Choose Sketchbook for a clean, quick sketching workflow and drawing on iPad or Android; choose Krita for a broader desktop studio with deeper painting, comics, animation, scripting, and color-management tools. Neither is the universal winner: Sketchbook focuses on getting you drawing with minimal setup, while Krita offers more production controls in exchange for a busier interface and a steeper learning curve.
The practical difference is not simply “basic versus professional.” Sketchbook supports layers, custom brushes, PSD/TIFF workflows, and Flipbook animation. Krita’s edge is the breadth and depth of its painting and production toolset. The best fit depends on where you draw and what you need to do with the finished work.

What each app is designed to do
Sketchbook is a sketch-first drawing application for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. Its tools include customizable brushes, guides, rulers, stroke assistance, layers, and blend modes. It suits roughs, concept sketches, storyboards, illustration, and painting when you want to start drawing without first arranging a large workspace.
Krita is a free, open-source digital-painting program with strong illustration, comics, and 2D animation capabilities. Its official feature set includes more than 100 included brushes, nine brush engines, drawing assistants, vector and text tools, multiple layer types, animation, color management, PSD support, and Python scripting. Krita is most compelling when a project benefits from specialized controls and a more elaborate workflow.
Sketchbook’s focused approach is not a sign that it is only for beginners. It includes professional features such as custom brushes, masking, layered file workflows, and animation. Likewise, Krita’s larger toolset is not automatically an advantage for someone who wants to open an app and sketch.
Interface and learning curve
Sketchbook organizes its interface around drawing: a Brush Palette, Color Puck, Color Editor, Layer Editor, marking menu, guides, and rulers. That layout can make the first steps feel direct, particularly on a tablet. Its simplicity is most valuable when you want fewer decisions between opening a canvas and making marks.
Krita uses dockers and configurable workspaces to support different kinds of work. You can rearrange panels, save workspaces, and customize shortcuts; the feature set includes more than 30 dockers. This flexibility helps when you are switching among painting, animation, comics, and other workflows. It also means there are more controls to learn and more setup to do.
Neither label—“easy” or “advanced”—settles the decision. If you rarely need masks, specialized layer types, or timeline controls, those options may be clutter. If you do need them, Sketchbook’s lighter interface may feel restrictive.

Drawing feel and brushes
Both applications offer tools for making convincing marks, but no brush-count comparison can establish which one will feel better on your tablet. Sketchbook supplies familiar pencils, markers, airbrushes, paint brushes, and smudge tools, with customizable settings and support for brush resources. Krita provides a larger set of brush engines and extensive customization, including texture- and particle-style behavior, plus resource tagging and community brush packs.
- Pick Sketchbook if you mainly want conventional sketching and painting brushes with relatively little configuration.
- Pick Krita if you want to experiment with brush behavior, textures, engine settings, and a broader resource library.
Brush packs are not universally interchangeable, and the app with more presets will not necessarily produce better strokes for you. Before committing, try the brushes you expect to use with your own stylus and canvas. Check pressure response, tilt if relevant, stabilization, latency, texture, and how the app behaves while zooming and rotating the canvas. Tablet drivers and pressure curves can matter as much as the application.
Windows pressure-sensitivity check
Sketchbook’s Windows system requirements state that Windows Ink must be enabled for stylus pressure sensitivity. If pressure is missing, check the tablet driver’s installation and settings, confirm Windows Ink is enabled, review the app’s tablet settings, and test pressure inside the app. On a Windows ARM device, also check that the tablet maker provides a compatible driver.
Layers, masks, and complex edits
Sketchbook supports layers, groups, blend modes, and masking features; Premium workflows also include adjustments. That is enough for many sketches and illustrations, especially when the layer stack is straightforward.
Krita goes further for complex documents, with paint, group, vector, filter, and file layers, as well as selection masks and additional compositing options. If you routinely build illustrations from many components, use non-destructive adjustments, or need vector elements alongside painted layers, Krita is the stronger choice.
For an ordinary drawing with a few color and line-art layers, the extra depth may not change your result. For a file that must remain editable through multiple stages, it can make a substantial workflow difference.

Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.
Color management, print, and file formats
Sketchbook supports print-oriented workflows such as canvas resizing, DPI adjustment, palettes, and PDF export in supported Premium features. For ordinary illustration and print export, it may be sufficient when you set the canvas dimensions and resolution deliberately.
Krita documents a more technically extensive color workflow, including ICC profiles, LittleCMS, OpenColorIO, EXR, and HDR/scene-referred editing. If you work in a color-managed pipeline, need HDR or EXR, or have specific requirements for profiles and compositing, Krita has the stronger documented toolkit.
For editable files, Sketchbook’s native format is TIFF. A Sketchbook TIFF retains layers and Sketchbook data when reopened in Sketchbook, but another application may open it flattened. Sketchbook can also export formats including PSD, PNG, JPEG, BMP, and TIFF; PSD preserves layers and much of the document, but some Sketchbook-specific features may not carry over. See Sketchbook’s export guidance before relying on an interchange file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKrita has its own layered document format and supports PSD loading and saving, along with other production formats. However, a shared format does not guarantee that every effect or document structure survives a round trip. Before moving an important project between apps:
- Keep an untouched copy of the original native file.
- Export a layered PSD rather than overwriting the original.
- Open the exported file in the destination app and inspect masks, blend modes, text, vectors, clipping behavior, and color profiles.
- Test animation separately; do not assume PSD carries timeline data.
- Flatten only a duplicate if you need a guaranteed visual reference.
Brush settings and brush libraries also do not map one-to-one between the apps. Treat PSD as a useful exchange option, not a promise of lossless conversion.
Animation, comics, and storyboards
Sketchbook’s Flipbook supports traditional-style hand-drawn animation in supported workflows. It is useful for rough motion tests, animated sketches, and short sequences when you want animation close to your drawing workspace.

