For most beginners, start with Sketchbook. Choose ibis Paint X for manga and anime, Infinite Painter for a polished painting workflow, Clip Studio Paint for professional comics, Concepts for an infinite canvas, or Krita for free, desktop-style painting on an Android tablet. There is no single best app for every artist: a pixel editor, vector sketchpad and comic studio solve different problems.
This guide groups 23 options by what they do best and flags the differences that matter: phone versus tablet usability, free tiers and paid plans, stylus support, and whether an app is built for finished artwork or casual practice.

Best Android drawing apps by use
1. Sketchbook — best overall for beginners
Sketchbook is a strong first stop if you want to open an app and draw without configuring a complicated workspace. Its uncluttered approach suits pencil sketches, ink work and concept studies, and it can be used on phones as well as tablets. It is less specialized than a comic studio and may feel limited once you want more advanced workflows. See Sketchbook’s Android support resources for platform-specific help.

2. Infinite Painter — best for polished digital painting
Infinite Painter is a mobile-first painting app for phones, tablets and Chromebooks, with a more illustration-oriented toolkit than a basic sketchpad. It is a good candidate for artists who want a refined painting workflow on Android. The trade-off is that advanced use can be demanding on older hardware, and its free and paid features should be checked in the current Google Play listing.

Look elsewhere if: you need multi-page comic production or an app that is guaranteed to be fully free.
3. ibis Paint X — best for manga and anime
ibis Paint X is a feature-rich choice for manga, anime-style illustration and line art. It includes comic-oriented tools and line stabilization, and is available for both phones and tablets. Its interface can feel busy, and the free version includes advertising; paid options are available. The official pricing page lists separate free, paid and subscription options and warns that prices vary by region and store. Research checked for this article showed US Android figures of $15.99 for the paid version, $2.99 monthly and $27.99 yearly; confirm the live store price before buying.
Choose it if: manga tools and a large mobile feature set matter to you. Look elsewhere if: ads or a dense interface get in the way of drawing.
4. Clip Studio Paint — best for professional comics and illustration
Clip Studio Paint is aimed at artists who need comic and manga production tools, including panel and speech-balloon workflows, along with illustration features such as vector layers and 3D references. The Android version uses subscriptions, and the interface has more to learn than a beginner sketch app. The official product page distinguishes PRO, oriented toward illustration and comics, from EX, which adds capabilities for multi-page comics and animation. Android plans and offers vary by region and billing period.

Choose it if: you make comics, manga, webtoons or production illustration and will use its specialist tools. Look elsewhere if: you want occasional doodling or will not pay a subscription.
5. Krita — best free power option for tablets
Krita is free and open source, with a desktop-style painting feature set. Its Android qualification is important: the project describes the Android build as beta and intended for tablets and Chromebooks, not phones. The interface can be awkward on a small screen. Krita’s July 2026 release notes also say Android animation import and export had been removed temporarily. Check current release notes if animation matters to your workflow.

6. Concepts — best for an infinite canvas
Concepts is designed for visual thinking: sketching plans, mapping ideas, drawing diagrams and developing product or architectural concepts across a large, flexible canvas. Its vector-based strokes and precision tools make it different from a conventional raster painting app. The free tier may be limited and advanced features may require payment; consult Concepts’ current plans. For textured painting or comic-page layouts, choose a more specialized app.
7. MediBang Paint — best for comics with a cloud workflow
MediBang Paint is a comic-oriented option with a free entry point and tools suited to manga and illustration. Its cloud and multi-device features can help when moving work between devices, but cloud storage is not the same as an independent backup. Ads, account requirements and current cloud limits are worth checking before you depend on it. The company’s newer Paletta product is separate; do not confuse it with the standard MediBang Paint app. Start at the official MediBang site.
8. PENUP — best for casual drawing on Samsung devices
PENUP suits casual drawing, coloring, practice challenges and sharing. It is especially convenient for Galaxy owners using an S Pen, but it is not a replacement for a professional, layer-heavy painting or comic suite. Find product information at Samsung PENUP.
9. Tayasui Sketches — best for relaxed, traditional-style sketching
Tayasui Sketches focuses on approachable drawing and expressive traditional-media-style tools such as pencil and watercolor. It is a good fit for casual sketching and visual journals, rather than complex comic or production workflows. 10. Pixilart — best for community-based pixel art
Pixilart is for pixel-specific work such as sprites, icons and game-art concepts, with community and sharing features. It is not intended to feel like a natural-media painting app, and social features may not suit artists who want to keep work private. See Pixilart.
11. Sketchar — best for guided drawing practice
Sketchar focuses on lessons and AR- or tracing-style guidance, making it more of a learning aid than a final-art studio. Tracing can help you practice proportions and observe shapes, but it does not replace drawing from observation. Its learning content may involve subscriptions or paid courses. For AR guidance, you will also need a suitable camera, surface and lighting setup. See Sketchar.
12. ArtFlow — a tablet-oriented painting option
ArtFlow offers a brush-and-layer painting workflow for Android tablets. Its usefulness depends on the device, and limits on the free version, export and paid tools should be checked in the current listing. It can be a middle ground between simple sketching and a desktop-style suite. Visit ArtFlow.
13. HiPaint — consider it for a mobile painting layout
HiPaint offers a raster-painting workflow with brushes, layers and editing tools. Treat it as its own app, not a Procreate port or a guarantee of feature parity with another platform. Before committing, check its current Google Play publisher, privacy information, export options and monetization. Product information is available at HiPaint.

