Choose ibisPaint if you need Android, Windows, or Mac support, want to start free, create manga or anime art, or are working with existing hardware. Choose Procreate if you already own a compatible iPad and Apple Pencil and want an iPad-first illustration workflow with extensive brush customization, polished gestures, 3D painting, and simple frame-by-frame animation.
Neither app is the universal winner. The better choice depends first on your device, then on your art style, budget, file workflow, and backup expectations.
Quick verdict
| Situation | Best first choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Android phone or tablet | ibisPaint | Procreate’s main drawing app is not available for Android. |
| Windows or Mac | ibisPaint, Krita, or Clip Studio Paint | Procreate has no native Windows or Mac version. |
| Already own an iPad and Apple Pencil | Procreate | Its interface, gestures, pressure controls, and brush system are built around iPad use. |
| Starting with no budget | ibisPaint X | You can begin without buying an app, although ads and feature restrictions apply. |
| Manga, anime, and screen-tone work | ibisPaint | Its accessible manga-oriented toolset and broad device support are strong advantages. |
| Painterly illustration and brush design | Procreate | Brush Studio and Apple Pencil integration make it a strong iPad-first option. |
| 3D painting | Procreate | The app supports 3D painting and OBJ/USDZ workflows. |
| Serious animation | Procreate Dreams or a dedicated animation app | Basic animation in either drawing app is not the same as a complete production timeline. |
The biggest difference is platform
ibisPaint officially supports Windows, Mac, iPhone and iPad, and Android devices. That makes it the practical choice for artists who move between a phone, tablet, and computer—or who do not want to purchase an iPad solely to draw.

Procreate is an iPad application. The current official FAQ identifies version 5.4.12 and requires iPadOS 16.3 or later; check the official compatibility information for current device requirements. Procreate does not provide the full app on Android or Windows. Procreate Pocket is a separate iPhone product, not a Windows, Android, or desktop equivalent.
This is the first decision branch: if your primary drawing device is not an iPad, Procreate is not competing on equal terms. ibisPaint may be the better app simply because it fits the hardware you already use.
Pricing: compare the edition and the hardware
“ibisPaint” is not one single universal plan. Readers may encounter ibisPaint X, paid mobile versions, Premium Membership, Windows/Mac Premium Membership, and a Windows Pro Add-on. Prices and feature availability vary by platform, app store, and country.
The official ibisPaint pages checked in August 2026 showed these US pricing signals:
- Mobile free access, with a paid version listed at $15.99.
- Mobile Premium Membership listed at $2.99 per month or $27.99 per year.
- Windows Pro Add-on listed at $57.99 as a one-time purchase.
- Windows/Mac Premium Membership listed at $4.49 per month.
Use the mobile product page and Windows/Mac plan page to check the current price for your region and edition. Free access may include advertising, time limits, or locked features, so it should not be treated as identical to a paid version.
Procreate is sold through the US App Store listing. Its positioning is generally a one-time app purchase rather than a recurring subscription, but the current price should be checked in the live store before buying. The app price is only part of the calculation: a new Procreate user may also need an iPad, Apple Pencil, storage, and a backup plan.
Total cost of ownership
- Already own Android, Windows, or Mac hardware: ibisPaint is usually the lower-cost path.
- Already own an iPad and stylus: Procreate’s one-time app cost may be attractive compared with an ongoing membership.
- Need to buy an iPad and Pencil: Procreate is no longer a cheap app decision; compare the complete hardware cost with ibisPaint on your existing device.
- Need several devices: account-based ibisPaint cloud features may be more convenient, but confirm that your editions and plan support the workflow.
Feature comparison
| Feature | ibisPaint | Procreate |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | Android, iPhone/iPad, Windows, and Mac | iPad; Procreate Pocket is separate |
| Free entry point | Yes, through ibisPaint X or limited access | No equivalent free main app |
| Brush customization | Broad toolset; brush-pattern importing depends on plan | Brush Studio with more than 100 settings and custom brush import/export |
| Layers and masks | Layer-based painting with plan and version differences | Groups, masks, clipping masks, blend modes, and multi-layer transforms |
| Manga tools | Strong fit for screen tones, inking, rulers, and comic-style work | Useful comic and page features, including Page Assist |
| Animation | Available features and limits vary by edition and plan | Animation Assist for frame-by-frame work |
| 3D painting | Not the central differentiator | Supported, including OBJ and USDZ workflows |
| Cloud continuity | Official cross-platform Cloud Storage path | Primarily local iPad storage; export or back up deliberately |
| PSD workflow | Verify the current import/export behavior for your edition | Supported, but unsupported content may change or rasterize |
Brushes and drawing feel
Brush count is not a useful universal measure of quality. The important questions are how a brush responds to pressure and tilt, how easily you can stabilize an ink stroke, whether you can import the brushes you need, and how much control the engine exposes.
Procreate emphasizes an iPad-first brush workflow. The App Store listing highlights hundreds of built-in brushes, Brush Studio with more than 100 customizable settings, brush libraries, pressure-sensitive Apple Pencil support, and import/export for Procreate and Adobe Photoshop brushes. Recent version information also documents Apple Pencil Pro features such as barrel roll, squeeze, and haptic feedback support where compatible hardware allows them. See the official listing for current details.
ibisPaint offers a large, accessible selection of drawing, inking, texture, and manga-oriented tools across inexpensive hardware. Its official feature information identifies brush-pattern import limits that vary by plan. If a particular imported brush or texture matters to your workflow, check whether your edition includes it rather than assuming every plan behaves the same way.
For clean line art, test stabilization, pressure curves, fill behavior, and the availability of your preferred inking brushes. For painterly work, test texture, opacity buildup, blending, and tilt. Without an identical hands-on test, it is more accurate to call Procreate’s brush system more extensively customizable—not objectively better for every artist.

