The easiest starting point is Chrome Canvas. It is simple, works on Chromebooks, and avoids the Android-app compatibility problems that can make some drawing apps awkward on a laptop-shaped device. For older children who want layers and more control, try Kleki; for offline drawing, consider Sketchpad.
This updated guide focuses mainly on browser tools and Chrome Web Store options rather than repeating an old Android-app list. “No ads or in-app purchases” means no advertising inside the drawing experience and no paid unlocks required for basic drawing. Optional donations, external websites, account features, and school licensing are separate issues. Check the current store listing before installing on a managed Chromebook.
Quick comparison
| Tool | Best for | Works with | Offline or local saving | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome Canvas | Simple doodling | Mouse, trackpad, touchscreen, compatible stylus | Local saving; image export | Basic tools and possible school-account sync limits |
| Kleki | More capable painting | Mouse, touch, pressure-sensitive pen | Browser storage | More tools to learn; local storage is not backup |
| Sketchpad for Google Chrome | Offline sketching and export | Mouse, touch, stylus | Automatic saving; PNG/JPEG export | Third-party extension status should be reviewed |
| FingerCanvas | Young children with touchscreen Chromebooks | Primarily touch | Listed as offline | Current maintenance, permissions, and monetization should be checked |
| Draw in the Air | Gesture-based activities | Webcam and hand gestures | Depends on the browser experience | Requires camera access and is not a conventional art canvas |
| Google Keep drawing mode | Sketches attached to notes | Mouse, touch, compatible stylus | Account and platform dependent | Not designed for full illustrations |
These are not all the same kind of “app.” Chrome Canvas, Kleki, and Google Keep are web applications; the others are Chrome Web Store tools. A Chromebook does not need to support Android apps for most of these recommendations.

Chrome Canvas is the most natural place to start on a Chromebook. Google says it works on Chromebooks, Chromebases, and Chromeboxes. Children can create a blank drawing or draw over an imported image, then save or share the result.
Drawings can be saved locally when the child is not signed in. The usual export path is More → Save as image. Signing in may allow drawings to be available across signed-in devices, but Google notes that work or school Workspace accounts may be unable to sign in or synchronize drawings because of administrator settings.
- Input: mouse, trackpad, touchscreen, and compatible stylus.
- Saving: local saving and image export; synchronization depends on the account and administrator.
- Ads and purchases: there is no normal paid-unlock drawing workflow in the Chromebook experience, but check availability and current labels on the device.
- Trade-off: it is intentionally basic, so children wanting layers or advanced painting controls may outgrow it.
For most families, Chrome Canvas is the safest first download—or, more accurately, the safest first browser tool to try.

Kleki runs in the browser and offers considerably more depth than a basic sketchpad. Its official site lists layers, blend modes, pressure-sensitive pen support, touch gestures, fill, text, shapes, filters, and image-editing tools. It also advertises browser storage and cross-platform operation.

That combination makes Kleki a strong choice for a child who has moved beyond a single brush and color palette. A touchscreen or pressure-sensitive pen makes it more enjoyable, but it also works with a mouse or trackpad.
- Input: mouse, trackpad, touch, and pressure-sensitive pen where supported by the Chromebook.
- Saving: browser storage can remember work for another session.
- Ads and purchases: the official site presents optional donations as a way to support development; that is different from locking brushes or canvases behind in-app purchases.
- Privacy reminder: local browser storage is not cloud backup. Export important work rather than relying on a browser profile alone.
- Trade-off: layers and filters make it more capable, but also slightly less immediate for a very young child.
Kleki is the strongest pick here when “easy” needs to include room to grow.

Best for: families that want a straightforward sketchpad, automatic saving, and simple image export.
The current Chrome Web Store listing describes Sketchpad as free and offline, with no account or sign-up required. It says the tool automatically saves work and supports PNG and JPEG export, clipboard use, printing, touch, and stylus input. The listing identifies version 4.0.0, updated July 6, 2026, and includes a developer disclosure stating that the extension does not collect or use user data.
That makes it particularly useful when a child needs to draw during travel or on a restricted network. It can also be handy for annotating screenshots or making quick diagrams, not just painting.
Rank #3