Krita is better equipped for frame-by-frame work: its animation workspace includes a timeline, onion skinning, frame timing and playback controls, audio support, and export to video or still images. It is the stronger choice for animation projects that need more than a quick test. It is not a universal replacement for dedicated animation software, particularly when a production depends on rigging, compositing, sound editing, or studio asset management.
Recommended Free Tools
For comics, Krita has the clearer advantage. Its documented tools include vector and text support, comic-panel features, speech-bubble templates, and drawing assistants. Sketchbook’s rulers, symmetry, guides, stroke tools, and layers are useful for storyboarding and visual ideation, but it is not positioned as a dedicated comics-layout application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Platforms, requirements, and mobile use
Sketchbook has an explicit product path for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. Its documented requirements include Windows 10 or 11, 8 GB memory, and an OpenGL 2.0 GPU; macOS 12 Monterey or later and 8 GB memory; Android 9 or later; and iOS/iPadOS 14 or later. Apple Pencil and Apple Pencil Pro support is listed for enabled iPad and iPad Pro models. Requirements and listed versions can change, so check the current system-requirements page for your device before installing. Features and purchase entitlements differ by platform.
Krita’s strongest and most established use case is desktop painting and production. This comparison does not assume it has equivalent iOS and Android availability or workflow to Sketchbook; verify the current official download options for your device before choosing it on the basis of mobile support.
Large canvases, high layer counts, and demanding brushes can tax memory and graphics hardware in either application. Sketchbook’s baseline 8 GB recommendation is not a guarantee that every large document will run smoothly. Test with a representative canvas and layer count, and check zoom, rotation, undo history, stabilization, pressure response, and export time before moving a major project into production.

- Sketchbook Pro for macOS: US$24.99 as a one-time purchase on the US Mac App Store, according to its store listing.
- Sketchbook mobile Premium Bundle: US$2.99 as a one-time iOS in-app purchase in the US App Store. It is not a subscription. iOS and Android purchases are separate; a purchase on one platform does not unlock the other. See the Premium Bundle terms.
- Windows consumer pricing: not established here, so check the Microsoft Store rather than inferring a price from the Mac edition.
- Direct enterprise license: listed at US$24.99 per seat per year with a 10-seat minimum for Windows or macOS; it does not cover mobile. See Sketchbook’s direct licensing page.
Taxes, regional pricing, and store listings can change. Sketchbook downloads, purchases, reinstalls, and updates are handled through the relevant app stores; the available editions are not identical across those stores.
Krita’s official application is free and open source under the GPL. Its license permits commercial creation, school and company use, copying, and modification under the license terms. A direct download can be free, while a Microsoft Store or Steam distribution may be paid; those store purchases support development and do not make Krita’s normal software model subscription-based. No registration is required, and Krita can function without an internet connection, though store builds may connect for update checks. Details are on the Krita license page.
“Free versus paid” is therefore too blunt: Sketchbook has free mobile access with paid features and paid desktop editions, while Krita is free to download directly and may also be purchased through stores.

Do not use uninstalling as your first Sketchbook troubleshooting step. Sketchbook’s support documentation warns that uninstalling and reinstalling on iOS can delete saved artwork unless it is restored from a device backup. On Android, uninstalling may remove preferences, gallery organization, brush customizations, and unsaved work. Which one should you choose?
Choose Sketchbook if…
- You want a low-clutter app that gets you drawing quickly.
- You mostly make sketches, roughs, storyboards, or illustrations with a manageable layer stack.
- You draw on iPad or Android, or value a sketching app family across mobile and desktop.
- You regularly use guides, rulers, symmetry, and stroke assistance.
- You prefer a focused application and do not need a deep animation, scripting, or color-management pipeline.
Choose Krita if…
- You want a capable desktop painting application without paying for the direct software download.
- You need advanced brushes, masks, specialized layer types, or non-destructive workflows.
- You make comics, complex illustrations, or frame-by-frame animation.
- You need Python scripting, plugins, HDR, ICC-managed work, OpenColorIO, or EXR support.
- You are willing to spend time configuring a more expansive interface.
Consider another tool if…
Your main need is page layout, 3D modeling, advanced vector design, motion graphics, cloud collaboration, or a studio-grade animation pipeline. Sketchbook and Krita are drawing and painting applications, not a complete substitute for every specialized production tool.
If you are undecided, install or try both on the device you actually plan to use. Make the same small test in each: sketch, stabilize a line, paint color under the line art, apply a mask, save a layered file, reopen or export it, and test a short animation if that matters to you. The result will reveal more about fit than a feature-count contest.
