Inkscape can open and import DXF files, turning supported CAD geometry into editable vector objects. Use File → Open to work on a DXF as a new document, or File → Import to place it in an existing design. Because DXF import does not guarantee that every CAD feature, layer, or unit will carry over perfectly, check the drawing’s contents and measure a known dimension before using it for cutting or other precision work.
Before you begin
- Keep an unchanged copy of the original DXF. Save your Inkscape work as a separate SVG.
- If possible, find out whether the drawing uses millimeters, inches, or another unit, and identify a dimension you can check after import.
- A clean, two-dimensional DXF is generally a better starting point than a file containing 3D solids, proxy objects, or other specialized CAD data.
Inkscape’s import documentation lists AutoCAD DXF as a supported format, including the filter name AutoCAD DXF R13 (*.dxf). The exact filter label and options can vary by Inkscape version, operating system, and importer. DXF import is not full AutoCAD compatibility: Inkscape is a vector editor, and the imported result should be treated as supported geometry rather than a complete, round-trip CAD model. See the Inkscape import-format guide and its CAD interoperability notes.
Open a DXF as a new Inkscape document
- Launch Inkscape and choose File → Open (usually Ctrl+O on Windows and Linux).
- Find and select the
.dxffile. If it is not listed, change the file-type filter to a DXF/AutoCAD option or to all files. - Click Open. If an import-options dialog appears, review its available settings. Depending on the importer, these may include DXF type, units, layers, or how certain geometry is handled. Do not expect identical controls in every build.
- Wait for the drawing to load. For a large file, processing may take a moment.
- If the canvas seems empty, use View → Zoom → Drawing, if available, or the equivalent zoom-to-drawing command in your version. The geometry may be far from the page or at a scale that makes it hard to see.
- Select objects and inspect the Objects or Layers and Objects dialog. Check for missing text, dimensions, curves, or other elements you need.
- Save a working copy using File → Save As. Choose Inkscape SVG to retain Inkscape-specific editing information or Plain SVG when interchange with other SVG software matters more. Keep the original DXF unchanged.
Inkscape’s documented DXF filter and the possibility of an options dialog are described in the import guide. Its file-format notes distinguish SVG saving from DXF output; saving an SVG does not preserve the file as an editable CAD document.

Place a DXF in an existing Inkscape design
- Open the destination SVG.
- Choose File → Import and select the DXF. The documented 1.4.x shortcut for importing bitmap or vector content is Ctrl+I, though shortcuts can vary by system or customization.
- Confirm any import options and let Inkscape place the drawing in the current document.
- If possible, put the imported geometry on its own layer. Use the Layers and Objects dialog to rename it, then lock or hide it while you add artwork, labels, or tracing on other layers.
- Save the combined work as an SVG.
If DXF is available under File → Open but not File → Import, open it as a separate document, select and copy the geometry, then switch to the destination document and paste it. Import extensions are commonly accessed through the Open or Import dialogs, but an individual format may not appear in both. See the Inkscape shortcut reference and import-extension documentation.
Verify scale, units, and position
A drawing that looks right on screen may still be the wrong physical size. DXF files can use different units, and some coordinates may be effectively unitless. Inkscape also distinguishes between document coordinates, scale, and the units displayed in controls. Changing the displayed unit alone does not necessarily rescale the geometry; the Inkscape units notes explain this distinction.
- Find a line or other object with a known source length.
- Select it and read its width, height, or length in the relevant tool controls or Transform dialog.
- Compare the measurement with the source CAD value, taking the units into account. If the values differ, check the source units and the importer settings before changing the drawing.
- If you correct the scale, scale the imported group proportionally and verify another known dimension. For a production file, check the final output in the destination CAD, CAM, cutter, or plotter software too.
For example, a source length of 100 mm appearing as 100 inches suggests a factor-of-25.4 unit mismatch. A source length of 1 inch appearing as 25.4 mm may instead be a units-display or interpretation issue. A mismatch of 10, 100, or 1,000 can point to differing unit conventions or unitless coordinates. These are clues to investigate, not universal conversion rules.

What you can edit after import
Lines, polylines, and basic paths are often useful for vector editing; some arcs, curves, and colors may also come through. Results depend on the DXF and importer. Inkscape 1.4.2 release notes specifically mention improved DXF loading, including preservation of color in POLYLINE objects. As of the project status check dated August 18, 2026, Inkscape’s wiki identified the 1.4 branch as stable and 1.5 as development; check the project wiki for later status. The 1.4.2 release notes describe the DXF change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not assume that an import preserves 3D solids, parametric features, constraints, associative dimensions, dynamic blocks, external references, complex hatches, proxy objects, manufacturing metadata, or CAD layer behavior. Text can be missing or changed if it depends on SHX or unavailable fonts or is stored as a specialized object. Curves may be approximated, and layers may be flattened, grouped, or reorganized.
If objects seem difficult to select individually, check whether they are grouped or on a locked or hidden layer. You can try Object → Ungroup on a copy. Use Path → Break Apart cautiously: it can change compound geometry. For detailed inspection, use node editing and avoid unnecessary simplification when dimensions matter.

