Ubuntu 20.04, code-named Focal Fossa, included an official wallpaper collection built around its fossa mascot, commonly known as Felicity. You can download the original mascot wallpapers and SVG assets from Ubuntu’s Community Hub, or download the official wallpaper package and extract its files without installing Ubuntu.
Official download links
- Mascot wallpapers and design assets: Ubuntu Community Hub: Focal Fossa mascot wallpapers. This is the best source for original-resolution mascot artwork, alternate treatments, color and grayscale variants, and editable SVG assets.
- Installed Ubuntu wallpaper collection: Ubuntu archive wallpaper directory. Look for
ubuntu-wallpapers-focal_20.04.2-0ubuntu1_all.deb. - Wallpapers from other Ubuntu releases: Ubuntu’s 20-year wallpaper collection.
The Community Hub thread is the more useful source for mascot-specific artwork. The .deb package is the reproducible official route to the wallpaper files shipped with Ubuntu’s desktop package, but it may not contain every SVG or design asset shown in the discussion.
What is in the Ubuntu 20.04 collection?
The collection is broader than a single default image. It includes the main Focal Fossa mascot wallpaper, alternate mascot treatments, colored and grayscale versions, multiple resolutions and aspect ratios, photographic backgrounds, and abstract or graphical wallpapers used by the desktop package.
Canonical’s Ubuntu 20.04 desktop announcement also identifies several notable additions: photographs sourced from Unsplash, SVG assets intended for community remixing, and a restored 4K version of the historical Hardy Heron wallpaper. That Hardy Heron file is separate from the Focal Fossa artwork, so the presence of 4K material does not mean every Focal wallpaper is 4K.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
The fossa is a carnivorous mammal native to Madagascar. “Felicity” is the name used for the Ubuntu 20.04 mascot character; it is not the animal’s species name.
Method 1: Download the mascot artwork
- Open the official Focal Fossa mascot discussion.
- Locate the original-resolution wallpaper attachments or linked files.
- Download the file itself, rather than saving a preview or thumbnail.
- Check its pixel dimensions after downloading and save it in a permanent folder such as
Pictures/Wallpapers.
The discussion may look more like a design release thread than a polished wallpaper gallery. That is useful: it distinguishes Canonical’s source assets from unrelated fan-made remixes and makes the SVG files available for people who want to edit or remix the artwork.
Method 2: Download and extract the official wallpaper package
Open the official Ubuntu archive directory and download:

The archive listing gives this package a size of approximately 11 MB. The _all.deb suffix means the package is architecture-independent, which is appropriate for extracting image files on supported Debian-family systems.

You do not need to install Ubuntu—or install the package—to retrieve the wallpapers. On Ubuntu or another Debian-based system with dpkg-deb, run:
mkdir focal-wallpapers
dpkg-deb -x ubuntu-wallpapers-focal_20.04.2-0ubuntu1_all.deb focal-wallpapers
find focal-wallpapers/usr/share/backgrounds -type f
The extracted wallpapers are under focal-wallpapers/usr/share/backgrounds/. To copy them into your personal wallpaper directory:
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/backgrounds
cp -r focal-wallpapers/usr/share/backgrounds/* ~/.local/share/backgrounds/
Windows and macOS users can use a file utility that supports Debian packages. A .deb is a Debian/Ubuntu package container, not a generic image archive, so extraction support is required. Do not install Ubuntu solely to obtain these files.
Method 3: Install the collection through Apt
If you are running Ubuntu and the package is available through your configured repositories:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install ubuntu-wallpapers-focal
Installed files are normally placed in:
/usr/share/backgrounds/
To inspect them:
find /usr/share/backgrounds -type f
On the standard GNOME desktop, open Settings, select Appearance, and choose an image under Background. Labels and layout can differ by Ubuntu release, GNOME version, and Ubuntu flavor.
If Apt cannot find the package, refresh the index and search:
sudo apt update
apt search ubuntu-wallpapers
If it is still unavailable, use the official archive package and extract it instead of adding an untrusted PPA or changing repositories just for wallpapers.
Setting a downloaded image as your wallpaper
- Save the original image to a permanent folder.
- Open your desktop’s appearance or background settings.
- Choose Add Picture, Browse, or the equivalent option.
- Select the downloaded image.
- Choose a fit mode such as Fit, Fill, Zoom, Center, or Tile.
Fit preserves more of the composition but may leave borders. Fill or Zoom fills the screen but can crop the fossa or Ubuntu branding near the edges. If the mascot is cut off, try Fit or choose a variant with a closer aspect ratio.
Rank #4

- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects. The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments.¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain a competitive edge with optimizable game settings. Color and image contrast can be instantly adjusted to see scenes more clearly, while Game Mode adjusts any game to fill your screen with every detail in view.

- A MODERN AESTHETIC: Featuring a super-slim design with ultra-thin border bezels, this monitor enhances any setup with a sleek, modern look. Enjoy a lightweight and stylish addition to any environment.
Choosing the right resolution and aspect ratio
“HD” is a broad description, not a guarantee that every file has the same dimensions. Check the downloaded file’s pixel dimensions and use the largest original that suits your display.
- 16:9 monitor: choose a landscape file matching or exceeding the display resolution.
- Laptop: use an image at least as wide as the laptop’s native resolution.
- 4K display: use a file measuring 3840×2160 or another clearly identified 4K-equivalent size when available.
- Phone: choose a portrait or phone-oriented file when supplied; do not assume that a desktop landscape image will crop well.
- Multiple monitors: use a wide image or configure separate backgrounds for each display.
- Dark desktop theme: compare the light, grayscale, or darker variants for better icon contrast.
- Minimal desktop: use an abstract or photographic background if the mascot makes desktop icons difficult to read.
The official announcement confirms a 4K Hardy Heron wallpaper, while the Community Hub materials describe multiple resolutions and color treatments for the Focal artwork. Do not label every file in the collection as 4K.
Why a wallpaper may look blurry or cropped
- Blurry image: you may have saved a thumbnail, preview, or compressed copy. Download the original attachment and check its dimensions.
- Image appears stretched: select Fit or use a file with a matching aspect ratio.
- Mascot is cropped: change Zoom or Fill to Fit, or choose a different landscape or portrait variant.
- Wallpaper looks small: Center may display the image at its native size; use Fit or Fill if borders are undesirable.
- Wallpaper disappears after an upgrade: reinstall
ubuntu-wallpapers-focal, inspect/usr/share/backgrounds/, or extract the package into~/.local/share/backgrounds/.
Licensing and reuse
Using an Ubuntu wallpaper on your personal desktop is the straightforward case. Redistribution, commercial use, and derivative artwork require more care because Canonical-created mascot artwork, Ubuntu logos, package files, and photographs may not all have identical terms.
Before publishing a remix or using an image commercially, inspect the asset’s accompanying license, package copyright information, and any photographer attribution requirements. Ubuntu trademarks, including the Ubuntu name and logo, can raise separate trademark questions when used in a product, advertisement, or branded design. Do not assume that the entire collection is automatically cleared for every commercial purpose.
Ubuntu 20.04 context
Ubuntu 20.04 is an older LTS release, not the current Ubuntu version. Ubuntu’s release archive lists Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS as the final point release shown for Focal. You do not need to install that operating system to download its artwork; the Community Hub assets and wallpaper package are available independently.
For newer mascot resources, see Ubuntu’s design resources. For historical wallpapers across many Ubuntu releases, use Ubuntu’s anniversary collection. For the most accurate Focal Fossa files, however, start with the official Community Hub thread or the Focal wallpaper package.
