The most reliable way to change an object’s color in Photoshop is to select the object, create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, and refine its layer mask. This keeps the original pixels intact while allowing you to preserve the object’s shadows, highlights, folds, and texture.

For dramatic color changes or realistic product recoloring, a Solid Color fill layer set to Color blending mode often produces a more consistent result. The method you choose depends on the object, its original color, and how much of its natural lighting you need to retain.

The best way to change an object’s color in Photoshop

For most photographs, start with a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. Adobe describes this as a flexible, non-destructive way to recolor a selected object: the adjustment is stored separately from the original image, so you can revise or remove it later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The basic workflow is:

  1. Select the object with Object Selection, Quick Selection, Color Range, or another suitable tool.
  2. Create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer while the selection is active.
  3. Change Hue and Saturation in the Properties panel.
  4. Keep Lightness near 0 initially so the original shading remains visible.
  5. Turn on Colorize if the original color continues to contaminate the replacement.
  6. Paint on the adjustment-layer mask to correct spillover and missed areas.

See Adobe’s current guidance on replacing object colors with Hue/Saturation for the corresponding desktop workflow.

Before you start

  • Keep the original layer intact. Duplicate it if you want an additional backup, and prefer adjustment and fill layers over direct pixel edits.
  • Use RGB Color mode. If the document is grayscale, choose Image > Mode > RGB Color before trying to add color.
  • Work at multiple zoom levels. Inspect the mask at 100% for edge problems, then zoom out to judge whether the color looks natural in the whole image.
  • Expect to refine automatic selections. Object Selection is a useful starting point, not a guarantee of a perfect mask.

Photoshop’s menu names and panel locations can differ between desktop, web, mobile, and different releases. The instructions below describe the current desktop workflow; if a panel is hidden, open it from the Window menu.

Step by step: change an object’s color with Hue/Saturation

1. Open the image

Choose File > Open and select the photograph. In the Layers panel, confirm that the image is available as an editable layer. If it is locked as a Background layer, click the lock icon or duplicate the layer before proceeding.

2. Select the object

Choose the Object Selection tool from the toolbar. Drag a rectangle or rough region around the object. Photoshop will attempt to identify the object inside that region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the selection carefully. Add missed areas with Select More or by holding the appropriate add-to-selection modifier while using the tool. Remove unwanted areas with Select Less. For difficult edges, zoom in and switch to the Quick Selection tool to brush over or subtract individual regions.

Use a different selection method when the object demands it:

  • Object Selection: A good starting point for a clearly defined shirt, car, chair, product, or other recognizable object.
  • Quick Selection: Useful when you need to brush over an object manually.
  • Select Subject: Helpful when the target is the main subject, but it may select more than the specific item you want to recolor.
  • Color Range: Efficient when the object is identified by a distinctive color rather than its shape.
  • Pen tool: Best for clean, hard-edged packaging, furniture, products, or graphic shapes.
  • Lasso or Marquee tools: Appropriate for simple areas and quick edits.

Adobe’s object-adjustment workflow also uses Object Selection and provides selection refinement controls. Difficult hair, fur, translucent materials, and overlapping objects still require manual cleanup.

3. Create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer

Keep the selection active. Then choose Hue/Saturation in the Adjustments panel. You can also use Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Photoshop creates an adjustment layer with a mask based on your selection. The selected object should receive the adjustment while the rest of the image remains unchanged. If the whole image changes, see the troubleshooting section below.

4. Set Hue, Saturation, and Lightness

Use the sliders in the Properties panel:

  • Hue changes the color family, such as shifting red toward purple or blue toward green.
  • Saturation controls how vivid or muted the color appears.
  • Lightness changes brightness. Leave it at or near 0 at first so the object’s existing shadows and highlights remain intact.

There is no universal Hue value that produces a particular color. The correct setting depends on the starting color, the desired color, the lighting, and the material.

  • 8192 Levels of Pen Pressure Sensitivity - Enjoy the accuracy and precision when drawing; Having 233 PPS report rate, 5080LPI resolution, you can paint or draw or sketch smoothly on your Huion Inspiroy series Tablets.

Make small adjustments, then evaluate the object in context. A color that looks correct in the Properties panel can still appear too intense or too dark beside the background.

5. Turn on Colorize when the old color is contaminating the result

If the original color continues to tint the replacement, enable Colorize. Photoshop then applies a more uniform color treatment instead of simply rotating the existing colors.

