Krita’s official feature set includes more than 100 included brushes, more than nine brush engines, customizable workspaces, three stabilization approaches, layers and groups, vector and text tools, color management, GPU canvas acceleration, Python scripting, plugins, and PSD loading and saving. That makes Krita a particularly strong choice for digital painting, concept art, illustration, texture work, and artists who want deep brush customization without paying monthly. PSD support is useful for collaboration, although imported files may not preserve every adjustment layer, live filter, text layer, vector object, mask, effect, smart object, or proprietary brush exactly.
The trade-off is its interface. Krita feels like a full desktop graphics application rather than Procreate’s minimalist tablet interface. Expect to configure dockers, shortcuts, workspaces, and brush presets. It can also be excessive for someone who only wants quick sketches, and performance will vary with canvas size, brush engine, layer count, and hardware.
Choose Krita if: you want the strongest genuinely free option and are willing to spend time learning a capable desktop workflow.

Clip Studio Paint is the strongest choice for comic artists, manga creators, webtoon producers, and illustrators who need specialized production tools rather than only a painting canvas.
Its Windows workflow includes comic panel and frame tools, speech balloons, screentones, inking features, extensive brush and asset resources, and animation tools such as onion skinning and light-table functions. Clip Studio Paint can also be an excellent paid all-purpose alternative for character artists and line-art specialists. Its stabilization, pen tools, customizable brushes, and asset ecosystem make it especially comfortable when clean, controlled strokes matter.
Pricing and licensing require care. Availability of subscription plans, perpetual licenses, upgrade terms, and prices can vary by region and promotion. 3. Adobe Fresco: best free touch-first alternative
Adobe Fresco is the best polished, free option for a compatible Windows touchscreen or pen-enabled convertible. Its interface is more approachable than many full desktop suites, and it combines raster brushes, vector brushes, and live brushes in one application.
Adobe lists watercolor- and oil-like live brushes, thousands of brushes, unlimited layers, frame-by-frame animation, and simple motion presets. Adobe also provides a Windows download, but compatibility depends on the specific device. A conventional Windows desktop with a screenless tablet may not deliver the same direct-on-canvas experience as a Surface-style device.
Fresco is marketed as free, but it belongs to Adobe’s wider account and service ecosystem. That is not the same as requiring a paid Creative Cloud plan simply to use the app, but readers should consider account, cloud, and ecosystem dependencies when comparing it with a local-first application such as Krita. Live brushes can also be more demanding than ordinary raster brushes.

Sketchbook should not be presented as the strongest tool for complex compositing, advanced animation, multi-page comics, or demanding print production. The official overview confirms the desktop product but does not provide a current US price in the referenced material, so check the current desktop edition and Microsoft Store listing before buying. Feature availability can also vary by edition.
Choose Sketchbook Pro if: you value a quiet interface and fast sketching more than a complete painting and production suite.
5. Rebelle 8: best for realistic watercolor and oils
Rebelle 8 is a specialist painting application for artists who want traditional-media behavior. Escape Motions positions it as a hyper-realistic painting tool; in practical terms, its appeal is the focus on watercolor, oils, acrylics, inks, pastels, pencils, markers, airbrushes, paper surfaces, canvas textures, pigment color mixing, oil thickness, watercolor diffusion, and drips.
Rebelle supports Windows and macOS and can record time-lapse footage. It works with PNG, JPG, TIFF, BMP, WEBP, and native REB files. Advanced PSD import and export and Photoshop plugin features are available in Rebelle Pro, so confirm the edition before planning a layered Photoshop workflow.
Escape Motions lists Windows 10 64-bit, at least 4 GB of RAM, 1.5 GB of disk space, and a graphics card with 1 GB of RAM among its requirements. The recommended configuration rises to 16 GB of RAM and a stronger GPU, particularly for 4K work. Large wet-media canvases can expose hardware limitations sooner than simple sketching. Rebelle is not the best general replacement for comic layout, vector design, or photo editing. It offers a lifetime license with one year of free updates, but the captured official page did not provide a numeric price; check the vendor’s current shop before purchase.
Choose Rebelle 8 if: watercolor, oil, or acrylic simulation is more important than broad production features.

Adobe Photoshop belongs on this list because many Procreate users are actually looking for a Windows-standard application for client work, compositing, photo editing, or Adobe-based team handoffs.

Photoshop provides sophisticated layers, masks, selections, color adjustments, compositing, export controls, and broad PSD-based collaboration. It is widely used in professional Adobe-centered workflows and is a sensible choice when illustration is only one part of the job.
It is not the closest drawing experience to Procreate. Photoshop’s broad editing toolkit can make pure sketching feel less immediate, and its subscription model is a significant disadvantage for hobbyists. Adobe’s US individual page showed US$22.99 per month for an annual plan billed monthly at the time represented in the dossier, but prices, plans, trials, and regional terms can change. Check the current official page before subscribing.
Core drawing tools should also be distinguished from optional online services, cloud features, generative tools, and account-related policies. Photoshop’s strength is interoperability and production breadth, not minimalist painting.
Choose Photoshop if: you need professional editing, compositing, Adobe integration, and client-friendly file handoff alongside drawing.

What you need besides the app
A Windows PC is not automatically a drawing device. A conventional laptop or desktop may need a Wacom, Huion, XP-Pen, or similar screenless tablet or pen display, along with its drivers. A pen-enabled convertible can provide direct-on-screen drawing, but pen quality, calibration, tilt behavior, display parallax, and driver stability vary considerably.
Before purchasing, check whether your hardware supports the stylus features you need: pressure sensitivity, tilt, palm rejection, Windows Ink, or a manufacturer-specific tablet protocol. A pressure-sensitive app cannot compensate for a missing or incorrectly configured driver.
Test the exact setup with a free version or trial. If pressure or tilt fails, check the tablet driver, Windows Ink setting, application-specific tablet mode, stylus battery or Bluetooth connection, and graphics drivers. Conflicting Wacom and Windows Ink settings can also cause problems.

File compatibility and backups
PSD support is helpful but imperfect. Moving a file between applications can alter adjustment layers, live filters, vector shapes, text, layer effects, masks, blend modes, smart objects, proprietary brushes, or animation timelines. Before changing a professional workflow, open a representative layered file in the target application and inspect the result.
Keep a local native-format master even if an app offers cloud synchronization. Export periodic PSD, TIFF, PNG, or other interchange copies, use date-stamped filenames or version history, and keep backups in a second physical or cloud location. Cloud sync helps move projects between devices; it is not, by itself, a complete backup strategy.
Bottom line
For most Windows artists, Krita is the best place to start: it is free, powerful, and unusually complete. Choose Clip Studio Paint for comics, Fresco for a compatible touch-first Windows device, Sketchbook for uncomplicated sketching, Rebelle for traditional-media simulation, and Photoshop for Adobe-centered professional production. The right alternative is determined less by the app that looks most like Procreate than by the way you actually draw.
