One photo can feel calm, cinematic, joyful, nostalgic, or polished depending on its light, color, contrast, background, and crop. ChatGPT Images can edit an uploaded photo from a plain-language instruction, but it may also change details you wanted to keep. The key is to describe both the mood you want and what must stay untouched—then inspect and refine the result.
How to edit a photo in ChatGPT
As of August 2026, OpenAI documents ChatGPT Images 2.0 as available on all ChatGPT plans on web, iOS, and Android. Feature access and interface labels can change, and usage limits may apply. OpenAI lists “Images with thinking” for Plus, Pro, and Business. Check the current Images in ChatGPT help page for availability and controls.
#1 Best Overall
- Open ChatGPT on the web or in the mobile app. Start a conversation or open the Images area.
- Click or tap the + button in the prompt area, then choose Add photos & files. You can also drag an image into the text area or paste one from your clipboard.
- Upload the photo and describe the edit. The image-input FAQ lists PNG, JPEG/JPG, and non-animated GIF support, with a 20 MB limit per image.
- Review the result. For a change to one object or area, open the image, select that area, and describe the change. For a whole-image mood or lighting adjustment, give your instruction without selecting an area.
- Refine the result as needed, then save it. The image editor documents selection, aspect-ratio, undo, redo, cancel, and save controls; the exact layout may differ by platform or rollout.
Selections are guides, not guaranteed masks: OpenAI warns that an edit may extend beyond the highlighted area. Make a small, specific selection for local changes and check the surrounding pixels afterward. Generation can take a few minutes, depending on the edit.
A prompt formula that gives you more control
“Make this look better” leaves the important choices open. A more useful prompt states the feeling, the visual changes that create it, the parts to preserve, and the output you need. Copy this template and fill in the brackets:
Edit the uploaded photo to create a [mood] feeling for [intended use].
Keep unchanged:
- [subject and identity]
- [facial features, expression, pose, and proportions]
- [clothing, important objects, text, and logos]
- [composition or setting that should remain]
Change:
- [lighting]
- [color palette, contrast, or atmosphere]
- [background or specific distraction, if needed]
- [crop or aspect ratio]
Style: [photographic treatment], [realism level], [amount of retouching].
Avoid: [unwanted changes or effects].
Output: [where you will use it and any framing needs].
For portraits, products, and images containing text, “keep unchanged” and “avoid” instructions matter especially. They guide the edit but are not guarantees; inspect important details before using the result.
ChatGPT photo prompts for every mood
These are starting points, not guaranteed recipes. Replace “this photo” with a description if useful, and add a crop or intended use. Each refinement prompt makes one adjustment so it is easier to see what changed.
Calm and peaceful
Edit this photo to feel calm, peaceful, and airy. Keep the subject, identity, pose, clothing, and composition unchanged. Use soft diffused daylight, low-saturation colors, gentle highlights, subtle shadows, and a clean, uncluttered background. Preserve realistic skin texture and avoid making the image hazy or washed out.
Soft light and restrained color suggest calm without relying on a heavy effect. If the result feels faded, follow up: Keep the composition and mood, but restore a little contrast and color. Preserve natural skin tones.
Warm and joyful
Give this photo a warm, joyful mood without changing the subject or facial features. Add golden-hour light, warm but natural skin tones, slightly brighter midtones, and a lively yet realistic color palette. Keep the original setting recognizable. Avoid exaggerated orange tones, artificial smiles, or a cartoon-like finish.
Golden light and brighter midtones can lift the feeling. If warmth spills into skin or whites, ask: Keep the warm light, but reduce the orange cast and keep skin tones and white areas natural.
Rank #2
Cinematic and dramatic
Transform the mood of this photo into a cinematic, dramatic portrait. Keep the person’s identity, expression, clothing, pose, and main objects unchanged. Use directional side lighting, controlled shadows, rich but realistic contrast, a restrained teal-and-amber color grade, and subtle shallow depth of field. Do not add film grain, lens flares, or props unless necessary.
Directional light and deeper shadows create drama; the preservation rules help keep it a photo of the same person. If it becomes too dark, ask: Keep the cinematic grade, but lift the shadows enough to retain detail in the face and background.
Romantic
Edit this image with a soft, romantic atmosphere. Preserve the people, facial identities, pose, clothing, and background structure. Use gentle warm light, blush and cream tones, delicate highlights, and a subtle natural glow. Keep the result photographic and understated; avoid hearts, fantasy effects, excessive blur, or changing anyone’s face.
Warm light and a muted palette can add softness without decorative effects. If the image looks too dreamy, ask: Make the glow and blur more subtle. Keep facial details crisp and realistic.

Nostalgic and vintage
Give this photo a tasteful nostalgic film look while preserving the original people and scene. Use slightly faded colors, warm highlights, soft contrast, subtle fine grain, and a restrained vintage color cast. Keep faces and important details recognizable. Avoid heavy scratches, fake dates, oversaturated sepia, or changing historical details.
A gentle color cast and restrained grain suggest film without inventing damage. For less tint, ask: Keep the film-like softness, but reduce the warm cast and preserve the original colors more closely.
Moody and introspective
Create a quiet, introspective mood in this photo. Keep the subject, identity, pose, clothing, and composition unchanged. Lower saturation slightly, use cool shadows, soft directional light, and deeper but natural contrast. Preserve detail in dark areas and avoid making the image gloomy, underexposed, or emotionally exaggerated.
Cool shadows and gentle contrast add restraint. If the edit becomes gloomy, ask: Brighten the midtones slightly and keep detail visible in the shadows. Preserve the subdued mood.
Energetic and playful
Make this photo feel energetic, colorful, and playful while keeping the subject and scene recognizable. Increase clarity and color vibrancy moderately, use bright natural lighting, and introduce a lively palette. Keep the edit photographic rather than cartoonish. Do not add random objects, alter facial features, or distort hands.
Moderate vibrancy gives the image more lift without asking for a fantasy scene. If colors look too intense, ask: Reduce saturation and clarity slightly. Keep the bright, lively feeling natural.
Professional and polished
Prepare this photo for a professional profile. Keep my identity, facial structure, expression, clothing, and body proportions unchanged. Use even, flattering light, a clean neutral background, natural skin texture, restrained retouching, and balanced color. Remove minor distractions but do not make the image look airbrushed, artificial, or heavily edited.
Even light and a simple background are often less distracting than dramatic styling. If skin looks smoothed, ask: Restore natural skin texture and reduce retouching. Keep the lighting and background.

