Meta FAIR’s Animated Drawings demo turns a suitable paper sketch into a short animation in your browser. Visit sketch.metademolab.com, upload one humanlike character, correct its detected area and joints, then choose a preset motion. It is a research demo for personal, noncommercial use—not a full animation editor or commercial production service.

The demo requires users to be at least 18 or the applicable age of majority, and is unavailable to residents of, or users accessing it from, Illinois or Texas. The result may be quick after preparation, but the whole process is not guaranteed to take seconds.

What the Animated Drawings website does

Animated Drawings is designed to make a single two-dimensional, humanlike drawing move. It detects the character, separates it from the background, estimates its joints, and maps the drawing onto a deformable skeleton or mesh. It then applies preset motion data, such as dancing, skipping, or jumping.

That makes it closer to automatic rigging and motion transfer than to traditional frame-by-frame animation or generative video. It does not create a complete scene from a text prompt, understand a character’s story, or provide the detailed control of professional animation software.

Meta says the project builds on Detectron2 and AlphaPose, with motion-capture data from the CMU Graphics Motion Capture Lab and Mixamo. Meta also released animation code and a dataset of nearly 180,000 annotated drawings in 2023. These are research-project details, not a promise of a commercial production service.

The result can appear quickly once the image is prepared, but “in seconds” is not a guaranteed end-to-end processing time. Photographing the drawing, fixing the mask, positioning joints, and trying different motions may take longer than the final preview.

How to animate a drawing

  1. Draw one character. Use a substantially complete, humanlike figure with recognizable arms, legs, and body joints.
  2. Photograph or scan it. Keep the whole character inside the frame, including the outer edges of hands and feet.
  3. Open the demo. Go to sketch.metademolab.com and choose the upload option, shown as “Upload Photo” or similar depending on the live interface.
  4. Adjust the character area. Correct the bounding box if it crops part of the figure or includes too much background.
  5. Correct the mask. Remove unwanted background areas and restore any part of the character that was cut away.
  6. Check the joints. Confirm that the markers sit inside the relevant arms, legs, and body joints. Move them if the system guessed incorrectly.
  7. Choose a motion. Select one of the available sample actions. The menu can change as the research demo is updated.
  8. Preview and share. Use the current share or download controls if offered. Meta has described downloading animated results, but the live interface and export controls may change.

Meta presents the experience as a four-step workflow beginning with uploading a drawing, followed by preparation and animation. Exact labels may differ from older walkthroughs.

Drawings that work best

The most reliable input is one full-body character on clean white paper. Keep the arms and legs visibly separated from the torso so the system can distinguish the limbs and place a movable skeleton over them.

  • Use one character per image.
  • Include the complete figure, with hands and feet inside the frame.
  • Leave visible gaps between arms, legs, and torso where possible.
  • Use white paper without ruled lines, wrinkles, tears, or distracting marks.
  • Use even lighting and avoid strong shadows or glare.
  • Keep the camera parallel to the page and far enough away to avoid cropping.
  • Do not include names, addresses, school details, faces, or other identifying information.
  • Upload only artwork you have the right to use; do not submit copyrighted characters without permission.

These recommendations affect how well the system isolates the character and infers its joints. Overlapping limbs, missing body parts, shadows, and clutter make those steps less reliable. Meta’s research describes failure cases involving incomplete figures, poor background separation, nearby multiple figures, and nonhuman subjects.

Why a result can look distorted

Cropped hands or feet

If the photograph cuts off the outer edges of limbs, the animation may appear skewed or incomplete. Reframe the drawing with more space around it. A PCWorld walkthrough reported that including the full limb edges corrected a distorted first attempt: PCWorld’s practical test.

Arms or legs overlap the body

The system may merge parts of the figure or place joints incorrectly. Redraw the character with clearer separation if possible. Manual correction can help with small errors, but cannot reliably resolve fundamentally ambiguous anatomy.

The background is included in the mask

Use clean white paper, even lighting, and a plain surface. Shadows, patterned paper, and nearby objects can be mistaken for part of the character.

There is more than one figure

The demo is intended for one character. Multiple figures can cause it to select the wrong subject, merge characters, or fail during preparation. Crop or upload them separately.

The figure is an animal, object, or abstract creature

Detection and joint placement are optimized for humanlike characters. A cartoon person with unusual proportions may work, but animals, objects, monsters without recognizable limbs, and abstract designs are much less predictable.

What it is good for—and what it is not

Animated Drawings is a good choice for a quick novelty project, a classroom demonstration of computer vision, a family activity, or a personal clip made from a hobby sketch. It requires no traditional animation training and lets you correct the system’s first interpretation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not a substitute for a production workflow. The supplied material does not indicate that it provides a full timeline, keyframe editor, audio track, lip-sync system, camera controls, layers, or professional compositing. It offers limited preset actions rather than arbitrary choreography, so the output may resemble a moving paper cutout or warped drawing rather than polished frame-by-frame animation.

Privacy, copyright, and usage restrictions

Read the current demo terms before uploading anything important. The terms state that:

  • Use is limited to personal, noncommercial purposes. Do not use the demo for client work, advertising, monetized videos, merchandise, paid courses, or other commercial projects.
  • Users must be at least 18 or the applicable age of majority where they live.
  • The demo is unavailable to residents of, or users accessing it from, Illinois or Texas.
  • Users must not submit identifiable personal information or infringing material, including protected characters they do not have permission to use.
  • Uploaded materials are described as being deleted within 90 days.
  • The terms grant Meta broad rights to use submitted materials, animations, and modifications in connection with the demo. They also say users cannot ordinarily request deletion of submitted materials or generated animations because they are not associated with the user’s name.

Do not assume that you have unrestricted commercial rights to an animation simply because you drew the original character or can save the result. The safest use is a personal experiment with original artwork and no sensitive information.

Bottom line

Use Meta’s Animated Drawings demo when you want to make one clean, humanlike paper character move with minimal effort. Prepare the drawing carefully, expect to correct the mask and joints, and treat the result as a short personal experiment—not a universal “animate anything” service or a commercial animation pipeline.