Prepare imported geometry for cutting or plotting
Inkscape can help clean up and compose vector artwork, but a successful import is not proof that a file is production-ready. Before sending geometry to a laser cutter, vinyl cutter, CNC workflow, or plotter:
- Verify a known dimension against the source and, where relevant, the downstream application.
- Remove construction lines, stray points, and duplicate contours. Duplicate paths can make a machine follow the same line more than once.
- Check whether intended cut shapes are actually closed and whether strokes and fills match the destination software’s requirements.
- Convert text to paths if the machine workflow requires outlines, or recreate text in Inkscape if the imported font is missing or changed.
- Save the SVG working file, export or save the required downstream format, then reopen that final output in the actual CAD, CAM, cutter, or plotter software.
For tolerance-critical engineering work, machining operations, or constraint-based design, validate in CAD software rather than relying on Inkscape’s visual rendering. Inkscape describes its role in CAD interchange in its CAD interoperability documentation.
Troubleshoot common DXF import problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| DXF is missing from the file picker | The file filter hides it; the extension is unusual; the file is not actually DXF; or the installed importer is unavailable. | Choose an all-files filter, confirm the filename ends in .dxf, and try File → Open if you used Import. If it still will not load, update or reinstall Inkscape from its official distribution, or open the file in a CAD viewer to check that it is valid. |
| The canvas looks blank | Geometry may be outside the page, too small or large for the current zoom, or accompanied by a distant construction object. The file may also contain no supported 2D geometry. | Zoom to the drawing, select all and inspect the selection bounds, then check the Objects or Layers and Objects dialog. On a copy, remove distant stray objects or ask for a clean 2D export. |
| The drawing is the wrong size | The source and import may disagree about inches, millimeters, or unitless coordinates, or the source software may have applied scaling. | Measure a known reference, confirm the source units, and re-import with explicit units if the dialog allows it. If scaling manually, preserve proportions and verify the result again downstream. |
| Text is missing or changed | The DXF may use SHX or unavailable fonts, unsupported text entities, or specialized CAD objects. | Install the font where legally permitted, ask the source author to convert text to outlines, convert it in the CAD application before export, or recreate it in Inkscape. |
| Arcs, circles, or splines look wrong | Curves may have been approximated as polylines or paths, or the file may use an incompatible DXF revision or specialized geometry. | Request a clean 2D export or simplify/convert curves in the source CAD application. If offered, try a common older DXF revision such as R12 or R14 as a compatibility test, then inspect the result. Neither is universally better: older versions may lose newer entities or curve detail. Autodesk treats R12 and R14-era formats as distinct generations in its format compatibility information. |
| Layers appear merged or missing | CAD layer semantics may not map directly to Inkscape, or the importer may group or reorganize objects. | Inspect the object tree and try ungrouping a copy. For a layered workflow, request separate DXFs by layer or recreate the required Inkscape layers manually. |
| The file opens but is not editable as expected | Geometry may be grouped, locked, hidden, imported as a compound path, or approximated. | Check layer visibility and locks, ungroup a copy, and inspect paths with the Node tool. Use Break Apart only on a duplicate because it can alter compound geometry. |
When to use another program first
If Inkscape cannot load the file, the most reliable fix is often to ask the source author or CAD application for a cleaner export: 2D geometry only, explicit units, unnecessary layers and construction objects removed, and text, blocks, or splines converted if needed. A CAD viewer or application can help confirm the file is valid, inspect its units, and simplify it before import. If the goal is illustration, an SVG intermediary is usually the most natural; PDF can work, but may change editability, text, layers, or dimensions. Conversion still requires scale and geometry checks.

If you are not sure whether the product is compatible with your Phone or any help, please contact us.
For another format or a problematic file, Inkscape’s import-extension documentation notes that external tools can convert files to SVG or PDF before opening them. Choose a CAD tool when you need CAD-oriented inspection or precision editing, not because every ordinary DXF requires one.
Save without losing your source
Keep the original DXF as your source file and save your edited result as an SVG. Use Inkscape SVG for continued Inkscape work; use Plain SVG when a simpler interchange file is preferable. If you later need DXF again, export it as a separate output and check that file in the application that will use it. DXF export settings and supported entities are a separate concern from opening a DXF, so do not assume that importing and re-saving preserves the original CAD data.

Can I import a DXF into an existing SVG?
Yes. Open the SVG, choose File → Import, and select the DXF. If DXF is not listed there but is available through File → Open, open it separately, copy its geometry, and paste it into the SVG.
Can Inkscape open DWG files?
The workflow described here is for DXF. Do not rename a DWG file to .dxf; ask the source application to export a DXF or convert it using a suitable CAD tool.
Which DXF version should I use?
There is no universal best version. Try a version supported by the source and Inkscape importer; an older option such as R12 or R14 can be a compatibility test, but may discard newer entities or curve information.
Is Inkscape suitable for CNC or laser cutting?
It can be useful for cleaning and composing vector geometry, but verify dimensions, paths, and the final output in the actual CAD, CAM, or cutting software. It is not a substitute for CAD validation in tolerance-critical work.
