You can usually open a PNG with an image viewer already on your device or in a web browser. To edit it, use an image editor that supports PNG; keep an original copy, export your result, and check that it still looks right and retains any transparency you need.
This guide explains what PNG files are, how to open and edit them, and what to check when choosing an editing workflow. Exact app steps and support for features such as transparency or animation can vary.
What is a PNG file?
PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. It is a raster image format, which means the picture is represented as pixels. The W3C describes PNG as a lossless, portable, compressed format for static and animated raster images. The format uses the .png filename extension and the image/png media type.
PNG supports grayscale, indexed-color, and truecolor images, as well as an optional alpha channel for transparency. The W3C PNG Specification (Third Edition), a Recommendation published on June 24, 2025, defines sample depths from 1 to 16 bits. An editor’s support for specific features and its handling of ancillary information can vary.

Why PNG is useful for digital painting
PNG can be a useful choice for logos, flat-colored web images, screenshots, illustrations, and artwork where transparency or lossless image data matters. GIMP’s format documentation describes PNG as lossless, with alpha support, and commonly used for flat-colored web images such as logos.
PNG stores image data; it is not necessarily the editable project file for your artwork. If you need to retain a particular project workflow, check the editor’s documentation and save the project in the format that editor supports, as well as exporting a PNG when needed.
PNG versus other formats and workflows

Choose a format and workflow according to the task. PNG’s lossless image storage does not mean every editor preserves all metadata, animation, or editing features.
How to open a PNG
For a quick look, try the image viewer available on your device or open the file in a web browser. PNG is widely implemented in browsers and image viewers, but exact steps and default applications depend on your device and installed software.

Microsoft documents a native PNG codec in Windows Imaging Component. That confirms Windows codec support, but it does not establish that every Windows app has the same interface or editing features.
How to edit a PNG
GIMP’s developer documentation lists PNG support for both import and export. When choosing any editor, check that it supports the specific features you need, such as retaining transparency or handling an animated PNG.

The W3C defines a PNG editor as software that transforms one PNG datastream into another and specifies preservation conditions for conforming editors. These include preserving information needed to reconstruct the reference image unless the user permits a lossy operation or the editor warns, and preserving unmodified ancillary information wherever possible. Do not assume every application retains every piece of information or feature.
Crop or resize a PNG
Use the crop or resize controls in your image editor, following that application’s instructions. Keep a copy of the original in case the edit removes pixels or does not produce the result you want. After exporting, reopen the image and check that it has the intended appearance and dimensions.

Adjust or annotate an image
Use the relevant controls in your editor for adjustments, text, or drawing. Check the saved result afterward. If you need to revise the work later, confirm which format or workflow retains the editing features you need rather than assuming they are preserved in the PNG.
How to preserve transparency
PNG can store alpha transparency. A transparent area is not the same as a white area: when transparency is retained, the background behind that area can show through in a viewer that supports it.

When choosing an editor, verify that it retains transparency for your operation and export. GIMP’s documentation lists PNG import and export support; feature behavior in other applications should be checked with their own documentation.
What to know about animated PNG files
The W3C PNG Third Edition includes APNG, a frame-based animation sequence. An APNG can contain an animation as well as a static image. Some software may display only the static image, so if the file is animated, confirm that your chosen application can preserve or edit its animation before exporting. GIMP’s documentation notes that displays without animation support show the static image rather than the animation.

Common PNG problems
The PNG will not open
- Try another image viewer, browser, or editor that supports PNG.
- Keep a copy before troubleshooting.
- If the file may be incomplete, ask the sender for another copy.
- If it is animated, check whether the application supports APNG; it may show only the static image.
The image appears blank or wrong
Check whether the application displays transparency against a background that makes the image hard to see. If the file is animated, the application may show only its static image. Try another viewer or editor that supports the features you need.
Transparency disappeared
Check that the editor and export workflow support alpha transparency and that the transparent areas were not filled with a solid color. Reopen the exported PNG to verify the result.
Safety when opening PNG files
Open files cautiously and prefer images from sources you trust. Be careful with online editors when images are confidential, and check the service’s privacy terms before uploading a file. A filename or displayed icon alone does not establish the underlying file type.

- Keep an untouched copy before editing.
