokes, and geometric edges. A photographic face model may damage these elements.
Local versus cloud processing
Local processing keeps the image on the device or computer, avoids upload time and cloud credits, and is generally the safer starting point for private work. It may require a newer Mac, more memory, and longer processing times.
Cloud processing can provide larger models and work well on lower-powered iPhones and iPads, with no substantial desktop installation. The trade-off is uploading the image, depending on an internet connection, and accepting the service’s retention, deletion, training, account, and plan policies.
Ask these questions before uploading:
- Is upload required for this exact feature?
- How long are originals and generated files retained?
- Can you delete them?
- May the provider use images to improve its models?
- Is an account or subscription required?
- Are there output-size or concurrency limits?
Does increasing DPI add detail?
No. DPI is a print-planning measurement. Changing metadata from 72 DPI to 300 DPI does not create pixels or recover detail. To make a larger print genuinely more usable, you need more pixels—created by a camera, scanner, ordinary resize, or AI reconstruction—and you still need to judge whether the reconstruction is believable.
Final recommendations
Choose Photomator if you want the most balanced app across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Choose Topaz Gigapixel if enlargement quality, model selection, batch work, or large-format printing matters more than mobile convenience. Choose Lightroom if you already use Adobe’s catalog and editing ecosystem. Choose Remini for fast mobile portraits, but treat its facial results as plausible reconstruction rather than recovered truth. For a subscription-free Mac workflow, investigate Upscayl; for recurring print work and a one-time-purchase preference, consider ON1 Resize AI.
