In Adobe Premiere Pro, crop removes visible areas from the edges, scale changes how large the clip appears, and rotate changes its orientation. To change the shape or pixel dimensions of the finished video, you must also consider the sequence and export settings.

For the quickest workflow, select the clip and open Window > Properties. For keyframes, anchor-point adjustments, and more detailed animation, use Window > Effect Controls > Motion. Adobe documents both workflows, although labels can vary by Premiere version, workspace, and language installation.

Before you start: clip size is not sequence size

Import the video, place it on a timeline, and select the clip. Before making adjustments, confirm the sequence frame size and orientation. A clip’s scale changes its appearance inside the sequence; it does not change the sequence’s dimensions.

For example, a 1920×1080 sequence remains 1920×1080 after you crop a clip. To create a vertical, square, or custom canvas, change the sequence frame size through the sequence settings. To change the dimensions of the rendered file, set the frame size in the Export workspace.

See Adobe’s guides to sequence frame size and export video settings.

The fastest method: use the Properties panel

  1. Place the clip in a sequence and select it.
  2. Open Window > Properties.
  3. Adjust Crop, Scale, Rotation, and Position.
  4. Choose Fit to frame when the entire image should remain visible, or Fill frame when the sequence should be completely covered.
  5. Preview the clip in the Program Monitor and correct the framing.

The Properties panel’s crop controls use percentages for the Left, Top, Right, and Bottom edges. Adobe also allows common adjustments to multiple selected clips, so check that only the intended clips are selected before editing.

When source and sequence aspect ratios differ, Fit to frame can leave letterboxing or pillarboxing. Fill frame removes that empty space by enlarging the image, but it may cut off part of the picture.

Adobe’s current documentation for this workflow is available in the Properties panel guide.

How to crop a video

Crop with Properties

Select the clip, open Properties, find Crop, and increase the percentage for the edge or edges you want to remove. Use Position afterward to center the remaining image or place the subject where you want it.

Crop changes what is visible; it does not stretch the remaining picture and does not automatically change the sequence or export resolution.

Crop with the Crop effect

  1. Open Window > Effects.
  2. Find Video Effects > Transform > Crop.
  3. Drag Crop onto the clip.
  4. Select the clip and open Window > Effect Controls.
  5. Adjust Left, Top, Right, and Bottom.

The Crop effect is useful when you want a separately managed effect that can be animated, copied, reordered, or saved as part of a preset. Its edge values are percentages of the image edges removed. Adobe’s reference for Crop and related Transform effects is the Transform effects guide.

Crop without distorting the image

Crop the edges or scale the clip proportionally; do not force width and height independently. If the subject is cut off, reduce the crop, lower the scale, or adjust Position. If you need to preserve the entire image, use Fit to frame and accept empty space or add a background design.

How to rotate a video

For a basic rotation, select the clip and change Rotation in the Properties panel. Alternatively, open Effect Controls > Motion > Rotation and enter a positive or negative degree value.

  • Sideways phone footage: use 90° or 270°.
  • Upside-down footage: use 180°.
  • Slightly tilted footage: use a small angle, then scale or crop to remove exposed corners.

After rotating a rectangular clip, inspect the corners and edges. A 90-degree rotation can change how the source fits inside the sequence, particularly when vertical footage is placed in a horizontal sequence. Increase Scale and adjust Position if necessary.

Every clip placed in a sequence has a fixed Motion effect. Adobe explains its Position, Scale, Rotation, and Anchor Point controls in the Motion effect documentation.

How to resize or scale a video

To make a clip larger or smaller inside the existing sequence, select it and adjust Scale in Properties or under Effect Controls > Motion > Scale. Adjust Position afterward if the subject moves away from the desired location.

You can also resize a clip visually in the Program Monitor when the clip is selected. For precise results, numeric Motion controls are easier to repeat and animate.

Fit to frame versus Fill frame

Option Result Use it when
Fit to frame Shows the entire image; mismatched ratios may produce bars. No important content may be lost.
Fill frame Covers the complete sequence frame; some image may be cropped. You want a full-bleed image without empty space.

