Yes—Google restored Gemini’s ability to generate images of people in August 2024. The capability remains available in 2026, but it is no longer primarily associated with the Imagen model used during the original controversy. Google’s current image-generation guidance points users toward its Nano Banana family: Nano Banana 2, Nano Banana 2 Lite, and Nano Banana Pro.
The restoration did not mean that every people-related prompt would be accepted, or that historically accurate representation had been solved. Availability and results still depend on the product, model, region, account, age, prompt, and safety filters.

What happened in February 2024?
On February 23, 2024, Google paused Gemini’s ability to generate images of people after users and journalists highlighted historically inaccurate and overcorrected results. Google said its diversity tuning had “overcompensated” in some cases and that the system had also become too cautious, refusing some harmless requests.
Two different problems were involved:
- Inappropriate diversification: a generic request can reasonably produce a range of people, but a historically constrained request may require a specific identity, culture, or demographic context. Changing those details can make the image factually wrong.
- Overbroad refusals: the model sometimes treated benign references to race, nationality, religion, or historical figures as unsafe when they were not.
The controversy is often reduced to the claim that Google simply refused to depict white people. That is too broad. Associated Press reporting noted that researchers challenged that interpretation and pointed out that image generators have historically overrepresented lighter-skinned men in many generic prompts.
The underlying design problem was more specific: a general representation behavior was applied to prompts where historical identity and factual fidelity were part of the request.
What exactly did Google pause?
Google paused Gemini’s image generation of people. It did not shut down every Google image-generation system or all image generation across Google’s products.
At the time, the Gemini conversational app was a separate product from Google Search and other underlying AI systems, and the feature used Imagen 2. That distinction matters because the Gemini consumer app, Gemini API, Google AI Studio, Vertex AI, Imagen versions, and later native Gemini image models have not necessarily offered identical controls or policies.
So “Google shut down AI image generation” is inaccurate without naming the product and capability. The narrower statement is that Google temporarily disabled human-image generation in Gemini.

When did human-image generation return?
Google announced the return on August 28, 2024, alongside the addition of Imagen 3 to Gemini. The rollout was gradual and initially restricted. Contemporary reporting described limits including no photorealistic images of people, no children, no identifiable individuals, and restrictions intended to reduce excessively gory, violent, or sexual imagery. Availability was also initially limited by language and Gemini account tier. Axios reported the initial relaunch conditions.
Those were relaunch restrictions, not a guarantee that every rule remains unchanged in 2026. Current behavior can vary by product, account, country, age, prompt, and safety classifier.
What does Gemini use now?
Google’s current developer documentation no longer presents Imagen as the main path for new image-generation work. It lists Imagen as deprecated and scheduled for shutdown on August 17, 2026, while recommending the Nano Banana family. Because the current date is after that scheduled date, developers should treat Nano Banana as the forward-looking option, while allowing for documentation and migration behavior to lag across individual products.

Google describes later Gemini image systems as supporting multi-image fusion, natural-language local edits, improved character consistency, broader world knowledge, and combined image understanding and generation. Those are capability improvements; they are not proof that the models are reliably accurate for every historical, cultural, racial, or political subject. Google’s Nano Banana announcement also says generated and edited images include an invisible SynthID watermark.
Can Gemini generate images of human beings now?
Yes, in the broad sense. Google’s current Gemini help documentation explicitly covers creating images of people, avatars, and images based on Google Photos subjects. Users can also upload one or more reference images for editing and transformation.
That does not mean every request will succeed. A result may be blocked or altered when the prompt involves an identifiable real person, a minor, sexual or violent content, impersonation, or a potentially misleading depiction of a real event.

