To create or convert an image to PNG, open it in an image editor or converter, choose Save As, Export, or Export As, select PNG, and save the new file with a .png extension. Then reopen it and check its format, dimensions, colors, and transparency.

Do not simply rename photo.jpg to photo.png. Renaming changes the label, not the file’s underlying format.

What is a PNG file?

PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. It is a raster image format that uses lossless compression, meaning ordinary PNG compression does not discard pixel data. PNG supports RGB and grayscale images, indexed-color PNG-8 files, and transparency through an alpha channel.

PNG is especially useful for logos, screenshots, interface graphics, illustrations, line art, text, and images that need a transparent background. It is not a vector format: enlarging a small PNG can make it blurry or pixelated. Exporting to PNG also normally flattens the visible result; it does not preserve editable Photoshop or GIMP layers, masks, or vector objects.

Pixillion Image Converter Software for Mac- Convert Photo and Image File Formats [Download]
  • Convert images to jpeg, gif, png, bmp, tiff and more
  • Rotate, resize and compress digital photos
  • Easily add captions or watermarks to your images

Ordinary PNG files are single-frame images. Animated PNG, or APNG, is a separate use of the format and requires explicit support from the application or destination.

PNG is not automatically the best format for every image. Photographs are often much smaller as JPEG, WebP, or AVIF. Adobe’s image-format reference describes JPEG as commonly used for photographs and PNG as a lossless format that supports transparency.

When should you use PNG?

PNG is usually a good choice for Consider another format for
Logos, icons, screenshots, UI elements, text, diagrams, and line art Large photographs where file size matters most
Graphics that need a transparent background Photo-heavy websites that support WebP or AVIF
Images that will be edited repeatedly without further lossy compression Camera or delivery workflows optimized for JPEG

PNG prevents another lossy compression step, but it cannot restore detail already lost in a JPEG. Converting a JPEG to PNG preserves the JPEG’s existing artifacts; it does not recreate the original photograph.

Create a PNG from a blank canvas

  1. Open an image editor and create a new document at the required pixel dimensions.
  2. Choose a transparent background for a logo, cutout, icon, or overlay. Choose a solid color if transparency is not needed.
  3. Add text, shapes, drawings, or imported elements.
  4. Choose Export, Export As, or Save As.
  5. Select PNG, preferably RGB or RGBA for a normal full-color image.
  6. Save the file with a .png extension.
  7. Open the exported file independently and check that it has the expected dimensions and background.

A checkerboard pattern in an editor usually represents transparency; it is not printed into the image. To verify that transparency survived, place the exported PNG over a dark or brightly colored background.

Convert an existing image to PNG

  1. Make a copy of the original so it remains untouched.
  2. Open the copy in an image editor, operating-system utility, or converter.
  3. Crop, resize, rotate, remove the background, or adjust colors if necessary.
  4. Choose Save As, Export, or Export As.
  5. Select PNG and choose the appropriate color mode: RGB/RGBA for normal color, grayscale for grayscale artwork, or indexed color for simple graphics with a limited palette.
  6. Preserve the alpha channel if the source has transparency or you have removed its background.
  7. Save under a new filename, then compare the output with the original.

Converting JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF, or HEIC to PNG changes the encoding. It does not automatically create transparency, improve a low-resolution image, or restore JPEG detail.

Convert an image to PNG on Windows

Menu names vary slightly by Windows edition and installed application, but the built-in Paint workflow is typically:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click the image and choose Open with > Paint.
  2. Choose File > Save as.
  3. Select PNG picture.
  4. Enter a new filename and choose Save.

Paint is suitable for a straightforward conversion or basic resize. It may not preserve advanced metadata, color profiles, layers, or sophisticated transparency workflows. If the result has a white background, that is not equivalent to an alpha-transparent PNG. Use an editor with layers and background-removal tools when transparency matters.

Convert an image to PNG on macOS

Preview commonly provides a quick conversion:

  1. Open the image in Preview.
  2. Choose File > Export.
  3. Select PNG in the format menu.
  4. Choose the destination and filename.
  5. Select Save.

Preview controls differ across macOS releases, so look for Export rather than assuming every version has identical options. Transparency depends on the source and edits performed. Reopen the output and test it against a non-white background.