Set to Frame Size versus Scale to Frame Size

These commands are related but not interchangeable. Set to Frame Size resizes the clip to fit while preserving the source’s native pixel resolution for later adjustments. Scale to Frame Size applies scaling through Premiere’s media-scaling behavior. Neither is universally better.

Preserve additional source resolution when you expect to zoom or reframe later. Applying scaling immediately may be appropriate when the media should be conformed to the sequence from the start. Adobe describes Set to Frame Size and the separate Scale to Frame Size preference in its documentation.

Make horizontal footage vertical or square

  1. Set the sequence to the intended vertical or square frame size through the sequence settings.
  2. Select the clip and use Fill frame, or increase Scale until the canvas is covered.
  3. Adjust Position so the subject remains visible.
  4. Apply Crop only if the composition still needs deliberate trimming.

Manual reframing is usually simplest for a static shot. For a moving subject or a sequence that must be adapted to several formats, use Auto Reframe.

Use Auto Reframe for moving subjects

For an individual clip, open Effects > Video Effects > Transform, apply Auto Reframe, and choose a motion setting:

  • Slower Motion: suited to relatively static content.
  • Default: a general starting point.
  • Faster Motion: intended for rapid action and potentially many generated keyframes.

Premiere generates Position keyframes to follow the subject. Review the whole clip and manually correct the keyframes wherever the subject is missed. Auto Reframe is a starting point, not a guarantee of perfect tracking. Adobe also provides an Auto Reframe Sequence workflow that supports square, vertical, cinematic, and custom target resolutions.

Animate crop, rotation, or scale

For changes over time, use Effect Controls. Select the clip, open Window > Effect Controls, expand Motion, and click the stopwatch beside Position, Scale, Rotation, or Anchor Point. Move the playhead, change the value, and Premiere creates another keyframe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To animate cropping, apply the Crop effect and keyframe its edge values in Effect Controls. Review the beginning, middle, and end of the clip; a framing change that looks correct on the first frame can cut off the subject later.

Apply the same adjustment to several clips

For a shared scale, rotation, or crop value, multi-select the clips and edit the corresponding Properties value. Premiere may show a dash when selected clips have different values; editing the value can apply a shared or relative change depending on how it is entered.

For a treatment that should affect everything beneath it, place an adjustment layer above the clips and apply the Crop or Transform effect to that layer. Resize the adjustment layer with Motion Scale and Position, and extend or shorten it by dragging its timeline edges. See Adobe’s guide to adjustment layers.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause Fix
Black bars or empty space Fit to frame with mismatched aspect ratios. Use Fill frame, increase Scale, crop the excess, or change the sequence dimensions.
Important content is cut off Excessive crop, scaling, or Fill frame. Switch temporarily to Fit to frame, reduce Scale, and adjust Position.
Stretched footage Width and height were changed non-proportionally. Use proportional Scale, Fit to frame, or Fill frame.
Black corners after rotation The rotated rectangle no longer fills the canvas. Increase Scale, reposition, crop deliberately, or add a background layer.
Soft enlarged footage The clip was enlarged beyond its effective source resolution. Use higher-resolution footage and avoid unnecessary enlargement. Render-quality settings cannot restore missing detail.
Crop controls are missing The wrong clip or panel is selected, or the interface differs by version. Select the clip, open Window > Properties, or apply Effects > Video Effects > Transform > Crop and inspect Effect Controls.
Auto Reframe misses the subject Tracking is imperfect or the motion setting is unsuitable. Try another motion setting and edit the generated Position keyframes.
Several clips change together Multiple clips are selected. Click a single intended clip before changing its values.

Export the correctly framed video

Before exporting, verify three separate things:

  1. The clip’s crop, rotation, scale, and Position.
  2. The sequence’s frame dimensions and orientation.
  3. The export format and output frame size.

Use the Export settings to enter custom width and height values when the selected format and codec support them. Preview the full exported frame, not only the Program Monitor, to confirm that no subject is cut off and that the output has the intended dimensions.

Use Maximum Render Quality can improve detail and reduce aliasing when scaling to a different frame size, and it can affect the rendering of scaling, rotation, and Position transformations. It may increase export time, so treat it as an optional quality setting rather than a universal requirement. It cannot make low-resolution footage genuinely detailed.

Which tool should you use?
