Apple Pencil Pro is Apple’s most capable stylus for supported iPads, and a compelling upgrade for artists who will use its pressure-sensitive drawing and new gesture controls. Squeeze, barrel roll, hover and haptic feedback can make creative work smoother, but their value depends on the apps and tools you use. For occasional notes or markup, the less feature-rich Apple Pencil USB-C may be enough. Before buying, check your exact iPad model: many older iPads cannot use Pencil Pro.
What’s new, and what does it change?
Pencil Pro keeps familiar Apple Pencil capabilities such as pressure sensitivity, tilt and double tap, while adding controls intended to reduce trips to an app’s toolbar. Apple lists its US price at $129; the Pencil is sold separately from the iPad. Its main changes are most useful when they fit a real part of your drawing workflow, rather than simply because they are novel.
Squeeze brings tools closer to hand
Compress the barrel to invoke an available action, such as showing a tool palette or undoing. You can choose an available action at Settings > Apple Pencil > Squeeze. This can be useful when changing brushes or tools without moving your drawing hand to an on-screen control. If you find yourself triggering it by accident, try a different assignment or turn the feature off.

- ADVANCED TOOLS — Apple Pencil Pro gives you ultimate creative control. Use gestures like squeeze and barrel roll to access tools, change brushes, and create strokes without missing a beat. Haptics allow you to feel shapes snap into place, and more. Use Apple Pencil hover on iPad Pro (M5 and M4) and iPad Air (M3 and M2) to preview your mark before you make it. And now you can use Find My to locate your Apple Pencil Pro.
- EASY AND NATURAL — Apple Pencil Pro does it all with pixel-perfect precision, tilt and pressure sensitivity, and low latency. Featuring a flat edge, Apple Pencil Pro allows you to change tools with just the tap of a finger. Apple Pencil Pro attaches, charges, and pairs magnetically.

And for pros, use Apple Pencil hover on iPad Pro and iPad Air (M2) to preview your mark before you make it.
Barrel roll changes a tool’s orientation
A gyroscope detects when you rotate the Pencil. With a supported tool, rolling it can change the orientation of a shaped stroke—useful for calligraphy, lettering, fountain-pen effects and brushes whose angle matters. It is not a universal brush feature: Apple documents support in Freeform, Notes and Markup for supported tools, while third-party app support varies. Check the app and brush you intend to use rather than assuming every tool will respond.
Hover previews before the tip touches
On supported iPads and in apps that make use of it, hover can show a preview of a mark or tool effect before you touch the display. Apple says Pencil hover works up to 12 mm above the screen. It can help with placement and tool selection, but what it previews depends on the app, the tool and the iPad.
Haptics confirm actions
A small vibration can confirm a squeeze or double tap. Haptics can be switched on or off in Settings > Apple Pencil. The feedback is a convenience: it can confirm an action without making you look away from the canvas, but it does not change how a brush responds to pressure.
Double tap, pressure and tilt remain important
Double tap, carried over from Apple Pencil 2, can switch between tools such as a pen and eraser. Pressure and tilt support line variation and shading in compatible tools; Apple does not publish a pressure-level count on the cited product information. These established drawing behaviors may matter more to the feel of a stroke than the new gestures themselves.

How does it feel for drawing and painting?
For artists, the strongest case is workflow control. Pressure and tilt provide the familiar expressive input, while squeeze can shorten the path to a palette and barrel roll can add orientation control where a brush supports it. Hover can help position a mark, and haptics can signal that a gesture registered. Together, these features can keep a hand moving across the canvas instead of repeatedly reaching for interface controls.
That advantage is conditional. If your drawing app does not implement the gesture or its brushes do not respond to rotation, Pencil Pro cannot add that behavior by itself. Apple’s guide describes the relevant Apple-app support and notes that third-party implementations vary. Verify the specific app and tools that matter to you before buying for a particular workflow.
The Pencil works against the iPad’s glass, not paper. A matte screen protector may change friction, but it also changes the surface you see; the result is a matter of preference, not a feature that makes Pencil Pro itself paper-like. There is no physical eraser on the back end, so erasing depends on app controls or the Pencil’s supported gestures.
Independent reviews have generally found the new controls more compelling for creative work than for basic note-taking. Creative Bloq described squeeze and haptics as promising while noting limited third-party support at the time of its review, and did not consider the features a reason by themselves to upgrade an iPad. Those are review-era observations, not a guarantee of current support in any particular app. Creative Bloq’s review

Is Pencil Pro worth it for notes and markup?
It works for handwriting, document markup and signatures, just as Apple Pencil can be used for writing and drawing in supported iPad software. Magnetic attachment, pairing and charging keep everyday handling simple on compatible iPads. Pressure, tilt, hover and squeeze can be pleasant extras, especially if you annotate frequently or move between writing and drawing tools.
For ordinary class notes, however, barrel roll is unlikely to be decisive, and squeeze may not save enough time to justify the premium over a simpler stylus. Scribble and handwriting-to-text are not Pencil Pro-exclusive breakthroughs; results depend on your handwriting and software. For long passages, typing may still be faster. Digital Camera World likewise found typing quicker for ordinary text entry in its review. Digital Camera World’s review
Find My and everyday handling
Pencil Pro attaches magnetically to the side of a compatible iPad for pairing and charging, and supports location in Apple’s Find My app. That is useful for an accessory that can easily be misplaced, but it is not a promise that every lost Pencil can be recovered. Apple’s product page confirms Find My support without specifying AirTag-style precision finding, so do not buy it on the assumption that it offers that capability.
Apple lists the Pencil at 166 mm (6.53 inches) long, 8.9 mm (0.35 inches) in diameter and 19.15 g (0.68 oz). It has no built-in physical eraser at its far end. Apple Pencil Pro product page

