A drawing tablet can mean a screenless pen tablet, a computer-connected pen display, or a standalone tablet that runs drawing apps. Choose based first on whether you already have a compatible computer and whether you need to draw away from your desk; those choices matter more than a headline pressure-level count.
A screenless tablet is usually the lower-cost computer-based option, a pen display lets you draw directly on a screen but needs a host computer, and a standalone model works without one. The examples below are documented products, not a tested or definitive ranking.

XPPen lists 16,384 pressure levels and an 8,000 mAh battery, and claims up to 13 hours of use under specified conditions, including 50% display brightness. Those are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent test results; actual use can vary.
Huion Kamvas 13 (Gen 3): pen-display example
Windows Central describes the Huion Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) as a computer-connected pen display with a 1920 × 1080 screen, 99% sRGB gamut coverage, and anti-glare glass. Treat these as reported product details, not a finding that it is the best beginner display. Its cited promotional prices were tied to a sale period that ended September 15, 2026, so do not use them as current prices.
Huion Kamvas Pro 16 V2: larger pen-display example
Huion’s comparison page lists the Kamvas Pro 16 V2 with a 15.6-inch Full HD screen, PenTech 4.0, fully laminated canvas glass, a paper-like surface texture, six press keys, and a touch strip. Huion also claims 99% sRGB and 99% Rec. 709 coverage. These are manufacturer-reported specifications, not independent measurements.

Huion lists the Kamvas Pro 19 with an 18.4-inch 4K screen, PenTech 4.0, multitouch, and color-coverage specifications. Use those as features to verify against your needs; the specifications alone do not establish superior drawing performance.

Windows Central describes the Huion Inspiroy 2 M as a budget screenless drawing tablet with a battery-free pen and programmable keys. Check Huion’s current product information for the exact bundled pen and specifications before purchase.
How to choose
1. Decide whether you need a computer
- Choose a screenless tablet or pen display if you will draw using a compatible Windows, macOS, or other supported computer and its applications.
- Choose a standalone tablet if you want to run drawing apps without carrying a separate computer. Verify that the apps you need support its operating system.
- Remember that a pen display is not necessarily a standalone device: it generally needs a host computer.
2. Choose screenless or direct-on-screen drawing
With a screenless tablet, you draw on the tablet surface while looking at a separate monitor. It can be a compact input device, but the hand-eye disconnect may take adjustment. A pen display puts the drawing surface on a screen, but adds display, cable, driver, and host-computer requirements.

3. Check the whole workflow, not just pen sensitivity
Compare host-device compatibility, app support, active area or screen size, resolution, surface texture and glare, color coverage, portability, shortcut controls, included pen and nibs, cable needs, and total cost. Pressure-level counts are not directly comparable across manufacturers and do not alone establish drawing quality.
4. Verify the exact model and package
Products with similar names can differ by generation, region, included accessories, and supported connections. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications and driver support, then confirm that the required pen, cables, stand, or adapters are included or available for your region.
5. Treat specifications and recommendations carefully
Manufacturer pages establish what a manufacturer claims, not independent test performance. Attribute specifications to their source, and distinguish a reviewer’s assessment from a product specification. This guide does not claim first-hand testing or a comparative ranking.

Do I need a computer for a drawing tablet?
Not always. Screenless pen tablets and most pen displays connect to a computer. A standalone drawing tablet runs apps on its own; verify the specific model and app compatibility before buying.
Should I buy a pen display or a screenless tablet?
Choose a pen display if drawing directly on the image matters enough to justify a screen-connected setup. Choose screenless if you are comfortable looking at a separate monitor and want a compact computer input device.

Not by itself. Pressure counts are manufacturer specifications and are not a consistent measure of drawing feel across brands. Also consider compatibility, pen behavior, surface, controls, and how the tablet fits your workflow.
