Krita is the best free paint app for most Mac users in 2026. It is free, open source, and built for digital painting rather than merely basic image editing. But it is not the right choice for everyone: GIMP is better for Photoshop-style editing, FireAlpaca and MediBang Paint suit manga and line art, Pinta is closer to Microsoft Paint, and Inkscape is the specialist choice for vector artwork.

“Free” also needs clarification. Some apps are genuinely free and open source, some are proprietary freeware, Sketchbook is freemium, and some Mac App Store editions cost money even though the developer provides a free direct download.

Quick comparison

App Best for Free model Mac compatibility Main limitation
Krita Digital painting Free and open source from the official site; paid Mac App Store edition macOS 10.15 or later; current Mac distribution supports Apple silicon More complex than a basic paint program
GIMP Photo editing and Photoshop-style workflows Free and open source macOS 11 Big Sur or later; separate Intel and Apple silicon downloads Less painting-focused than Krita
FireAlpaca Lightweight sketching and line art Free desktop edition Current listed version 2.16.0; macOS 12 or later; native Apple silicon support stated by developer Fewer advanced editing tools
MediBang Paint Manga, comics and collaboration Free website download; paid Mac App Store listing observed at $49.99 Mac OS 11 or later Cloud and premium features complicate the free model
Sketchbook Beginner-friendly sketching Free with in-app purchases See the developer’s current system-requirements page Some Mac features require the Premium Bundle
Pinta Simple Paint-like editing Free and open source Separate Intel and arm64 Mac downloads Not designed for advanced illustration
Inkscape Logos, icons and SVG artwork Free and open source Check the current download options for your Mac Vector-based, not a traditional paint engine
Paintbrush Very basic doodles and annotations Free utility, subject to current project status Current macOS and Apple silicon compatibility require verification May not be maintained for newer Macs

1. Krita: best overall free painting app

Choose Krita if you want a serious digital-painting application without paying for a subscription. Krita is free and open source, and its feature set is aimed at illustrators rather than general-purpose image editing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its toolkit includes customizable brush engines, stabilizers, assistants, layers, masks, clone layers, animation tools and a canvas-only mode. That makes it suitable for illustrations, concept art, comics, storyboards and animation. The official download page lists Krita 5.3.3, released July 29, 2026, with macOS 10.15 or later, 4GB RAM minimum and 16GB recommended: Krita’s download page.

#1 Best Overall
Apple 2026 MacBook Neo 13-inch Laptop with A18 Pro chip: Built for AI and Apple Intelligence, Liquid Retina Display, 8GB Unified Memory, 256GB SSD Storage, 1080p FaceTime HD Camera; Blush
  • AN AMAZING MAC AT A SURPRISING PRICE — With an incredibly portable and durable aluminum design, up to 16 hours of battery life,* and the A18 Pro chip, MacBook Neo is ready to go wherever school takes you.
  • FOUR STUNNING COLORS. ONE DURABLE DESIGN — Choose from four beautiful colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, or Indigo — each with a color-coordinated keyboard. And MacBook Neo is made with a durable recycled aluminum enclosure that helps it reach 60 percent recycled content by weight — the most ever in any Apple product.*
  • FLY THROUGH EVERYDAY ASSIGNMENTS — Whether you’re cramming for finals, using Apple Intelligence* to summarize class notes, creating presentations, or even playing the latest Apple Arcade game,* MacBook Neo delivers the performance and AI capabilities you need to get things done.
  • UP TO 16 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Neo delivers all day battery life, so you can power through from early morning classes to late night study sessions without worrying about plugging in.
  • A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.

The important cost distinction is the download route. The version from Krita’s official website is free. The Mac App Store edition is a separate paid convenience version, observed at $12.99 in the US storefront in August 2026: Krita on the Mac App Store.

Free-version limit: There is no charge for the official desktop download, but the App Store edition is not free.

