Microsoft Designer can generate images from text descriptions in Word and PowerPoint through Copilot, but the feature is not available in the same way to every Office user. Standalone Designer and in-app image generation have different access conditions, so check your app, account, subscription, and organization settings before assuming the feature is included.
What Microsoft Designer does
Microsoft describes Designer as a graphic-design and image-editing tool that can create images and other designs from words. In Word, Microsoft documents using the Copilot pane to describe an image, generate options, and add a selected result to the document. Word’s image-generation feature uses Designer’s Image Creator.

For example, Microsoft suggests prompting: “Create an image of a modern office with bright colored furniture, lots of natural light and exotic plants.”
Designer is also available as a standalone service. It is not simply one universal image-generation button built into every Office application. The 2022 launch coverage associated Designer with OpenAI’s DALL·E 2; that historical detail should not be treated as a description of the current model implementation.

Where image generation appears
Microsoft documents image generation in Word through Copilot. In PowerPoint, Copilot may suggest a licensed stock image or generate an image from a prompt. These are different routes: check whether the result is stock content or generated content, and follow the applicable Microsoft 365 or Office license for its use.

Microsoft Support describes Word’s in-app image-generation eligibility for qualifying work or school accounts with a Microsoft 365 subscription, or Microsoft accounts with a qualifying Microsoft 365 home subscription. Its Designer FAQ separately discusses Copilot Pro for Word and PowerPoint on the web and a Microsoft 365 subscription for more fully featured desktop apps. Requirements can vary by platform and account, so verify the current guidance for your setup.

How to generate an image in Word
- Open Word and the Copilot pane, if it is available for your account and app.
- Describe the image you want, including its subject and useful visual details.
- Review the generated options for errors, unwanted details, and text problems.
- Select the result you want and add it to the document.
- Check the final document for readability, accessibility, accuracy, and suitability for your use.
If the in-app feature is unavailable, you can try the standalone Designer service and add a downloaded image to Word using its normal image-insertion tools.
Access, subscriptions, and credits
Microsoft says Designer is free to use for personal use with a Microsoft account, while a subscription may be required for people who want to create more frequently. Standalone access does not guarantee access to the same features inside Word or PowerPoint.

Microsoft says qualifying plans receive monthly AI credits and that one credit is deducted for each interaction with Copilot or Designer AI features. Microsoft also says Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium plans provide the account owner with up to four times more credits. Credits are shared across Microsoft AI experiences; these are current product-plan terms, not a promise of unlimited image generation.

Microsoft’s statement that Designer is free to use describes its service, not guaranteed access to every in-app Copilot feature or unlimited use. Check the current Microsoft 365 plan information and your account’s eligibility before subscribing.
Why the feature may be missing
Microsoft identifies several possible reasons a Designer or Copilot control may not appear or may be disabled. These include an ineligible account or subscription, regional age requirements, organization administrator settings, connected-experience settings, connectivity, or the state of the app or slide.
- Check whether the feature is available in your specific app and platform.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended account and check its subscription or license.
- If you use a work or school account, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator about licensing and policy settings.
- Check connected experiences, connectivity, and any app-specific conditions described by Microsoft Support.
- If in-app generation is unavailable, try standalone Designer and insert the resulting image manually where appropriate.
These steps can help identify a cause, but they do not guarantee that the feature can be enabled for every account.

Limitations and responsible use
Microsoft warns that text in generated images may not match the requested language or may contain spelling errors. Check all output rather than treating a polished image as proof of accuracy. Generated imagery is a poor substitute for a verified diagram, chart, map, or technical illustration when precision matters.
Microsoft says Designer images carry metadata identifying their source through content credentials and that it has controls intended to prevent harmful uploads or generations. These measures do not remove the need to review content before use.
Image licensing and permitted use
In PowerPoint, Microsoft distinguishes licensed stock images from images generated from prompts and says the applicable Microsoft 365 or Office license governs permitted use. Confirm which kind of image you selected and check the relevant license for your intended use. Do not assume that every generated image is copyright-free, exclusively owned by the user, or available for unrestricted standalone resale.
For public-facing or commercial work, consider applicable trademark, privacy, publicity, and other rights, as well as the laws and license terms relevant to your use. For high-value or regulated material, seek appropriate human legal and editorial review.
