Pixelmator Pro is no longer merely coming to iPad. Apple released Pixelmator Pro for iPad on January 28, 2026, as part of Apple Creator Studio. It requires iPadOS 26 or later and an iPad with an Apple M1 chip or newer, A16, or A17 Pro. On iPad, access requires an Apple Creator Studio subscription; the separate $49.99 one-time purchase applies to the Mac version.
What changed?
Apple announced Pixelmator Pro for iPad on January 13, 2026, then released it as version 4.0 on January 28. It is a touch-optimized edition of Apple’s professional image editor, rather than an update to the older Pixelmator app for iPhone and iPad.
That distinction matters because Apple now has three related products:

- WHY APPLE PENCIL - With pixel-perfect precision, tilt sensitivity, and low latency, Apple Pencil (USB-C) makes note-taking, signing documents, and drawing easy at an affordable price. It pairs and charges via USB-C and can magnetically attach to your iPad.
- COMPATIBILITY - Apple Pencil (USB-C) works with iPad Pro 13-inch (M4 and M5); iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th generation); iPad Pro 11-inch (M4 and M5); iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation); iPad Air 13-inch (M2, M3, M4); iPad Air 11-inch (M2 and M3); iPad Air (4th and 5th generation); iPad (A16), iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad mini (6th generation); and iPad (10th generation).
- EASY AND NATURAL - Write, sketch, and draw with pixel-perfect precision. Apple Pencil (USB-C) does it all with low latency and tilt sensitivity. Apple Pencil pairs and charges via USB-C and features a flat edge that attaches magnetically.
- TRANSFORMS IPAD INTO A CANVAS - Draw, sketch, color, take notes, and mark up documents. Use built-in apps like Notes and Freeform, or choose from over a million more apps available on the App Store. And for pros, use Apple Pencil hover on iPad Pro and iPad Air to preview your mark before you make it.
- WHAT'S IN THE BOX - Apple Pencil (USB-C)
- Pixelmator Classic for iOS: the older, simpler iPhone and iPad app. Apple says it remains functional but is no longer being updated.
- Pixelmator Pro for Mac: the desktop editor, available through Apple Creator Studio or as a $49.99 one-time Mac purchase in the United States.
- Pixelmator Pro for iPad: the new iPad app, included with Apple Creator Studio.
If you search the App Store for “Pixelmator” and find the older app, do not assume it contains the new Pro feature set.
Apple’s launch announcement and release notes describe the iPad edition as bringing major Mac tools to a workspace designed around touch, Apple Pencil, and complex multilayer compositions.
What can Pixelmator Pro for iPad do?
The app is aimed at more than quick photo corrections. It combines layer-based compositing, design, illustration, and image editing in one iPad workspace.
- Work with image, shape, text, and video layers.
- Organize compositions in a touch-optimized Layers sidebar.
- Use smart selections, bitmap masks, and vector masks.
- Edit nondestructively so adjustments and masks can be changed later.
- Paint with pressure-sensitive brushes.
- Import photos directly from the iPad camera as layers.
- Upscale images with Super Resolution.
- Reduce compression artifacts with Deband.
- Use Auto Crop for composition suggestions.
- Build and edit complex multilayer compositions.
These tools make Pixelmator Pro more relevant to illustrators, designers, photographers, and people creating thumbnails, presentation graphics, social assets, or composites—not just users who want to crop and adjust photographs.
Apple Pencil support goes beyond basic stylus input
Apple Pencil is not required for every editing task, but it changes how the iPad version works for painting, masking, selections, and precision retouching.
Rank #2
- Compatibility: The stylus pencil only works with iPads from 2018 onwards, including iPad Air 11 inch (2026-2024, M4/M3/M2), iPad Air 13 inch (2026-2024, M4/M3/M2), iPad Pro 11 inch (2025-2024, M5/M4), iPad Pro 13 inch (2025-2024, M5/M4), iPad A16/11th (2025), iPad 10th Gen (2022), iPad Pro 11 inch (2022-2018), iPad Pro 12.9 inch (2022-2018), iPad Air 5th/4th/3rd, iPad Mini A17 Pro/7th/6th/5th, and iPad 9th/8th/7th/6th. Please verify your model in [Settings > General > About] before purchasing.
