Adobe’s April 24, 2025 Firefly announcement was a platform overhaul, not just a better image generator. Image Model 4 and Image Model 4 Ultra led the release, but the larger change was Firefly’s shift toward a unified creative AI hub that also offered models from OpenAI, Google, and Black Forest Labs, alongside video generation, collaborative moodboarding, Creative Cloud integration, and provenance tools.
The short version
- Image Model 4 introduced Adobe’s faster, more controllable image-generation system of that period, with launch support for outputs up to 2K.
- Image Model 4 Ultra targeted demanding compositions with dense detail, small structures, and greater realism.
- Firefly added access to selected third-party models, including OpenAI image generation, Google Imagen 3, Google Veo 2, and Flux 1.1 Pro.
- Firefly Video Model became generally available, with text-to-video and image-to-video generation up to 1080p at launch.
- Firefly Boards introduced a collaborative surface for moodboards, storyboards, remixing, and visual exploration.
- Adobe’s commercially safe positioning primarily concerns its own Firefly models—not automatically every partner model available through the interface.
As of August 2026, Image Model 4 is no longer Adobe’s newest Firefly image model. It remains important because it marked the strategic change that reshaped Firefly from an Adobe-model destination into a broader model-selection and production platform.
Adobe’s April 2025 announcement described the redesigned Firefly experience as a unified destination for ideation, creation, and production.

Announced at Adobe MAX London, the release changed Firefly at several levels simultaneously:

- Model layer: Adobe launched Image Model 4 and Image Model 4 Ultra.
- Platform layer: The Firefly web experience was redesigned to bring multiple models into one environment.
- Media layer: Adobe presented Firefly as a place for image, video, audio, vector, and design workflows.
- Workflow layer: Firefly was connected to applications including Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Adobe Express, and Illustrator.
- Collaboration layer: Firefly Boards provided a space for shared visual development.
- Trust layer: Content Credentials identified whether generated content came from an Adobe or partner model.
The significance was commercial as well as technical. Adobe could remain the interface, workflow, billing, administration, and distribution layer even when the underlying generative model came from another company.
Image Model 4 versus Image Model 4 Ultra
Adobe characterized Image Model 4 as its fastest, most controllable, and most realistic Firefly image model at launch. Those are Adobe’s launch-period claims, not independent rankings.
| Model | Intended role | What Adobe emphasized |
|---|---|---|
| Image Model 4 | General-purpose generation and rapid ideation | More lifelike results, faster iteration, structural and stylistic control, camera-angle and zoom controls, improved complex-scene handling, and image output up to 2K |
| Image Model 4 Ultra | More demanding compositions | Higher detail and realism for scenes containing small structures, intricate elements, or dense visual information |
Ultra should not be understood as universally superior in every workflow. Image Model 4 was the more natural choice for general exploration and repeated iteration, while Ultra was aimed at compositions where fine detail and scene complexity mattered more.
The launch specification of “up to 2K” does not mean every aspect ratio, plan, or workflow automatically produced native 2K output. Nor does it guarantee print-ready results without checking the final dimensions, artifacts, and intended use.
Adobe highlighted improvements in realism, speed, structure, style, camera angle, zoom, and text rendering. TechCrunch’s launch coverage likewise described Ultra as intended for more complex and detailed compositions.
Firefly became a model hub
At launch, Adobe made the following partner models or capabilities available:
| Model or provider | April 2025 status | Why a user might choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Image Model 4 | Available | Adobe-native image generation and control |
| Adobe Image Model 4 Ultra | Available | Dense detail and complex scenes |
| OpenAI image generation | Available | An alternative image-generation style and behavior |
| Google Imagen 3 | Available | An alternative image model within the Adobe workflow |
| Google Veo 2 | Available | Partner video generation |
| Flux 1.1 Pro | Available | An alternative image aesthetic and model family |
| fal.ai, Ideogram, Luma, Pika, Runway | Announced for later rollout | Additional image and video specialization |
This distinction matters. The April announcement did not make every model later named by Adobe part of the launch lineup. In June 2025, Adobe announced a broader ecosystem including Ideogram 3.0, Luma’s Ray2, Pika 2.2, Runway Gen-4 Image, Flux.1 Kontext, Google Imagen 4, and Google Veo 3. See Adobe’s June announcement for that later expansion.

