Yes. Current desktop Adobe Photoshop can generate images from natural-language text prompts. Start with a blank document, choose Generate Image from the Contextual Task Bar, describe what you want, select an available model, and choose from generated variations. Photoshop adds the selected result as a generative layer, so you can continue editing it with masks, adjustment layers, typography, retouching tools, and compositing workflows.
That is different from Generative Fill, which changes a selected area of an existing image. The workflow and the best tool depend on whether you are creating a scene from scratch or editing a photograph.
What Photoshop’s AI image tools can do
Adobe separates Photoshop’s generative features into several workflows:

How to generate an image from a text prompt in Photoshop
The clearest prompt-to-image workflow starts with a new, blank Photoshop document.
- Select File > New and create a blank document.
- If necessary, show the task bar with Window > Contextual Task Bar.
- In the Contextual Task Bar, select Generate Image.
- Enter a descriptive prompt.
- Choose an AI model if the model picker is available.
- Select Generate.
- Review the variations Photoshop provides.
- Select the variation you want to add to the canvas.
Photoshop generates multiple options for review rather than automatically delivering a finished, flattened composition. The chosen result is added as a generative layer, which lets you continue working non-destructively. Adobe’s current instructions are documented in Generate images with descriptive text prompts.
In practice, treat the first generation as source material. You may still need to crop it, correct color, mask edges, retouch details, sharpen or upscale it, and combine it with other artwork. Review anatomy, perspective, lighting, reflections, repeated patterns, and subject accuracy before using the result publicly.

How to use Generative Fill on an existing image
- Select File > Open and open an image.
- Use the Selection Brush or another selection tool to mark the area you want to change.
- Select Generative Fill in the Contextual Task Bar.
- Enter a prompt, or leave the prompt blank to have Photoshop fill the selection using surrounding pixels.
- Select Generate.
- Review the variations in the Properties panel.
For example, select an empty section of a landscape and prompt for “a winding stone path leading toward the mountains.” To remove an unwanted object, select it and leave the prompt blank or describe the replacement. Adobe’s step-by-step instructions are in Edit images with Generative Fill.
Use Generative Fill when the surrounding photograph matters. Generating a separate image and placing it over a photo may produce mismatched perspective, lighting, scale, and texture; an in-context edit is usually the better starting point.
How to write better Photoshop prompts
A useful structure is:
Subject + action or setting + composition + lighting + visual style + important constraints
Describe the subject specifically, then add where it is, how it should be framed, the light, and the desired medium or appearance. Iterate in smaller changes instead of trying to solve every problem in one enormous prompt. Adobe’s prompt guidance is available in its text-to-image prompting guide.

For difficult compositions, state the viewpoint and placement explicitly: “front-facing,” “three-quarter view,” “subject on the left,” or “open negative space on the right for copy.” These instructions can help, but they do not guarantee precise placement.
Can Photoshop use a reference image?
Yes. Photoshop can use a reference image to guide either the image’s visual appearance or its arrangement. In the Generate Image workflow, choose a reference option such as:
- Style: Guides the colors, texture, medium, or overall visual character.
- Composition: Guides layout and arrangement.
You can upload an image or choose a sample from the gallery, then enter a prompt and generate an image. The reference is guidance, not a promise that Photoshop will reproduce the source exactly. See Adobe’s reference-image instructions.
Which AI models are available in Photoshop?
Adobe’s June 2026 Photoshop documentation lists both Adobe and partner models. For Generate Image, the listed models include:

These lists are not universal guarantees. The models visible to you can depend on the Photoshop release, feature, account, plan, region, and platform. A partner model may behave differently from Firefly on the same prompt. Rather than assuming one model is always best, compare available models using the same prompt and inspect the model picker for any applicable usage information. Which Photoshop version do you need?
The workflow described here reflects Adobe’s Photoshop desktop documentation updated in June 2026. Adobe’s June 19, 2026 release notes identify Photoshop 2026 version 27.8 as the current desktop release at that time, while also listing a Photoshop 2025 long-term-support release.
Photoshop updates continuously, so menu labels and model availability may change. Do not assume that every older version includes Generate Image. If the feature is important, update through the Creative Cloud desktop app and check Adobe’s current release notes.
Does Photoshop AI work on the web, iPad, and mobile?
Desktop Photoshop has the most fully documented version of the Generate Image and model-picker workflow described above. Photoshop on the web, iPad, and mobile may offer Firefly-powered tools, but feature parity should not be assumed. Controls, model choices, and access can differ between surfaces.
Check the interface on your specific device and account before planning a workflow around a desktop-only control. Adobe separately discusses Photoshop web and mobile in its product information and Photoshop mobile and web announcement.
Does every generation use credits?
Not necessarily in the same way. Adobe’s generative-credit system distinguishes between standard features, premium features, and the entitlements attached to your plan.
- Generative credits are a usage allowance for eligible AI features across supported Adobe products.
- Most standard generative features use one credit per generation, according to Adobe, although some features can require more processing.
- Premium features or models may consume credits.
- Some qualifying Creative Cloud Pro, Firefly, and Credits plans can include unlimited access to standard generations.
Credits do not roll over under Adobe’s documented rules. If you exhaust the available allowance, Adobe says you can wait for the monthly reset or purchase an additional credit plan where available. Your account’s plan and the current Photoshop interface are the authoritative sources for your actual access. See Adobe’s generative-credit documentation.

