PageMaker एक Desktop Publishing (DTP) और page-layout software था, जिसका उपयोग किताबों, पत्रिकाओं, brochures, pamphlets, newsletters, business cards और अन्य print documents का layout बनाने के लिए किया जाता था। इसमें text, images, columns, borders और headings को पेज पर व्यवस्थित करके professional-looking publication तैयार की जाती थी।
महत्वपूर्ण बात यह है कि PageMaker अब discontinued product है और Adobe का इसका official support बंद हो चुका है। आज नए users के लिए इसका आधुनिक विकल्प मुख्य रूप से Adobe InDesign है।
PageMaker क्या है?
PageMaker का पूरा practical अर्थ समझने के लिए पहले DTP जानना उपयोगी है। DTP का अर्थ है Desktop Publishing—कंप्यूटर पर text, pictures और design elements को व्यवस्थित करके छपने योग्य पेज तैयार करना।
PageMaker में text boxes बनाकर सामग्री रखी जाती थी, images import की जाती थीं और page size, margins, columns, fonts तथा spacing नियंत्रित की जाती थी। इसलिए यह केवल typing या सामान्य document लिखने का program नहीं था, बल्कि publication layout तैयार करने वाला software था।

PageMaker कैसे काम करता था?
- Publication का page size, orientation और margins तय किए जाते थे।
- Text को type या import करके text frames में रखा जाता था।
- Photos और illustrations को document में import किया जाता था।
- Columns, headings, borders और अन्य elements को page पर arrange किया जाता था।
- Fonts, alignment, spacing और paragraph formatting सुधारी जाती थी।
- हर पेज को proofread करके text overflow, गलत breaks और missing graphics जाँचे जाते थे।
- अंतिम layout को print या उपलब्ध export workflow के माध्यम से output के लिए भेजा जाता था।
PageMaker और MS Word में अंतर

इसका अर्थ यह नहीं है कि Word में brochure या simple design नहीं बनाया जा सकता। अंतर यह है कि PageMaker शुरू से publication layout के लिए बनाया गया था, जबकि Word का मूल उद्देश्य text documents तैयार करना है।
PageMaker और Photoshop में अंतर
- PageMaker: पूरे page या multi-page publication का layout बनाता था।
- Photoshop: photos edit करने, image manipulation और raster graphics के लिए बनाया गया है।
एक वास्तविक print workflow में Photoshop में photo सुधारी जा सकती है और फिर उसी photo को PageMaker के brochure या magazine layout में रखा जा सकता है। PageMaker, Photoshop का replacement नहीं था।

PageMaker multi-page documents और publication layout के लिए अधिक suitable था। दूसरी ओर, Illustrator और CorelDRAW vector artwork, logos, illustrations और precise drawing के लिए अधिक उपयोगी हैं। Print work में इन programs को साथ इस्तेमाल किया जा सकता था—उदाहरण के लिए logo Illustrator में बनाकर PageMaker layout में import करना।
PageMaker का इतिहास
PageMaker का मूल संबंध Aldus Corporation से था और यह desktop-publishing revolution से जुड़े प्रभावशाली programs में से एक बना। बाद में Adobe ने Aldus के बाद PageMaker को अपनी product line में आगे बढ़ाया।
Adobe के India-history लेख के अनुसार, Adobe PageMaker 7.0 को 2001 में भारत से पूरी तरह ship किया गया था। बाद के वर्षों में Adobe ने users और publishing workflows को InDesign की ओर स्थानांतरित किया। अधिक ऐतिहासिक पृष्ठभूमि के लिए Aldus PageMaker का इतिहास देखा जा सकता है, हालांकि launch-date जैसे विवरणों को historical secondary reference के रूप में समझना चाहिए।