What model choice changes in practice
A model picker can reduce the need to maintain several separate accounts. A designer can compare visual approaches in one Adobe environment, then move a result into Photoshop or Express. A video team can explore generation before continuing work in Premiere Pro. Agencies may also benefit from centralized access and administration.
But the models are not interchangeable. They can differ in realism, typography, editing behavior, consistency, latency, controls, output limits, credit costs, terms, and commercial-use policies. The best model depends on the task—not simply on which model is newest or most expensive.
Firefly Boards was the ideation layer
Firefly Boards launched as a public beta for moodboarding, storyboarding, brainstorming, and exploring many visual variations. Users could generate, import, remix, and organize concepts before moving into production.
That positioned Boards closer to an AI-assisted visual workspace than a finished production editor. Its value was the transition from loose references to shared direction: a team could gather images, generate alternatives, compare visual treatments, and develop a concept in one place.
TechCrunch compared the concept with other AI ideation boards, while noting Adobe’s advantage in connecting the experience to its established creative applications.
Video made the announcement broader than image generation
Adobe also made Firefly Video Model generally available. At launch it supported text-to-video and image-to-video generation up to 1080p, along with camera controls, atmospheric effects, custom motion-design elements, and start- and end-frame controls.
That matters because Adobe was not merely competing in text-to-image generation. It was positioning Firefly as a multimodal creative-production platform: a place to develop stills, motion concepts, design elements, and other media before refining them in Creative Cloud tools.

- Move Beyond the Mouse: Huion Inspiroy H640P is a pen tablet that replaces your mouse for more natural, precise control. Freehand draw, take notes, or even play OSU—everything you do with a mouse, you can do better with a pen. The precise tip makes it ideal for detailed photo editing, graphic design, or signing PDF. Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.
The launch capabilities did not eliminate the practical video challenges of clip consistency, shot-to-shot continuity, predictable motion, generation cost, and post-production. Video teams still need to assess whether Adobe’s native model or a partner model better fits a particular project.
Commercial safety, partner models, and Content Credentials
Adobe describes its own Firefly models as commercially safe or production-ready, and says its approach is based on respecting creators’ rights. That is Adobe’s product and legal positioning—not a universal guarantee that every generated output is risk-free.
The distinction becomes essential when selecting a partner model. A model available inside Firefly is not automatically an Adobe Firefly model, and access through Adobe does not automatically extend Adobe’s Firefly-specific commercial assurances to that model.
Adobe’s current generative-AI product-specific terms treat non-Adobe models as third-party services. Those models may be modified or discontinued, and their applicable terms and risk considerations remain relevant. Adobe’s output-indemnification provisions are limited to eligible business or enterprise plans and specified Firefly features; they are not a blanket promise covering every customer, model, or use case.
What Content Credentials do—and do not do
Adobe said Content Credentials would be automatically attached to AI-generated content to identify whether an Adobe or partner model was used. This can improve provenance and transparency for clients, collaborators, and downstream viewers.
Recommended Free Tools
Content Credentials are not proof of originality, ownership, legal clearance, factual accuracy, or freedom from resemblance to existing work. They are provenance metadata, not a substitute for rights review, client approvals, or model-specific legal analysis.
Why Creative Cloud integration matters
For existing Adobe users, Firefly’s strongest advantage is not necessarily that it generates better pixels than every competing service. It is the path from generation to production.

