Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, informally known as Nano Banana, became generally available on October 2, 2025, after launching in preview on August 26. It is a fast, conversational image-generation and editing model that can combine reference images, transform paintings or photographs with natural-language instructions, and attempt to preserve a subject’s appearance across multiple edits.
“Goes Pro” is a useful description of its move into production use, but it is not the model’s official name. Google’s newer Nano Banana Pro is a separate Gemini 3 model. As of August 2026, Google describes Gemini 2.5 Flash Image as the legacy Nano Banana model and recommends newer models for most new image-generation projects.
What Google actually launched
The official model name is gemini-2.5-flash-image. “Nano Banana” is the informal name associated with it, not a separate official product. Google introduced the model as a preview on August 26, 2025, through the Gemini API, Google AI Studio, and Vertex AI. It reached general availability on October 2, 2025.

Google positioned it as a native image model rather than a text-only chatbot that happens to produce pictures. It accepts text and images, then generates image and text responses. That makes it useful for a painter, illustrator, or designer who wants to revise an existing visual through a conversation instead of starting over with a completely new prompt.

Its production-ready announcement is documented by Google’s developer blog, while the original preview announcement explains the model’s initial capabilities.
Why artists and painters paid attention
The model’s appeal is its combination of image understanding and conversational editing. According to Google, Gemini 2.5 Flash Image can:
- Blend multiple reference images into one composition.
- Transform a person, character, product, or scene while attempting to retain recognizable traits.
- Change clothing, pose, setting, lighting, or visual style.
- Remove people or objects.
- Repair small details such as stains.
- Colorize black-and-white images.
- Use Gemini’s contextual understanding to interpret an instruction alongside the supplied image.
For a painter, that could mean uploading a reference photograph and asking for a Renaissance-style composition, trying several background treatments for a landscape, visualizing a change in palette, or combining a figure reference with a separate costume and environment reference.
Google’s demonstrations included fashion and product-visualization examples such as “Fit Check,” as well as other creative applications. Those are Google’s demonstrations and capability claims, not independent evidence that every edit will preserve a face, product, brushstroke, or composition perfectly.
What “conversational editing” means in practice
A typical workflow begins with an image and a specific instruction:
- Upload a painting, photograph, sketch, or other permitted reference image.
- Describe one intended change, such as “replace the cloudy sky with a warm sunset while keeping the mountain silhouette unchanged.”
- Review the result for changes outside the requested area.
- Continue with another narrowly defined instruction if needed.
- Keep the original file and earlier versions so you can roll back when an edit drifts.
This is not the same as working in Photoshop, Lightroom, or a traditional digital painting application. Gemini 2.5 Flash Image does not provide layers, paths, masks, brush controls, color-management tools, or guaranteed pixel-level edits. It generates a new image in response to the request. Even a seemingly local instruction can alter nearby shadows, reflections, edges, facial features, typography, or the overall lighting.

For better results, make one change at a time and state what must remain unchanged. If several rounds have caused the image to drift, provide the original asset again rather than continuing indefinitely from a compromised version.
What changed when it reached general availability
The October 2025 GA release made the model more practical for production workflows in two important ways:
- Ten aspect ratios: Developers could request formats suited to banners, social posts, portrait artwork, product cards, and other layouts.
- Image-only output: Applications could request an image response without also receiving a text response, simplifying automated image pipelines.
The supported aspect ratios are:
| Format | Typical use |
|---|---|
21:9 |
Very wide banners and cinematic compositions |
16:9 |
Video, presentation, and landscape layouts |
4:3 |
Traditional screen and artwork proportions |
3:2 |
Common photographic and print-oriented format |
1:1 |
Square social and catalog images |
9:16 |
Vertical mobile and story layouts |
3:4 |
Portrait-oriented artwork |
2:3 |
Tall portrait and print compositions |
5:4 |
Near-square portrait or gallery layouts |
4:5 |
Portrait social-media compositions |
Aspect-ratio selection is not the same as high-resolution output. Google’s current documentation describes this model as optimized for images around 1,024 pixels. Selecting a wide or tall ratio changes the shape of the result; it does not turn the model into a native 4K production system.
How to try it
Google AI Studio
Google AI Studio is the simplest route for prompt testing and prototyping. It is aimed at developers and technically comfortable creators rather than people looking for a polished, layer-based photo editor. Availability, quotas, and controls can vary by account and region.

For an application, use the stable model identifier:
gemini-2.5-flash-image
The earlier preview identifier, gemini-2.5-flash-image-preview, is deprecated. Google’s SDK syntax may change, so check the current model documentation before deploying.