Convert images to PNG on iPhone or Android

Your built-in photo editor may offer Export or Save as PNG, but many mobile photo apps share or export a converted copy instead of replacing the original. If the option is unavailable, use a reputable image-editing app or transfer the file to a computer.

In Photoshop mobile, Adobe’s current instructions are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • iPhone: choose Share > Quick export as PNG.
  • Android: choose Save and share > Save to device as PNG.

See Adobe’s mobile PNG export instructions. Before uploading a private image to a third-party app, check its privacy, cloud-upload, retention, and subscription policies.

Export PNG files in Photoshop

Save a separate PNG copy

  1. Choose File > Save a Copy.
  2. Enter a filename and location.
  3. Select PNG.
  4. Choose the relevant PNG options and save.

This creates a separate rendered PNG while keeping the original Photoshop document available. See Adobe’s Save your work documentation.

Use Export As

  1. Choose File > Export > Export As.
  2. Select PNG from the format menu.
  3. Enable transparency if required.
  4. Set the scale or dimensions if needed.
  5. Select Export, then choose the destination and filename.

Photoshop’s Export As documentation lists PNG, transparency, and scaling controls.

Export a layer, group, or artboard

Select the layer, group, or artboard, then choose File > Export > Export As or the relevant layer export command. Check the transparency and scale settings before exporting. A layer or artboard can contain transparent areas, while a full document with a visible background layer will normally include that background.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PNG-8, PNG-24, and PNG-32

  • PNG-8: indexed color with up to 256 colors. It can be efficient for simple graphics but may cause banding, color loss, or limited transparency.
  • PNG-24: full RGB color in workflows using this label, generally without an alpha channel.
  • PNG-32/RGBA: full color plus transparency where supported.

Interlacing can let a browser display a rough preview while an image loads, but it can increase file size and is not normally necessary for modern workflows. Adobe’s PNG save documentation covers PNG options and interlacing.

Convert images in GIMP

  1. Open the image in GIMP.
  2. Edit it or add transparency if needed.
  3. Choose File > Export As.
  4. Enter a filename ending in .png.
  5. Choose the PNG export settings.
  6. Select Export. If GIMP displays another settings dialog, confirm the export.

GIMP is a free, open-source choice when you need layers, selections, masks, background removal, and more control than Paint or Preview. Interface labels can vary by major version; consult the official GIMP site and documentation for your installed version.

Batch-convert images with ImageMagick

ImageMagick is useful for developers, technical users, and repeatable workflows. Prefer the modern magick command rather than relying on the older convert command.

Basic conversion

magick input.jpg output.png

Convert and resize

magick input.jpg -resize 50% output.png

ImageMagick documents these examples at magick and convert.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Batch conversion on macOS or Linux

for file in *.jpg; do
  magick "$file" "${file%.jpg}.png"
done

Batch conversion in Windows PowerShell

Get-ChildItem *.jpg | ForEach-Object {
  magick $_.FullName ($_.DirectoryName + "\" + $_.BaseName + ".png")
}

Create or flatten transparency

magick -size 800x600 canvas:none output.png
magick input.png -background white -alpha remove -alpha off output.png

The first command creates a transparent canvas. The second flattens transparency onto white. Do not use it if you need the alpha channel preserved.

Inspect the result

magick identify -verbose output.png

Check the reported format, dimensions, colorspace, depth, and alpha information. ImageMagick supports PNG variants such as PNG8, PNG24, PNG32, PNG48, and PNG64; its PNG compression levels range from 0 through 9. Higher compression levels generally take longer and may produce smaller files, but ordinary PNG compression remains lossless. See the format reference, definitions, and alpha-channel options.

How to preserve or create transparency

PNG supports transparency, but a PNG does not automatically have a transparent background. A JPEG cannot contain an alpha channel, so converting it to PNG leaves its white or colored background intact unless you deliberately remove that background.

For a transparent logo or cutout:

  1. Open the source in an editor with selections, masks, or background-removal tools.
  2. Remove or hide the background layer.
  3. Confirm that the editor shows a transparency checkerboard.
  4. Export as RGB/RGBA PNG or another PNG mode with alpha support.
  5. Test the result over both light and dark backgrounds.

Semi-transparent edges can show halos if the source was previously composited against white or another color. PNG-8 may provide only limited or binary transparency depending on the encoder. Use an RGBA PNG when smooth partial transparency is important.

