In desktop Microsoft Word, select the image, open Picture Format, choose Artistic Effects, preview the available presets, and click one to apply it. Depending on your Word version, the presets can create sketch, painting, watercolor, blur, mosaic, photocopy, grain, or textured looks.
The complete workflow is available in supported desktop editions such as Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016. The gallery and its controls can vary between Windows, Mac, and Word versions.

Add an Artistic Effect to a Picture
These steps apply to the desktop Word app. If the image is not already in your document, insert it first with Insert > Pictures.
- Open the Word document.
- Click the picture you want to edit.
- Open the Picture Format tab. In some older interfaces, it may appear as Picture Tools > Format.
- In the Adjust group, select Artistic Effects.
- Hover over a thumbnail to preview the effect on the picture.
- Click the effect you want to use.
Microsoft documents this path in its picture-editing guidance. The exact gallery may differ by edition, operating system, and available ribbon space, so do not worry if your thumbnails have different names or arrangements.
Windows and Mac differences
On Windows, the usual route is Picture Format > Artistic Effects, normally in the Adjust group.
In current Word for Mac, select the picture, open Picture Format, choose Artistic Effects, preview the thumbnails, and select an effect. Ribbon placement and the available adjustment controls can differ from Windows, but the basic workflow is substantially similar.

Artistic Effects applies a preset visual filter to the picture. Depending on the version of Word, examples may resemble a pencil sketch, line drawing, watercolor, paint, pastel, film grain, mosaic, glass, blur, or photocopy.
The feature is separate from the other picture-formatting commands:

| Corrections | Adjusts sharpness, brightness, and contrast. |
| Color | Changes saturation, tone, or recolors the picture. |
| Picture Effects | Adds shadows, reflections, glow, soft edges, bevels, or 3-D rotation. |
| Picture Styles | Applies combinations of borders, shapes, shading, and other formatting. |
A shadow or glow can make a picture look more decorative, but it is not an Artistic Effect. Use the command that matches the change you want.
Adjust the effect
After applying a preset, open Picture Format > Artistic Effects again and choose Artistic Effects Options when that command is available. Word opens the Format Picture pane with the controls supported by that effect.

The controls are not identical for every preset. Use the options Word actually displays rather than expecting every effect to provide the same intensity or detail settings. As you change a setting, the picture preview updates.
For a blur effect, Microsoft documents a Radius control from 0 to 100. A lower radius generally gives a subtler result, while a higher value removes more detail. Strong effects can obscure small text, facial features, and fine texture, particularly when the image will be printed. Replace or remove an effect
Replace the effect
Open Picture Format > Artistic Effects and select a different preset. Word supports only one Artistic Effect on a picture at a time, so the new effect replaces the previous one.
Remove only the Artistic Effect
Open the Artistic Effects gallery and select None or No Artistic Effect, depending on the wording in your version.

Those categories have their own options such as No Shadow or No Glow.
Reset the picture
If you have also changed the image’s color, brightness, contrast, or other formatting, choose Picture Format > Reset Picture when available. Resetting can remove more than the Artistic Effect, so use it cautiously. Microsoft also identifies Reset Picture as the way to undo picture color changes in its picture transparency guidance.
Can you combine multiple Artistic Effects?
No. Word’s Artistic Effects gallery does not stack multiple artistic filters. Applying a second Artistic Effect removes the first one.

- Color, brightness, contrast, or correction adjustments
- A shadow, glow, reflection, or soft edge
- A border or Picture Style
- Cropping
- Transparency, where supported
These are separate formatting categories, not multiple Artistic Effects layered together.
Why is Artistic Effects missing?
1. The picture is not selected
The contextual Picture Format tab normally appears only after you select a picture. Click the actual image, not the surrounding paragraph, text box, or page. Double-clicking the image can also expose the contextual tab in some interfaces.
2. You selected a different object type
A shape filled with a picture, chart, SmartArt object, grouped object, SVG, or screenshot pasted as another object type may not expose the same controls. Try selecting a normal inserted photo or bitmap directly. If the picture is grouped, you may need to ungroup it or select the image within the group.
3. The file is in Compatibility Mode
If the title bar shows [Compatibility Mode], save a copy in the newer .docx format, close and reopen it, and try again. Microsoft recommends converting older files when picture-effect commands are unavailable.
4. You are using Word for the web
The desktop Word app is the dependable route for the full picture-formatting workflow. Microsoft specifically documents that Blur is unavailable in Word for the web and that pictures cannot be made transparent there. If controls are missing in a browser, choose Open in Desktop App or open the file directly in desktop Word. Avoid assuming that every Artistic Effect is categorically unavailable online; web features can change.
5. The ribbon is compressed
On a narrow window, commands can collapse into a button, dropdown, or overflow menu. Maximize Word or widen the window and look again. Ribbon width affects how commands are displayed, not necessarily whether the feature exists.
Desktop Word versus Word for the web
Microsoft’s main Artistic Effects documentation covers desktop Word editions, including Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016, with Mac variants included in relevant support coverage. The browser version does not expose every desktop picture control. For advanced image formatting, open the file in the desktop application.

- Save a copy of the document before experimenting.
- Keep the original image separately outside Word.
- Duplicate the picture in the document, then move or hide the backup copy before editing.
- Use None to remove only the Artistic Effect when possible.
- Use Reset Picture only when you are prepared to lose other picture adjustments.
For several pictures, Microsoft says you can select multiple images with Ctrl-click. In Word, applying the same effect to multiple pictures may require copying them to a drawing canvas first; the exact behavior depends on the object arrangement and Word version.
Image quality and printing
Word’s Artistic Effects are convenient document formatting, not a replacement for a dedicated image editor. A heavily stylized image may look acceptable on screen but lose fine detail when printed. Effects can also make text embedded in a picture difficult to read.
Repeated editing and exporting can introduce additional quality loss, especially if the image is compressed. Keep the original file and avoid using a heavily filtered copy when clarity is more important than appearance.
When Word is not enough
Word is a good choice for a quick sketch, painting, blur, or textured treatment in a report, flyer, handout, or school project. Use a dedicated image editor when you need layers, masks, selective effects, precise retouching, professional color control, effects applied to only part of a picture, or a finished standalone graphic.