- Photoshop: Generated material can become part of a broader compositing, retouching, masking, and layout workflow.
- Premiere Pro: Generated video concepts can move toward editing and post-production.
- Illustrator: Vector and design workflows can remain within the same ecosystem.
- Adobe Express: Marketers and social teams can turn generated concepts into lightweight campaign assets.
- Firefly Boards: Early-stage exploration can be organized before formal production begins.
This centralization can reduce tool switching and simplify team workflows. It does not guarantee better output, and it may be less attractive to users who want the most advanced native controls, fastest feature access, or strongest community workflow for one specific partner model.

Current-status note: The following reflects Adobe’s US plan pages checked on August 18, 2026. Prices, plan names, credit allocations, model access, and promotions can change.
| Plan | US pricing signal | Credits and notable inclusions |
|---|---|---|
| Firefly Free | Free | Limited daily generations and selected image, video, and audio models |
| Firefly Standard | $9.99/month | 2,000 monthly generative credits; standard image features, with premium features and non-Adobe models consuming credits |
| Firefly Pro | $19.99/month | 4,000 monthly credits, Photoshop on web and mobile, and Adobe Express Premium |
| Firefly Pro Plus | Normally $49.99/month; promotional price shown as $34.97/month | 10,000 monthly credits and broader plan inclusions |
| Firefly Premium | Normally $199.99/month; promotional price shown by Adobe | 50,000 monthly credits and unlimited access to the Firefly Video Model under the listed plan terms |
Adobe’s current pages say premium features—including video generation and non-Adobe models—use generative credits. Some plans also include temporary unlimited-generation offers for selected models. Those offers are not permanent benefits; Adobe’s plan page listed August 26, 2026 as a promotional deadline when checked.
Before subscribing, check whether the selected generation is standard or premium, whether it uses an Adobe or third-party model, whether resolution changes the cost, and whether a promotion still applies. Adobe’s terms also say unused credits do not roll over for the covered add-on subscription.
See Adobe’s current Firefly features and plan details and plan comparison page for the latest terms.
Who benefits most?
Casual image creators
Firefly is attractive if you want an Adobe interface, occasional generation, simple access to several models, and an easy route into Photoshop or Express. The free tier or lower-cost plan may be sufficient, but premium models can consume credits quickly.
Professional designers
Evaluate the actual output at the size you need. Pay particular attention to typography, brand details, reference-image control, structure, camera angle, cropping, recomposition, and the editing work required after generation. Also verify that the model you want is available in the relevant Firefly surface.

Agencies and brands
Check model-specific terms, output-indemnification eligibility, administrative controls, data handling, retention and training policies, provenance requirements, and whether partner models can be enabled or disabled for the organization. A centralized interface is useful only if it meets the client’s compliance and procurement requirements.
Video teams
Assess clip length, resolution, prompt-to-video versus image-to-video needs, camera and frame controls, credit consumption, shot consistency, and compatibility with Premiere Pro. The native Firefly Video Model may be adequate for some production needs, while another partner model may be preferable for a specialized workflow.
Timeline: launch versus later Firefly
- April 24, 2025: Adobe announced Image Model 4, Image Model 4 Ultra, general availability of Firefly Video Model, initial partner models, and Firefly Boards public beta.
- June 17, 2025: Adobe announced an expanded model lineup and Firefly mobile app.
- October 2025 and afterward: Adobe announced later Firefly model generations and a larger partner ecosystem.
Adobe said Firefly models had generated more than 22 billion assets by April 2025 and more than 24 billion by June 2025. Those are Adobe-reported totals, not an independent measurement of quality or production value.

Verdict
Adobe’s important move was not simply making Firefly images more realistic. It changed Firefly’s role from an Adobe-only generator into a controlled marketplace and workflow layer for multiple creative AI models.
That creates real convenience for Creative Cloud users: fewer separate tools, easier movement into Photoshop and Premiere Pro, shared ideation through Boards, and clearer provenance through Content Credentials. It also creates new responsibilities. Model-specific pricing, credit usage, rights, output quality, data policies, and availability matter more than ever.
For Adobe-centered teams, Firefly became substantially more serious as a production platform. For users who need one specialized model, the lowest possible per-image cost, or unrestricted native controls, a direct model provider may still be the better fit.
