GIMP 3.2, announced on March 14, 2026, is a substantial upgrade for editors who want to keep more of their artwork editable. Its headline additions are Vector Layers and Link Layers, joined by clearer rasterization controls, broader non-destructive filter support, improved format handling, and numerous painting and interface refinements. The release does not make every GIMP operation non-destructive, nor does it turn GIMP into a full vector-illustration application. The official release pages surfaced here list GIMP 3.2.4, released April 19, 2026, as a later maintenance build; use the official downloads page to find the appropriate current package for your system.
GIMP 3.2 at a glance
- Vector Layers: editable paths with preserved fill, stroke, and transform information.
- Link Layers: externally referenced images that can be updated when their source changes.
- Rasterize and Revert Rasterize: explicit controls for moving between editable non-raster content and pixel editing.
- More non-destructive filters: support extends to channels and non-raster layers, in addition to ordinary layers and groups.
- Other highlights: Overwrite paint mode, 20 new MyPaint brushes, improved text editing, SVG export, expanded vector PDF export, DDS BC7 export, improved PSD import, and interface refinements.
GIMP 3.2 runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The release ends distribution of 32-bit binaries. Linux users may encounter AppImage, Flatpak, or Snap packages, while distribution repositories can take longer to receive a new version.

What non-destructive editing means in GIMP 3.2
In practical terms, a non-destructive layer keeps its underlying representation instead of immediately baking every change into pixels. A Vector Layer retains its path and appearance settings. A Link Layer retains its relationship to an external file. Text remains editable as text. Transforming these layers can therefore be adjusted later without recreating the original content.
This is layer-level non-destructive editing, not a universal adjustment-layer system. Painting directly on a Vector, Link, or Text Layer, or merging a filter into one, is a destructive operation. GIMP 3.2 makes that boundary explicit: use Layer > Rasterize when you intentionally need pixel editing, and Layer > Revert Rasterize when the operation can be discarded and the editable layer state restored. Save a duplicate before experimenting with rasterization, complex filters, or plug-ins.
Vector Layers: editable shapes inside a GIMP composition
Older GIMP workflows commonly involved creating a path and then stroking or filling it onto a raster layer. Once converted to pixels, changing the geometry or stroke meant rebuilding the result. GIMP 3.2 keeps the path associated with a dedicated Vector Layer.

- Select the Path Tool and draw or edit a path.
- Use the tool’s option to create a path (Vector) layer.
- Set the layer’s fill and stroke, including width, color, pattern, and visibility.
- Transform the layer by scaling, rotating, or otherwise positioning it.
- Edit the underlying path later; the rendered shape updates automatically.
- Rasterize only when you need pixel-level painting or another operation that requires a raster layer.
This workflow is useful for logos, icons, interface mock-ups, geometric overlays, arrows, labels, callouts, and simple illustrations that must be resized repeatedly without losing the editable construction.

A Vector Layer is not a complete vector document. GIMP remains primarily a raster editor: advanced typography, extensive boolean shape operations, multi-page layout, and vector-first illustration may still be better handled in a dedicated application such as Inkscape. A Vector Layer preserves vector information within a GIMP image; the final composition is still constrained by its raster canvas and export settings.
Link Layers: keep an external asset connected
A Link Layer incorporates an image while keeping the source outside the GIMP project. The release notes demonstrate the idea with an SVG logo edited in Inkscape: changes made to the external SVG can appear in the GIMP composition after the linked content is reloaded or updated according to its link behavior.

- Choose File > Open as Link Layer….
- Select the external image and compose it in GIMP.
- Transform or filter the linked layer without importing a separate, baked copy.
- Edit the source in its original application, then reload or update the link in GIMP.
- To change the source, open the layer’s attributes by double-clicking it in the layer dock or choosing Layer > Edit Layer Attributes….
Link Layers are similar in concept to linked smart objects, but they are not a self-contained archive of every asset. Moving or renaming the source, changing operating-system paths, missing permissions, cloud-sync delays, or sending the project without its source files can break the relationship. Keep linked files in a stable project directory and include them when sharing or archiving a composition. Source-format changes can also alter how an asset renders.
Rasterizing a Link Layer enables destructive pixel edits but removes the editable link relationship unless the rasterization can be successfully reverted. Maintain an untouched duplicate when the external connection matters.