Layers, masks, and large canvases
Procreate supports layer groups, layer masks, clipping masks, more than 25 blend modes, multi-layer transformations, and layered PSD import and export. However, there is no single universal “maximum layer count.” Canvas dimensions, resolution, color settings, and iPad memory determine the available layers. Procreate directs users to a device-specific calculator through its official FAQ and help resources.
ibisPaint’s practical layer capacity is likewise affected by the device, canvas size, version, and file type. Avoid claims that either app always has more layers. A small social-media canvas may allow a very different layer count from a 300-DPI comic page.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor print or large comic pages, plan around the canvas before you begin:
- Set the intended dimensions and resolution first.
- Check the app’s reported layer limit.
- Keep an editable master file and avoid merging layers until necessary.
- Export intermediate versions if the canvas becomes slow or storage becomes tight.
- Use smaller working files for thumbnails, sketches, and social-media variants.
If performance or storage becomes a problem, merging temporary layers, reducing unused history, or splitting a very large project into logical files can help—but these are compromises, not substitutes for a proper production workflow.
Which is better for manga, anime, and comics?
ibisPaint deserves a first look from manga and anime artists, particularly those working on Android or desktop devices. Its workflow is well matched to inking, fill tools, screen tones and patterns, perspective rulers, symmetry, clipping, and social-media illustrations. These strengths make it a strong fit for single illustrations, fan art, character art, and many short comic projects.
Procreate is also capable of comic and page work. Its Page Assist feature supports page-by-page concepts and comics, and the app supports PDF import and export. It becomes especially appealing when the comic artist already owns an iPad and wants the same app to handle painting, custom brushes, gestures, and illustration work.

Neither ibisPaint nor Procreate should automatically be treated as a complete replacement for every desktop comic application.
Animation: simple frames versus a production timeline
Procreate includes Animation Assist for frame-by-frame animation, onion skinning, storyboards, GIFs, animatics, and exports such as animated GIF, PNG, and MP4. It is suitable for rough animation, short loops, and animated illustrations.
ibisPaint documentation also lists animation features, but access and limits vary by edition and plan. The Windows/Mac information specifically associates animation creation of any size with Premium-related access. Check current resolution, frame, export, and plan limits before committing to a project.
For timeline-based animation, audio, multiple tracks, video, and keyframing, use the separate Procreate Dreams app or dedicated animation software. Dreams is not an animation mode inside Procreate; it is a separate product with its own compatibility and pricing. Neither main drawing app should be marketed as a full film-production suite.