After enabling Colorize, rebalance Hue, Saturation, and Lightness. Colorize is particularly useful when turning a strongly colored object into a substantially different color. However, it can also flatten natural variations, so it is not automatically the best choice for every photograph. Retain some of the original luminance and highlights whenever they help communicate the object’s shape.

6. Refine the mask

Click the white-and-black mask thumbnail on the adjustment layer, then choose the Brush tool. On a layer mask:

  • White reveals the color adjustment.
  • Black conceals the color adjustment.
  • Gray, or a brush with reduced opacity, applies the effect partially.

Paint with black over background areas, hardware, logos, or neighboring objects that should not change. Paint with white to restore missed parts of the object. Use a hard brush for crisp product edges and a soft brush for fabric, hair, fur, or gradual contours.

Alt-click on Windows or Option-click on macOS the mask thumbnail to inspect the mask itself. White areas should correspond to the object; black areas should correspond to protected regions. Adobe explains this mask behavior in its guide to targeting adjustment layers with masks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Check edges, lighting, and reflections

Inspect the result at 100% and at fit-to-screen size. Check the object’s outline, contact shadows, reflections, highlights, transparent areas, and overlaps with other objects.

Do not automatically recolor every reflection. A reflection may show the surrounding environment rather than the object’s base material. Keeping some original highlights and reflected colors often makes a shirt, car, or glossy product look more realistic.

8. Save the editable version

Save a layered PSD or PSB if you may need to revise the edit. Export a JPEG, PNG, or other delivery format only after the adjustment is complete. Adjustment layers preserve the original pixel data and can be edited later; direct pixel adjustments do not offer the same flexibility.

For realistic product recoloring: Solid Color plus Color blend mode

Hue/Saturation is the best general starting point, but a product photograph or a dramatic color replacement may benefit from a more controlled setup:

  1. Select the object.
  2. Create a group in the Layers panel.
  3. With the selection still active, add the selection as a mask on the group.
  4. Inside the group, choose Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer > Solid Color.
  5. Choose the target color.
  6. Set the Solid Color layer’s blending mode to Color.
  7. Add a Levels or Curves adjustment layer below the color layer.
  8. Use Levels or Curves to restore brightness, contrast, and visible surface texture.
  9. Clean up the group mask and reduce the color layer’s opacity if necessary.

The Color blend mode applies the replacement color’s hue and saturation while retaining much of the underlying brightness structure. That allows folds, shadows, highlights, and texture to remain visible instead of being covered by a flat opaque fill. Adobe demonstrates this approach in its product-color replacement tutorial.

Use Hue blending mode instead when you mainly want to change hue while preserving the object’s existing contrast and saturation. Use Normal blending mode only when a deliberately flat graphic effect is intended.

Other ways to replace a color

Color Range

Color Range is useful when the target is made up of a distinctive, repeated color. Choose the target layer, open the mask controls, select Color Range, choose Sampled Colors, and click the color with the eyedropper. Adjust Fuzziness to control how broadly similar colors are included.

This method selects color similarity, not object identity. If a red shirt and a red sign appear in the same image, Color Range may select both. Inspect and paint on the resulting mask before applying the recolor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace Color

The legacy Image > Adjustments > Replace Color command can be convenient for a quick global change. Sample the color, adjust Fuzziness, and set the replacement Hue, Saturation, and Lightness.

Its disadvantages are important: it can affect every matching color in the image, offers less convenient mask refinement than an adjustment layer, and may directly alter the image layer. Availability and exact behavior can vary in current releases, so for editable work a masked Hue/Saturation layer is usually safer. Adobe’s detailed reference is available in its archived Photoshop reference.

Contextual Task Bar: Adjust Colors

Some current Photoshop desktop releases provide an Adjust Colors option in the Contextual Task Bar. It can detect prominent colors, offer color choices, and create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer with eyedropper and Color Range refinement.

This feature depends on the Photoshop release, workspace, document state, and enabled contextual controls. If you do not see it, use the standard Adjustments panel workflow. The conventional selection-and-mask method remains the more dependable skill to learn.

Common problems and fixes

The whole image changes

The adjustment may have been created without an active selection, leaving an entirely white mask. Undo and recreate the adjustment with the object selected, or paint black on the mask outside the object.

If the adjustment should affect only the layer directly beneath it, use a clipping mask. For several color layers, place them in a group and apply one mask to the group.

The new color looks muddy

The original hue may still be influencing the result, or the target color may be too different for a simple hue shift. Try Colorize, then adjust Saturation carefully. For a more consistent result, use a Solid Color fill in Color mode and correct brightness with Levels or Curves.

