The best digital art tablet depends on your computer, software, workspace and need for portability. First choose between a screenless pen tablet, a computer-connected pen display, and a standalone tablet computer; then compare models that fit that workflow. The products below are examples from 2024, not claims about what is newest or best in 2026.
Quick comparison
| Device type | Where you draw | Computer needed? | Best suited to | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screenless pen tablet | On the tablet surface while looking at a separate monitor | Yes | Artists who already have a computer and display | Hand and eye work in different places |
| Pen display | Directly on the built-in screen | Typically yes | Desk-based artists who prefer drawing on the image | Needs a computer connection and desk space |
| Standalone tablet computer | On the device’s screen | No, for supported tablet apps | Portable work and tablet-native apps | Available apps and stylus compatibility depend on the device |
Choose the device type first
Screenless pen tablets
A screenless pen tablet is an input device connected to a computer. You draw on its surface while watching a separate monitor, so it is not a self-contained art computer. It can suit someone who already owns a computer and display and wants a dedicated drawing surface without adding another screen.
WIRED’s 2024 guide included the Wacom Intuos M as a screenless example. Consider it as a dated model example, and check current availability and exact model details before buying. Read the WIRED 2024 drawing tablet guide.

Pen displays
A pen display lets you draw directly on its screen, but typically connects to a computer to run desktop art software. It may suit desk-based illustrators who prefer direct pen-on-image work, but it takes desk space and depends on the connected computer and required cables.

Standalone tablet computers
A standalone tablet computer runs drawing apps itself, making it useful for portable work and other tasks. Its operating system determines which art apps are available, so it may not suit a workflow that depends on a particular desktop application.

What to compare before buying
- Standalone or tethered: determine whether the device runs apps itself or needs a computer.
- Drawing surface: decide whether you want to draw on a built-in display or use a separate monitor.
- Workspace and portability: consider whether the device will stay on a desk, fit a compact workspace or travel with you.
- Software: confirm that the illustration, photo, animation or design apps you need are available for the device and operating system.
- Stylus compatibility: check the exact pen generation and supported tablet model in manufacturer documentation.
- Total setup cost: account for any computer, stand, cables, stylus or replacement nibs that are not included.
For pen displays, check the actual connection requirements rather than assuming one cable will work with every computer. For a standalone tablet, confirm that your preferred apps and stylus work with the specific model you are considering.
Does pressure sensitivity matter?
Pressure sensitivity lets supported software respond to how firmly you press, for example by varying a brush stroke. Specifications should be treated as product claims, not as a guarantee of how a pen feels in your hand.

FAQ
What is the difference between a pen tablet and a pen display?
A pen tablet has no built-in screen, so you draw on its surface while looking at a separate monitor. A pen display has a screen for direct pen-on-image drawing and typically connects to a computer.
Does a pen display work without a computer?
Pen displays typically connect to a computer to run desktop art software. Check the requirements for the exact model; a display is not necessarily a standalone computer.
Is a standalone tablet better for digital art?
It can be a better fit if portability and tablet-native apps matter most. A computer-connected device may suit you better if your work depends on desktop software. Compare your actual apps and workflow before choosing.
