Stable Diffusion works best as part of an art-directed pipeline—not as a prompt box. The most reliable process is: brief or sketch → composition block-in → controlled generation → selective inpainting → detail pass → upscale → manual finishing → saved metadata and rights checks.
Stable Diffusion is a family of image-generation models accessed through interfaces such as ComfyUI, AUTOMATIC1111, InvokeAI, Diffusers, and hosted APIs. Your choice affects privacy, cost, reproducibility, model access, and technical difficulty.

A diffusion model begins with visual noise and progressively denoises it into an image, guided by text and—depending on the workflow—an existing image, sketch, pose map, depth map, edge map, or other control signal.

In practical digital-art work, separate the process into six jobs:
- Generation: create an image from text.
- Transformation: alter an existing image with image-to-image.
- Correction: repair selected regions with inpainting.
- Control: constrain pose, edges, depth, or composition with ControlNet and related tools.
- Personalization: add a LoRA, embedding, or fine-tuned model.
- Finishing: upscale, paint over, composite, color-correct, and typeset in a conventional editor.
A checkpoint usually packages or references the principal generation model, text-encoding components, and a VAE. ComfyUI’s documentation describes these checkpoint, CLIP, VAE, and sampler relationships in its basic workflow.
The interface and the model are different things. ComfyUI, AUTOMATIC1111, InvokeAI, Diffusers, and hosted services may expose similar models through very different controls. “Stable Diffusion” also does not mean that every checkpoint, LoRA, VAE, or service has the same license.
Choose a workflow: local, hosted, or hybrid
Local generation
Use a local workflow when privacy, offline access, repeated experimentation, batch generation, or access to community models matters. You control the files, settings, seeds, and extensions—but you also manage installation, dependencies, storage, security, and licensing.
Stability AI’s self-hosting guidance cites 6 GB of VRAM as a baseline for some deployments. Treat that as a broad minimum, not a promise that every current model, resolution, or ControlNet workflow will run comfortably.
Hosted APIs
Hosted generation is usually the fastest route if you lack a suitable GPU or need an API for an application. The trade-offs are per-image cost, rate limits, provider changes, uploading reference material, and less access to arbitrary community checkpoints.
Stability AI’s platform documents generation, editing, control, and upscaling services. Its pricing information states that one API credit costs US$0.01; the API reference lists SD3.5 Large at 6.5 credits per successful generation—approximately US$0.065 before other applicable workflow costs. Prices and model availability can change, so verify the live pricing page before budgeting.

Hybrid workflows
Many artists use a hosted service for quick ideation, local tools for private references and repeatable production, and Photoshop, Krita, Clip Studio Paint, Affinity Photo, or another editor for final work.
Which interface should you use?

Choose ComfyUI for maximum control and saved workflow graphs. Choose AUTOMATIC1111 for familiar panels and a broad extension ecosystem. Choose Diffusers for code and automation. Choose InvokeAI for a more canvas-oriented local experience. Choose a hosted API when setup friction matters more than arbitrary model access.
Hardware, privacy, and performance
Think in workload categories rather than universal hardware requirements:
- Entry-level local: lower resolutions, batch size one, fewer control modules, and more patience.
- Comfortable creator setup: a modern discrete GPU with meaningful VRAM headroom, SSD storage, and sufficient system RAM.
- High-resolution production: staged upscaling, tiled processing, careful memory management, or occasional cloud/API use.
Parameter count alone does not predict speed or quality. Precision, quantization, resolution, attention implementation, batching, and control modules all affect performance.

Local processing can reduce the need to upload private references, but it does not automatically secure your computer. Hosted services may retain prompts or images according to their terms. Review retention, training, and data-use policies before sending confidential client material.
Your first controlled generation in ComfyUI
This is a version-sensitive path: labels, workflows, model formats, and requirements change. Use the current instructions in the official repository and documentation.
- Install ComfyUI using its current official instructions.
- Obtain a checkpoint from a legitimate source and read its license.
- Place it in the directory expected by the workflow, commonly
ComfyUI/models/checkpoints. - Open ComfyUI and load a compatible official text-to-image workflow.
- Confirm that the checkpoint appears in the model loader.
- Enter positive and, where supported, negative prompts.
- Set a seed and queue the prompt.
- Save the output together with the workflow and generation settings.
A suitable starter prompt is:

Generate modestly sized thumbnails first. Do not upscale an image whose composition is already wrong.

Prompt for art direction, not adjective density
A useful prompt order is:
subject → action or pose → setting → composition → lighting → palette → materials or medium → mood → finishing details

- Must have: one subject, side profile, red coat, snowy forest, wide composition.
- Preferred: gouache texture, muted colors, rim light.
- Optional: drifting snow, birds, distant lanterns.
Describe observable qualities—dry-brush edges, limited palette, flat graphic shadows, atmospheric perspective, paper grain—instead of stacking many style names or contradictory instructions. More words do not automatically produce a better image.
Negative prompts
Use negative prompts for known failure patterns, not as a universal quality filter:
extra fingers, duplicated subject, cropped head, unreadable text, watermark, logo, muddy focal pointIf anatomy or composition remains wrong, a reference image, pose control, inpainting, or a better checkpoint is often more effective than a longer negative prompt.

