ART is a separate, free and open-source RAW photo processor derived from RawTherapee. It keeps much of RawTherapee’s processing foundation while aiming for a more approachable interface. It is not a RawTherapee plug-in, beginner mode, or official edition—and it is not automatically a full replacement for Lightroom.

What is ART?

ART is a standalone RAW-development application whose project branding describes it as “ART — a raw toolbox.” The name is commonly interpreted as “Another RawTherapee,” but the project’s own current branding should take priority over that expansion.

ART is intended for photographers who want advanced, local RAW processing without a subscription, but who find RawTherapee’s interface unusually dense. Its goal is to simplify the route to a strong result—not to remove the technical nature of RAW development.

Is ART really a RawTherapee fork?

Yes. ART began from the RawTherapee codebase and remains a RawTherapee-derived application. However, it is now a separate project with its own repository, development activity, documentation, releases, controls, defaults, and project identity.

The most accurate description is:

ART is a separate RawTherapee-derived RAW processor that simplifies parts of the interface and adds or changes functionality.

It is not simply “RawTherapee with a better interface.” The projects can diverge in available tools, menu locations, terminology, processing behavior, camera support, and documentation. Updates to RawTherapee do not automatically become updates to ART, and installing ART does not install RawTherapee.

What problem is ART trying to solve?

RawTherapee is known for exposing a very large number of controls across demosaicing, tone, color, sharpening, noise reduction, and other stages of RAW processing. That depth is valuable, but it can make the application difficult to approach.

ART trades some of RawTherapee’s customization and control for a more streamlined workflow. “Simpler” does not mean “basic,” however. You still need to understand exposure, white balance, histograms, color management, export settings, and the difference between a RAW file and a finished image.

The practical distinction is between simpler interaction and simpler output. ART tries to make advanced development easier to navigate; it does not turn RAW editing into a one-click consumer editor.

What can you do in ART?

ART is primarily a RAW developer rather than a general-purpose painting or pixel-editing application. Depending on the current version and supported file, a typical workflow can include:

  • Cropping and rotating images.
  • Applying supported lens and optical corrections.
  • Processing multiple images in batches.
  • Saving development instructions separately from the original RAW.
  • Exporting developed images to formats such as JPEG or TIFF.
  • Sending an exported image to another application for layers, retouching, compositing, or other pixel-level work.

Exact tools and feature behavior can change between releases. Do not assume that every RawTherapee feature—or every feature described in a RawTherapee tutorial—exists in ART in the same form.

ART versus RawTherapee

Area ART RawTherapee
Relationship Separate RawTherapee-derived project Original RawTherapee project
Interface goal More approachable and streamlined Maximum control and configurability
Processing approach Advanced, with some simplification and project-specific changes Extremely granular control over the RAW pipeline
Learning curve Potentially easier to enter, but still technical Steeper for many newcomers
Profiles Use ART-specific profiles and presets where possible Uses its own profiles and controls
Best fit Photographers wanting RawTherapee-style development with a gentler workflow Photographers wanting the broadest access to processing parameters
Cost Free and open source; verify the current repository license Free software licensed under GPLv3

ART may feel easier, but ease is subjective. Neither application should be assumed to produce identical results from identical settings. A RawTherapee processing profile may not reproduce correctly in ART, and vice versa. Keep the original profile and source RAW until the comparison is complete.

Is ART non-destructive?

In a normal RAW-development workflow, the original RAW file is not altered. Adjustments are stored separately in the application’s processing workflow, while JPEG or TIFF exports are derivative files.

That does not mean the workflow is risk-free. If ART uses sidecar or project data for an image, moving or renaming the RAW without its associated adjustment data can make the edit appear to disappear. Back up the RAW files together with ART’s sidecars or project files, presets, custom profiles, and exported masters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because sidecar formats and storage behavior can change, check the current ART documentation before designing an archive or migrating a large library. Do not assume that ART’s format is identical to RawTherapee’s.

Can ART replace Lightroom?

ART can replace the RAW-development part of Lightroom for some photographers, but it is not automatically a complete Lightroom replacement.

ART is a good candidate if your main requirements are local RAW conversion, manual adjustments, batch processing, and export to JPEG or TIFF. It is especially attractive if you want free, open-source software and do not need a subscription-based ecosystem.

Can ART replace Photoshop, Affinity Photo, or GIMP?

No—not as a general pixel editor. ART is best treated as the RAW-development stage of a broader workflow.

  1. Develop the RAW in ART.
  2. Export a high-quality, preferably 16-bit TIFF when substantial editing is needed.
  3. Open the TIFF in a pixel editor.
  4. Perform layers, retouching, compositing, text, or precise selections there.
  5. Export the final delivery version.

GIMP can provide free, open-source raster editing. Affinity Photo is another option for layers and retouching. Neither should be confused with a complete catalog-first RAW workflow.

How to install ART safely

ART’s current stable version, package names, supported operating systems, and CPU architectures should be checked on the official ART releases page immediately before installation. Do not use RawTherapee’s version number or installer instructions as a substitute.