- Tilt Sensitivity: The iPad Stylus features tilt sensitivity, allowing you to create varying line thicknesses and shadows by adjusting the angle of your pencil for apple ipad 10th generation.
- Palm Rejection: You can comfortably rest your hand on the screen without gloves while using the stylus pen for ipad.
- Magnetic Adsorption: The iPad pencil 10th generation magnetically attaches to iPads released from 2018~2026 just like 2nd generation for Apple Pencil. Note: Does not support magnetic charging.
- Type-C Fast Charging: Fully charges the ipad pencil in just 15 minutes for up to 9 hours of use. Note: Sleeps after 5 minutes of inactivity to save power.
- Pressure sensitivity: brush size, opacity, or stroke response can vary with pressure, depending on the selected brush.
- Hover: on compatible iPad and Pencil hardware, you can preview or position the Pencil before touching the display.
- Squeeze: supported Apple Pencil models can provide a shortcut action.
- Double-tap: compatible models can switch tools or perform the configured Pencil shortcut.
- Palm rejection: you can rest your hand on the display while drawing.
Not every Apple Pencil generation supports every gesture. Hover, squeeze, and double-tap depend on the specific Pencil and iPad combination. A third-party stylus will not provide the same Apple Pencil features, so check compatibility before buying a Pencil for an existing iPad.
Apple’s Pencil compatibility notes identify model-specific differences.
Which iPads support Pixelmator Pro?
Apple’s current Pixelmator Pro requirements are:
- Operating system: iPadOS 26 or later.
- Processor: Apple M1 or later, A16, or A17 Pro.
That includes qualifying:
- iPad Pro models with M1 or newer.
- iPad Air models with M1 or newer.
- The iPad with A16.
- The iPad mini with A17 Pro.
Older A-series iPads below A16 are not listed as compatible, including the sixth-generation iPad mini. Chip eligibility is not the same as identical performance: screen size, memory, storage, and the complexity of a project can affect the experience with large files and many layers.
For the current requirements, check Apple’s Pixelmator Pro product page rather than relying only on an iPad’s age or appearance.
Does Pixelmator Pro work with a Mac?
Yes. Apple documents iCloud-based round-tripping between Pixelmator Pro for iPad and Mac.

- Start or open a project on iPad.
- Save it through iCloud.
- Open the project on your Mac.
- Continue editing with the Mac interface.
- Return to iPad when portability or Apple Pencil input is more useful.
This is useful for artists who sketch or mask on iPad, then do detailed production work at a desk, or for Mac users who need to make changes while traveling. It does not mean that every interaction, shortcut, plug-in, file location, or feature is identical on both platforms. The iPad version is designed around touch and its own screen and input model.
To reduce the risk of losing work, use the same Apple Account on both devices, enable iCloud Drive, wait for the project to finish syncing, and keep a duplicate or exported copy of important work. Large projects may need sufficient local and iCloud storage.
Pricing and licensing
The main licensing correction is simple: buying Pixelmator Pro for Mac does not automatically mean you own Pixelmator Pro for iPad. Apple currently lists iPad access as part of Apple Creator Studio and identifies the one-time purchase specifically for Mac.
| What you want | How Apple lists it |
|---|---|
| Pixelmator Pro on iPad | Apple Creator Studio subscription required |
| Pixelmator Pro on Mac | Apple Creator Studio or a $49.99 one-time Mac purchase in the U.S. |
| Pixelmator Pro plus Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro | Apple Creator Studio may provide better bundle value |
| Eligible student or educator access | $2.99 monthly or $29.99 annually in the U.S. |
U.S. Apple Creator Studio pricing is currently $12.99 per month or $129 per year. New subscribers receive a 30-day trial, and Family Sharing supports up to six family members. Prices and availability can vary by country.
The real comparison is not simply “subscription versus one-time purchase.” On iPad, the subscription bundles several professional applications. It is most compelling when you will also use Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Motion, Compressor, MainStage, or the premium features in Apple’s productivity apps. It is harder to justify if Pixelmator Pro is the only feature you want and you prefer to avoid recurring payments.

What else is included with Apple Creator Studio?