Image-to-image conditions generation on both a source image and a prompt. This makes it more useful for art direction than text alone.
- Low denoise: preserves more of the source structure and appearance.
- Medium denoise: allows meaningful stylistic or structural change.
- High denoise: approaches a new generation and may lose pose, identity, or composition.
- Import a sketch or rough painting.
- Begin with conservative denoise.
- Generate several variations.
- Increase denoise only when the source remains too dominant.
- Return to a manually corrected intermediate if the result drifts.
There is no universal best denoise value. It depends on the model family, source image, resolution, and the change you want.

Repair images with inpainting
Inpainting is suited to hands, faces, clothing details, background distractions, object replacement, and small compositional extensions.
- Save a copy of the current image.
- Mask only the damaged or replaceable region.
- Feather the mask edge where appropriate.
- Describe the replacement, including perspective and lighting.
- Start conservatively and generate multiple candidates.
- Change the mask size if seams or unwanted changes appear.
- Composite or paint over the best result manually.
Masking too broadly is a common mistake: it can change neighboring anatomy, lighting, or style. Smaller, targeted masks usually provide better control.

Control composition with ControlNet
ControlNet and related systems guide generation with structural signals. The original ControlNet research describes conditioning based on edges, depth, segmentation, human pose, and related controls.
- Canny or line edges: preserve contours and graphic structure.
- Depth: retain approximate spatial arrangement.
- Pose: guide human body position.
- Line art: turn a drawing into a rendered image.
- Scribble or soft edges: preserve loose composition without overconstraining it.
SD3.5 Large ControlNet examples include blur, canny, and depth models. The control model must match the base-model family and supported implementation. Too little control produces unreliable composition; too much can make the image stiff. Reduce control weight or use a softer control source when that happens.

A LoRA is a lightweight adaptation that modifies a compatible base model without replacing the entire checkpoint. It can help with a recurring character, costume, object, narrow visual style, or production-specific look.
Start at lower strength, compare against a no-LoRA baseline, and record the trigger phrase and strength. Watch for:

- Overfitting and artifacts.
- Weak or misleading trigger words.
- Unclear training-data provenance.
- License terms separate from the base model.
A LoRA is not a guarantee of identity consistency. Reference images, fixed seeds during development, controlled denoise, and selective inpainting may still be necessary.

Upscale only after the image works
Upscaling should follow composition approval. Stability AI distinguishes standard and creative upscaling in its platform documentation.
- Conservative upscale: enlarges while minimizing reinterpretation.
- Creative upscale: invents or enhances detail and may alter faces, textures, or boundaries.
- Tiled processing: helps with limited VRAM but can create seams or inconsistent repeated details.
AUTOMATIC1111’s feature documentation describes tiled and img2img-based approaches. After enlargement, inspect hands, eyes, jewelry, edges, repeated patterns, and text.
Finish in a conventional graphics application with paint-over, compositing, color and value correction, texture matching, typography, and final export checks. Generate text as a rough visual placeholder when necessary; typeset exact wording manually.

Make the workflow reproducible
Save the following with every important image:
- Base model and exact version or hash.
- LoRA, VAE, ControlNet, and embedding versions.
- Positive and negative prompts.
- Seed, sampler, scheduler, steps, and guidance scale.
- Width, height, denoise strength, and control weights.
- Input images and masks.
- Workflow JSON or embedded generation metadata.
- Manual edits and final export settings.
A seed alone does not reproduce an image. Changing the model revision, VAE, sampler, resolution, precision, software version, or extension can change the result even when the prompt and seed are identical.
Commercial use, licensing, and rights
The Stability AI Community License permits use of relevant Core Models for research, non-commercial use, and commercial use by individuals or organizations below US$1 million in annual revenue, subject to its terms. Organizations above that threshold are directed toward an Enterprise License. Treat this as a license-specific rule, not a general Stable Diffusion rule.
Before commercial work, check the terms for:
- The base checkpoint.
- Every LoRA, VAE, ControlNet, and embedding.
- Training-data provenance where disclosed.
- The hosted service and its retention policies.
- Reference photographs, sketches, and client assets.
- Distribution of models or derivatives.
- Your client contract and confidentiality obligations.
Open weights do not mean public domain, copyright-free, or commercially unrestricted. Output ownership and output safety are different questions. Copyright treatment depends on jurisdiction, human creative contribution, the nature of the work, and evolving law; do not make categorical ownership claims.
For commercial work, preserve your source sketches, photographs, prompts, workflow records, model licenses, and evidence of human editing. Prefer describing observable visual characteristics rather than asking for close imitation of a living artist. That is an ethical and practical risk, although legal outcomes depend on the jurisdiction and facts.

Final production checklist
- Define the intended use, canvas, focal point, palette, and consistency requirements.
- Choose local, hosted, or hybrid processing based on hardware, privacy, volume, and cost.
- Select a model and verify its license and family compatibility.
- Generate small thumbnails to solve composition.
- Use sketches, references, img2img, or ControlNet when text alone is unreliable.
- Inpaint only the regions that need correction.
- Test LoRAs conservatively and record their provenance and settings.
- Upscale after composition and anatomy are approved.
- Paint over, composite, color-correct, and typeset manually.
- Save prompts, models, hashes, seeds, settings, workflows, source files, and rights records.
