You cannot use an Apple Pencil directly on a MacBook screen. To add a natural sketch or handwritten mark to Pages on a Mac, draw on a nearby iPhone or iPad and insert it with Continuity Sketch; use Pages’ Draw with Pen tool for a point-based shape, or Markup for a PDF or image.
Quick choice: natural sketch or handwriting → Continuity Sketch; diagram or custom outline → Draw with Pen; PDF or image annotation → Mac Markup or Continuity Markup.
Can you draw directly in Pages on a MacBook?
You cannot use an Apple Pencil directly on a MacBook screen. Apple Pencil is designed for compatible iPad models, not MacBook displays.

- Continuity Sketch: draw with a finger or Apple Pencil on an iPhone or iPad, then insert the sketch into the Mac document.
- Draw with Pen: construct a custom shape directly in Pages for Mac by clicking points and adding curves.
- Markup: draw on or annotate a PDF or image, either with Mac tools or through an iPhone or iPad using Continuity Markup.
These workflows are not interchangeable. A Continuity Sketch is an inserted drawing object, Draw with Pen creates a point-based custom shape, and Markup is intended primarily for PDFs and images rather than editable Pages text. Method 1: Add a handwritten sketch with an iPhone or iPad
This is the best Apple-supported method for natural handwriting, a quick sketch, a signature-like mark, or a hand-drawn illustration in a Pages document on your MacBook.
Requirements
- A compatible Mac and iPhone or iPad
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on both devices
- The same Apple Account signed in on both devices
- Two-factor authentication enabled for that Apple Account
- The devices nearby; Apple specifies approximately 30 feet (10 meters)
- An unlocked iPhone or iPad available to receive the request
Apple’s general Continuity documentation describes Continuity Sketch and Continuity Markup as requiring macOS Catalina 10.15 or later and iOS or iPadOS 13 or later, but newer device-specific requirements may apply. Check Apple’s current Continuity requirements if the option is missing; those minimum versions do not guarantee that every device combination is supported.
Steps
- Open the Pages document on your MacBook.
- Click in the document near where you want the sketch inserted.
- Open the relevant command using one of these paths, depending on your Pages version and document context:
- Choose File or Insert, then Insert from iPhone or iPad > Add Sketch, where available; or
- Control-click in the document and choose Add Sketch.
- Wait for the sketch interface to open on the nearby iPhone or iPad.
- Draw with an Apple Pencil on a compatible iPad, or with your finger on an iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Done on the mobile device.
- Confirm that the sketch appears in Pages on the MacBook.
- Select the inserted drawing to move, resize, or format it as an object.
The iPhone or iPad is the drawing surface; Pages on the Mac receives the completed sketch. See Apple’s guide to inserting sketches from an iPhone or iPad.
Positioning the sketch
Pages inserts the sketch near the cursor or contextual insertion point. Click in the document before choosing Add Sketch. After insertion, select the drawing and drag it to a new position or use its handles to resize it. To place a handwritten mark over existing content, treat the sketch as an object that you position over or beside that content—not as a text-linked annotation.

Method 2: Draw a custom shape directly in Pages for Mac
Use this method for an irregular diagram, arrow, outline, polygon, or simple illustration. It is not a freehand brush or unrestricted handwriting tool: Pages builds the shape from points and line segments.
- Open Pages and create or open a document.
- Click the Shape button in the toolbar.
- Choose Draw with Pen.
- Click on the page to create the first point.
- Move the pointer and click again to add more points.
- Continue clicking to build the outline.
- For a curved segment, click and drag, then click again to finish the segment.
- To remove the most recently created segment or point, select the relevant point and press Delete.
- Finish the shape by clicking the first point to close it with a solid line, or press Escape to leave it open.
- To refine the object, select it and choose Format > Shapes and Lines > Make Editable.
- Adjust the points or contours as needed.
Apple’s Draw a shape in Pages on Mac guide documents this point-and-curve workflow. It is useful for clean diagrams, but a nearby iPhone or iPad will produce a more natural result for handwriting.

Method 3: Annotate a PDF or image with Markup
If the item you want to draw on is a PDF page or image, Markup is usually the right tool rather than Pages’ drawing features.
- Locate the PDF or image in Finder.
- Select it and press the Space bar to open Quick Look, or Control-click it and choose Quick Actions > Markup.
- Click the Markup button.
- Choose from the available drawing, sketch, shape, text, signature, or highlighting tools.
- For Continuity Markup, click the annotation or Continuity Markup button and select the nearby iPhone or iPad.
- Draw on the mobile device with a finger or Apple Pencil.
- Tap Done on the iPhone or iPad.
- Click Done on the Mac to save the changes.
Available tools can vary by file type. Apple’s Mac Markup guide covers annotation of PDFs and images and the Continuity Markup workflow.
Save a copy first: Apple warns that changes made in a Quick Look or Quick Actions window cannot be undone after that window is closed. Preserve the original before making substantial annotations.