- Ads and purchases: the current listing should be checked for any change before installation; do not assume an old status applies forever.
- Trade-off: it is a third-party Chrome Web Store tool rather than a Google product.
“Offline” should be read carefully: drawing and saving may work without a connection, while sharing or other web-dependent actions may not.
4. FingerCanvas: a touch-first option for young children
Best for: preschoolers using a touchscreen Chromebook or Chromebook tablet.
FingerCanvas is described in the Chrome Web Store as a touch-enabled drawing canvas for Chromebooks that works offline. Its appeal is simplicity: a child can draw directly with a finger instead of wrestling with a trackpad.
- Input: designed primarily for touch; non-touch use may be less compelling.
- Saving: the listing describes offline operation, but confirm the current export and recovery behavior.
- Ads and purchases: check the current listing for advertising, paid upgrades, permissions, and developer information before handing it to a child.
- Trade-off: do not assume pressure-sensitive stylus support unless the current documentation explicitly confirms it.
FingerCanvas is a good candidate for a very young child, but it deserves more careful current-listing verification than the better-documented browser tools above.
5. Draw in the Air: a creative activity using hand gestures
Best for: children who enjoy movement, tracing, and novelty more than conventional brush drawing.

Draw in the Air uses a Chromebook webcam to track hand gestures. Its listing describes a free paint mode, pinch-to-draw interaction, and tracing activities for letters, numbers, and shapes. It also says that no account is required and that webcam tracking is processed locally.
This is better understood as a gesture-based creative activity than as an alternative to Kleki or Sketchpad. A child who struggles with a trackpad may find it more accessible, while another child may find the camera controls frustrating.
- Input: webcam and hand movements, not a normal mouse-first canvas.
- Privacy: review the camera permission before enabling it. Local processing is a narrower claim than “the tool is completely private.”
- Environment: lighting, camera quality, browser permissions, and available space affect the experience.
- Ads and purchases: check the current listing before making an absolute no-ads or no-purchases claim.
Use it with supervision, especially on a school Chromebook where camera access may be blocked or prohibited.

Which tool should you choose?
- Choose Chrome Canvas for the simplest blank canvas and the least setup.
- Choose Kleki for layers, painting, touch gestures, and a tool a child can grow into.
- Choose Sketchpad when offline use, automatic saving, and PNG/JPEG export matter most.
- Choose FingerCanvas for a very young child with a touchscreen Chromebook, after checking its current listing.
- Choose Draw in the Air for tracing and movement-based creative play, not finished digital painting.
- Choose Google Keep when the drawing belongs with a note, reminder, or school assignment.
Important Chromebook checks before installation
School-managed devices
Schools may block websites, extensions, downloads, camera access, sign-in, or individual apps. Google explains that Chrome Web Store installations can be restricted on managed work or school devices; see its installation guidance.
If an option will not install, ask the administrator whether it is allowed, try a browser-based tool, or use a tool already approved on the device. Chrome Canvas synchronization may also be unavailable for a school Workspace account.
Touch, trackpad, and stylus support
A non-touch Chromebook can still run Chrome Canvas, Kleki, Sketchpad, and Keep, but FingerCanvas loses much of its advantage and Draw in the Air depends on a working camera. A stylus only provides pressure sensitivity when both the Chromebook hardware and the tool support it.
Do not buy a generic USI pen without checking the exact Chromebook model. An external tablet such as One by Wacom may help on a non-touch device, but it adds cost, cables, setup, and compatibility questions.
Offline saving is not backup
Browser storage can disappear if a profile is reset, site data is cleared, Guest mode is used, or the Chromebook is powerwashed. Once a child finishes an important drawing, export it to the Downloads folder or Google Drive, subject to school policy.
No ads does not mean completely private
Before allowing unsupervised use, check whether the tool requires an account, links to external pages, offers public sharing, requests camera access, or stores work outside the device. “Ad-free” answers only the advertising question.

Parent checklist
- Open the current app or extension listing yourself.
- Check for ads, subscriptions, paid unlocks, permissions, and recent maintenance.
- Test the tool on the child’s exact Chromebook model.
- Confirm whether the device is managed by a school or organization.
- Turn off camera access unless a webcam-based tool is genuinely needed.
- Show the child how to export finished drawings.
- Avoid Guest mode if locally saved work needs to survive.
Common problems and fixes
- The tool will not install: the Chromebook may be incompatible or administrator-managed. Ask the school administrator or use a browser tool.
- A drawing disappeared: it may have existed only in browser storage. Export important work instead of relying on automatic local saving.
- The stylus does not respond properly: check whether the Chromebook supports the pen standard and whether the tool supports pressure sensitivity.
- The app looks narrow or phone-sized: it may be an Android app designed for a phone. Browser-first tools usually avoid this problem.
- Sync is unavailable: a Workspace administrator may block Chrome Canvas sign-in or synchronization.
- The camera tool fails: check Chrome’s camera permission, lighting, camera quality, and school restrictions.
The original six-app roundup that inspired this topic was published in 2020. Its Android-app availability and monetization claims should be treated as historical, not as proof of current Chromebook compatibility. The browser-first choices above are more practical starting points for current Chromebook users.
