Google Mixboard is an experimental, browser-based Google Labs tool for building visual concept boards with AI. You can start with a prompt, add your own images and text, generate new references, and request natural-language edits or variations. It is best understood as an AI-assisted ideation canvas—not a replacement for Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva, Miro, or a professional project-management system.
Mixboard launched as a U.S. public beta on September 23, 2025. Google later announced expansion to more than 180 additional countries, but access remains region- and account-dependent. Check the current Mixboard page before assuming it is available where you live.
What is Google Mixboard?
Mixboard combines a freeform canvas with AI image generation, image editing, uploaded references, and contextual text. Rather than collecting every reference manually, you can describe a direction and use the resulting board to explore it.

Google describes Mixboard as an “AI-powered concepting board.” Its announced use cases include home décor, event themes, DIY projects, product ideas, storyboards, fashion, and visual style exploration. The tool is particularly useful during the stage when you are comparing possibilities rather than producing final artwork.
How Mixboard differs from a conventional moodboard
A traditional moodboard usually involves finding, downloading, cropping, arranging, and annotating existing references. Mixboard adds an iterative AI loop:
- Describe an idea.
- Generate visual references.
- Arrange promising images and notes on the canvas.
- Ask for variations or edits.
- Compare directions and refine the concept.
That makes Mixboard closer to an AI ideation canvas than a simple collage maker. Its strength is speed: it can help turn a vague visual idea into several directions quickly.
What can Mixboard do?

Google has also announced larger boards, PDF uploads, selfie capture, and doodle-based image edits. Because Mixboard remains experimental, interface labels, limits, supported formats, and feature availability can change.

Google associated Mixboard’s image-generation and editing workflow with Nano Banana. Google later described presentation generation as powered by Nano Banana Pro. That does not establish that every Mixboard function uses the same model.
How to use Mixboard
The exact controls may change, but the high-level workflow is:
- Open Google Mixboard and sign in if prompted.
- Start a board or choose an example or pre-populated board.
- Enter a concise concept prompt.
- Add useful generated images to the canvas.
- Upload your own references where appropriate.
- Arrange, group, and compare images spatially.
- Select an image and request a natural-language edit or variation.
- Use “regenerate” or “more like this” to explore alternatives.
- Add notes about the audience, materials, palette, mood, and constraints.
- Use contextual text generation when you need descriptions or planning notes.
- Create separate boards for competing directions or project stages.
- If the feature is available, turn the board into a presentation or use the current share and export controls.
Do not treat the board as the only copy of important work. Preserve valuable images, notes, and decisions outside the experiment.

Refining an image
“Keep the room layout and palette, but make the furniture more compact, add concealed cable management, and replace the open shelving with closed storage.”
Comparing constraints
“Generate three alternatives: one budget-friendly, one premium, and one suitable for a small rental apartment.”
Useful prompts specify the subject, intended use, style, colors, materials, viewpoint, cultural or geographic context, what must remain consistent, and what should change. Better prompts improve direction and consistency, but they cannot guarantee accurate dimensions, real products, feasible construction, or available materials.
Is Google Mixboard free?
Mixboard is presented as a Google Labs experiment, not as a conventional paid Google Workspace product. The available Google announcements do not establish a standard subscription price or a permanent unlimited-free promise.

Generation limits may fluctuate. Google specifically noted that limits for presentation generation can depend on server load and network traffic. Check the live interface for sign-in requirements, quotas, regional restrictions, and any newly introduced plans or limits.
Who should use Mixboard?
- Interior designers and homeowners: Explore palettes, furniture directions, room styles, and décor concepts.
- Event planners: Develop wedding, dinner, party, or seasonal themes.
- Marketers and brand teams: Compare broad visual directions before formal identity work.
- Product ideators: Create rough references for packaging, objects, or consumer products.
- Artists and creators: Explore styles, compositions, storyboards, and visual narratives.
- Students: Externalize and compare ideas quickly.
Who should choose another tool?
Mixboard is a poor fit if you need final logos, precise typography, manufacturing-ready specifications, accurate architectural drawings, a controlled asset library, enterprise permissions, dependable version history, or a full project-management workflow.
It is also unsuitable for treating AI output as technical evidence. A generated room may contain impossible construction, incorrect measurements, unsafe arrangements, or materials that do not exist in the pictured form.

Important limitations
It is experimental
Google Labs products can change substantially, lose features, become region-limited, or be discontinued. Use Mixboard as an ideation surface rather than a guaranteed long-term archive.

Access and limits vary
Google announced expansion beyond the United States to more than 180 additional countries, but the current landing page may still show a regional-availability error. Availability can also depend on the account. Generation capacity and quotas may change.
AI output needs human review
Generated images can contain inconsistent objects, incorrect details, accidental logos or lettering, impossible construction, and false precision. Generated text can also be wrong. Image edits may change more than requested, so keep the original reference and duplicate promising variants before refining them.
Text inside generated images is often unreliable. Use Mixboard to establish visual direction, then add final typography in a conventional design tool.
Be careful with uploads
No Mixboard-specific privacy policy was established by the sources available here. Do not upload confidential client work, unreleased designs, identity documents, private medical information, or sensitive photographs until the current Mixboard terms and privacy notice provide the protections you need. Do not assume that policies for other Google experimental or Workspace products apply to Mixboard.

Copyright and likeness still matter
Uploading an image does not automatically give you permission to remix or republish it. Obtain appropriate permissions for client assets, commercial work, celebrity imagery, and recognizable people. A generated product image is not proof that the pictured product exists, and AI output is not automatically commercially cleared.
The verdict
Google Mixboard is compelling when the main challenge is generating and comparing visual ideas quickly. It adds an AI generation and editing loop to the familiar moodboard canvas, making it useful for early work in interiors, events, branding, products, fashion, storyboarding, and painting-related visual exploration.
It is not a complete replacement for Canva’s production tools, Milanote’s structured research workspace, Miro or FigJam’s team whiteboards, or Adobe’s precision applications. Use Mixboard to explore possibilities, then verify the concept and finish important work in a stable tool with the control, permissions, file handling, and technical accuracy your project requires.
