No—Inkscape is not a virus. It is legitimate, free, open-source vector-graphics software for Windows, macOS, and Linux. However, an individual Inkscape installer can still trigger an antivirus warning because of heuristic scanning, package-specific behavior, limited reputation data, or an unofficial or altered download.
Do not automatically click Allow or create an antivirus exclusion. Verify the exact file, its source, its signature, its hash, and the specific detection before running it.
What is Inkscape?
Inkscape is a vector-graphics editor used to create SVG artwork, logos, illustrations, diagrams, typography, and other scalable designs. The project is free and open source, distributed under the GPL, and supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. See the official installation guidance for supported platforms and download options.

“Open source” means the program’s source code is publicly available and developed through a community process. It does not mean every copy found online is trustworthy. A third-party download can be modified, repackaged, or replaced, so the source of the installer still matters.

Why might antivirus software flag Inkscape?
Security products do not rely only on confirmed malware signatures. They may also flag files based on behavior, structure, reputation, or similarity to known threats. Possible explanations include:
- Heuristic detection: An installer or bundled component may resemble behavior commonly used by malware without being confirmed malware.
- Limited reputation: A newly released file may not yet have enough download history for every vendor to trust it automatically.
- Different package formats: An
.exe,.msi,.7z, DMG, AppImage, or Linux distribution package is a separate artifact and may be scanned differently. - Complex components: Desktop applications contain launchers, libraries, interpreters, extensions, and installation logic that can produce vendor-specific detections.
- Unofficial packaging: Download portals, mirrors, torrents, and “free download” pages may add software or distribute an altered copy.
- Vendor-specific mistakes: One antivirus engine may report a detection while others do not.
A documented Inkscape detection does not prove either conclusion
Inkscape’s issue tracker records a report in which Trend Micro and Trend Micro HouseCall flagged the Windows 1.4.2 .msi and .7z packages, while the corresponding .exe was reported as clean. The report is useful evidence that package formats can produce different results: read the reported incident.

It does not prove that every warning is a false positive, and it does not establish that every copy of those files is safe. Treat a warning as a question about the specific file—not as proof that all Inkscape software is malicious or that every alert can be ignored.

VirusTotal aggregates reports from participating security vendors. A result such as “one engine detected malware” means that a participating engine reported a detection; it is not, by itself, a definitive malware verdict. VirusTotal explains its scanning process and reports in its methodology documentation, file-type guidance, and most-recent-report guidance.

When reviewing a result, check:
- Which vendors reported the file.
- Whether the label is generic—such as “heuristic,” “suspicious,” or “riskware”—or names a specific malware family.
- How many reputable vendors agree.
- When the scan was performed and whether the file’s hash is the one from the official release.
There is no universal safe detection-count threshold. One generic detection may be a false positive, while a consistent detection by several reputable vendors requires serious investigation. Conversely, a clean VirusTotal result is not a guarantee: scanners can miss threats.
How to verify an Inkscape download
- Start at the official domain. Use inkscape.org and its official release page. Avoid sponsored search results, unofficial mirrors, download managers, cracks, torrents, and repackaged copies.
- Confirm the release and platform. Check the version, operating system, processor architecture, and filename against the official listing. Scan the exact package you downloaded; a clean
.exedoes not certify a different.msi, archive, DMG, or AppImage. - Choose a stable release. Development builds are intended for testing and may crash, cause usability problems, or result in data loss. The project’s installation documentation distinguishes stable releases from development versions.
- Check the Windows signature. Open the installer’s properties and inspect its digital-signature information. An absent, invalid, or unexpected publisher signature is a reason to stop. It is not automatically proof of malware, but it needs explanation.
- Compare the SHA-256 hash. On Windows PowerShell, run:
Get-FileHash .Inkscape-Installer.exe -Algorithm SHA256On macOS or Linux, run:
shasum -a 256 Inkscape-Installer.dmgCompare the result with an authoritative hash published by the project for the exact same file. Calculating a hash without an official comparison value only identifies your file; it does not prove its authenticity.

- Update antivirus definitions and rescan. A vendor’s classification may change as its research and signatures are updated.
- Submit a suspected false positive. If the source, signature, and hash all check out but one vendor still reports a generic detection, submit the exact file to that vendor for analysis rather than disabling protection.
When should you delete the installer?
Do not run the file when:
- It came from an unofficial mirror, torrent, crack site, or unknown download portal.
- The signature is missing, invalid, or issued to an unexpected publisher.
- The hash does not match the official release value.
- Several reputable vendors identify the same specific malware family.
- The filename, installer interface, or bundled software is unexpected.
- You accidentally downloaded a development build that you did not intend to use.
- The file attempts persistence, credential access, unexpected network activity, security-tool tampering, or other suspicious behavior.
If the source is uncertain, delete the file and download a fresh copy from the official site. A legitimate-looking website is not an absolute guarantee: a site, CDN, or download path could theoretically be compromised. Signatures and hashes provide additional checks.

Not a virus does not mean risk-free
“Inkscape is legitimate” and “this particular version has no security vulnerabilities” are different claims. Older versions can contain flaws, and a legitimate graphics application can be exposed to malicious documents.

Older macOS versions
NIST records CVE-2025-15523, a macOS-specific issue affecting Inkscape versions before 1.4.3. Under certain conditions, a bundled Python interpreter could inherit application permissions and allow a local attacker to access files in privacy-protected folders. NIST lists the issue as fixed in 1.4.3.
Maliciously crafted SVG files
CVE-2026-4980 concerns Inkscape 1.1 through versions before 1.3 when processing specially crafted SVG files involving XInclude processing. This is a vulnerability in how affected versions process a malicious document—not evidence that ordinary Inkscape installers are viruses.
These examples are why you should use a current stable release, install updates, and be cautious with SVG files received from unknown sources.
Common mistakes to avoid
- “Open source means antivirus cannot flag it.” Antivirus tools scan compiled programs and installers regardless of their licensing model. Public source code can improve transparency, but it does not eliminate vulnerabilities or supply-chain risks.
- “The warning proves Inkscape is malicious.” A heuristic or generic detection is not the same as a confirmed malware-family identification.
- “The official website guarantees the file.” Source verification is important, but signatures and hashes provide stronger evidence about the exact artifact.
- “A clean scan means it is risk-free.” Scanners can miss malware, and legitimate applications can have exploitable flaws.
- “Clicking Allow proves nothing is wrong.” Allowing a file or adding an exclusion only bypasses protection; it does not verify authenticity or safety.
Verdict
Inkscape itself is not a virus. It is legitimate open-source graphics software. But an antivirus warning about a particular installer should not be dismissed automatically. The safest approach is to use a current stable release from inkscape.org, verify the exact package’s signature and hash where available, rescan with updated definitions, and investigate any specific malware detection before running it.