Troubleshooting
“Add Sketch” does not appear
Check the following in order:
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices.
- Confirm that both devices use the same Apple Account.
- Move the devices closer together.
- Unlock the iPhone or iPad.
- Make sure the mobile device is not occupied by another Continuity request.
- Close and reopen the Pages document.
- Quit and restart Pages, then retry the Control-click or Insert from iPhone or iPad path.
- Check Apple’s current compatibility requirements if the option is still absent.
The feature can also be unavailable because of the Pages version, the document context, or an unsupported hardware and operating-system combination.
The sketch appears in the wrong place
Before starting Continuity Sketch, click at the intended insertion point. Once inserted, select the drawing and reposition or resize it as an object.
My Apple Pencil is not working with the MacBook
This is expected: an Apple Pencil cannot be paired with macOS to turn a MacBook into a Pages drawing canvas. Use the Pencil with a compatible iPad, then insert the result with Continuity Sketch, or use Pages’ Draw with Pen tool on the Mac.
I want to write directly over existing Pages text
For a handwritten mark, create it with Continuity Sketch and place the resulting object over or beside the text. For a PDF or image, use Markup. For annotations that remain associated with Pages text or objects as the document changes, use Pages on iPad or iPhone; a sketch inserted on the Mac is not the same kind of text-linked annotation.
Can I edit the drawing later?
From the Mac’s perspective, a Continuity Sketch is an inserted drawing object. You can move, resize, and format it, but do not assume that every brush stroke can be independently edited in Pages for Mac. For substantial revisions, edit the original on the iPad or in a dedicated graphics application and insert the updated artwork.

What if you do not have an iPad?
You may not need to buy one:
- Use an existing compatible iPhone: Continuity Sketch accepts finger drawings, making it suitable for occasional notes, signatures, and simple sketches.
- Use Draw with Pen: For arrows, outlines, and basic diagrams, Pages’ built-in custom-shape tool may be enough.
- Use a Mac-compatible drawing tablet or pen display: A tablet from a vendor such as Wacom can provide Mac drawing input, but generally involves a separate drawing application and an export/import step rather than an Apple Pencil layer inside Pages. Do not assume compatibility with Pages itself.
- Use Mac drawing software: Create artwork in a Mac-compatible graphics application, export it as an image, and insert it into Pages. This is more suitable for repeated or detailed illustration than for one quick arrow.
An iPad plus a compatible Apple Pencil is a practical upgrade for frequent handwriting, classroom materials, diagrams, or illustration. Check Apple’s current iPad and Apple Pencil compatibility information because Pencil support varies by iPad model. For occasional sketches, an iPhone you already own is often the simpler option.

Can I use Apple Pencil directly with a MacBook?
No. Apple Pencil works with compatible iPad models, not directly with a MacBook. You can use it on an iPad to make a sketch and insert that sketch into Pages on your Mac with Continuity Sketch.
Can I draw with a trackpad in Pages?
Pages for Mac’s documented Draw with Pen tool creates a custom shape by placing points and curves. It is not an unrestricted freehand brush or handwriting canvas. For natural drawing, use Continuity Sketch with an iPhone or iPad.
How do I insert a sketch from an iPad into Pages?

Can I annotate text in Pages?
For annotations associated with Pages text or objects as the document changes, use Pages’ annotation tools on iPad or iPhone. On a Mac, you can insert a Continuity Sketch as an object and position it over or beside the text, but it is not the same text-linked annotation.
Why is Add Sketch missing?
Check that both devices are compatible, nearby, signed in to the same Apple Account, and have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled. Unlock the iPhone or iPad, close and reopen the document, then check Apple’s current Continuity requirements if the option remains unavailable.
Can I edit a drawing after inserting it?
You can move, resize, and format the inserted object in Pages for Mac. For substantial changes to the original artwork, revise it on the iPad or in a graphics app and insert the updated result.
Can I draw on a PDF page inside Pages?
For a PDF annotation, use Mac Markup or Continuity Markup. These tools are intended for PDFs and images; they are not a way to draw directly on editable Pages text.
Do I need an iPad to draw in Pages?
