Yes—Adobe Firefly can process large batches of images, and Adobe says its Creative Production workflows can scale to thousands of assets. But “Bulk Create” is not a universal tool for applying any text prompt to thousands of pictures. Firefly’s current bulk actions are preset production workflows for jobs such as removing backgrounds, cropping, and color grading. Access, per-job limits, and generative-credit charges vary by workflow and plan.

For painting businesses and other visual teams, the practical question is whether your task is repeatable—such as preparing product photos for a catalog—or whether each image needs an artist’s individual judgment. Firefly can speed up the first kind of work; the results still need review.
What Adobe means by “Bulk Create”
Adobe’s current documentation groups the relevant tools under Firefly Creative Production and bulk actions. “Bulk Create” has also been used historically for Adobe’s large-volume production capabilities, but it is not the clearest name for every current workflow. Do not confuse Firefly image processing with Adobe Express Bulk Create, which is mainly for producing many template-based designs from data.
Firefly’s bulk workflows are designed to apply defined operations consistently across a batch. They are not the same as opening the ordinary Firefly image editor and issuing one arbitrary natural-language instruction to a large folder of images. Adobe’s image editor supports text-directed edits to an image, while bulk production focuses on repeatable controls such as background, crop, dimensions, and presets.

What Firefly can do to images in bulk
| Workflow | What it does | Availability and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Remove or replace backgrounds | Remove the background, make it transparent, or replace it with an uploaded image or solid color. | Can export JPG, PNG, or layered PSD. Fine hair, glass, shadows, and complex edges may need correction. |
| Crop | Apply standard or custom dimensions to a batch. | Useful for preparing consistent product, portfolio, or campaign images; check the crop on every composition type. |
| Color Grade | Apply a consistent color treatment to multiple assets. | May not be appropriate where faithful color reproduction matters, including artwork and paint samples. |
| Resize | Change dimensions with focal-point controls; optionally use Generative Expand to fill newly exposed areas. | Adobe documents this as beta and enterprise-only. Generated margins are new image content, not neutral scaling. |
| Standardize Headshots | Apply consistent cropping, color correction, and background treatments to headshots. | Supports batches up to 1,000 JPG or PNG files, according to Adobe’s help page. |
Adobe also documents bulk video reframing, but that is separate from the image-editing workflows discussed here.
How to remove or replace backgrounds in a batch
- Open Firefly in a desktop browser and select Production on the Firefly homepage.
- Choose Remove background, then upload multiple JPG, PNG, or TIFF files, or connect supported cloud storage such as Dropbox.
- Choose the treatment: transparent backgrounds, uploaded replacement images, or solid colors specified by HEX value. For uploaded replacement backgrounds, Adobe says the longest side must be no more than 8,190 pixels.
- Review the estimated output count. Multiple background treatments can create multiple outputs from each source image.
- Select Continue, choose JPG, PNG, PSD, or a combination, then select Process.
- Check progress in Job log. Download completed results there or use the emailed download link.
PSD output is useful when a person will inspect and refine the result: Adobe says it includes editable layers and a color-decontamination layer. It costs more credits than flat output, so select it only when the added editability is worth it.
Resizing for multiple formats
For the documented Resize workflow, choose Production > Resize, upload JPEG or PNG images, and inspect Firefly’s detected focal points. Adjust individual points or use the bulk controls, select preset or custom dimensions, and preview the compositions. You can turn Generative Expand on or off, name the job, choose JPG or PNG, and process it. The workflow supports up to 1,000 images per upload, with a 100 MB maximum per file, but Adobe identifies it as beta and available only to Firefly Creative Production for Enterprise users. Confirm access before building a process around it.

How many images can it actually process?
Adobe’s broad claim is that Creative Production can scale production from one image or video to thousands. That describes the platform’s production scale, not a promise that every account can put thousands of images into one upload or run every operation in one job.
- Resize: up to 1,000 JPEG or PNG images per upload; files must be no larger than 100 MB each.
- Standardize Headshots: up to 1,000 JPG or PNG images.
- Run interfaces: Adobe’s July 2026 “What’s new” documentation describes runs with up to 500 input assets. This is a separate interface and limit, not a cap or allowance for every bulk action.
Also distinguish source images from output assets. One thousand images processed at three crop sizes can produce 3,000 outputs. One thousand images with two replacement backgrounds can produce 2,000. The output estimate shown in documented workflows matters for both delivery and credit use.

