To blur the background of a new photo, open Camera > Portrait > Portrait Effects > Blur, adjust the strength, and take the picture. For an existing image, open it in Gallery, swipe up, and choose Background blur if Samsung offers that suggestion. A Live Focus or other depth-enabled photo may instead provide Adjust background blur.
Samsung’s menus and available features vary by Galaxy model and One UI version, so the option may not appear on every device or for every photo.
The quickest method: blur the background while taking a photo
Portrait mode is generally the most predictable Samsung-native way to create a portrait-style, out-of-focus background because the phone separates the subject from the background during capture.

- Open the Camera app.
- Swipe through the shooting modes and tap Portrait. If it is not visible, check More; the camera mode tray may also have been customized.
- Frame your subject.
- Tap the Portrait Effects icon near or below the viewfinder.
- Select Blur.
- Move the blur-strength slider to the desired level.
- Tap the shutter button.
- Tap the thumbnail to review the result in Gallery.
Samsung also lists portrait effects such as Studio, High-Key Mono, Low-Key Mono, Backdrop, and Color Point on some devices, but the names and controls differ by model and software version. See Samsung’s current Portrait and editing instructions for device-specific variation.
Tips for a more natural result
- Leave clear space between the subject and the background.
- Use good, even lighting.
- Check hair, fingers, glasses, foliage, and other fine edges for halos or cutouts.
- Reduce the blur strength if the background looks unnaturally smeared.
- Be especially careful with pets, reflective objects, transparent items, overlapping people, and low-light scenes.
These are general photography techniques rather than guaranteed Samsung requirements. Portrait effects can misidentify complex edges or multiple subjects.
Blur the background of an existing photo in Samsung Gallery
Samsung Gallery may analyze an existing image and offer Background blur as an edit suggestion. This is conditional: the option may be absent because of the image, device, software version, or Samsung’s analysis.

- Open Gallery.
- Select the photo.
- Swipe upward on the image to open its details and available edit suggestions.
- Tap Background blur, if it appears.
- Adjust the blur slider.
- Preview the result and tap the on-screen save or apply control.
- Choose Save copy or Save as copy when available.
On some Galaxy devices, the same suggestions may be reached through a Details icon, commonly shown as an “i,” an AI or Intelligence features icon, or a three-stars icon. The exact entry point is not universal. Samsung’s Gallery editing guide describes the swipe-up route and notes that suggestions vary by image.
Adjust blur on a Live Focus or depth-enabled photo
A photo captured with Live Focus or an equivalent depth-aware mode may retain information that lets Gallery adjust the background after capture.
- Open the image in Gallery.
- Look for Adjust background blur.
- Drag the blur slider left or right.
- If available, choose a blur shape or additional background effect.
- Tap the save icon, preferably using a copy option.
This is different from applying a blur effect to any ordinary image. A compatible portrait capture may contain depth information that a standard flat photo does not. Samsung’s Live Focus documentation describes this adjustment for supported images; newer devices may use different labels.

What to do if Background blur is missing
- Try the swipe-up route: Open the image in Gallery and swipe upward.
- Check alternate controls: Look for Details, AI, Intelligence features, or a three-stars icon rather than only the pencil-shaped editor.
- Check the image type: An ordinary photo may not contain depth information for adjustable blur.
- Try Portrait mode with a new photo: This is usually the most dependable built-in approach when you can retake the image.
- Update the device: Install available system and app updates.
- Check model and One UI support: Galaxy phones with similar names can have different camera and Gallery features.
- Check Galaxy AI requirements: Relevant AI tools may require a supported device, Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later, a Samsung account, and an internet connection.
- Restart Gallery or the phone: This can help if a normally available control disappeared after an update.
- Contact Samsung: Use Samsung Support or Samsung Members if the device should support the feature but it remains unavailable.
Samsung’s documentation says Gallery edit suggestions may not appear at all. Missing Background blur therefore does not necessarily indicate a problem with the photo or the app.
Save the edited photo without losing the original
Save may update or replace the edited version, depending on the tool. Save copy or Save as copy creates a separate image and keeps the original unchanged. Use the copy option whenever you may want to compare versions, undo the effect later, or preserve the source at its original quality.

Samsung Galaxy AI requirements and limitations
Some newer Gallery editing functions are Galaxy AI features rather than traditional camera effects. Samsung says the cited Galaxy AI tools are available only on select Galaxy phones and tablets, with Android 14 and One UI 6.1 or later. Samsung also states that a Samsung account and internet connection are required for the relevant tools.

These qualifications do not automatically apply to every Portrait or standard Gallery edit. For supported Galaxy AI workflows, Samsung says:
- Generative Edit results may be resized to up to 12 megapixels.
- AI-generated images display a Galaxy AI watermark.
- Basic Galaxy AI features are described as free, while enhanced Samsung AI and third-party features may have different terms or fees.
Those details matter if an AI workflow changes more than the background or if you need a particular resolution. Samsung’s Galaxy AI editing support page provides the applicable limitations.

Do not confuse background blur with blur removal
Background blur makes the scene behind a subject look intentionally out of focus. Blur removal does the opposite: it attempts to sharpen or restore an image that was accidentally captured blurry because of camera movement, subject movement, or poor focus.

Samsung describes Galaxy Enhance-X as providing tools such as brightening, sharpening, restoration, and resolution enhancement. Its support material does not establish Enhance-X as a universal way to add portrait-style background blur to any photo. Do not assume that installing it will unlock Background blur for unsupported images.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I blur the background of any Samsung photo?
No. Portrait mode works when taking a new supported photo, while Gallery’s Background blur suggestion is image- and device-dependent. A standard photo may not offer the control.
Can I adjust blur after taking a Portrait photo?
Sometimes. If the image was captured with a compatible depth-aware mode, Gallery may show Adjust background blur. Otherwise, the available editing controls depend on the device and image.
Does Portrait mode work on all Galaxy phones?
