Krita 5.2.5 was released on September 25, 2024, with more than 50 bug fixes since 5.2.3. It improved animation audio, transform masks, layer handling, crashes, exports, and input. However, Krita later identified critical bug 493774 in the release and told users to install 5.2.6 instead. For a new installation today, skip 5.2.5: Krita’s official download page lists 5.3.3, released July 29, 2026, as the current stable desktop release.
What Krita 5.2.5 was
Version 5.2.5 was a maintenance release in the Krita 5.2 series, not a major feature update. Krita described it as containing “over 50 bugfixes since 5.2.3”—a minimum threshold, not an exact count. Version 5.2.4 had been a Windows-specific hotfix, making 5.2.5 the broader follow-up release.
The announcement emphasized major corrections to audio playback and transform-mask calculations, along with reliability improvements across animation, layers, file handling, rendering, and export. See the official 5.2.5 release announcement for the complete technical list.

The most useful fixes
Animation and audio
- Audio playback now responds correctly when an animation’s frame rate changes.
- Several frame-generation problems were corrected.
- A black canvas could appear when “Limit animation frame size” was enabled; that issue was fixed.
- Onion-skin rendering problems involving transform masks were addressed.
Layers, masks, and opening documents
- Krita fixed cases where no layer became active when opening a document, including problems triggered by opening multiple documents.
- Clone-layer and transform-mask behavior was improved, including handling of older transform-mask data.
- Several pass-through-group and transform-related problems were corrected.
Crashes and stability
- A crash when deleting a composition was fixed.
- The Filter Brush no longer crashed in the affected workflow when changing filter types.
- Assertions and possible memory leaks in export and image-processing code were addressed.
- Clipboard pasting was made more robust.
Export and compatibility
- WebP exports now handle color space correctly when dithering is enabled and preserve color profiles for RGB/RGBA files.
- Advanced Export works more reliably with filter masks and layer styles.
- TIFF handling was improved when resolution metadata is zero.
- JPEG XL streaming export and progress reporting were corrected.
- A specific PSD reference-layer compatibility check was improved.
Input and interface
- Unwanted cursor blinking when switching tools with keyboard shortcuts was fixed.
- Conflicts between simultaneous mouse and touch actions were corrected.
- Decimal sliders in the On-Canvas Brush Editor and controls in the Specific Color Selector received fixes to movement, labels, and spin boxes.
- Clipboard and selection behavior when pasting was improved.
Why 5.2.5 is not a safe recommendation now
Krita’s own 5.2.5 announcement carries a prominent warning: the release contains critical bug 493774, and users should download 5.2.6 instead. A later changelog describes 5.2.6 as fixing a critical error involving pass-through group layers.
That warning changes the practical verdict. The fixes in 5.2.5 are historically important, but the build is superseded. Do not install it on a new computer merely because an old article says it contains more than 50 fixes. If you must reproduce a legacy environment, obtain the installer from Krita’s official older-version library, isolate it from your main installation, and keep backups.

Which Krita should you install?
For most readers, install the latest stable build shown on Krita’s official download page: 5.3.3 (July 29, 2026) at the time of writing. The page provides packages for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and store distribution. It currently lists Windows 8.1 or newer, macOS 10.15, at least 4 GB of RAM (16 GB recommended), and OpenGL 3.0 or Direct3D 11 graphics support; these are current-page requirements, not a claim about the original 5.2.5 package. The Microsoft Store build requires Windows 10 or newer.
If a production pipeline must remain on the 5.2 branch, choose a later 5.2 maintenance release rather than 5.2.5 and verify compatibility with your exact operating system, plugins, tablets, and files. Krita’s release history provides the chronology.

Update safely
- Back up working files. Keep copies of important
.kradocuments before opening them in a newer build. - Use the same distribution channel. Update through the official installer, Steam, Microsoft Store, Epic Games Store, Google Play, or Mac App Store used for the original installation.
- Test real work. Check brushes, tablet input, animation audio, transform and pass-through masks, color profiles, and the formats your team exchanges.
- Keep a rollback option. Retain a known-good installer and never overwrite the only copy of a production file.
- Verify downloads when required. Krita publishes signatures and links to older builds; avoid unofficial mirrors and repackaged installers.
A fix for one reported input issue does not guarantee perfect tablet behavior. Windows Ink versus WinTab settings, tablet drivers, Linux compositors, touch hardware, and store packaging can still affect results. Likewise, PSD and other exchange formats may not preserve every Krita-specific layer, mask, or animation feature; .kra remains the safest editable format for Krita work.
Direct download or a store copy?
Krita remains free and open source under the GPLv3-or-later license when downloaded from its website. Store versions are optional paid purchases that mainly provide convenience, automatic updates, and financial support for development. Krita explains this model in its stores update.

- Direct download: best if you want the free build, Linux packages, or more control over version selection.
- Steam or another store: useful if you already manage software there and prefer automatic updates. A purchase on one store does not automatically grant a license on another platform or store.
- Nightly builds: Krita Plus contains fixes on top of the current release; Krita Next is a daily, bleeding-edge testing build. Neither is the normal replacement for 5.2.5.
For desktop painting, any operating-system-compatible graphics tablet can work. Screenless tablets cost less but require hand–eye coordination; pen displays feel more direct but cost more. Compatibility depends on the operating system and driver, not just Krita’s version.

Can I still get Krita 5.2.5?
Krita’s official older-version library may provide historical installers, but 5.2.5 should only be used for controlled legacy testing. New installations should use a later supported release.
Is the paid Steam or Mac App Store version required?
No. Krita’s website offers a free download. Store purchases are optional convenience and support options, with licensing and availability tied to each store and platform.
