Procreate cannot create a literally unlimited raster canvas. Its documents have finite pixel dimensions and device-dependent layer limits. However, you can create the popular “infinite drawing” effect in three different ways: a nested illustration that reveals new scenes as you zoom, a seamless tile that repeats in every direction, or an animated loop whose first and last states match.
For most people searching for this technique, the first option—infinite-zoom artwork—is the intended one. This guide explains that workflow first, then covers repeating patterns and scrolling loops without confusing them with an infinite canvas.
Choose the right kind of “infinite drawing”
| What you want | Use this method | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| A scene that reveals another scene as you zoom | Layered infinite-zoom illustration | Finite resolution and increasing document complexity |
| Wallpaper, fabric, or a repeating texture | Seamless repeating tile | Opposite edges must match exactly |
| A background that moves continuously | Seamless tile plus animation | The loop’s start and end must align |
| An open-ended workspace you can keep expanding | A dedicated infinite-canvas app | You may lose Procreate’s raster brushes and ecosystem |
Procreate’s documented iPad workflow is based on finite canvases; the standard app does not present a user-facing unlimited-canvas mode. Its canvas size and available layers vary with the iPad, pixel dimensions, color profile, and other document settings. See Procreate’s canvas documentation before committing to a large file.

- Procreate for iPad and enough free storage for a layered document.
- An Apple Pencil or compatible stylus. A finger works, but pressure-sensitive drawing is more comfortable with a Pencil.
- A planned aspect ratio and output: still image, time-lapse, video, or an interactive zoom presentation.
- A rough idea of how many nested scenes you want and where each transition will occur.
Procreate is an iPad-only app; Procreate Pocket is a separate iPhone product. The US App Store listed Procreate for iPad at $12.99 on August 18, 2026, with no subscription advertised by Procreate. Price and availability can vary by country and may change.

Plan the zoom hierarchy first
An effective infinite-zoom piece is not merely a pile of smaller drawings. It has a route through the image. Decide whether the audience will zoom inward from a large scene or zoom outward from a small detail. The construction is similar, but the focal points must be designed in that direction.
- Outer scene: the largest composition visible at the opening view.
- Transition point: a shape that conceals or contains the next scene.
- Second scene: the world revealed inside that shape.
- Further levels: repeat the device as far as the document and final output can support.
- Stopping point: a small detail, character, symbol, or visual punchline.
Useful portals include a window opening onto a landscape, an eye whose pupil becomes a city, a hole in the ground that contains another environment, a picture frame, a dark doorway, or a circular object that becomes a planet. Repeat a color, silhouette, light direction, or perspective cue between levels so the transition feels intentional.
How to make an infinite-zoom drawing in Procreate
1. Create a finite canvas
Open Procreate’s Gallery and create a canvas suited to the final presentation. A square may work well for a square social post, while a portrait or landscape canvas is better for a specific video or print layout. Do not treat 2,000 × 2,000 or 3,000 × 3,000 pixels as universal “safe” settings. Procreate shows the available layer count when you create or resize a canvas, and that number changes by device and document settings. Compatible iPad Pro models may support canvases up to 16,000 × 8,000 pixels, but your practical limit can be lower.

2. Block in the outer composition
Draw the largest scene first, leaving a clear area for the first nested scene. Keep major elements separate where possible:
- background and atmosphere;
- foreground shapes;
- the portal or transition object;
- characters and focal objects;
- lighting and effects;
- a temporary guide for the nested scene.
Separate layers or groups make corrections less destructive. Save an additional copy before major transformations or merges.
3. Mark the first portal
On a temporary low-opacity layer, sketch the boundary of the next scene. Check the portal at both the opening view and the intended zoomed view. A transition that looks attractive close up may be too small, off-center, or ambiguous at the previous level.
You can enable Actions → Canvas → Drawing Guide for 2D grids, perspective, or symmetry. Drawing Guide helps construction; it is not an infinite-canvas feature.

