GIMP 3.2.2, released March 28, 2026, was the first maintenance update in the GIMP 3.2 series. It fixed specific problems with filtered layers in groups, vector layers, Multichannel PSD imports, and scaling imported SVG paths. It was not a major feature release—and it has since been superseded by GIMP 3.2.4. If you are installing now, get the latest stable version from GIMP’s official download page.
What GIMP 3.2.2 changed
The update focused on correcting issues found after the wider release of GIMP 3.2.0 on March 14, 2026. That earlier release brought the series’ larger changes, including non-destructive link and vector layers, expanded PSD support, and SVG export. Version 3.2.2 was a bug-fix release for that feature set, not the release that introduced those capabilities. See the 3.2.2 announcement and GIMP 3.2 release notes.
Filtered layers in groups could render incorrectly
The most consequential fix for many working artists concerned certain filtered layers inside layer groups. Under specific conditions, a layer could stop rendering correctly; Drop Shadow is one example of a filter involved in the reported problem. A composition might therefore look incomplete or broken even though, according to the release announcement, the underlying image data had not been lost.

That distinction matters: a rendering failure is not, by itself, evidence that the project’s layer data has been erased. If an older project shows this symptom, make a backup and open a copy in a corrected, current GIMP version. The fix addresses reported conditions; it is not a guarantee that every possible filter or layer-group issue has been eliminated.
Vector layers and SVG path scaling
GIMP 3.2.2 corrected several vector-layer issues and overlooked use cases. Vector layers themselves arrived in GIMP 3.2.0 through the Path tool, where shapes can have adjustable fills and strokes. The 3.2.2 changes were maintenance improvements to that workflow, not the introduction of vector layers.

A separate, more specific fix addressed SVG path import. When importing paths through the Paths dock, the “Scale imported paths to fit image” option did not behave correctly. In 3.2.2, imported path scaling follows the selected preference.
This concerns importing SVG paths—not every way of opening or rendering an SVG, and not SVG export. To check the option, open an image, use the Paths dock’s SVG path import function, and compare the imported path with the image after enabling or disabling the scale-to-fit setting. Dock layout and wording can vary with localization and interface configuration.

PSD import: useful fixes, not full Photoshop compatibility
Version 3.2.2 improved the PSD plug-in in two particular areas:
- It can import all channels in a PSD saved in Multichannel mode.
- It improved import of additional PSD features stored in TIFF and JPEG data, including layers and paths.
These are incremental improvements, not a promise that every Photoshop document will open identically or remain fully editable. PSDs can include constructs whose handling varies in GIMP, such as adjustment layers, smart objects, text, masks, blend modes, effects, and linked or embedded assets. Color mode, compression, and metadata can also affect the result.

For work that matters, leave the original PSD untouched and open a copy. Check the layer count and visibility, masks, text, paths, channels, and overall color appearance. If continuing to edit in GIMP, save a separate XCF. If faithful appearance matters more than editability across applications, a flattened PNG or TIFF may be more predictable—but flattening gives up the separate layers.

The release also made several import plug-ins more robust, including FITS, TIM, PAA, ICNS, PVR, SFW, and JIF. PaintShop Pro import now loads the active selection shape rather than only its rectangular bounds, and the legacy Tile filter handles the original image’s color profile more correctly. The Files menu’s Send by Email feature was enabled in AppImages, and documentation and manual-page generation received updates.

GIMP 3.2.2 dropped 32-bit Windows builds. The release announcement reported that the resulting Windows installer was more than 100 MiB smaller and faster to run. Users on 32-bit Windows should treat this as a compatibility limit, not assume the new installer will work on their system.
The supporting image-processing library GEGL also reached version 0.4.70 alongside GIMP 3.2.2. Its release was primarily for bug fixes, including changes to the GeglPath API and the png-save and exr-save operations, plus build improvements and compiler-warning cleanup. GEGL is a component used by GIMP, not a separate consumer-facing edition of the editor.
Should you upgrade?
If you were using GIMP 3.2.0 and relied on filtered layer groups, vector layers, SVG path imports, Multichannel PSDs, or one of the updated importers, the 3.2.2 fixes were relevant. But there is little reason to install 3.2.2 specifically now: GIMP 3.2.4, released April 19, 2026, is newer. It also corrected a regression associated with a 3.2.2 fix that could leave some text layers uneditable after reloading an XCF file. As of August 18, 2026, 3.2.4 is the newer release identified in the supplied release history; check the official download page for the current stable build.
If you are moving from GIMP 3.0, the bigger decision is the 3.2 feature jump, rather than the narrow 3.2.2 maintenance fixes. Check compatibility for plug-ins and scripts, and test representative projects before changing versions—especially in a production workflow. Users can report reproducible problems through the project’s issue-reporting process referenced in the release notes.

A cautious upgrade checklist
- Duplicate important XCF, PSD, and SVG files before opening or resaving them.
- Install the latest stable GIMP build from the official downloads page, rather than seeking out 3.2.2 as the destination.
- Open copies of representative projects and inspect text, groups, paths, masks, filters, and channels.
- Save to a new file first; keep the original until you have confirmed the result.
