Yes—but with an important limitation. In classic Microsoft Paint, you can replace one exact color while dragging by putting the target color in Color 1, the replacement in Color 2, and using the Eraser with the right mouse button. Paint does not provide a general-purpose command that automatically finds and removes every pixel of a chosen color across the entire image.
Replace one color with another in classic Paint
This method works best on flat-color artwork, pixel art, simple icons, and screenshots with solid-color areas. It changes matching pixels underneath the eraser path rather than scanning the whole image.
- Open the image in Microsoft Paint.
- Use the Color Picker tool and click the color you want to change.
- Confirm that the target color is assigned to Color 1. In newer Paint versions, identify the primary color swatch visually if the layout differs.
- Click Color 2 and choose the color that should replace it.
- Select the Eraser.
- Hold the right mouse button and drag over the target-colored areas.
- Release the button and inspect the result. Repeat on other matching areas as needed.
- Save the edited image under a new filename so the original remains available.
In this workaround, Color 1 is the color being affected, Color 2 is the replacement color, and right-clicking applies the replacement. Microsoft documents this traditional Color 1/Color 2 eraser behavior in its Paint community guidance: Microsoft Paint color-replacement instructions.

How to remove the color instead of replacing it
“Erase” can mean either painting over a color or making those pixels transparent. The result depends on your Paint version, document, selected layer, and export format.
In current Windows 11 Paint versions that support layers and transparency:
- Make a backup or duplicate the image layer.
- Open the Layers panel, if it is available.
- Select the layer containing the color.
- Use the eraser over the areas you want to remove.
- Look for a gray-and-white checkerboard. This normally indicates transparent pixels.
- Save as PNG if you need transparency to remain in the finished file.
Modern Paint may reveal a lower layer when pixels are erased. If there is no layer underneath, the erased area may show as checkerboard transparency. Microsoft describes these layers and transparency features in its Paint layers and transparency announcement.

If you want a solid background rather than transparency, choose that background as Color 2 and use the replacement method. Changing a file’s extension to .png does not create transparency by itself, and JPEG is not appropriate when transparent pixels must be preserved.
Why it may not remove the color cleanly
You used the left mouse button
The classic replacement technique requires the right mouse button. A left-button drag may produce ordinary erasing or painting instead.
The colors are assigned in the wrong order
Check that the color you want to affect is Color 1 and the replacement is Color 2. If the swatches are reversed, the result will not be what you expect.

The color is only visually similar
Paint’s traditional workaround is most reliable when the target is one exact stored color. A photograph, gradient, shadow, anti-aliased edge, or compressed JPEG may contain many slightly different shades that look identical to your eye.

JPEG compression can also create colored speckles around edges. When possible, edit the original PNG or BMP rather than a repeatedly compressed JPEG. Zoom in and use a smaller eraser around boundaries.
The eraser is the wrong size
A large eraser is faster on open areas but can remove nearby artwork. Use the size controls to choose a smaller tip for outlines, text, and detailed edges.

You are editing the wrong layer
In a layered image, select the layer that actually contains the target color. Erasing another layer may appear to do nothing, or may reveal a different layer instead of producing checkerboard transparency.
Modern Paint behaves differently
Older instructions assume that the eraser replaces matching pixels with Color 2. Modern Windows 11 Paint can interpret erasing as transparency, particularly in documents using layers. - Pixel art
- Flat-color cartoons and illustrations
- Simple logos and icons
- Uniform screenshot backgrounds
- Artwork created directly in Paint
It is a poor fit when the target includes shading, gradients, photographs, semi-transparent pixels, or anti-aliased text. For example, the edge of a red shape may contain dark red, pink, orange, and partially transparent pixels. Replacing only the central red pixels can leave a visible fringe.
If “remove red” means a range of reds rather than one exact RGB value, use an editor with a color range, magic wand, tolerance, or fuzziness control. Microsoft similarly warns that areas appearing to be one color may contain subtle variations in its guidance on making picture colors transparent: Microsoft’s transparency guidance.
Can Paint erase every occurrence of a color automatically?
Generally, no. Current Paint does not have a documented, general-purpose “select every pixel of this color” command comparable to a magic wand or color-range selector. You can manually cover each occurrence with the right-click eraser method, but Paint is not the best choice for global color removal.

- Control color tolerance or fuzziness
- Feather or soften the selection edge
- Remove similar shades without leaving a halo
- Preserve and edit transparency precisely
Do not confuse Paint’s Object Select with color selection. Microsoft describes Object Select as AI-assisted isolation of an individual object, not as a tool that selects every pixel sharing a specified color. Its availability depends on the Windows and Paint versions, device hardware, and rollout status; Microsoft’s current documentation says the described AI features require a compatible Copilot+ PC and an up-to-date Paint app: Microsoft’s Paint Object Select documentation.
Paint 3D historically included selection and background-related features, but it should not be assumed to be installed or supported on every current Windows system. Microsoft Photos also offers background removal and object-oriented editing, but those features are not a general substitute for selecting every pixel of a chosen color: Microsoft Photos editing guidance.
Best approach by image type

Recover from an unwanted edit
- Press Ctrl+Z immediately after an unwanted stroke.
- If the image is badly damaged, close it without saving and reopen the original.
- Work from a duplicate and save to a new filename.
- Zoom in before editing boundaries.
- Use a smaller eraser near outlines.
- If transparency is unwanted, replace the color with a solid background instead of erasing it.
- If one visible color contains many shades, switch to software with tolerance controls.
Bottom line
For a solid color in classic Paint, assign the target to Color 1, the replacement to Color 2, select the Eraser, and drag with the right mouse button. This replaces matching pixels along the path you cover. If you need Paint to find and remove every occurrence automatically—or need to handle photographs, gradients, or anti-aliased edges—you will need a more capable color-selection editor.