क्या PageMaker आज भी उपलब्ध या उपयोगी है?
PageMaker discontinued है। Adobe का PageMaker Support Center legacy troubleshooting सामग्री दिखाता है, जिसमें PageMaker 6.0–7.x और 7.0.1 से जुड़े मुद्दे शामिल हैं, लेकिन नए development या सामान्य technical support की अपेक्षा नहीं करनी चाहिए।
पुराने computer या पुराने operating system पर कोई installation चल जाए, यह modern Windows या macOS के लिए reliability की guarantee नहीं है। Version, system compatibility, fonts और पुराने plug-ins के कारण समस्या आ सकती है।
“Free PageMaker download” वाली अनधिकृत websites से सावधान रहें। Discontinued होने का अर्थ यह नहीं कि software freely downloadable या legally redistributable है। ऐसे installers में licensing risk, malware और activation-related समस्याएँ हो सकती हैं।
क्या PageMaker सीखना आज भी उपयोगी है?
Basic DTP concepts सीखने के लिए—हाँ; नए professional career के लिए अकेले PageMaker पर निर्भर रहना—नहीं।
PageMaker से margins, columns, typography, alignment, text flow और print composition जैसे मूल concepts समझे जा सकते हैं। यह ज्ञान आज भी उपयोगी है, खासकर यदि किसी student को पुराने DTP course notes या legacy files के साथ काम करना हो। लेकिन नए projects और रोजगार-उन्मुख learning के लिए modern page-layout software सीखना बेहतर है।

PageMaker की जगह कौन-सा software सीखें?
1. Adobe InDesign
Professional publishing के लिए सबसे सीधा modern विकल्प Adobe InDesign है। यह books, magazines, brochures, print publications और digital publishing के लिए बनाया गया है तथा Photoshop, Illustrator और Acrobat जैसे Adobe tools के साथ workflow दे सकता है।
Trade-off यह है कि Adobe plans subscription-based होते हैं और नए beginners को InDesign PageMaker से अधिक complex लग सकता है। Adobe India की कीमत, trial, tax और billing terms समय के साथ बदल सकते हैं, इसलिए खरीदने से पहले official page पर वर्तमान जानकारी देखें।
2. Scribus
Scribus open-source DTP tool की तलाश कर रहे students, hobbyists और छोटे organizations के लिए विकल्प हो सकता है। इसका interface और workflow InDesign से अलग है। Scribus documentation में कुछ Adobe PageMaker formats के support का उल्लेख है, लेकिन इससे हर legacy file के perfect conversion की guarantee नहीं मिलती।

पुरानी PageMaker file कैसे खोलें या convert करें?
पुरानी files में अक्सर .pmd, .pm6 या अन्य legacy formats मिल सकते हैं। Adobe के archived InDesign documentation में PageMaker 6.0 और बाद के documents/templates को InDesign में खोलने या convert करने की जानकारी दी गई है। यह workflow हर file पर perfect result की guarantee नहीं देता।
- Original PageMaker file की duplicate backup copy बनाएँ और original को overwrite न करें।
- File के साथ इस्तेमाल हुए linked images, graphics और fonts भी इकट्ठे करें।
- Compatible Adobe InDesign installation या qualified conversion environment उपलब्ध करें।
- InDesign में PageMaker document खोलने या import करने का प्रयास करें।
- Missing fonts और missing links की सूची देखें और उन्हें ठीक करें।
- Text overflow, page breaks, images, colors और master-page elements की जाँच करें।
- जहाँ आवश्यक हो, layout manually correct करें।
- PDF export करके preflight और print proof करें।
- Final printing से पहले margins, bleed, font substitution और image quality फिर से जाँचें।
Conversion में fonts, linked graphics, plug-ins, paragraph spacing, tables, transparency और printer-specific settings बदल सकते हैं। यदि editable legacy file नहीं खुलती, तो उपलब्ध PDF से layout को नए software में recreate करना पड़ सकता है।
ध्यान दें: PageMaker की file extension को Microsoft Publisher की .pub extension से न मिलाएँ। दोनों अलग software के file formats हैं।
हिंदी में PageMaker का उपयोग
“PageMaker हिंदी में” दो अलग प्रश्न हो सकते हैं: क्या software का user interface हिंदी में था, और क्या उसमें हिंदी text लगाया जा सकता था। ये एक ही बात नहीं हैं। Hindi text handling fonts, encoding, shaping, version और computer setup पर निर्भर कर सकती थी; इसलिए किसी specific PageMaker version और setup के बिना full Hindi support या Hindi-language interface का निश्चित दावा नहीं करना चाहिए।
यदि आपका लक्ष्य आज हिंदी किताब, magazine या brochure बनाना है, तो ऐसा modern DTP tool चुनें जिसमें Unicode Hindi, OpenType fonts, सही text shaping और PDF export आपके operating system पर ठीक से काम करें।