Which iPads support Apple Pencil Pro?
As of August 16, 2026, Apple’s compatibility listing covers the models below, with iPadOS 17.5 or later. Match the exact model—not just the screen size or purchase year—against Apple’s chart before ordering. Several generations share names and dimensions but support different Pencil models.
| iPad family | Compatible models | Source |
|---|---|---|
| iPad Pro | 11-inch and 13-inch models with M4 or M5 | Apple compatibility list |
| iPad Air | 11-inch and 13-inch models with M2, M3 or M4 | Apple compatibility list |
| iPad mini | iPad mini with A17 Pro | Apple compatibility list |
| Software | iPadOS 17.5 or later | Apple compatibility list |
The A17 Pro iPad mini is compatible, so an M-series chip is not a universal requirement. Conversely, an older iPad Pro that supports Apple Pencil 2 cannot use Pencil Pro. The 2024 launch-era reviews listed fewer compatible models; Apple’s current list is the one to use for a purchase today. iMore’s May 13, 2024 review

These are different products, not interchangeable tiers of the same stylus. The USB-C model is the practical lower-cost alternative for basic writing and markup, but it omits pressure sensitivity and several Pro conveniences. Pencil 2 remains relevant to people keeping older compatible iPads, but cannot be used on the newer Pencil-Pro-only models. Use Apple’s compatibility chart for the exact pairing. | Model | Best fit | Notable capabilities | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Pencil Pro | Artists and frequent annotators with a listed compatible iPad | Squeeze, barrel roll, haptics, Find My, pressure, tilt, double tap, magnetic pairing and charging; hover where supported | $129 official US price; works only with newer listed iPads |
| Apple Pencil USB-C | Basic notes, signatures, markup and casual sketching | Lower-cost positioning and broad compatibility | No pressure sensitivity, squeeze, barrel roll, haptics or magnetic wireless pairing and charging |
| Apple Pencil 2 | Owners of older compatible iPads | Pressure, tilt, double tap and magnetic charging | No Pencil Pro gestures or Find My; incompatible with Pencil-Pro-only iPads |
| Apple Pencil (1st generation) | Some legacy iPads | Support for a range of older iPads | Oldest feature set; pairing and charging arrangement differs by iPad |
Apple’s cited product listing gives Pencil Pro’s US price as $129. The cited material does not establish a current US price for Pencil USB-C, so check Apple or a retailer for its live price rather than relying on an old comparison. The Pro package is the Pencil only; no iPad is included. Do not assume a replacement nib, case or adapter is included unless the package listing says so. Apple’s US store listing

Should you upgrade your iPad just to get Pencil Pro?
Usually not. Pencil Pro’s gestures can be a worthwhile workflow upgrade when you already have a compatible iPad and make frequent use of supported creative tools. If your current tablet is incompatible, buying Pencil Pro means replacing the tablet as well as buying the stylus. Consider an iPad upgrade when you also want a different screen, size, storage capacity or other tablet capabilities—not just because the Pencil has new gestures. Creative Bloq reached a similar conclusion about upgrading solely for Pencil Pro’s features. Creative Bloq’s review
Who should buy Apple Pencil Pro?
- Artists and illustrators: A strong choice if your iPad is compatible and your apps use pressure, tilt, squeeze or barrel roll in tools you actually use.
- Letterers and brush-focused creators: Barrel roll can be valuable when a supported brush changes orientation, but confirm support in your chosen app.
- Frequent annotators and note-takers: Worth considering if you value magnetic charging, Find My and faster tool access; otherwise, you may not need its creative controls.
- Occasional writers, signers and casual sketchers: Compare the USB-C Pencil if you can do without pressure sensitivity and Pro gestures.
- Owners of older iPads: Keep using the Pencil generation supported by your tablet unless you have independent reasons to replace the iPad.
- People who mostly type, read or watch video: A premium stylus is unlikely to improve those uses enough to justify its cost.
Pairing and setup
- Confirm the iPad model. Check Apple’s compatibility chart and update to iPadOS 17.5 or later.
- Attach the Pencil. Place it on the magnetic charging area on the side of the compatible iPad; Apple says this attachment handles pairing and charging.
- Set up gestures. Open Settings > Apple Pencil to review available squeeze, double-tap, hover and haptic controls.
- Choose a squeeze action. Go to Settings > Apple Pencil > Squeeze and select an available action.
- Adjust haptics. In Settings > Apple Pencil, turn Haptics on or off.
If the Pencil does not pair, reattach it to the magnetic area, check Settings > Bluetooth, and leave it attached long enough to charge. If it still does not connect, restart the iPad and recheck the model and software requirements. Keep it attached to the iPad you intend to use while setting it up, particularly if it was paired with another iPad before. iMore reported pairing trouble while rapidly switching a Pencil between two review iPads; that is an anecdotal review experience, not evidence of a widespread defect. iMore’s review
Verdict
Apple Pencil Pro is best understood as a workflow upgrade, not a dramatic improvement to basic handwriting. For a painter or illustrator with a compatible iPad, its pressure-sensitive drawing plus app-dependent squeeze and rotation controls can make it Apple’s most capable Pencil. For light notes, the USB-C model may be enough. If your iPad is not on Apple’s compatibility list, check that before spending: Pencil Pro cannot turn an older tablet into a compatible one.
