Canva’s first major post-acquisition Affinity release is not a conventional “freemium” image editor. Announced on October 29, 2025, the new unified Affinity app combines the former Affinity Photo, Designer, and Publisher tools. Canva says the core professional application is free forever with a free Canva account; the subscription-style layer is primarily Canva AI, including features such as Generative Fill, Expand & Edit, and Remove Background.
For new users, that makes Affinity an unusually capable no-cost alternative to Adobe’s desktop tools. For existing Affinity v1 and v2 owners, the bigger story is the shift away from perpetual-license development and the compatibility break between legacy and new-format files.
What Canva actually launched
This is more than a renamed Affinity Photo. The new Affinity application brings together:

Canva describes one professional workspace in which users can switch between photo, vector, and layout tools. Workspaces can be customized, and projects can combine those disciplines in one application. Calling it merely an “image-editing app” understates the launch. (Canva’s launch announcement)

Is Affinity really free?
The core app is free, according to Canva. It is not presented as a time-limited trial or a deliberately crippled starter edition. You need a free Canva account to activate and download it, but Canva Premium is not required for the main photo-editing, illustration, and page-layout tools.
“Free forever” is Canva’s public product promise, not an independently enforceable guarantee. The practical distinction is:

What is behind the AI paywall?
At launch, Canva highlighted Generative Fill, Expand & Edit, and Remove Background as Canva AI Studio features available to Premium users. Canva’s later pricing information says Affinity Premium AI tools are unavailable to Canva Free users and that AI access is controlled by plan-specific allowances that reset monthly.

That means “AI is paid” is too simplistic. Canva has several AI categories, and some Canva Free allowances may exist elsewhere in the ecosystem without unlocking Affinity’s Premium AI tools. If you need frequent generative editing, compare the allowance, tool tier, and cloud-processing terms—not just the headline subscription price.
What changes for Affinity v1 and v2 owners?
The launch changes the business model as much as the price. Ars Technica reported that existing Affinity v1 and v2 applications remain usable and that downloads and activation would remain available “for the foreseeable future,” but those versions will not receive future updates.

- Files saved by the new app cannot be opened by older Affinity versions.
- The new app cannot save edits in a v1/v2-compatible format.
Before migrating an active project:
- Duplicate the original file; never use the original as your test copy.
- Inspect layers, masks, live filters, symbols, macros, text, fonts, linked assets, color profiles, and export settings.
- Save a separate new-format copy and reopen it on every production machine.
- Export a proof PDF or raster image and compare it with the legacy version.
- Keep the original v1/v2 file unchanged and leave the old application installed until the workflow is proven.
Canva lists support for PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, IDML, and other formats. “Supports” does not mean every live effect, font, blend mode, or layout detail will round-trip perfectly, so test the specific files that matter to you. (Ars Technica’s launch report)

Who should switch?
- New users: Try the free app first. It offers the three major desktop design categories without a recurring core-software bill.
- Existing v2 users with live work: Keep v2 installed, archive originals, and migrate copies project by project.
- AI-heavy users: Price Canva Premium against your expected monthly allowance and compare its controls and output with Adobe’s tools.
- Adobe studios: Run compatibility tests before replacing Creative Cloud. Adobe plug-ins, automation, color workflows, and client handoffs may remain decisive.
- iPad-first artists: Check the current iPad release and feature parity before committing. At launch, Canva described the iPad version as coming soon.
Affinity versus Photoshop and Creative Cloud
Affinity is a strong value proposition for professional desktop editing, illustration, and layout. It is not automatically a replacement for Adobe’s entire ecosystem.
Adobe’s U.S. pricing page observed during the August 16, 2026 research pass listed Photoshop at US$22.99 per month on the annual-billed-monthly option and a Photography plan at US$19.99 per month; prices and promotions can change. Creative Cloud Pro covers a much broader set of applications and services, but costs substantially more.
Choose Adobe when you depend on Adobe-specific plug-ins, established Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign production files, team administration, fonts and stock integration, or a mature cross-application ecosystem. Choose Affinity when you want a unified desktop suite, can test interchange files, and do not need those ecosystem dependencies. GIMP remains another free option, but it is primarily a raster editor rather than an integrated photo, vector, and page-layout suite.
The ownership and privacy trade-off
The old Affinity proposition was a paid perpetual license. The new proposition removes the upfront cost but adds a Canva account, Canva-controlled AI entitlements, and a new file architecture. The central risk is therefore not an immediate paywall on brushes, layers, or typography; it is dependence on Canva’s account, platform, and future pricing decisions.

Canva says Affinity content remains yours and is not used to train or develop its AI features, including content made with Canva AI inside Affinity. That is a company statement, not an independent audit. For sensitive work, also read the controlling terms and privacy policy and determine how prompts, assets, metadata, telemetry, and any third-party AI processing are handled.
The launch material confirms an account is required to activate and download the app, but it does not establish a definitive current answer about offline operation, how often accounts are checked, or what happens if an account is closed. Professionals who require guaranteed offline or account-independent access should treat those as questions to verify before standardizing on the new app.

Affinity is now an unusually capable free alternative for anyone who wants professional desktop photo, vector, and layout tools without a recurring core-software fee. The “freemium” label is only partly accurate: the main editor is free, while Canva’s AI layer is plan-dependent.
For new users, downloading and testing it is a sensible first move. For v1/v2 owners, migrate cautiously, preserve originals, and keep the legacy application available. The bargain is real—but it is a new Canva-account-based product, not simply the old perpetual-license Affinity at a lower price.