Here is Google’s Python workflow, adapted from its production announcement:
from google import genai
from google.genai import types
from PIL import Image
client = genai.Client()
prompt = (
"Create a photograph of the subject in this image as if they were "
"living in the 1980s. Preserve the subject's recognizable features "
"while changing the fashion, hairstyle, and atmosphere."
)
image = Image.open("/path/to/image.png")
response = client.models.generate_content(
model="gemini-2.5-flash-image",
contents=[prompt, image],
config=types.GenerateContentConfig(
response_modalities=["IMAGE"],
image_config=types.ImageConfig(
aspect_ratio="16:9",
),
),
)
for part in response.parts:
if part.inline_data is not None:
generated_image = part.as_image()
generated_image.show()
The workflow is straightforward: create or authenticate the GenAI client, load an input image, send the image with a natural-language instruction, request image output, optionally select an aspect ratio, and extract the returned inline image data.
Pricing
Google’s listed Gemini API prices for Gemini 2.5 Flash Image are:
| Usage mode | Input | Image output |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $0.30 per 1 million input tokens | $0.039 per image |
| Batch | $0.15 per 1 million input tokens | $0.0195 per image |
| Flex | $0.15 per 1 million input tokens | $0.0195 per image |
| Priority | $0.54 per 1 million input tokens | $0.0702 per image |
These are API prices, not the price of a consumer Gemini subscription. The standard image-output charge is based on output-token accounting: Google says $0.039 corresponds to approximately 1,290 output tokens for an image up to 1,024×1,024 pixels. Text and input-image charges still apply, and Google’s pricing page currently lists no free tier for this model’s API usage.
Batch and Flex can reduce the image charge for workloads that do not require interactive latency. Priority costs more and is relevant only when its service or latency advantages justify the difference. Vertex AI deployments can also involve Google Cloud billing, quotas, regions, infrastructure, and enterprise terms. Check the current pricing page before estimating a commercial workflow.
Technical limits that matter
Google’s current model documentation lists a 65,536-token input limit and a 32,768-token output limit. The model supports image and text input and image and text output, along with caching, Batch, Flex, and Priority inference.

Consistency is not identity preservation
“Character consistency” means the model attempts to retain recognizable traits across generations. It is not a guarantee of perfect facial identity, exact product geometry, biometric identity, or pixel-level continuity. Inspect each result, particularly when a person, branded object, or repeat character matters.
Text, logos, and labels still need proofreading
Generated lettering may look convincing at a glance while containing subtle errors. Manually check legal copy, prices, ingredients, disclaimers, packaging, logos, street signs, interface screenshots, and other text before publication or sale.
Rights remain your responsibility
Image blending does not grant permission to use copyrighted photographs, trademarks, private people’s likenesses, or confidential business assets. Obtain the necessary rights and consent before uploading references or publishing the result.
SynthID is not a rights clearance system
Google says generated images include a SynthID watermark. This is a provenance measure, not a visible-watermark guarantee and not a replacement for disclosure, copyright review, model-policy checks, or human editorial judgment. Read Google’s image-generation documentation for the current details.

Developers can access the model through the Gemini API and Google AI Studio. Organizations can use Vertex AI for Google Cloud infrastructure and enterprise controls. Google also documented Gemini Enterprise availability for Nano Banana image generation and editing across Global, EU, and US multi-regions.

Those routes are not interchangeable. A consumer Gemini application may not expose the same model selection, aspect-ratio controls, quotas, billing, or editing behavior as AI Studio, the API, Vertex AI, or Gemini Enterprise. Access can vary by product, region, account, edition, and administrator settings.
Is Gemini 2.5 Flash Image still worth using in 2026?
It remains a sensible choice when an existing application already depends on it, when compatibility matters, or when a workflow is specifically tuned for its fast, approximately 1,024-pixel image generation. It can also be useful for conversational edits, marketing mockups, multi-image composites, product or outfit visualization, and high-volume applications that do not need 4K output.
For a new project, however, Google’s current image-generation guide treats it as the legacy Nano Banana model and points developers toward newer choices:

Most importantly, Nano Banana Pro is not the professional edition of Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. It is a separate newer Gemini 3 Pro Image model. The names describe a model family, not a simple preview-to-Pro upgrade path.
Alternatives for painters and creative teams
If you want a complete creative application rather than an API endpoint, Adobe Firefly and Adobe Express may be a better fit, particularly within an existing Adobe workflow. Google has identified Adobe products as integrations using Gemini 2.5 models.
Figma is more appropriate for collaborative interface design and prototyping. Freepik may suit creators who want stock assets alongside generative design tools, while Leonardo.Ai provides a dedicated visual-generation interface for iterative creative work. Google has cited all three in connection with Gemini 2.5 model integrations or early use. These products should not be treated as identical implementations of the Gemini API; their controls, pricing, and outputs are determined by the individual service.
Verdict
Gemini 2.5 Flash Image was an important Google image-model launch: it moved beyond one-shot text-to-image generation toward fast, conversational editing and multi-image composition, then became production-ready with ten aspect ratios and image-only output.
Recommended Free Tools
For painters and illustrators, it is best understood as a rapid visual ideation and transformation tool—not a replacement for a professional retouching or digital painting suite. It can accelerate concept development, mockups, reference exploration, and application-based editing, but every commercially important result still needs inspection for unintended changes, text errors, identity drift, and rights issues.
In 2026, choose it primarily for an established or compatibility-sensitive workflow. For new development, start with Nano Banana 2 Lite, Nano Banana 2, or Nano Banana Pro according to your priorities for cost, speed, general quality, creative control, current-world grounding, and resolution.