How much does Photoshop AI cost?
There is no single “Photoshop AI price.” Access depends on your Photoshop or Creative Cloud plan, the feature, the model, your region, and whether you use desktop Photoshop or a separate Firefly plan.

Adobe also displayed time-limited promotions ending August 26, 2026. Prices, promotions, billing terms, and plan inclusions can change, so verify the live Adobe Firefly plans page before subscribing. Do not assume that a Firefly plan automatically includes the full desktop version of Photoshop; Adobe’s surfaced plan information specifically highlights Photoshop on the web and mobile for certain plans.

Adobe says outputs from Adobe Firefly AI models are safe for commercial use, and defines commercial use as activity involving commercial activity for a person, brand, or business. That is Adobe’s product and policy position, not a universal guarantee of copyright ownership or legal clearance for every image.
Before using a generated asset commercially:
- Confirm which model created it. Partner models can have different terms from Adobe’s Firefly models.
- Review the applicable Adobe and model-provider terms for your plan and workflow.
- Check for trademarks, recognizable people, copyrighted characters, private material, or restricted brand assets.
- Do not assume the output is unique; Adobe says outputs may not be unique.
- Keep records of the source material, prompts, edits, and approvals for important client work.
- Check whether Content Credentials are attached when exporting. Adobe says they can be applied on qualifying surfaces and circumstances.
For consequential advertising, packaging, editorial work, or client campaigns, human review remains essential. “Commercially safe” does not remove publicity-rights, trademark, privacy, contractual, or brand-clearance responsibilities. Read Adobe’s Firefly legal product description and the current plan terms.
Can Photoshop generate readable text inside an image?
Photoshop can generate an image from a prompt, but generated lettering is not reliable enough to treat as final copy. Signs, labels, logos, posters, interface mockups, and marketing graphics may contain distorted or misspelled text.
The safer production workflow is to generate the scene without important wording, then add the actual copy with Photoshop’s native Type tools. Check spelling, kerning, alignment, contrast, and legibility manually.
What to do if Generate Image is missing
- Confirm that your Photoshop release supports the feature.
- Update Photoshop through the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- Open a document and show the task bar with Window > Contextual Task Bar.
- Try a new blank document rather than an unusual or unsupported document state.
- Check the Adobe account, plan entitlement, and generative-credit status.
- Look for the generative-AI or sparkle controls and any paywall notice.
- Check whether the desired model is unavailable because of your region, plan, feature, or release.
- Restart Photoshop after an update or account change.
- If the control remains unavailable, use Adobe Firefly in a browser and import the selected result into Photoshop.
Adobe notes that generative features may be visible but paywalled when a plan does not provide access, and that model availability varies by feature.

Choose Photoshop when you want to generate an image and finish it professionally with layers, selections, masks, adjustment layers, compositing, retouching, typography, and controlled export.

Choose Firefly directly when you want a browser-first ideation tool, rapid concept generation, Firefly Boards, or Adobe’s broader generative-AI environment before bringing selected assets into Photoshop.
Consider Canva for template-led social graphics, presentations, and marketing layouts. Its AI image tools are integrated into a browser-based design environment, but it is generally less focused on advanced pixel-level retouching and layered compositing. Consider Midjourney or other standalone generators when image ideation and a distinctive model ecosystem matter more than native Photoshop editing. Midjourney is available at midjourney.com.

Photoshop’s strongest advantage is not simply that it can produce pixels from words. It combines generation with the production tools needed to turn those pixels into a finished composition.
Bottom line
Adobe Photoshop can generate images from text prompts through Generate Image, and it can edit existing pictures through Generative Fill. Use the blank-document workflow for new concepts and standalone scenes; use selections and Generative Fill for changes that must belong naturally inside an existing photograph.
For professional work, expect an iterative process: generate variations, choose a promising result, correct its weaknesses, add important typography manually, verify rights and subject accuracy, and finish the image with Photoshop’s normal editing tools. Feature availability, model choices, credits, and pricing change by plan, platform, region, and release, so confirm those details in Adobe’s current interface before committing to a workflow.
