Yes—Adobe Illustrator can type and compose Arabic correctly. The essential workflow is to enable an Arabic keyboard, choose a font with Arabic glyphs, and select Middle Eastern & South Asian Single-line Composer from the Paragraph panel menu. You may also need right-to-left paragraph controls, depending on your Illustrator edition and document.
A keyboard layout only enters Arabic characters; it does not guarantee connected letterforms, correct bidirectional behavior, or proper punctuation. Full Arabic and Hebrew controls also depend on the regional edition of Illustrator you have installed.
Before you start
- A current desktop installation of Illustrator.
- An Arabic keyboard layout enabled in Windows or macOS.
- An Arabic-capable OpenType font with connected contextual forms and any diacritics you need.
- A live text object created with the Type tool.
Adobe identifies the Middle Eastern version with an English interface and the North African French version with a French interface as editions with full Arabic and Hebrew right-to-left support. Illustrator editions may expose different controls, so menu labels can vary by release, localization, and installed regional version. See Adobe’s current explanation of Illustrator Asian composers.

Step 1: Add an Arabic keyboard
Windows
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Add Arabic as a language or keyboard.
- Switch input languages from the taskbar language indicator or press Windows key + Space.
macOS
- Open System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit.
- Add an Arabic input source.
- Switch sources from the menu bar or with your configured keyboard shortcut.
Operating-system labels can change between Windows and macOS releases. If you are unsure whether the layout works, switch to Arabic and type a short phrase into another text field before returning to Illustrator.

Step 2: Create an Arabic text object
- Open Illustrator and create or open a document.
- Select the Type tool.
- Click once for a short label or logo, creating point text.
- For paragraphs, menus, packaging copy, or other text that must wrap, drag an area-text frame.
- Select the text object or highlight the text you intend to format.
You can type directly after switching to the Arabic keyboard, or paste text from another application. For a cleanest test, type or paste a short known-good Arabic phrase before adding longer copy.
Step 3: Choose an Arabic-compatible font
Open the font menu and choose a typeface that explicitly supports Arabic. It should include connected contextual forms, the characters used by your language, and any required diacritics. Adobe Arabic is one example associated with Adobe’s English/Arabic-enabled installation, but it is not the only suitable choice. Adobe Fonts can help Creative Cloud users discover additional typefaces at fonts.adobe.com.
A Latin font with an Arabic-sounding name is not necessarily an Arabic font. Missing-glyph boxes, isolated letters, misplaced marks, or unexpected substitutions usually indicate insufficient font coverage, a missing activation, or a character outside the font’s supported range. Check the font license before using it in a logo, client artwork, application, website, or printer handoff.

- Open Window > Type > Paragraph.
- Open the Paragraph panel’s flyout menu.
- Choose Middle Eastern & South Asian Single-line Composer.
This is the key Illustrator setting for Arabic shaping and mixed Arabic–English text. If the option is not visible in the main panel, use the panel flyout menu. Menu wording may differ slightly by Illustrator release or interface language.

Illustrator also provides Middle Eastern & South Asian Every-line Composer. It is an alternative composition mode, not a keyboard setting. Start with Single-line Composer unless your layout requires the different line-composition behavior.
After applying the composer, Arabic letters should form their appropriate contextual connections instead of appearing as unrelated isolated characters. Adobe documents both composer options and their use for Arabic, Hebrew, English, and other mixed-language text in its Illustrator typography guidance.
Step 5: Set right-to-left direction and alignment
Arabic normally reads right to left, but right alignment is not the same thing as right-to-left composition. Alignment determines where a paragraph sits in its text frame; direction determines how bidirectional text is interpreted.

- In Window > Type > Paragraph, choose the appropriate right-to-left paragraph direction if your Illustrator edition provides that control.
- Choose right, left, center, or justified alignment according to the design.
- Review the result at the intended size.
Arabic paragraphs are often right-aligned, but a centered title, left-aligned artistic treatment, or another design choice can be correct. Do not use alignment alone as a repair for disconnected or reversed Arabic.

