Karbon is a real, currently distributed vector-drawing application for Linux and part of KDE’s Calligra suite. It is free software under the GPL-2.0-or-later license, with tools for paths, shapes, layers, snapping, gradients, patterns, text-on-path, Boolean operations, and export to formats such as SVG, PNG, PDF, and WMF. KDE lists version 26.04.3, released July 2, 2026.
Karbon is a sensible choice for Linux users who want a local, open-source editor integrated with Calligra. It is less compelling if you need a Windows- or macOS-first workflow, cloud collaboration, a large commercial plugin ecosystem, or guaranteed fidelity with proprietary production files.
What is Karbon?
Karbon is a vector graphics editor developed as part of the KDE Calligra office and graphics suite. It uses KDE and Qt technologies and can work alongside other Calligra applications. Older documentation sometimes calls it Karbon14; current KDE pages use Karbon.
Unlike a raster painting application, Karbon builds artwork from paths, shapes, fills, strokes, and text. That makes it suitable for logos, icons, diagrams, clip art, illustrations, and other artwork that needs to scale without becoming pixelated. Calligra also describes it as suitable for complex or “photorealistic” vector compositions; that does not mean it is a pixel-based photo-retouching tool.

KDE Applications: Karbon · Calligra: Karbon
Is Karbon still maintained in 2026?
Yes, but the useful qualification is that its development appears conservative rather than fast-moving. KDE’s release history lists Karbon in the current Calligra stream, including 26.04.3 on July 2, 2026, after 26.04.2 on June 4 and 26.04.0 on April 16. Calligra 4.0.0, which moved the suite to Qt 6 and KDE Frameworks 6, was released on August 27, 2024.
The same KDE information indicates that Karbon saw little change beyond work required by the broader Calligra transition. In practical terms, Karbon is not abandoned: it remains shipped and buildable. However, the evidence does not support describing it as one of KDE’s most aggressively evolving applications or promising frequent Karbon-specific feature releases.
These version details are time-sensitive. They describe the release list available on August 18, 2026; later releases may supersede them.
What can you do with Karbon?
- Create simple and moderately complex logos and icons.
- Draw SVG illustrations, clip art, and reusable vector artwork.
- Build diagrams and presentation graphics with geometric shapes and snapping.
- Edit existing SVG or ODG documents.
- Prepare vector artwork for PDF or PNG delivery.
- Keep vector elements inside a Calligra-oriented document workflow.
Karbon is best viewed as a general-purpose desktop vector editor. It has many capabilities associated with professional software, but feature overlap alone does not establish parity with Illustrator, CorelDRAW, specialist prepress tools, or CAD applications.
Main features
Paths, shapes, and text
Drawing tools include freehand paths, pencil and calligraphy tools, advanced node and curve editing, and predefined shapes such as stars, circles, ellipses, rectangles, and images. Artistic text can follow a path, which is useful for badges, labels, curved titles, and logos.

Fills and strokes can use gradients and patterns. Boolean set operations help combine, subtract, or intersect shapes. Additional documented path operations include flattening, rounding, refining, whirl, and pinch effects.
The Tool Desk

Karbon can snap to grids, guide lines, path nodes, bounding boxes, orthogonal positions, intersections, and extensions of lines or paths. This is particularly useful when constructing icons, diagrams, geometric illustrations, and aligned layouts. Snapping should not be confused with the full constraint and measurement systems found in specialist technical-illustration or CAD software.
Layers and workspace organization
The interface includes customizable toolbars and movable dockers. A layer docker provides visibility and locking controls, preview thumbnails, and drag-and-drop grouping of shapes. Layers become important once an illustration contains background elements, repeated objects, text, and separate construction parts.
Plugins
Karbon documents a plugin mechanism for adding tools, shapes, and dockers. That confirms extensibility, but it does not demonstrate a large or actively maintained third-party marketplace comparable with commercial design ecosystems.
Supported file formats
KDE’s feature list separates formats Karbon can load from formats it can write:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Operation | Formats listed by KDE |
|---|---|
| Load/import | ODG, SVG, WPG, WMF, EPS/PS |
| Write/export | ODG, SVG, PNG, PDF, WMF |
Format support is not a guarantee of perfect round-trip fidelity. Imported files can contain features that do not map cleanly to Karbon’s internal model. Pay particular attention to SVG filters, masks, clipping, font substitution, text-on-path, EPS/PostScript objects, WMF or WPG legacy content, and application-specific metadata.

PDF is usually a delivery format, not necessarily the best editable master. Keep an editable working copy before exporting or overwriting a source document.
How to install Karbon
Linux
Karbon is primarily a Linux application. The KDE Applications page points users to Discover or another AppStream-compatible software store, while Calligra’s download page says the suite is available in most Linux distributions through their package managers or software centers. Some distributions expose individual Calligra components; others install a broader Calligra package.
Search your distribution’s software store for Karbon or Calligra. Package names and modularity vary by distribution, so an apparent absence of a separate Karbon package does not necessarily mean the application is unavailable.
Flatpak
Flathub lists org.kde.calligra, the Calligra suite, rather than clearly identifying a Karbon-only bundle. The listing describes free Linux desktop software for x86_64 and aarch64 and showed approximately 51 MiB when retrieved; size and package contents can change. Installing it may provide multiple Calligra applications, not just Karbon.