GIMP 3.2 extends non-destructive filters to channels and allows them on non-raster layers such as Vector and Link Layers. You can keep a filter live, toggle its visibility, or adjust its parameters without immediately changing the underlying source. Merging the filter into a non-raster layer requires rasterization, so distinguish between applying a live filter and baking it into pixels.

For developers and plug-in authors, the new GEGL Filter Browser exposes filter names, parameters, data types, and descriptions. It is a practical reference for scripts and plug-ins, but it does not guarantee that every third-party extension has been updated for GIMP 3.x.
Other notable changes
- Overwrite paint mode: replaces color values without alpha blending. GIMP recommends it with the Pencil Tool for pixel-art work.
- MyPaint Brush: 20 new brushes, with behavior that responds automatically to canvas zoom and rotation.
- Text editing: the on-canvas editor can be moved, supports more familiar keyboard shortcuts, and Text Outline gains additional direction controls.
- File formats: SVG export is enabled by the vector workflow; PDF export gains expanded vector options; DDS BC7 export is added; PSD import receives more layer-style support and improvements for large images and PSB-related workflows. These features do not promise perfect round trips with every other application.
- Interface: system color-scheme support, image-tab drag-and-drop, and keyboard shortcuts for Shear and Flip.
- Color management: the CMYK color selector displays Total Ink Coverage, useful when checking a printer’s ink-coverage limit. This alone does not make GIMP a complete prepress replacement.
Is GIMP 3.2 a Photoshop or Illustrator replacement?
It depends on the job. GIMP 3.2 is a stronger free and open-source raster editor for mixed photo, text, path, and linked-asset compositions. Vector and Link Layers preserve more source information than older raster-only workflows, and the safeguards make accidental flattening less likely.
It is not equivalent to every Photoshop Smart Object, adjustment-layer, collaboration, color, or plug-in workflow, and Link Layers should not be described as identical to Smart Objects. It is also not a replacement for a full vector-design application when you need sophisticated illustration, typography, boolean construction, or page layout. Commercial tools such as Photoshop or Affinity may fit established production pipelines better; Inkscape complements GIMP when SVG authoring is the priority.

Should you upgrade?
- Existing GIMP 3.x users: upgrade is especially compelling if you regularly resize logos, maintain editable shapes, or reuse externally managed assets.
- GIMP 2.x users: the new layer model is a meaningful workflow change, but test representative files and plug-ins before switching your only production installation.
- Plug-in- or script-heavy users: check GIMP 3.x API support and test on copies. Compatibility is not universal.
- Linux users: compare your distribution package with the official AppImage, Flatpak, or Snap options; repository versions may lag.
- 32-bit systems: GIMP 3.2 does not distribute 32-bit binaries, so verify that your hardware and operating system support a 64-bit build.
Back up important XCF files and linked source assets before opening and resaving them in a new major version. GIMP 3.2.2 addressed serious rendering and vector-layer problems, and the surfaced 3.2.4 maintenance release added further fixes involving non-raster layers, OpenRaster behavior, scripting APIs, and Windows scanner support. That history is a reason to prefer the current maintenance build offered for your platform rather than the original 3.2.0 installer.
Download safely
Use gimp.org/downloads, not an unrelated download portal. Select the latest stable 3.2-series package shown for Windows, macOS, or Linux. Store submissions and distribution repositories can lag behind the project website, so package numbers may differ by operating system. Keep your original installer and a backup of production files until your plug-ins, scripts, fonts, and linked assets have been checked.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does GIMP 3.2 make every edit non-destructive?
No. Vector, Link, and Text Layers preserve editable source information, and more filters can remain live, but painting, merging filters, and other pixel operations still require intentional rasterization.
Will a Link Layer work if I send only the XCF file?
Not reliably. The source remains an external dependency, so include the linked files and preserve usable paths when moving or sharing a project.
Can GIMP 3.2 replace Inkscape for vector design?
Usually not. Vector Layers are valuable for editable shapes inside raster compositions, while Inkscape remains better suited to vector-first illustration and SVG authoring.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: GIMP 3.2 is a meaningful upgrade when your work benefits from editable paths, linked assets, and safer non-destructive layer handling. Install the current 3.2-series maintenance build, keep backups, and treat Vector and Link Layers as powerful additions to a raster editor—not as a complete replacement for dedicated vector or commercial production software.