Best with: A graphics tablet or pen display. It also works with a mouse or trackpad, but pressure-sensitive painting requires compatible hardware and drivers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. GIMP: best free Photoshop alternative

Choose GIMP when painting is part of a wider image-editing workflow. GIMP is free and open source, with strong tools for selections, retouching, compositing, masks, filters, layers and raster-image manipulation.

It is a better fit than Krita for photo editing, thumbnails, web graphics and Photoshop-like compositing. The official download page lists GIMP 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026, with macOS 11 Big Sur or newer and separate Intel and Apple silicon builds: download GIMP from the official project.

GIMP can paint, but its interface and terminology are not as immediately art-focused as Krita’s. Also, the GIMP team warns that it does not publish an official Mac App Store package. Treat an App Store result using the GIMP name as a third-party offering unless the project itself confirms otherwise.

Free-version limit: The official desktop release is free and open source. There is no official GIMP Mac App Store edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best with: A mouse, trackpad or tablet, depending on whether you are editing images or painting.

3. FireAlpaca: best lightweight drawing app

Choose FireAlpaca for accessible sketching, line art and manga-style work without the complexity of a large art suite. It includes a drawing stabilizer and comic-friendly tools while remaining comparatively lightweight.

The developer’s download page lists version 2.16.0 for macOS 12 or later and states that Apple silicon is supported natively: FireAlpaca’s download page. It is a particularly sensible starting point for beginners or users with an older, less powerful Mac, although exact performance depends on canvas size, layers, brush complexity and available memory.

A powerful Neural Engine and next-generation GPU with Neural Accelerators give you a powerful platform for AI.
  • MAKE QUICK WORK OF YOUR TO-DO LIST — Apple Intelligence helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly — whether it’s for school or everyday life. With groundbreaking privacy protections, it gives you peace of mind that no one else can access your data — not even Apple.*
  • UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Air delivers incredible battery life with amazing performance, so you can power through a full day of classes without worrying about plugging in.
  • A BRILLIANT 13.6-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Air supports 1 billion colors, making photos and videos pop with rich contrast and sharp detail, and text appears supercrisp. So everything — from class presentations to movies to games — looks truly stunning.

FireAlpaca has fewer advanced compositing and image-editing features than Krita or GIMP. Do not confuse the normal free edition with FireAlpaca SE, which adds features as a paid version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free-version limit: The standard desktop edition is free; FireAlpaca SE is a separate paid edition.

Best with: A graphics tablet for pressure-sensitive line work, though basic drawing is possible with a mouse or trackpad.

4. MediBang Paint: best for manga and comics

Choose MediBang Paint for comic-oriented tools, screentones, materials and cloud-based workflows. Its desktop software supports comic brushes, fonts, screentones, stabilizers and Group Project features for collaborative comic production.

The official desktop documentation lists Mac OS 11 or later, 100MB of minimum free space, 2GB recommended and 8GB recommended for 64-bit systems. Cloud features require an internet connection: MediBang’s desktop guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MediBang supports MDP, PNG, JPG, BMP, GIF, PSD, TIFF and WebP. MDP is its native format and is shared with FireAlpaca and mdiapp+. However, PSD support does not guarantee perfect preservation of every Photoshop adjustment layer, smart object, font, effect or blending mode.

The free model needs particular care. MediBang’s website describes the desktop software as free, while the Mac App Store desktop listing was observed at $49.99. The store edition also advertises additional premium features and no pop-up ads: MediBang download options and the Mac App Store listing.

Free-version limit: Use the official website route for the free desktop download. Cloud features require an account and internet connection, and premium materials or functions may be restricted.

Best with: A pressure-sensitive tablet or pen display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Sketchbook: best beginner interface, but not fully free on Mac

Choose Sketchbook if a clean, unobtrusive canvas matters more than a deep professional toolkit. Its interface is approachable, with pencils, markers, airbrushes, smear tools, customizable brushes, guides, rulers, stroke tools, layers and blend modes.