Mixed Arabic and English text
Arabic, English, Latin URLs, dates, punctuation, and numbers can appear in the same paragraph. Arabic runs generally flow right to left while Latin runs flow left to right. Parentheses and punctuation may look surprising in mixed-direction text, so inspect the actual rendered result rather than relying only on the order in the source text.
For complicated headlines or labels, separate Arabic and English into different text objects. This often provides more predictable control over brand names, URLs, dates, and numerals.
Step 6: Justify Arabic text with Kashidas
For justified Arabic paragraphs, Illustrator can insert Kashidas—elongations placed in suitable Arabic connections to distribute text across a line. Kashidas are not ordinary spaces and do not repair missing glyphs.
- Select the Arabic paragraph with the Type tool.
- If necessary, choose Type > Convert To Area Type.
- Open Window > Type > Character.
- Open the Character panel menu and choose Kashidas.
- Open Window > Type > Paragraph and apply a justified alignment.
- Choose an insertion option such as None, Short, Medium, Long, or Stylistic.
Review every justified paragraph visually. A longer Kashida setting may improve line distribution in one font or text block but look excessive in another. Adobe’s documented workflow is described in Justify text using Kashida and hyphenation.

Arabic numerals are not one universal style
Confirm which numeral style your language and publication require:
- Western digits:
0 1 2 3 - Arabic-Indic digits:
٠ ١ ٢ ٣ - Persian digits:
۰ ۱ ۲ ۳
These are distinct character and presentation choices. Do not assume that “Arabic numbers” automatically means one particular set. The available digit controls depend on the Illustrator edition and text configuration.
What to do when pasted Arabic is wrong
Text pasted from Word, a browser, or a messaging application may carry directional markers, unusual spaces, nonstandard punctuation, or Arabic, Persian, and Urdu characters with different Unicode values. Pasting is only one possible cause; it is not automatically the problem.

- Paste as plain text when that option is available.
- Apply the Arabic-capable font after pasting.
- Select all text in the object.
- Reapply Middle Eastern & South Asian Single-line Composer.
- Check paragraph direction and alignment.
- Replace suspicious punctuation or digits manually.
- Type a short known-good phrase to determine whether the issue is in the source text or Illustrator.
Troubleshooting Arabic text in Illustrator

| It looks correct only after outlining | The live-text configuration is still wrong | Fix the font, composer, direction, and source text before outlining. Outlining freezes the current appearance; it does not repair the text. |
Should you convert Arabic text to outlines?
Keep Arabic as live text whenever you may need edits, translation, proofreading, searching, accessibility, or future layout changes. Outlines can preserve the appearance for final production when the copy is approved and the receiving system cannot use the font, but they remove editability and text search and can make scaling or revisions more difficult.

Save an editable Illustrator master before outlining. Never use outlines as the first solution to disconnected letters, reversed text, or incorrect spelling.
Final Arabic Illustrator preflight checklist
- The Arabic spelling and punctuation have been proofread by an appropriate speaker or editor.
- The font explicitly supports the required Arabic characters and diacritics.
- The Middle Eastern & South Asian composer is applied.
- Right-to-left direction and alignment have been checked separately.
- Arabic–English mixtures, URLs, dates, parentheses, and numerals have been tested.
- Justified paragraphs use visually appropriate Kashida settings.
- The font license covers the intended client, print, logo, web, or application use.
- An editable live-text master file is retained.
- A PDF proof has been opened on another system or at the printer when appropriate.
- Text is outlined only after final approval and only when production requirements justify it.
When another Adobe app is more appropriate
Illustrator is the natural choice for logos, vector illustrations, packaging graphics, and editable artwork. For books, magazines, brochures, and long multi-column Arabic documents, Adobe InDesign is generally the more suitable layout application because Adobe documents dedicated Arabic and Hebrew publishing controls for it. Photoshop has its own international-text workflow for raster compositions; its menus should not be substituted for Illustrator instructions.
If you need Illustrator-native files or vector production, see Adobe Illustrator. If your goal is only to proofread or prepare Arabic copy, a dedicated word processor may be sufficient before bringing the approved text into Illustrator.