Increasing Saturation indefinitely rarely solves the problem. Mixed lighting, colored reflections, and dark shadows may require separate masks or additional adjustments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The object loses texture

A Solid Color layer in Normal mode can cover the original pixels. Change it to Color blending mode, preserve the original image below, and use Levels or Curves to tune brightness. Keep Hue/Saturation Lightness near 0 initially.

The edges look harsh or show halos

Paint on the mask with a softer brush, lower the brush opacity or flow, and inspect the edge against both light and dark backgrounds. For a clean hard edge, use the Pen tool or refine the selection before creating the adjustment. A small amount of feathering can help, but too much creates a visible blur.

The background changes too

The selection may include background pixels, especially around hair, gaps, handles, and transparent areas. Paint black on the adjustment mask over those areas. For repeated background colors, avoid relying on Color Range alone because it may select matching pixels outside the object.

Highlights and reflections remain the old color

This can be correct for a realistic result. Highlights often carry information about the light source, while reflections may belong to the surrounding environment. If the object must have a uniform graphic color, use Colorize or create a separate mask for the highlights. If realism is the goal, retain some of the original variation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The object contains several materials or colors

One adjustment layer may not be enough for patterns, logos, dark shadows, bright highlights, and multiple surfaces. Use separate adjustment layers with separate masks for the base material and distinctive details.

The document is grayscale

Choose Image > Mode > RGB Color before applying a colorization workflow. Adobe documents this requirement in its guide to colorizing grayscale images.

The exported or printed color looks different

An uncalibrated monitor, different color profiles, and color-managed versus non-color-managed applications can all change how the result appears. For color-critical work, use a calibrated, profiled monitor, confirm the document profile, and soft-proof before printing. Check the exported file in a color-managed viewer.

Which Photoshop color-changing method should you use?

Situation Recommended method Main advantage Main risk
Simple object with clear edges Object Selection plus Hue/Saturation Fast and editable Missed edges or spillover
Small hue shift Hue/Saturation Natural-looking adjustment Original color may contaminate the result
Dramatic color replacement Solid Color plus Color mode Strong, consistent color May need separate brightness correction
Product photography Masked group, Solid Color, and Levels Preserves texture and shading Requires more setup
Object defined by one repeated color Color Range Efficient across separated areas May select matching colors elsewhere
Quick one-off global edit Replace Color Convenient dialog Less flexible and potentially destructive
Precise hard-edged product Pen tool plus adjustment layer Clean, controlled mask Slower
Hair, fur, or translucent material Object or Quick Selection plus mask refinement Better control over soft edges Needs careful cleanup and reduced opacity

Final checklist for a believable recolor

  • The original image layer remains untouched.
  • The adjustment layer has a mask limited to the intended object.
  • Hue and Saturation are set for the desired color without oversaturating it.
  • Lightness was not pushed so far that the object lost its natural volume.
  • Shadows, highlights, folds, and texture remain visible.
  • Background pixels, logos, hardware, and reflections were checked separately.
  • The result looks convincing both at 100% and at normal viewing size.
  • The editable version is saved as PSD or PSB.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change the color of a shirt in Photoshop?

Select the shirt with Object Selection or Quick Selection, create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, adjust Hue and Saturation, and refine the mask around the sleeves, collar, gaps, and folds. Use Colorize if the original fabric color continues to tint the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I recolor a car without losing reflections?

Use a masked Solid Color fill layer set to Color blending mode, then use Levels or Curves to tune brightness. Keep some original highlights and environmental reflections because they help preserve the car’s glossy appearance.

How do I change black to a bright color?

A hue shift alone cannot create bright color from very dark pixels. Use a masked Solid Color layer in Color mode, then raise brightness and contrast with Levels or Curves while preserving the original shadows.

Is Hue/Saturation better than Replace Color?

For editable object-specific work, usually yes: a masked Hue/Saturation adjustment layer is non-destructive and easier to refine. Replace Color is convenient for quick global changes but can affect every matching color and is less flexible.

Can I change an object’s color without affecting the background?

Yes. Create the adjustment layer with the object selected, then inspect its mask. Paint black over any background spill and use a clipping mask or masked group when the adjustment must be tightly contained.

Can I do this in Photoshop on the web or mobile?

Some color and object-editing features are available outside desktop Photoshop, but complex masks, layered product recoloring, blend modes, and precision retouching are generally better suited to the desktop application. Labels and available controls vary by edition and release.