Windows and macOS
Do not assume that a Linux package implies equivalent support elsewhere. Calligra’s official download page says Windows support is still being developed, and the current KDE Karbon page presents Linux as the installation platform. No equivalent current official macOS distribution was established in the available sources.

A practical beginner workflow
- Launch Karbon from your desktop menu or software store.
- Create a new document and choose a shape, path, pencil, or calligraphy tool.
- Draw the object, then use node and curve editing to refine its geometry.
- Apply fills, strokes, gradients, or patterns.
- Enable snapping when aligning nodes, edges, guides, or intersections.
- Separate complex artwork into logical layers and lock finished elements.
- Save an editable working copy in ODG or another suitable source format.
- Export a copy as SVG, PNG, PDF, or WMF according to its destination.
Toolbar and menu placement can vary with the installed 26.04.x build and desktop configuration, so treat this as a workflow rather than a promise of an identical click path.

- Open the SVG and inspect text, gradients, clipping, masks, filters, and imported objects.
- Use Save As to create a Karbon or ODG working copy instead of immediately replacing the original.
- Edit paths, shapes, layers, and text.
- Export the result to SVG, then reopen it in a browser or the intended downstream editor.
If appearance changes, isolate whether the cause is an unsupported SVG feature, a substituted font, filter or clipping behavior, or text handling. Keeping the untouched original makes recovery straightforward.

Opening files from the command line
An older Ubuntu manpage documents the basic form:
karbon [Qt-options] [KDE-options] [Calligra-options] [file]
Supplying a file path opens that document. Because the reference describes an Ubuntu 3.0.1-era package, it should not be treated as a complete command-line reference for 26.04.x. Check the help output of the installed build before relying on specific options.

Inkscape
Inkscape is the closest mainstream open-source alternative. It is explicitly SVG-centered and has official installation routes for Linux, Windows, and macOS, as well as a larger public documentation and community footprint.
Choose Inkscape when broad platform coverage, SVG-first exchange, and extensive community resources matter more than Calligra integration. Choose Karbon when you prefer a KDE-native, Calligra-oriented document workflow. Neither is universally superior; the file format, operating system, and surrounding workflow decide the practical winner.

Figma
Figma addresses a different problem: browser-based collaborative design. Its strengths include real-time editing, comments, prototypes, shared libraries, and developer handoff. The pricing page viewed on August 18, 2026 showed a free Starter plan and a Professional full seat at $16 per month in the monthly presentation; plans and prices are volatile.

- Advanced Pen Performance: With up to 8192 levels of pressure sensitivity, the PA2 Battery-free Stylus provides you with increased accuracy and enhanced performance to create the finest sketches and lines
Figma is preferable for product-design teams and shared workspaces, not for readers specifically seeking a local Linux-native GPL application or a traditional offline illustration workflow.
Commercial desktop editors
Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, CorelDRAW, and similar products may provide broader commercial ecosystems or specialized production features. Their current pricing, platform availability, and feature parity were not established by the supplied evidence, so they should be evaluated against your exact prepress, color-management, automation, and collaboration requirements rather than assumed to be interchangeable with Karbon.
Who should use Karbon?
Karbon is a good fit if you:
- Use Linux and want a local desktop application.
- Prefer free and open-source software.
- Already use KDE or Calligra.
- Work mainly with SVG, ODG, PDF, PNG, or straightforward legacy vector files.
- Need paths, layers, snapping, shapes, gradients, patterns, or text-on-path.
- Value an interface that can be customized.
Look elsewhere if you need a polished Windows- or macOS-first workflow, cloud collaboration, a large asset or plugin marketplace, guaranteed proprietary-format compatibility, extensive modern tutorials, or verified high-end publishing and color-management features.
Recommended Free Tools
Limitations to plan for
- Linux is the clearly documented primary platform; Windows support remains in development.
- Karbon-specific development appears less prominent than platform-wide Calligra work.
- Current official documentation is much smaller than the documentation ecosystems around larger vector editors.
- The KDE UserBase page was last edited in 2018 and should not be used as the authority for modern installation steps.
- Import and export lists do not guarantee feature-by-feature fidelity.
- The Flathub package is Calligra, not clearly a minimal Karbon-only installation.
Verdict
Karbon is a capable, free Linux vector editor—not a historical relic and not a universal Illustrator replacement. Its strongest case is a local workflow involving KDE, Calligra, SVG or ODG documents, layers, snapping, path editing, and ordinary vector export. Start with Karbon if those requirements match your environment. Choose Inkscape for a broader cross-platform SVG ecosystem, or Figma when collaboration and browser access matter more than local GPL software.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Karbon free?
Yes. KDE lists Karbon under the GPL-2.0-or-later license, and it does not require a paid subscription.
Is Karbon the same as Calligra?
No. Karbon is one application within the Calligra suite. Some Linux packages expose it separately, while the Flathub listing is for the broader Calligra package.
Can Karbon replace Inkscape?
It can replace Inkscape for many Linux-based vector-editing tasks, but Inkscape has broader platform coverage and a more explicitly SVG-centered ecosystem. The better choice depends on your files and workflow.
Does Karbon run on Windows or macOS?
Linux is the clearly documented current platform. Calligra says Windows support is still being developed, and no equivalent current official macOS distribution was established here.