4. Add the inner scene without enlarging tiny raster art
Create a new layer or group and draw the next scene inside the portal. Make it large enough to remain legible at its intended viewing scale, but do not repeatedly enlarge a tiny finished painting to fill a much larger area. Raster scaling can soften edges and expose pixels.
Select the arrow icon in the top toolbar to open Transform. Its interpolation setting affects how Procreate handles pixels during scaling, but no interpolation method can recreate detail that was never present. Choose the setting appropriate to your artwork, and keep the original artwork at a usable working size.
5. Repeat the nesting process
For each additional level:
- Add a layer or group for the new scene.
- Choose a clear transition shape.
- Place and draw the smaller scene inside it.
- Toggle visibility or zoom out to check the current and previous levels.
- Save a backup before merging, resizing, or making a large transform.
Your depth is limited by resolution, layer availability, performance, detail density, and export requirements. If the layer count becomes restrictive, merge only completed, backed-up sections; simplify hidden layers; reduce dimensions if the output permits; or build separate scene documents and composite them later.
6. Render from large shapes to small details
Work in this order: thumbnails, major silhouettes, color blocks, lighting, secondary forms, texture, and final highlights. Do not completely finish one level before testing the whole sequence. The final piece must work as a chain of transitions, not just as a collection of attractive individual scenes.
Rank #4
7. Test the actual viewing sequence
Use the crop and scale your audience will see. Confirm that:
- the next scene is obvious without an explanation;
- the portal remains aligned and readable;
- important details do not disappear immediately;
- the image stays acceptably sharp;
- no layer is hidden, clipped, or accidentally transformed.
If the result is meant to be a video or interactive presentation, test the exported file, not only the Procreate canvas.

A seamless tile is a different technique. Its left edge must continue into its right edge, and its top edge must continue into its bottom edge. Any object crossing a boundary needs a matching continuation on the opposite side.

- Draw the initial elements, allowing some to cross the boundaries.
- Duplicate the artwork or work from a merged copy so the original remains safe.
- Activate the arrow icon for Transform, then use Snapping and the yellow center guides to align the duplicate. Magnetics is a separate option that helps constrain movement along an axis; it can be used with or without Snapping.
- Offset the duplicate so the original outer edges meet at the canvas center.
- Repair seams visible in the center, including soft shadows, gradients, and texture.
- Repeat the offset horizontally and vertically as needed.
- Export the tile and test it in a 2 × 2 arrangement.
Do not rely on eyeballing “exactly half” or assume snapping guarantees pixel-perfect alignment. Procreate’s guides improve placement, but the exported result still needs inspection. Move every relevant layer together; leaving a shadow, mask, or texture behind is a common cause of seams.

How to make an infinite-scrolling loop
For a still scrolling background, place identical copies of a seamless tile side by side or vertically and move them by equal increments. The end view must be identical to the start view.
For frame animation, open Actions → Canvas → Animation Assist. Its timeline, onion skinning, playback controls, and frame management help you build consistent movement:
- Prepare or import a genuinely seamless base tile.
- Enable Animation Assist.
- Create frames with consistent spacing and direction.
- Make the first and last visible states match in position, lighting, and composition.
- Preview at the intended frame rate.
- Export using an animated format supported by your current Procreate version.
Animation Assist supplies frame tools; it does not repair mismatched edges or automatically make a loop infinite.
Fix blurry, cropped, or disconnected results
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blurry inner scenes | A small raster drawing was enlarged repeatedly. | Draw inner scenes at a usable size, keep separate source layers, and treat interpolation as a pixel-handling choice—not a detail generator. |
| Transition feels disconnected | The inner scene has no visual or narrative relationship to the outer one. | Use a deliberate portal and repeat color, shape, lighting, or perspective cues. |
| Layer limit reached | Large dimensions or high-bit/color settings reduce available layers. | Merge backed-up finished sections, simplify, reduce dimensions if acceptable, or composite separate documents. |
| Artwork clipped after resizing | Crop & Resize changed the boundary, or Resample changed pixel dimensions. | Duplicate first. Use Actions → Canvas → Crop & Resize for canvas area changes; use Resample only when deliberately changing pixel dimensions. |
| Visible tile seams | Incomplete offset, off-center alignment, or a layer left behind. | Move all artwork together, use center guides, inspect at high zoom, and test the exported tile in a 2 × 2 layout. |
| Animation jumps | The first and last frames differ. | Duplicate the starting state as the ending state or plan the movement so it returns exactly to the initial alignment. |
Can Procreate make a truly infinite canvas?
Not in the ordinary sense of an unlimited workspace. Procreate’s documented product is a finite raster-document app. You can extend the illusion through nested scenes, but eventually resolution, pixels, layers, or performance become the boundary. A genuinely unlimited-feeling workspace requires a different representation or application.
If your priority is an open-ended zoomable map or visual notebook rather than painted raster artwork, investigate dedicated infinite-canvas tools such as Endless Paper or Concepts. They are alternatives for that specific need, not requirements for making an infinite-zoom illustration in Procreate.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- You selected infinite zoom, seamless repeat, or animation intentionally.
- The canvas and aspect ratio match the final output.
- Every nested scene works at its intended zoom level.
- You avoided enlarging tiny raster artwork unnecessarily.
- Backups exist before merges, resampling, and major transforms.
- A seamless tile was tested in a 2 × 2 arrangement.
- An animated loop has matching first and last states.
- You checked the exported file, not just the working document.