SynthID can help identify that an image was generated or edited by Google’s system. It is a provenance aid—not a fact-checker, authenticity guarantee, or proof that the depicted event actually happened.
How to generate or edit an image in Gemini
Google’s current desktop path is:
- Go to gemini.google.com.
- Open the sidebar and select Images.
- Choose a template or enter a prompt.
- Generate the image with Nano Banana 2.
To edit an image, open Gemini, select Library in the sidebar, choose an image, click Chat, and enter an editing instruction. You can also upload an image or several images as references.
For users with access to Nano Banana Pro, Google’s help instructions say to generate an image with Nano Banana 2 or Nano Banana 2 Lite, select More, and choose Redo with Pro.
Feature access is date- and region-sensitive. Google says image editing is unavailable to users under 18. Google Photos-connected image creation has additional age and regional limits, including an 18-and-over restriction in the United States.

It can create a historical-looking image, but that is not the same as producing a reliable historical document.
Generative models may invent or combine details such as clothing, weapons, architecture, uniforms, writing materials, racial demographics, or camera technology. A visually convincing result can therefore be anachronistic. Current Google materials describe stronger world knowledge and image reasoning, but the cited documentation does not establish that Nano Banana has eliminated historical inaccuracies or demographic bias.

For a painting reference, concept sketch, or explicitly fictional illustration, that distinction may be acceptable. For journalism, museum education, historical reconstruction, or documentary work, independently verify every material claim.
A useful prompt makes the status of the image explicit:

Use historically appropriate architecture, clothing, furniture, and writing materials. Do not depict it as a real photograph or claim that the people shown are identifiable historical figures.
Specify the date, location, relevant historical identity, clothing and material culture, visual style, and whether the image is fictional, illustrative, or documentary. Asking the model not to invent factual claims can improve the instruction, but it cannot replace source checking.
What remains restricted?
Expect product-specific safety controls around:
- Identifiable real people and public figures
- Children and other minors
- Sexualized or violent imagery
- Deepfakes, impersonation, or identity-altering edits
- Misleading documentary-style scenes
- User-uploaded photographs used outside an appropriate context
Even a benign artistic request may behave differently in the Gemini app, AI Studio, the Gemini API, and Vertex AI. Model availability, account tier, age, geography, and wording all matter.

API models and pricing
These are API prices, not the cost of a consumer Gemini subscription. Google’s pricing documentation checked on August 18, 2026 listed the following approximate standard image-output costs:
- Nano Banana 2: about $0.045 for 512px, $0.067 for 1K, $0.101 for 2K, and $0.151 for 4K images.
- Nano Banana 2 Lite: about $0.0336 for a 1K image; batch output was listed at approximately $0.0168 per 1K image.
- Nano Banana Pro: about $0.134 for a 1K or 2K image and $0.24 for a 4K image.
Check the current pricing page before budgeting. Token rates, model names, output sizes, and availability can change.
How to evaluate the feature responsibly
If you are choosing a model for painting references, editorial illustration, education, or software, evaluate more than whether it can produce an attractive face. Build a small test set containing:
- Generic people prompts
- Explicit racial, national, or religious identities
- Historically constrained scenes
- Public figures and recognizable real people
- Minors and age-sensitive requests
- Real-person editing and identity preservation
- Multi-image character consistency
- Text-heavy posters or infographics
Record the model name, product, date, region, account tier, prompt, refusal message, and output. Compare whether the system follows the requested identity without inserting anachronisms, whether it refuses benign requests consistently, and whether repeated edits preserve the person or character.

For historical work, have a subject-matter expert or reliable primary source review the result. Do not use a generated image alone as evidence that a person, place, garment, event, or demographic pattern existed as shown.
The bottom line
Google did restore Gemini’s human-image generation—but the restoration happened on August 28, 2024, not as a new August 2026 event. In 2026, Google’s preferred image-generation path is the Nano Banana family rather than Imagen.
The original controversy exposed a real product-design failure: diversity tuning, historical prompt fidelity, and safety refusals were not being handled distinctly enough. Newer models may offer better editing, consistency, text rendering, and contextual understanding, but neither model upgrades nor SynthID watermarking proves historical accuracy. Use Gemini for clearly labeled creative work, and treat historically or journalistically significant images as claims that require independent verification.
