To edit an image in Gemini, open the image library or upload a picture, select it, and describe the change you want; you can refine the result in further turns. Gemini Apps documents downloads at 1K without a Google AI plan and 2K with one—not 4K. For explicit 4K output-size control, use the Gemini API, where the selected aspect ratio determines the output dimensions.
What is Google Nano Banana?
“Nano Banana” is Google’s name for Gemini image-generation and image-editing models. Google’s current API guide describes Nano Banana 2.1 as its primary high-efficiency image-generation and conversational-editing model, Nano Banana Pro as a premium option for complex visual work, Nano Banana 2 as a previous-generation workhorse, Nano Banana 2 Lite as a speed-and-cost option with narrower capability, and the original Nano Banana / Gemini 2.5 Flash Image as a legacy model.
Its defining feature is conversational editing. Select or upload an image, request a change, inspect the result, and ask for a correction in the same conversation. You can request a local edit, combine reference images, or create an image from a prompt. Describe what should change and what should stay consistent, but do not assume every detail will be preserved perfectly.

Google’s release notes announced Nano Banana 2.1 general availability on October 6, 2026, and say gemini-3.1-flash-image is scheduled to shut down October 29, 2026. Recheck the image-generation documentation and Google release notes before relying on model names or lifecycle dates.
Where to use Nano Banana
Gemini Apps
Gemini Apps are the simplest route for conversational edits. Choose an image from the image library or upload one, select it, and enter an edit prompt. You can make further requests to refine the result. Google says users can choose among available Nano Banana models by changing the Gemini model before making an image request.

Availability depends on supported countries and languages. Google’s current help page says image editing is unavailable to users under 18. Check Google’s Gemini Apps help page for current eligibility and instructions.
Gemini API
The Gemini API is a separate, developer-oriented workflow for applications and programmatic image generation. It lets you specify image size and aspect ratio; the default image size is 1K. Consult Google’s live guide for current setup and SDK syntax rather than treating the API as a hidden Gemini Apps setting.
How to edit an image in Gemini Apps
- Open Gemini and sign in.
- Open the image library or use the upload control to add an image.
- Select the image you want to edit.
- Describe the specific change you want.
- State what should remain consistent, such as the person’s appearance or the image’s composition.
- Review the result and request a targeted refinement in a further turn if needed.
- Download the result and check its dimensions if they matter for your project.
For image generation rather than editing, describe what to create and the desired style. For either task, a clear request is more useful than a vague instruction such as “make it better.”

A reliable editing prompt
Try a prompt that clearly separates the requested change from the details to preserve:
Change: Replace the gray wall with a warm cream studio background and remove the power cable on the floor.
Keep consistent: The person’s appearance, pose, hands, camera angle, lighting direction, and image framing. Do not add text, logos, extra people, or new objects.
Make a focused request, review the output, and ask for a specific correction if needed. Save the original if you may want to restart; generative edits are not guaranteed to preserve every detail.
Can Gemini Apps export images in 4K?
Google’s current Gemini Apps help page documents downloads at 1K without a Google AI plan and 2K with a Google AI plan. It does not document 4K downloads in Gemini Apps. Do not treat a prompt asking for “4K” as an export-size control.

If your Gemini image download is only 1K or 2K, that matches the sizes Google documents for the app. A paid plan’s documented 2K tier is not the same as 4K API output.

How to get 4K output from Nano Banana
Google documents 1K, 2K, and 4K image-size options through the Gemini API. Set the API’s image-size parameter to 4K and choose the intended aspect ratio. This is an API workflow that requires developer setup, not a consumer-app download setting; see Google’s live API guide for the current configuration syntax.
“4K” is Google’s output-size tier, not one fixed pixel geometry. For example, Google’s API dimension table lists 5504 × 3072 for 16:9 output at the 4K tier. Other aspect ratios have different dimensions. If a delivery specification requires exactly 3840 × 2160, inspect the downloaded file’s pixel dimensions and resize or crop it to that geometry if needed.
Keep the app and API claims distinct: the cited Gemini Apps help documents 1K and 2K downloads, while the API guide documents configurable 1K, 2K, and 4K output sizes. Do not assume an app edit exports at the API’s 4K dimensions.

Object removal
Remove the coffee cup from the table and reconstruct the table surface naturally. Keep the wood grain, shadows, perspective, lighting, and other objects consistent. Do not crop or change the camera angle.
Background replacement
Replace the background with a softly lit neutral-gray studio backdrop. Keep the subject’s appearance, clothing, shadows, perspective, and framing consistent. Match the original light direction.
Product mockup
Place the uploaded product on a matte white pedestal in a studio setting. Keep its proportions, label layout, logo, colors, and text consistent. Inspect the result carefully for changes to the product or its markings.

Restyling
Specify the style and the details to keep consistent: “Restyle this image as a watercolor painting while keeping the subject’s pose, composition, major shapes, and lighting direction consistent. Do not add people or change the crop.” Review the result to see whether the details you care about were preserved.
Text-heavy graphics
For a graphic, give the model the exact text and layout you want, then proofread every word, number, and label manually. Do not rely on generated text for important factual or typographic accuracy.
Multiple references
Identify each reference image by role, such as: “Use the first image for the person, the second for the jacket, and the third for the room. Keep the person’s appearance consistent.” Inspect the result for identity, product, and material accuracy.

- Inexact preservation: A request to keep an appearance or detail consistent is guidance, not a guarantee.
- Product changes: Check labels, logos, packaging, and small details in generated results.
- Text errors: Inspect spelling, numbers, spacing, and small type in graphics.
- Over-editing: Broad instructions can change more of an image than intended; request a focused edit.
- Resolution mismatch: App downloads and API output have different documented size controls. Check the saved file against your delivery specification.
Google says images generated by Nano Banana models include a SynthID watermark. Google’s Gemini app launch article also says app-created or edited images include visible watermarking as well as invisible SynthID. See Google’s Gemini image-editing announcement.
Do not use generative editing where documentary or forensic fidelity is essential. For exact typography, layer-based design, color management, masks, or legally sensitive retouching, a traditional editor may be more suitable.

Pricing: subscription or API?
A Google AI plan is relevant if you want the documented 2K download tier in Gemini Apps; it does not, according to the cited help page, unlock 4K app downloads. API image-size settings are a separate developer workflow. Check Google’s current API pricing documentation and plan details before choosing, because costs, access, and limits can change.
Choose Gemini Apps for conversational editing without building an application. Choose the API if you need programmatic control over image size and aspect ratio. Model names and lifecycle status change, so verify Google’s current guide before beginning a longer-term workflow.