Rank #3
Apple 2026 MacBook Neo 13-inch Laptop with A18 Pro chip: Built for AI and Apple Intelligence, Liquid Retina Display, 8GB Unified Memory, 256GB SSD Storage, 1080p FaceTime HD Camera; Indigo

The Mac App Store lists Sketchbook as “Free · In-App Purchases.” A Premium Bundle unlocks additional functionality, so it should not be described simply as a fully free Mac application: Sketchbook for Mac.

Sketchbook is a strong choice for casual sketching, concept thumbnails and new digital artists who find Krita or GIMP intimidating. It is less suitable for advanced animation, complex compositing or highly specialized painting workflows.

For tablet compatibility and current Mac requirements, use the developer’s system-requirements documentation: Sketchbook system requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free-version limit: The Mac version is freemium. Some features require in-app purchases.

Best with: A pressure-sensitive pen tablet or pen display. A MacBook’s trackpad is fine for simple marks, but not an equivalent drawing surface.

6. Pinta: best simple Paint-like editor

Choose Pinta if “paint app” means something close to Microsoft Paint. It is easier to approach than Krita or GIMP and is useful for basic painting, cropping, resizing, annotations and uncomplicated image edits.

Pinta is free and open source. Its official releases page provides separate macOS Intel and arm64 downloads: Pinta releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pinta is not intended for advanced brush engines, animation, comic production or large layered illustration projects. Its advantage is the smaller learning curve and simpler workflow.

Free-version limit: Free and open source.

Best with: A mouse or trackpad. A tablet is unnecessary unless you specifically want pressure-sensitive marks.

7. Inkscape: best free vector drawing app

Choose Inkscape for logos, icons, diagrams, typography and scalable SVG artwork—not for textured pixel painting. Inkscape uses vector paths, so artwork can be enlarged without becoming pixelated.

Rank #4
Apple 2026 MacBook Neo 13-inch Laptop with A18 Pro chip: Built for AI and Apple Intelligence, Liquid Retina Display, 8GB Unified Memory, 256GB SSD Storage, 1080p FaceTime HD Camera; Silver
• A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.

That makes it a useful companion to Krita or GIMP. For example, you might create a logo or diagram in Inkscape, then use a raster painting application for textured artwork. Inkscape is free and open source, but its workflow is fundamentally different from a pressure-sensitive painting program: the official Inkscape site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free-version limit: Free and open source.

Best with: A mouse or trackpad for paths and shapes. A tablet is not required for its main use cases.

8. Paintbrush: best minimal Mac Paint alternative

Choose Paintbrush only for very basic doodles, marks and annotations, and verify compatibility before installing. It is conceptually closest to Microsoft Paint and has a low learning curve.

However, current maintenance status, latest version, minimum macOS version and Apple silicon support were not established in the available documentation. Newer Macs or macOS releases may expose compatibility problems if development has slowed. Check the project page before relying on it: Paintbrush on SourceForge.

If it no longer supports your Mac, use Pinta as the safer simple-editor recommendation rather than forcing an obsolete utility into your workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free-version limit: The utility is presented as free, but current compatibility and maintenance should be confirmed before installation.

Best with: A mouse or trackpad.

Raster versus vector: which kind of app do you need?

Raster apps paint individual pixels. They are best for textured brushes, digital painting, photo editing and illustration. Krita, GIMP, FireAlpaca, MediBang Paint, Sketchbook, Pinta and Paintbrush are primarily raster applications.

Vector apps create mathematical paths. They are best for logos, icons, diagrams, typography and artwork that must scale cleanly. Inkscape is the specialist option here.

Do not choose Inkscape expecting it to behave like Krita, and do not choose Krita if your main requirement is editable SVG logo artwork.

Mouse, trackpad or graphics tablet?