Adobe’s FAQ says its core Remove Background, Color Grade, and Crop workflows are available on qualifying paid plans with premium generative AI features. The listed plan families include Creative Cloud Pro, selected Creative Cloud team and enterprise plans, Firefly Standard, Pro and Premium, selected Express plans, Express plus Firefly for Enterprise, and Acrobat Studio. Access to broader Creative Production or particular beta and enterprise workflows can require a Firefly Services or Firefly Creative Production entitlement and administrator assignment in the Adobe Admin Console. A paid plan name alone does not guarantee that every workflow will appear in your account.

Adobe’s FAQ, dated March 10, 2026, lists these charges per output asset:
| Workflow/output | Generative credits |
|---|---|
| Remove Background, flat image | 20 |
| Remove Background, layered PSD | 40 |
| Color Grade | 20 |
| Crop | 20 |
At 20 credits per output, a 1,000-output job represents about 20,000 credits. A 1,000-image job producing three crops per image could represent 60,000 credits at that rate. Layered PSD background-removal output is listed at 40 credits per asset. These are credit calculations, not dollar prices; plan allowances and prices vary and should be checked on Adobe’s current Firefly plans page. Team and enterprise buyers may need an administrator to arrange additional credits.
Where bulk processing helps—and where it needs a human
Firefly is most useful when many files need the same production treatment: preparing product images for different storefront dimensions, making a consistent set of background variants, or standardizing headshots. For a painting studio, it could help produce uniform listing images or campaign crops. It should not be treated as a reliable way to recolor a painting or a paint swatch: color grading and generated content can alter the appearance that buyers need to judge accurately.

Review is especially important in these cases:
- Background removal: fine hair, fur, wire, jewelry, glass, translucent materials, motion blur, and foregrounds close in color to the background can leave imperfect edges. Shadows may be removed when they should remain.
- Resizing: automatic focal points can miss the subject in images with multiple people, small products, off-center compositions, pets, or text and logos. Inspect and adjust points before processing.
- Generative Expand: the tool creates content in empty areas. Inspect it for artifacts, distorted text, incorrect object continuation, and brand inaccuracies.
- Color-critical work: use a calibrated, controlled photo workflow when color fidelity matters; a standardized AI treatment is not proof that a surface or artwork has been reproduced faithfully.
Large jobs also create ordinary production concerns: long processing times, large ZIP downloads, output naming, matching results back to source IDs, and partial failures. Keep source files and test a representative subset before running the full library. If only some images fail, isolate and repair or rerun that subset rather than repeating the whole job.

If you cannot see Production, confirm that you are signed into the intended Adobe account and organization, check whether your plan includes the relevant premium feature, and ask your administrator whether the entitlement is assigned. Some workflows are enterprise-only or beta, and rollout or organization settings may affect availability.
For upload problems, verify the input format, file size, image count, and any workflow-specific requirements. For example, Resize accepts JPEG and PNG, caps uploads at 1,000 images, and sets a 100 MB per-file limit. Use a desktop browser: Adobe’s bulk-action documentation says mobile is unsupported, requires a display at least 768 pixels wide, and lists English as the supported interface language. These details can change, so check the relevant help page if your setup differs.
If the credit estimate is higher than expected, count output variants—not just source files—and check selected dimensions, backgrounds, output formats, and PSD output. The interface’s estimated output total is a useful preflight check.
Firefly or another tool?
| Tool | Choose it when | Less suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Photoshop | Images need detailed retouching, compositing, manual masking, or correction of bulk-processing exceptions. | Unattended thousands-file production without actions, scripts, or other automation. |
| Lightroom | You need conventional photographic batch work: exposure, color, presets, cataloging, and metadata. | Generative background replacement, expansion, or structured production variants. |
| Adobe Express Bulk Create or Canva Bulk Create | You need many template-based social posts, ads, or branded graphics populated from data. | Image operations such as Firefly background removal, focal-point resizing, or layered PSD delivery. |
| Cloudinary | A developer team needs programmable transformations, media management, and delivery integrated into a site or app. | A no-code creative workspace for hands-on design teams. |
| remove.bg | High-volume background removal is the main requirement, especially through a service or API. | A multi-step workflow involving crop, color grade, generative expansion, or Adobe-native production. |
For a small number of difficult images, Photoshop may be faster because it gives an editor direct control. For thousands of straightforward photographic adjustments, Lightroom may be a better fit. Firefly earns its place when the batch needs supported AI-assisted production steps and the credit cost, eligibility, and review burden make sense.
Is Adobe’s “thousands of images at once” claim accurate?
Broadly, yes: Firefly’s Creative Production capabilities are intended to scale batch production to thousands. The qualification is important: there is no single unlimited Bulk Create button that applies any prompt to any number of images. Specific workflows have their own input limits, supported formats, eligibility rules, and credit charges. Use it for standardized throughput, budget for output variants, and reserve time for quality control.
