An .ai file is an Adobe Illustrator Artwork file, not an artificial-intelligence file. For full editing, open it in Adobe Illustrator: choose File > Open, select the file, and review any font, linked-image, color, or compatibility warnings. If you only need to view or print the design, ask for a PDF instead; SVG, PNG, or JPG may be better for web or image use.
What is an AI file?
AI is Adobe Illustrator’s native artwork format. It is primarily vector-based, so paths and shapes can scale without the pixelation associated with raster images. An AI document can also contain text, Illustrator effects, artboards, embedded or linked photographs, and other application-specific objects. Some later AI files can include bitmap information as well as vector artwork (CorelDRAW documentation).
AI is not interchangeable with PDF, SVG, PNG, or JPG:

- PDF: usually best for viewing, proofing, and printing.

- PNG/JPG: raster images for previews and placement, not object-level editing.
Open an AI file in Adobe Illustrator
Illustrator is the most reliable choice for preserving the document’s layers, paths, typography, artboards, and effects. Adobe lists .ai and .ait as supported file types under File > Open (Adobe’s supported-format list).

- Install and launch Adobe Illustrator.
- Choose File > Open.
- Select the
.aifile and click Open. - Read warnings about missing fonts, linked files, color profiles, or effects. Keep the original document settings unless the sender tells you otherwise.
- Save a working copy before editing so the received original remains unchanged.
On Windows or macOS, you can also right-click (or Control-click) the file, choose Open with, and select Illustrator. Menu wording varies by operating-system version.
Illustrator is paid software. The U.S. plan page displayed US$22.99 per month for an individual annual plan billed monthly and a seven-day trial on August 18, 2026; prices, taxes, promotions, billing terms, and regional availability can change (plans; trial).
Open an AI file without Illustrator
Alternative software may display or import an AI file, but “opens” does not necessarily mean “preserves the original.” Version, save settings, fonts, linked assets, and Illustrator-specific features all matter.

Using CorelDRAW
- Open CorelDRAW and create or open a document.
- Choose File > Import (some editions label this Import/Place).
- Select the AI file and click Import.
- Click or drag on the page to place it.
- If prompted, choose whether text remains text or becomes curves.

Can Photoshop open AI?
Photoshop is a raster editor, not a substitute for Illustrator. When an AI file is opened through its PDF-compatible representation, Photoshop commonly asks for rasterization. The result can be a pixel-based image rather than editable Illustrator paths, layers, text, or effects. Use Illustrator when the vector structure matters.
Can Acrobat or a PDF viewer open AI?
Some AI files were saved with a PDF-compatible portion, but this is not guaranteed. Do not rename .ai to .pdf and assume conversion has occurred. Ask the sender to export a real PDF, or open the original in Illustrator first. Adobe community guidance discusses the distinction between PDF-compatible and non-compatible AI files (Adobe Community).
Viewing AI artwork on a phone, tablet, or in a browser
For simple mobile viewing, a PDF or PNG is usually more dependable than the original AI file. Adobe’s current Illustrator plan includes desktop, iPad, and web access, but features and file support can vary by account, device, and workflow (Adobe plan details). Use desktop Illustrator for production editing. Avoid uploading confidential client, packaging, logo, or unpublished artwork to an unverified online converter; conversion quality, privacy terms, file-size limits, and pricing vary.
When an AI file will not open
- Download or copy it again; a partial transfer can corrupt the file.
- Confirm that the filename really ends in
.aiand that it is not merely mislabeled. - Ask which Illustrator version created it. Request a backward-compatible save if your installation is older.
- Try a duplicate, never the only original.
- Ask the sender to resend it as a ZIP archive, or provide a PDF for immediate viewing.
- Request an exported SVG, EPS, or PDF if you need another editing or print workflow.
- If Illustrator offers recovery, save the recovered document under a new name.
Renaming an extension is not conversion and can make troubleshooting more confusing.

Why the artwork looks wrong or opens blank
- Missing fonts: text may be substituted or reflowed. Ask for licensed font files or an outlined-text copy.
- Missing linked images: request the linked assets or a packaged document.
- Unsupported effects: transparency, gradients, brushes, meshes, symbols, and 3D features may import differently.
- Color differences: profiles and application color settings can alter appearance.
- Artboard or layer state: the artwork may be outside the visible area, hidden, locked, or isolated. In Illustrator, try View > Fit Artboard in Window, inspect the Layers panel, and look for hidden objects.
- Damaged structure: compare the file with a PDF proof supplied by the sender.
Large or slow files often contain high-resolution embedded photos, many artboards, complex meshes, or heavy clipping paths. Do not flatten or simplify the only original unless you are deliberately making a delivery copy.

For production handoff, request the AI file, linked assets, a PDF proof, and any color-profile or print instructions. Font licensing may prevent the sender from supplying font files; outlined text is an alternative.

Can I open an AI file for free?
You can ask the sender for a PDF, SVG, or PNG instead of buying software. Illustrator offers a seven-day trial in the U.S. offer shown by Adobe, while third-party imports may be limited or imperfect.

Browser services may convert or preview some files, but they can rasterize artwork and create privacy risks. Use a trusted desktop application or request an exported format for sensitive work.

Why are my fonts missing?
The document references fonts that are not installed on your computer. Ask the sender for licensed fonts or an outlined-text version, then compare it with a PDF proof.
Can I convert AI to SVG or PNG?
Yes, preferably by exporting from Illustrator or another trusted vector editor. SVG may change Illustrator-specific effects; PNG preserves appearance as pixels rather than editable objects.
Is an AI file related to artificial intelligence?
No. In this context, AI means Adobe Illustrator Artwork.
