The dependable workflow is to prepare a clean growth surface, choose the generator that matches the subject, shape the broad hair flow before adding breakup, and shade the result with a V-Ray hair material. Use native Hair and Fur when you want a built-in guide-based system, VRayFur for fast short procedural coverage, and Ornatrix when a hero hairstyle needs deeper grooming control. For current V-Ray workflows, Chaos documents VRayHairNextMtl as the hair-specific starting point; native Hair and Fur support has a documented mr prim render-mode requirement.

Choose the hair-generation method first

Hair creation and hair shading are separate decisions. The generator makes strands or guides; the material controls how those strands reflect and transmit light. Select the generator according to the visual job, not simply the software you already have.

Requirement Recommended starting point Why
Short fur, grass, carpet or bristles VRayFur Fast procedural surface coverage with little manual grooming.
Simple stylized hair or a basic animal coat Native Hair and Fur Included with 3ds Max and offers guide styling.
Hero character hair, layered locks or deliberate part lines Ornatrix or another dedicated grooming system More strand-level and layer-level control, at the cost of another dependency.
Export to another application An Alembic- or strand-compatible system, tested in the target pipeline Interchange support varies by exporter, renderer and version.
No additional purchase Native Hair and Fur with a compatible V-Ray material path Uses the tools already supplied with 3ds Max.
Exact strand-level control Dedicated grooming plug-in Better for complex hero work than a single procedural layer.

Chaos lists procedural fur, optimized hair shaders, 3ds Max Hair and Fur, HairFarm and Ornatrix among its 3ds Max capabilities: V-Ray 3ds Max features. The current product page surfaces V-Ray 7 for 3ds Max, Update 3, but labels and compatibility can differ between installed builds.

Prepare the mesh and a growth proxy

  • Apply or verify transforms. Unapplied scale changes apparent strand length and thickness.
  • Check normals and topology. Clean, consistently oriented faces make growth direction predictable.
  • Separate growth regions. Keep scalp, skin, clothing and fur zones distinct; remove hidden interior faces that would generate invisible strands.
  • Unwrap where needed. UVs are important for directional maps, root-to-tip color and breakup textures.
  • Build a low-resolution proxy. Autodesk recommends reducing a dense source, deleting areas where hair should not grow, and using that proxy for efficient application. Parent it to the original when the object must deform or move.

Keep the proxy close enough to preserve the silhouette and surface normals, but simple enough that grooming and viewport interaction remain responsive. A proxy does not reduce the number of final strands by itself; it reduces the cost of evaluating the growth surface.

Create fur with native Hair and Fur

These paths describe the 3ds Max 2026 documentation. Your installed release may expose slightly different labels.

  1. Select the mesh or spline that will emit hair.
  2. Open the Modify panel and choose Modifier List > World-Space Modifiers > Hair and Fur (WSM). The equivalent menu is Modifiers > Hair and Fur > Hair and Fur (WSM).
  3. Begin with deliberately low density and temporary strand thickness.
  4. Define the growth area and establish broad direction with the guides.
  5. Shape the silhouette by combing, lifting, flattening or curling guides.
  6. Set approximate length and thickness, then introduce controlled kink, frizz, noise or maps.
  7. Assign a V-Ray-compatible hair material and test from a camera view.
  8. Increase density only after the flow and silhouette work at final framing.

Applying the modifier automatically adds a Hair and Fur render effect in the documented workflow: Autodesk Hair and Fur render effect. Autodesk’s 3ds Max 2026 guide explains the system and its guide-based interpolation: Hair and Fur (WSM).

Native Hair and Fur renders only from Perspective and Camera views in the documented workflow, not Orthographic views. If a render is empty, switch the active view before changing strand settings.

Direct the coat by zones

Do not comb an animal as one uniform shell. Establish separate flow regions for the face and muzzle, ears, neck and shoulders, torso, limbs, tail, belly and joints. Human hair similarly benefits from separate systems for scalp volume, main locks, short regrowth, eyebrows, eyelashes, sideburns and flyaways. This prevents one set of guides from forcing an implausible direction across changing anatomy.

Use three levels of detail

  1. Primary mass: broad guide direction and silhouette.
  2. Secondary coat: clumps, length variation and local breakup.
  3. Flyaways: sparse, irregular hairs added only after the main coat reads correctly.

A close-up groom can look convincing yet turn into visual noise at medium distance. Judge every layer through the final camera and output resolution.

Create procedural short fur with VRayFur

  1. Select a compatible mesh.
  2. Open the Create panel, choose the VRay category and click VRayFur. The button is disabled when no suitable object is selected.
  3. Adjust length, density, thickness, direction, bend and variation.
  4. Use maps or procedural textures for directional and color variation where appropriate.
  5. Assign a hair material and render a camera crop.

Chaos documents the object and its requirements here: VRayFur. VRayFur is generally simpler and often more efficient for short repeated coverage, but it is not a replacement for designed locks, braids, parted hair or hero grooming. Uniform procedural strands need directional variation and breakup or they read as plastic grass.

Build the V-Ray hair material

A generic opaque VRayMtl is a poor first choice for strand-based hair because it does not expose the behavior that makes hair highlights and color shift believable. Chaos’s current documented starting point is VRayHairNextMtl, which is intended for hair and fur and supports VRayFur, VRayOrnatrixMod and 3ds Max Hair and Fur when the latter is rendered in mr prim mode: VRayHairNextMtl documentation.