Apple Creator Studio includes:
- Final Cut Pro for Mac and iPad.
- Logic Pro for Mac and iPad.
- Pixelmator Pro for Mac and iPad.
- Motion, Compressor, and MainStage for Mac.
- Premium content and intelligent features in Keynote, Pages, and Numbers.
- Additional Freeform features depending on availability and release status.
Later 2026 updates expanded the connection between Pixelmator Pro and the rest of the bundle. Apple added the ability to send a Final Cut Pro frame to Pixelmator Pro, edit images from within Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, and use generated vector shapes, advanced image generation, and Content Hub assets such as premium photos, graphics, shapes, and illustrations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThese additions should not be treated as universally available on every iPad. Some AI features require an Apple Intelligence-capable device, a compatible operating-system version, an Apple Account and iCloud setup, or an internet connection. Availability can also vary by language, region, usage limits, and third-party model restrictions. Apple describes these requirements in its June 2026 Creator Studio update.
Pixelmator Pro versus Photomator
Photomator has not been discontinued or replaced. Apple continues to offer it as a separate App Store purchase.
Photomator is the more natural fit for focused photo organization and editing. Pixelmator Pro is broader: it is designed for layers, masks, typography, vector elements, painting, illustration, and compositing. A photographer who mainly adjusts exposure, color, and crops may not need Pixelmator Pro’s more extensive design workspace.
Who should use Pixelmator Pro on iPad?
It is a strong fit if you:
- Already own a compatible iPad and use Apple Pencil.
- Need layers, masks, typography, vector elements, or compositing.
- Move projects between a Mac and iPad.
- Already subscribe to Apple Creator Studio.
- Use Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Keynote, Pages, or Numbers as part of the same workflow.
Consider another option if you:
- Own an iPad below Apple’s A16, A17 Pro, or M1 requirement.
- Want a standalone, one-time iPad purchase.
- Only need basic photo adjustments.
- Do not use the other Creator Studio applications.
- Depend on desktop-only plug-ins, automation, or specialized color-management workflows that have not been verified for the iPad edition.
Alternatives by workflow
| App | Best suited to | Key difference |
|---|---|---|
| Photomator | Photo organization and focused editing | Simpler photo workflow rather than Pixelmator Pro’s broader design and compositing tools |
| Procreate | Digital painting and illustration | iPad-first brush and art workflow rather than a direct Mac-style photo and design editor |
| Photoshop for iPad | Adobe Creative Cloud users | Better fit for Photoshop-centered teams and Adobe file workflows |
| Affinity Photo | Professional image editing outside Adobe | Licensing and platform support should be checked against your exact needs before purchase |
Common problems and checks
The app does not appear in the App Store
- Confirm the iPad has A16, A17 Pro, or M1-or-newer hardware.
- Update to iPadOS 26 or later.
- Check your Apple Account’s storefront and whether Apple Creator Studio is available in your region.
- Make sure you are not searching for the older Pixelmator Classic app.
- Look for Pixelmator Pro through the Apple Creator Studio offering rather than assuming the legacy app is the same product.
Your Mac purchase does not unlock the iPad app
This is expected under Apple’s current product description. The $49.99 one-time purchase is listed for Mac, while iPad access is included with Apple Creator Studio.

Apple Pencil features are missing
Check whether your Pencil model supports the gesture you want, whether the iPad supports hover, and whether the shortcut is configured differently in iPadOS. Also confirm that you are using an Apple Pencil rather than a third-party stylus and that the selected tool supports pressure input.
AI tools are unavailable
Check Apple Intelligence hardware support, iPadOS version, Apple Account and iCloud requirements, internet access, and regional or language restrictions. Usage limits and staged availability may also apply.
An iCloud project is not visible on the other device
Use the same Apple Account, enable iCloud Drive, confirm that syncing has completed, check available iCloud and local storage, and keep a backup copy of important projects. Apple confirms iCloud round-tripping, but not every possible sync failure condition.
The verdict
Pixelmator Pro for iPad is a real, released app—not an announced product waiting for launch. It brings serious layer-based editing, painting, masking, and design tools to compatible iPads, with Apple Pencil features and iCloud handoff to Mac.