Files, PSD, and moving projects
Procreate’s native .procreate format preserves editable artwork and time-lapse data. Its documented formats also include PSD, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, PDF, MP4, HEVC, HEIC, OBJ, and USDZ. The full list and compatibility notes are in Procreate’s file-format documentation.
Layered PSD is useful when moving artwork between applications, but it is not a guarantee of perfect fidelity. Unsupported text, masks, filters, blend modes, effects, or other structures may be altered or rasterized. Before transferring a valuable project, export both the native editable file and a flattened PNG or TIFF preview, then inspect the imported result.
For ibisPaint, verify the current import/export matrix for your edition, especially native project files, layered PSD, PDF, transparency, and animation formats. The existence of a shared format does not mean that every layer behaves identically in both apps.
Cloud sync and backup: the difference that can cost you work
ibisPaint provides an official Cloud Storage path for synchronizing artwork between Windows/Mac and iOS/Android versions. The mobile documentation says users must sign in with an ibisAccount, X, Facebook, or Apple account. The Windows/Mac plan page lists up to 20 GB of cloud storage with Premium Membership compared with 64 MB in lower-access tiers. Confirm the current allowance and supported editions before relying on it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Procreate saves artwork locally on the iPad. Its official guidance emphasizes exporting artwork or backing up the entire iPad rather than assuming that your projects are automatically available in a browsable cloud account.
Procreate backup path
- Open the Gallery.
- Tap Select.
- Select canvases or stacks.
- Tap Share.
- Choose the Procreate format to preserve layer information and settings.
- Save to Files, iCloud Drive, another cloud service, or an external destination.
Follow Procreate’s backup instructions and its export and sharing guidance.
Common data-loss mistakes include reinstalling Procreate without exporting projects, assuming an iPad backup is the same as an independently browsable archive, signing into the wrong ibisPaint account, and treating one synchronized copy as a second backup. Keep at least one copy somewhere separate from the drawing device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What switching from ibisPaint to Procreate feels like
Procreate’s interface is deliberately streamlined and gesture-driven. That can make frequent actions fast once learned, but an ibisPaint user may initially miss a denser conventional tool layout, familiar fill behavior, specific manga tools, or an existing brush library.
ibisPaint exposes a broad range of tools in a way that may feel immediately familiar to artists who prefer visible controls. Its edition differences and larger feature surface can also require more attention when choosing a plan or finding a setting.
Neither “easier” nor “more professional” is an objective conclusion. The best test is to recreate one real task from your workflow: sketch, stabilized inking, flat colors, clipping, screen tones, text, export, and backup. A polished interface does not automatically make every migration faster.

Can either app replace Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint?
Sometimes, but not for every production. Both can handle finished illustrations, layered artwork, selections, color work, and exports. You may still need another application for advanced typography, vector editing, batch processing, deep color-management workflows, complex multi-page publishing, extensive 3D references, or large team production.
Krita is worth considering for desktop-first painting on Windows, Mac, or Linux. Adobe Fresco is relevant to artists already invested in Adobe’s ecosystem. Clip Studio Paint is particularly relevant to serious manga and comic production.

The app does not determine whether your original illustration can be sold. Procreate’s guidance says artwork created with its default tools is the user’s content, while included example artwork, app graphics, certain 3D model-pack objects, fonts, and third-party brushes can have separate restrictions. Review the current commercial-use guidance.
For ibisPaint, consult its current terms and check the license for every imported brush, font, texture, image, model, or reference asset. Do not assume that a free download or a built-in asset automatically grants unrestricted commercial rights.
How to choose in five questions
- What device will you use? Android, Windows, and Mac point to ibisPaint; an iPad points to comparing both.
- Are you buying hardware? Include the iPad and stylus in the Procreate budget.
- What do you draw? Manga and screen-tone workflows favor ibisPaint; painterly and brush-experimentation workflows deserve a close look at Procreate.
- How will projects move and survive? ibisPaint’s cross-platform cloud path is convenient; Procreate requires a deliberate export and backup habit.
- How advanced is the animation? Simple loops may fit either; audio, tracks, and keyframes point to Procreate Dreams or another dedicated tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ibisPaint better than Procreate for beginners?
ibisPaint is usually the easier recommendation for a beginner who wants free access or uses Android, Windows, or Mac. Procreate is a strong beginner option when the artist already owns a compatible iPad and prefers its streamlined interface.
Can I use Procreate on Android or Windows?
No. The main Procreate app is for iPad. Procreate Pocket is a separate iPhone app and is not a Windows or Android version.
Recommended Free Tools
Is ibisPaint free?
ibisPaint has free access through ibisPaint X or limited editions, but ads, time limits, locked features, and plan differences apply. Check the current edition and region-specific listing.
Is Procreate a subscription?
The main Procreate app is generally sold as a one-time purchase through the App Store. Check the live store listing for the current price and availability in your country.
Can ibisPaint and Procreate open the same files?
They can share formats such as PSD in supported workflows, but compatibility is not perfect. Unsupported layers, text, masks, effects, and blend modes may change or be rasterized.
Should I switch if I already know ibisPaint?
Switch only for a specific benefit, such as iPad integration, Procreate’s brush customization, or 3D painting. If ibisPaint already supports your device and workflow, changing apps is not automatically an upgrade.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Yes for the main Procreate drawing app. You also need a compatible iPadOS version and, for pressure-sensitive drawing, a compatible stylus is strongly recommended.