Color and highlight controls

  • For human hair, use physically meaningful melanin controls as a starting point, then tune separately for dark, light, red, gray and bleached hair.
  • Break up color from root to tip rather than assigning one perfectly uniform RGB value.
  • Vary roughness and highlight width subtly. A single identical highlight on every strand creates a synthetic sheen.
  • Use strand information or maps for controlled variation instead of randomizing until the coat becomes noisy.

VRayHairInfoTex is documented for Hair & Fur, Ornatrix, V-Ray proxy Alembic hair and VRayFur, making it useful for strand-driven color or procedural effects: VRayHairInfoTex documentation. Confirm the material and render-mode requirements for your exact V-Ray build; older tutorials may show obsolete materials such as VRayMtlHair3.

What makes hair look real

Realism comes from relationships, not a high strand count. Check these qualities together:

  • Growth direction follows anatomy and gravity.
  • Length and taper vary within believable limits.
  • Clumps form, then break apart; they do not repeat like identical tubes.
  • Curvature, kink and frizz are irregular but not chaotic.
  • Density changes between regions and does not cover every surface equally.
  • Roots, shafts and tips do not share one flat color.
  • Highlights are directional, with soft shadows between layers.
  • Scale matches the subject and the camera distance.

Reduce thickness before adding density when strands look like wires. For short fur, enough density should close gaps at output resolution, but excessive density cannot fix incorrect length or direction. Long hair needs broader clumps and stronger flow design; short fur needs restrained variation so it remains a coat rather than static.

Light and render the coat

  • Use a large soft key to reveal strand direction without making every hair equally bright.
  • Add a controlled rim or backlight to separate silhouette hairs from the background.
  • Retain enough contrast to show clumps while preserving shadow detail in the undercoat.
  • Check body-to-fur and strand-to-strand shadows under both neutral and dramatic lighting.
  • Render a small crop at the final output resolution before committing to full density.

Keep viewport display density lower than render density while grooming. Use region rendering, camera crops and separate hero/background systems to control memory. Strand count, material complexity, lighting, displacement, resolution and CPU/GPU path all affect render time; no fixed speed improvement applies to every scene. Autodesk describes native Hair and Fur rendering as tile-based, with the render effect subdividing hair boundaries into voxels to determine ray intersections: Autodesk Hair and Fur technical guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For animation, test a short frame range before final rendering. Procedural randomness, changing culling, unstable guides, insufficient sampling, motion blur and target-resolution aliasing can all cause flicker. Chaos describes V-Ray as capable of efficient, flicker-free hair rendering, but that is a product capability rather than a guarantee for every scene setup: V-Ray features.

Troubleshoot common failures

No hair appears

  • Use a Perspective or Camera view, not Orthographic, for native Hair and Fur.
  • Confirm the modifier is active and the correct renderer is selected.
  • Verify the V-Ray-compatible render mode; Chaos documents native Hair and Fur support with mr prim for VRayHairNextMtl.
  • Check that the growth-region selection is not empty and that the emitter is visible and renderable.
  • Make sure the body mesh is not hiding the strands.

The render color is wrong

Viewport display color is only an approximation and is not proof that the render material is correct. Check that the hair material is assigned to the actual hair system, that maps use the intended coordinate channel, and that the chosen render mode passes the expected material data. Autodesk documents the viewport-versus-render distinction here: Hair and Fur display color.

It looks like grass or plastic

  • Reduce thickness before increasing density.
  • Add controlled length, direction and clump variation.
  • Introduce modest kink or frizz.
  • Use a hair-specific shader with roughness and color breakup.
  • Add a short secondary layer instead of making one layer uniformly dense.

Bald patches or intersections

Inspect normals, topology, face selection, UVs and gaps in the proxy. Check whether density is adequate for the camera and whether strands are being generated inside the body. Where the silhouette matters, adjust guides or the growth surface rather than hiding defects with more density.

Renders are slow or unstable

  • Use the low-resolution growth proxy and low density during grooming.
  • Render a small region or face crop while look-developing.
  • Separate hero areas from background coverage.
  • Avoid converting millions of strands to explicit geometry unless export or shading requires it.
  • Test the final V-Ray and 3ds Max builds before committing to animation.

When native tools are enough—and when to add Ornatrix

Native Hair and Fur is a sensible choice for learning, prototypes, simple hairstyles, grass and many moderate fur coats. It is included with 3ds Max and provides guide styling without another purchase, but it is more renderer- and mode-sensitive than older tutorials imply and becomes harder to manage as layers and hero detail multiply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VRayFur is the practical choice for short, repeated surface coverage. Ornatrix is justified when the project needs complex layered grooming, intentional locks, production character hair or more precise strand control. It adds purchase, installation, version and interchange dependencies, so it is excessive for a still image of short fur. Chaos documents Ornatrix support through the V-Ray hair workflow: V-Ray for 3ds Max.

Final production checklist

  • Object scale and transforms are correct.
  • Normals, topology and UVs are usable.
  • Only intended surfaces generate hair.
  • A proxy is used where the source mesh is unnecessarily dense.
  • Broad direction and silhouette are established before breakup.
  • Length, thickness, density and variation are judged from the final camera.
  • A hair-specific V-Ray material is assigned and its compatibility mode is confirmed.
  • Root-to-tip color, roughness and highlight variation are controlled.
  • Camera crops have been rendered at target resolution.
  • Animation has been checked for flicker, culling and motion-blur artifacts.