Reduce PNG file size

  • Resize first: reducing pixel dimensions usually saves more space than changing a compression setting.
  • Choose the correct color depth: use indexed PNG only for simple graphics where palette reduction is invisible.
  • Use full RGB/RGBA when necessary: reducing colors can cause banding or visible loss.
  • Remove unnecessary metadata cautiously: metadata and ICC profiles can increase size, but removing them may affect color consistency, copyright information, or workflow data.
  • Choose another format for photographs: JPEG, WebP, or AVIF may be more efficient when transparency and lossless encoding are not required.

PNG compression settings generally trade encoding time for file size, not visible quality. Resizing, palette reduction, bit-depth reduction, and other preprocessing can still change the image.

Color-management considerations

A converted file can look different because of an embedded ICC profile, a CMYK source, a wide-gamut color space, or an application that ignores color profiles. For ordinary websites and general-purpose screens, converting to sRGB is often the safest choice unless the destination specifies another profile.

Embedding a color profile can improve consistency across managed applications, but it may increase file size and expose compatibility problems in poorly implemented systems. Photoshop’s save documentation includes color-profile options.

Online PNG converters

An online converter can be convenient for a one-off, non-sensitive file:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose a reputable service.
  2. Upload the image and select PNG as the output.
  3. Convert and download the result.
  4. Delete the uploaded file if the service provides that option.
  5. Inspect the downloaded file for dimensions, transparency, and file size.

Do not upload passports, medical records, confidential business artwork, private family photos, unreleased products, or images subject to contractual restrictions unless you understand the service’s handling and retention terms. Online tools may resize or recompress files, remove metadata, lose transparency, add watermarks, impose limits, or retain uploads. For sensitive images, use a local editor or ImageMagick.

Troubleshooting

The file will not upload

You may have renamed the extension instead of converting the file, exceeded a file-size or dimension limit, used an unsupported color mode or bit depth, or created a corrupt file. Run:

magick identify output.png

If necessary, re-export as a conventional 8-bit RGB or RGBA PNG.

Transparency disappeared

The source may have had a white background rather than transparency, the editor may have flattened the image, a background layer may have been exported, or the selected PNG mode may not support the required alpha information. Reopen the source, hide the background, confirm the checkerboard, export as RGBA, and test over a contrasting background. Some destinations display transparency as white.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PNG is much larger than the original

This is normal when converting a JPEG photograph to a lossless, full-color PNG. Other causes include 16-bit output, retained metadata, embedded profiles, or increased dimensions. Keep PNG for transparency, text, line art, or lossless requirements; use JPEG, WebP, or AVIF for photographs when the destination supports them.

The colors look wrong

Check whether the source is CMYK or wide-gamut, whether an ICC profile is embedded, whether the target application manages color, and whether the file was truly converted rather than renamed.

The output is blurry

Conversion alone should not reduce pixel dimensions, but an accidental resize, a smaller export scale, display scaling, repeated editing, or enlarging a small source can cause blur. Compare the original and output dimensions before judging the conversion.

An animated or multipage source converted incorrectly

PNG is ordinarily a single-frame format. GIF, APNG, PDF, multipage TIFF, and video sources may require explicit frame selection or animation-aware output. ImageMagick notes that APNG may need an explicit apng: format specifier and may otherwise be read as only the first frame; see its format documentation.

Quick method guide

Need Best fit
One quick Windows conversion Paint or another installed editor
One quick macOS conversion Preview
Transparent logo or background removal GIMP, Photoshop, or another editor with layers and masks

Photographic web assets Consider WebP, AVIF, or JPEG instead of PNG

Common misconceptions

  • “Changing the extension converts the file.” It does not; the internal encoding must be rewritten.
  • “PNG always gives better quality.” PNG avoids further lossy compression but cannot restore JPEG detail and may create a much larger file.
  • “PNG is always best for websites.” It depends on the image content, transparency needs, browser support, and file-size target.
  • “PNG has a JPEG-style quality slider.” Ordinary PNG compression is lossless. Settings generally trade encoding time for file size; color reduction and resizing are what can change appearance.
  • “A PNG automatically has a transparent background.” PNG supports transparency, but the exported file must actually contain an alpha channel.
  • “PNG preserves editable layers.” A normal PNG preserves the rendered raster image, not the original document structure.