14. Pixel Studio — best for pixel art and small animations
Pixel Studio is designed for pixel-art tasks such as sprites, tiles and frame-based pixel animation. That focus makes it useful for game-art workflows, but a poor choice for high-resolution illustration or natural-media painting. Check Pixel Studio’s product information and current Android listing for feature and pricing details.
15. ArtRage Vitae — best for traditional-media simulation
ArtRage Vitae is aimed at painters who want a more tactile oil, watercolor, pencil or canvas-oriented experience. That emphasis makes it distinct from apps built around comics and clean line art. Traditional-media effects can require more from a device, so check compatibility and purchase terms before relying on it. Visit ArtRage.
16. PaperColor — for simple sketching and coloring
PaperColor is positioned as a straightforward choice for casual drawing, handwriting-style marks and basic coloring, not professional illustration. Several apps have similar names, so confirm the publisher and exact listing before installing. Ads or locked tools may affect the free experience. Use the Google Play search to inspect the current options.
17. Drawing Desk — for children and casual creative activities
Drawing Desk is oriented toward accessible drawing and coloring activities rather than production-ready layered art. If a child will use it, review advertising, in-app purchases, account requirements and privacy details first, and enable purchase protections on the device. See Drawing Desk.

20. MojingPaint — a mobile illustration option to vet first
MojingPaint is another layer-based painting option for mobile artists. Before choosing it for important work, verify the current Google Play publisher, update activity, export formats, privacy policy and device compatibility. Prefer the live store listing; do not install an unofficial APK just to try an app.
21. Bamboo Paper — best for visual notes and sketchbooks
Bamboo Paper has a notebook-like feel suited to handwritten ideas, visual journaling and casual sketches rather than a full professional painting workflow. Its Android availability and feature set may have changed, so check the current listing and Wacom’s Bamboo Paper page before making it part of a workflow.

22. Lake — for guided coloring rather than original drawing
Lake is a coloring-book option for people who want guided, relaxing coloring rather than a blank canvas for original art. Check Android availability, subscription terms, ads and the included catalog in your store before installing. A coloring app is a different category from a general drawing studio.

23. Happy Color — for simple, numbered coloring
Happy Color is another option for guided coloring, not for drawing original images or managing layered projects. As with any free coloring app, inspect advertising, content and purchase terms in the current Android listing, especially if a child will use it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which drawing app should you choose?
- New to digital drawing: Try Sketchbook first; consider Tayasui Sketches for a more relaxed sketching feel.
- Want a free general app: Sketchbook is a friendly starting point. “Free” features can differ by store listing, so check before relying on a specific tool.
- Want free power on a tablet: Try Krita if you accept its beta status, tablet focus and current feature limitations.
- Draw manga or anime: Start with ibis Paint X; consider Clip Studio Paint for more production-focused comics.
- Make comics or webtoons professionally: Compare Clip Studio Paint PRO and EX, and account for its Android subscription.
- Want an alternative to Procreate on Android: Infinite Painter is a strong painting-workflow candidate, but no Android app should be described as Procreate itself or assumed to have feature parity. For manga, look at ibis Paint X; for comics, Clip Studio Paint; for desktop-style painting on a tablet, Krita.
- Use a Samsung Galaxy device: PENUP is convenient for casual work; Sketchbook, ibis Paint X, Infinite Painter and Clip Studio Paint are options for more involved drawing. Krita is for tablet users willing to work with a beta interface.
- Make pixel art: Choose Pixel Studio or Pixilart, rather than a general painting app.
- Need vector shapes: Consider Infinite Design; for an expandable canvas and diagrams, try Concepts.
- Want realistic media: Compare ArtRage Vitae and Tayasui Sketches.
- Want guided practice or coloring: Sketchar is learning-oriented; Lake and Happy Color are coloring options, not drawing studios.
Free, paid once or subscription?
“Free” can mean free to install, free of ads, free of subscriptions, or free to export finished work. Those are not interchangeable. ibis Paint X has a free version with ads and paid options; Krita is free and open source, though its Android build has the qualifications above. Clip Studio Paint’s Android plans are subscriptions. Infinite Painter has a paid unlock structure, but check the live Google Play listing for its current details. Concepts, MediBang Paint and several other apps offer free entry points with potential paid tools, services or assets.
If price matters, compare the total cost over the period you expect to use the app—not only the first screen’s offer. Check the billing period, introductory pricing, renewals, regional currency and whether features you need are included. For ibis Paint X, the official product page explicitly notes regional and store variation. Clip Studio Paint’s official plan information should likewise be read for the edition and billing terms you need.