  • Mouse or trackpad: GIMP, Pinta, Inkscape and Paintbrush work well for their main use cases. Sketchbook is also suitable for basic sketching.
  • Graphics tablet recommended: Krita, FireAlpaca and MediBang Paint are much more useful for pressure-sensitive brushwork with a tablet or pen display.
  • MacBook touchscreen: Ordinary MacBooks do not provide a touchscreen drawing surface. Apple Pencil does not work directly on a MacBook screen. A Wacom-style tablet, pen display or a compatible iPad-based workflow is required for natural pen input.

Pressure sensitivity depends on the tablet, its macOS driver, the Mac architecture, the application and the brush settings—not just the app’s name.

File formats and Photoshop compatibility

PNG and JPEG are the practical formats for ordinary exports. SVG is the important format for vector artwork, especially in Inkscape. Krita, GIMP and MediBang each have native project formats designed to preserve editable work, while MediBang uses MDP.

PSD support is useful when moving between Photoshop and free tools, but “opens PSD” does not mean perfect compatibility. Fonts, smart objects, adjustment layers, blending modes, effects, color profiles and layer behavior can change between applications. Keep the original PSD and export a flattened PNG or TIFF when exact visual delivery matters.

Which app should you choose?

  • Choose Krita for serious free digital painting, illustration, comics or animation.
  • Choose GIMP for photo editing, compositing and Photoshop-like raster work.
  • Choose FireAlpaca for lightweight sketching, line art and manga-style drawing.
  • Choose MediBang Paint for comics, screentones, cloud materials and collaborative projects.
  • Choose Sketchbook for the cleanest beginner experience, provided its paid Mac features are acceptable.
  • Choose Pinta for a straightforward Paint-like editor.
  • Choose Inkscape for logos, icons, diagrams and scalable vector art.
  • Choose Paintbrush only for basic tasks after confirming that its current release supports your Mac.

What to install first

  1. Install Krita from the official website if digital painting is your priority.
  2. Add GIMP if you also edit photos, composites or Photoshop files.
  3. Try FireAlpaca or MediBang Paint for a simpler comic-oriented workflow.
  4. Install Inkscape only when you need vector or SVG output.
  5. Use Pinta instead of a large art suite when you mainly need cropping, annotations or basic doodles.

Common Mac problems and fixes

macOS blocks the application

First confirm that the installer came from the developer’s official website. If macOS identifies the developer as untrusted, review the application’s provenance before allowing it in System Settings. Do not bypass security controls for an unverified third-party package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The tablet works but has no pressure sensitivity

Install the tablet manufacturer’s current macOS driver, check its permissions, select the correct tablet input protocol in the art app and test a pressure-sensitive brush. A mouse cannot provide pressure data.

Apple silicon shows a Rosetta prompt

That usually means the downloaded build is Intel-based rather than native Apple silicon. Check whether the developer provides a universal or arm64 build. GIMP provides separate Intel and Apple silicon downloads, while FireAlpaca states native Apple silicon support for its listed current version.

The App Store version costs money

Check whether the developer offers a direct download. This is the situation with Krita and MediBang Paint. Do not assume that a paid store listing means the software itself has no free desktop version.

PSD layers or fonts look wrong

PSD compatibility is not complete format equivalence. Install matching fonts, simplify unsupported effects and retain the source file. Export a flattened image when the recipient does not need editable layers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud materials are unavailable offline

MediBang’s cloud features require an account and internet connection. Download or save local copies of important work and materials rather than treating cloud access as a substitute for backups.

The app is too complex for quick annotations

Use Pinta or Paintbrush instead of opening Krita or GIMP for a simple arrow, crop or handwritten note.

Your Mac is too old

Check the exact minimum macOS version before downloading. The current listed requirements include macOS 10.15 or later for Krita, macOS 11 or later for GIMP and MediBang Paint, and macOS 12 or later for the listed FireAlpaca version. If your Mac cannot upgrade, look for an older compatible release on the developer’s official archive rather than downloading an unofficial package.