  1. Open the official ART repository, project website, or releases page.
  2. Choose a marked stable release unless you intentionally want to test development software.
  3. Select the package for your operating system and CPU architecture.
  4. Download only from the official release page or a trusted distribution package.
  5. Back up representative RAW files before experimenting.
  6. Install or unpack ART according to the current platform instructions.
  7. Open files from every camera body you plan to use.
  8. Export at least one test JPEG and one TIFF.
  9. Record the ART version used for important projects and retain the installer when long-term reproducibility matters.

Do not import an entire archive until a small test set has opened, edited, and exported correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test ART before switching

A useful migration test should include more than an ordinary daylight photograph. Compare the same files in your current application and ART:

  1. A daylight image with ordinary exposure.
  2. A high-ISO image containing shadow noise.
  3. A high-dynamic-range scene with bright highlights and deep shadows.
  4. A mixed-light image requiring careful white balance.
  5. An image with distortion or chromatic aberration.
  6. An image requiring local adjustments or masking.

Compare highlight recovery, color, white balance, fine detail, noise, lens corrections, export appearance, and the time required to reach a satisfactory result. This is more useful than assuming that a fork must behave identically to its parent project.

Camera and RAW-file compatibility

Do not interpret “RAW processor” as universal camera support. Compatibility depends on the camera model, RAW format, ART version, decoding libraries, compression method, and special capture modes.

New or unusual files may open with incomplete metadata, incorrect white balance, missing camera profiles, artifacts, or no image at all. Test lossless-compressed files, linear DNGs, pixel-shift or multi-shot files, and other modes you actually use—not just ordinary RAW captures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If ART cannot open a file:

  1. Confirm that the file is not corrupted.
  2. Try another file from the same camera.
  3. Check the camera model and ART version.
  4. Try the latest stable ART build.
  5. Use a development build only as a diagnostic, not as an automatic production replacement.
  6. Test the file in the camera manufacturer’s software or another RAW developer.
  7. Keep the original file and report a reproducible sample to the project when appropriate.

RawTherapee’s own decoder changes also demonstrate why version matters. Its recent documentation discusses a transition involving LibRaw and an enhanced dcraw path, but that information should not be used to infer ART’s current decoder stack. See the RawTherapee documentation for RawTherapee-specific details.

Common problems and fixes

An edit appears to be missing

The tool may have been renamed, reorganized, simplified, or implemented differently. The profile may reference an unavailable control, or ART may not have found the expected sidecar. Check the file’s processing history, confirm the sidecar location, and save a new ART-specific profile rather than overwriting the only copy of the original.

The export looks different from the preview

Check the export color profile, display color management, JPEG settings, bit depth, resizing and sharpening options, and whether the external viewer is color-managed. Also confirm that the preview had finished rendering and that export used the intended processing profile.

A RawTherapee profile does not reproduce in ART

Treat this as a possible interoperability limitation, not automatically as a bug. Compare the controls manually, create an ART-specific preset, and preserve the original RawTherapee profile and RAW file until the result is verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ART still feels difficult

That is normal. ART reduces some interface complexity but remains a specialized RAW processor. A comfortable workflow still requires basic knowledge of exposure, white balance, color management, sidecars, and export.

Color management and archival precautions

For consistent results, calibrate the monitor when possible, understand the working-space and export-profile settings, and use sRGB for general web delivery unless you have a reason to use another profile. Preserve 16-bit TIFF files when handing images to a pixel editor and confirm that the receiving application honors the embedded profile.

For important work, back up:

  • Original RAW files.
  • ART sidecars or project files.
  • Presets and custom profiles.
  • LUTs or scripts used in the workflow.
  • Metadata, ratings, and labels.
  • Exported high-quality masters.
  • The ART version used for the project.

ART alternatives

RawTherapee

Choose RawTherapee if maximum control over the RAW pipeline matters more than a gentle interface. It follows its own release path; the repository’s releases page should be used for current version information.

darktable

darktable is another free, open-source RAW workflow application. It may be a better fit if database-style organization, ratings, tags, and collections are central to your workflow, though its own interface and terminology can also be complex.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Commercial applications

Lightroom is stronger when cataloging, cloud sync, mobile editing, and Photoshop integration matter. Capture One is aimed at demanding professional workflows, including studio-oriented work. DxO PhotoLab is attractive when camera-and-lens profiles and denoising are priorities. Current pricing, platform support, and feature availability change, so check each vendor’s official site rather than relying on old price tables.

Who should use ART?

  • Choose ART if you want free local RAW development and find RawTherapee’s interface too dense.
  • Choose RawTherapee if you want the broadest access to technical processing controls.
  • Choose darktable if catalog-style organization is as important as development.
  • Choose commercial software if immediate support for new cameras, cloud services, mobile workflows, AI tools, or vendor support saves enough time to justify the cost.

Verdict

ART is a genuine RawTherapee-derived application, not a renamed theme or a beginner edition. Its strongest case is for photographers who want advanced, non-destructive RAW development in free and open-source software but prefer a less intimidating workflow than RawTherapee provides.

It can replace Lightroom’s development function for many local, file-based workflows. It should not automatically be treated as a replacement for Lightroom’s catalog and cloud ecosystem, or for Photoshop-style pixel editing. Test your own cameras, files, sidecars, and exports before moving a working archive.