Phone, tablet and stylus: what changes?
A phone can be enough for quick sketches, coloring, pixel art and compact canvases. Sketchbook, ibis Paint X, MediBang Paint, Tayasui Sketches and PENUP are reasonable phone-oriented starting points. Tablet screens give tool palettes, layers and artwork more room; they are generally more comfortable for long sessions and larger projects. Krita’s Android build is specifically tablet- and Chromebook-oriented, not a phone recommendation.
A stylus is not required: fingers work for rough sketches, coloring and touch-ups. An active pen is much more useful for fine control, handwriting and strokes that vary by pressure. Do not assume every Android stylus supports pressure or tilt in every app. Results depend on the device’s digitizer, pen protocol, Android implementation and app support. A compatible Samsung S Pen can be a natural choice on supported Galaxy hardware, but compatibility varies by model. USI pens likewise require a device that explicitly supports USI; neither standard should be assumed to work on every Android screen.
Check these features before committing to an app
- Layers: Look for the layer count and whether the app supports groups, masks, clipping, alpha lock and blend modes if your workflow needs them.
- Files and export: Check whether the app supports its own editable project format as well as PNG or JPEG. Some workflows may need TIFF, PDF, SVG or layered PSD export.
- PSD compatibility: Clip Studio Paint explicitly advertises PSD and PSB layer handling. Importing a PSD is not the same as preserving every feature on a round trip. Text layers, masks, blend modes, adjustment layers, smart objects and color profiles may not transfer identically between apps.
- Stylus controls: Confirm pressure, tilt, palm rejection and stylus-only input on your particular device. The app may expose settings that need to be enabled.
- Cloud and backup: Separate account sync, cloud project storage, local export, automatic backup and version history. A cloud sync is not necessarily a second, independent backup.
- Animation: Distinguish frame-by-frame animation and export from a timelapse recording of your drawing process. Krita’s Android animation import/export was temporarily removed in the 5.3.3 release notes; check current support if animation is essential.
Performance, setup and troubleshooting
Canvas size and memory
There is no universal minimum RAM or storage number for drawing apps. Performance depends on canvas dimensions, layer count, brush complexity, undo history, device chipset and available memory. A basic phone is more comfortable with smaller canvases and fewer layers; a mid-range tablet can handle ordinary illustration more easily, while demanding large canvases, many layers or 3D references benefit from stronger hardware. If an app lags or crashes, reduce canvas dimensions, simplify brushes, lower undo history if that setting exists, hide or merge unnecessary layers, and close other apps. Export a backup before making major changes.
If pen pressure or palm rejection does not work
- Test the stylus in the device’s built-in notes app to check basic input.
- In the drawing app, select a simple brush and enable pressure-based size or opacity if available.
- Turn on stylus-only input or palm rejection if the app offers it.
- Check the stylus protocol and the specific device’s active-pen support; a generic capacitive pen does not necessarily provide pressure.
- Update the app and device firmware, then test with a new document.
- If possible, try another compatible drawing app before concluding that the pen or tablet is faulty.
Screen protectors, firmware problems, pairing issues and a depleted stylus battery can also affect input. Bluetooth features are not the same as pressure sensitivity, which depends on compatible hardware and app support.
Protect important artwork
Keep editable work in the app’s native project format, and export a flattened PNG or TIFF as a separate copy when appropriate. Store important files somewhere outside the drawing app as well. Before moving a layered project between apps, test a copy of the file and inspect its layer structure; do not assume an export can be reopened with every editable property intact.
Quick Recap
Before installing: a short checklist
- Is the current listing available for your exact phone, tablet or Chromebook?
- Is the app actively maintained, and is the publisher the one you intend to install?
- Are the tools you need free, or behind ads, a one-time unlock, a subscription or paid assets?
- Can you export the file formats your next workflow requires?
- Does your device support the stylus features you expect?
- If a child will use the app, have you reviewed ads, in-app purchases, account requirements and privacy information?
