Mixup was reported as an iOS app that made AI images from fill-in-the-blank “recipes.” Users could supply photos, text, or doodles, then try recipes from a public feed with their own inputs. An archived app listing says Apple no longer distributed Mixup as of December 31, 2025; no current availability or relaunch has been confirmed.

The app came from Things, Inc., the company behind the 3D design app Rooms. Its reported launch concept was a social creative toy: the prompt became a template that a community could remix.

What is Mixup?

Mixup was a consumer AI image-making app built around reusable prompt templates called recipes. A recipe gave users a structured idea with blank slots for inputs such as a photograph, a written description, or a sketch.

For example, a recipe might ask you to “turn [a photo of my dog] into [a Renaissance portrait] wearing [a text-described costume].” You supplied the requested ingredients, and Mixup generated the result.

That approach was designed for people who wanted to experiment with image generation without composing detailed prompts. TechCrunch reported that Mixup used Google’s Nano Banana image model and OpenAI technology for part of its moderation. Mixup was an independent Things, Inc. app, not a Google product. These are launch-report details, not confirmation of a current service or implementation. TechCrunch reported that the recipe format was intended to make it easier to get started than a blank prompt box.

The feed showed an image alongside its recipe, which the team said could help users anticipate what a recipe might produce. That is a product rationale, not independent evidence that recipes improve usability or make results consistent.

How the recipe and remix loop worked

  1. Choose an existing recipe or create a new one.
  2. Provide the requested photo, text, or doodle.
  3. Let Mixup generate an image.
  4. Choose whether to publish the recipe with its result or download the image for personal use.
  5. Other users browse the public feed and try a recipe with their own input.

This made Mixup closer to a remixable creative game or template community than to a conventional standalone image generator. A recipe did not guarantee that another person’s version would look the same; the available reporting does not establish repeatability across different inputs.

Photos, text, and doodles

Launch reporting described three broad types of input:

  • Photos: visual references such as a person, pet, or object.
  • Text: descriptions that supply an idea for the generated image.
  • Doodles or sketches: rough drawings used as input.

The app’s in-app doodle feature broadened the experience beyond ordinary photo-based prompts. The launch report does not establish how precisely sketches were interpreted or document every available control, such as selective regeneration or negative prompts.

Mixables make the app more social—and raise the biggest privacy question

The launch report said Mixup let users upload photos as reusable identities or subjects called mixables. People who followed someone who had uploaded a mixable could reportedly use that likeness in new AI images.

That could be entertaining among consenting friends, but could also enable unwanted transformations, humiliation, or impersonation. A person’s face could appear in contexts they never expected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not upload another person’s image without permission. Be especially cautious with children, coworkers, and anyone who may not understand how an image could be reused. Following someone is not the same as receiving unlimited permission to use their likeness.

The launch report does not comprehensively document consent, visibility, or deletion controls. It does not establish whether users could make a mixable private, disable remixing, delete generated copies, or revoke permission after another user generated an image. Nor does it establish the rules for protecting minors, reporting harassment, face detection, image retention, or model training. Check current terms and privacy information before uploading a recognizable face; current official documentation was not found in the research.

Moderation is not a complete safety guarantee

The launch report said Mixup relied on controls built into Google’s image model to restrict sexual content and violence, alongside OpenAI technology for some moderation. These are reported launch details, not an independent assessment of safety or effectiveness.

They do not prove that every abusive, defamatory, non-consensual, or impersonating image would be blocked. The available sources do not explain a current reporting process, appeals, deletion requests, or enforcement standards.

Verdict

Mixup’s distinctive idea was to make the image-generation formula shareable. Users could discover a recipe, reuse it with their own input, and share a new result, making image creation feel more like a creative game than writing a prompt from scratch.

That design may have lowered the barrier to experimenting, but the launch reporting leaves important questions about likeness controls, current availability, and terms unanswered. Take particular care with recognizable people’s images: the reported mixables feature allowed other users to generate images using an uploaded likeness.

FAQ

How did Mixup work?

Users chose or made a fill-in-the-blank recipe, supplied a photo, text, or doodle, and generated an image. Recipes and results could be shared through a public feed, while creators could also download an image for personal use.

The launch report said followers could use a person’s uploaded likeness through mixables. The available research does not comprehensively document visibility, consent, or deletion controls, so do not upload a recognizable image unless you are comfortable with the potential for reuse.

Is Mixup still available?

Current availability is unconfirmed. AppsHunter’s archived listing says Apple no longer distributed the app as of December 31, 2025, and the research found no official relaunch statement.