Give this portrait a refined editorial photography treatment. Preserve the person’s identity, facial features, pose, clothing, and body proportions. Use controlled studio-style lighting, elegant contrast, a sophisticated neutral color palette, and a clean magazine-quality composition. Keep skin texture realistic and do not change the outfit or add luxury-brand logos.
Controlled light and a considered palette create a composed look; they should not require a new outfit or branding. If the edit changes clothing, try again from the original and specify: Preserve the original clothing exactly; change only the lighting and color treatment.
Cozy and autumnal
Edit this photo to feel cozy and autumnal. Keep the subject and composition unchanged. Use warm, low-angle light, muted rust, amber, brown, and cream tones, gentle contrast, and a subtle seasonal atmosphere. Keep environmental details realistic and avoid covering the subject with leaves or adding artificial decorations.
Warm light and earthy colors suggest the season without requiring added props. If the result is too orange, ask: Reduce the orange and amber saturation while keeping the warm autumn light.
Fresh and summery
Make this photo feel fresh, bright, and summery. Preserve the original subject, identity, pose, clothing, and setting. Use clean daylight, natural greens and blues, a light color grade, and moderate brightness. Keep highlights under control and avoid an overexposed, neon, or overly tropical appearance.
Clean daylight and moderate brightness keep a summery grade grounded. If highlights are blown out, ask: Recover detail in bright areas and reduce the brightness slightly without making the photo dull.
Dark-academia or literary
Give this image a restrained dark-academia mood. Keep the subject and main scene unchanged. Use deep brown, charcoal, muted green, and warm cream tones, directional window light, textured shadows, and a refined photographic finish. Avoid gothic props, excessive darkness, fake books, or changing the person’s clothing.
Muted colors and window-like light give a literary mood without inventing a new scene. If it becomes too dark, ask: Lift the shadows and keep the original scene legible while preserving the restrained color palette.

Remove a distracting object
Remove the [specific object] from the selected area. Reconstruct the background naturally so the edit is difficult to notice. Keep the subject, lighting, shadows, perspective, and image dimensions unchanged. Do not remove nearby objects that are not selected.
Select the object if the editor allows it. Check the reconstructed area for repeated patterns, broken edges, or shadows that no longer make sense.
Replace a background
Replace only the background with [description]. Keep the person the same, including facial identity, hair, pose, clothing, proportions, and lighting direction. Match the new background’s perspective, depth of field, color temperature, and shadows to the subject.
For hair, glasses, and fine edges, inspect the cutout closely. If the person looks pasted in, ask for the background’s light direction and color temperature to match the subject.
Rank #4
Blur the background
Create a natural portrait-style background blur. Keep the subject’s face, hair edges, clothing, hands, and body outline sharp and unchanged. Use realistic depth of field rather than a flat artificial blur, and preserve the original lighting.
Improve lighting
Improve the lighting without changing the content of the photo. Lift shadows gently, control bright highlights, preserve realistic skin tone, and add soft directional light consistent with the existing light source. Do not change facial features, expression, pose, clothing, or background objects.
Restore an old photograph
Restore this old photograph carefully. Remove dust, scratches, stains, and minor damage while preserving the people’s identities, facial structure, clothing, pose, and historical details. Improve contrast and clarity conservatively. Do not invent facial features, modernize clothing, or create an excessively sharp AI-looking result.
Restoration may invent detail where the original is damaged or unclear. Treat any newly inferred feature as a generated interpretation, not evidence of what was actually in the photograph.
Colorize a black-and-white photograph
Colorize this photograph with historically plausible, restrained colors. Preserve faces, clothing patterns, architecture, objects, and the original photographic texture. Where the correct color is uncertain, use muted natural tones rather than vivid invented colors. Do not alter the people or add modern details.
Color choices are not proof of original colors. If historical accuracy matters, verify details independently and retain the unaltered original.
Clean up a product photo
Create a clean commercial product image from this photo. Keep the product’s exact shape, branding, labels, dimensions, and color accurate. Remove dust and distracting background elements, use soft, even lighting, and place the product on a simple [white/neutral/brand-color] background. Do not redesign the packaging or invent text.
Generative edits can alter labels or logos despite instructions. Check every word, mark, and product detail manually before using the image commercially.
Make a social-media crop
Reframe this image for a [1:1 square / 4:5 portrait / 9:16 vertical / 16:9 landscape] layout. Keep the main subject fully visible and preserve the important visual context. Extend or reconstruct the background only where necessary. Do not stretch, duplicate, or crop essential facial or product details.
ChatGPT Images documents aspect-ratio selection through the picker or a prompt. A new ratio may require cropping or generating extra background, so inspect the result rather than assuming no content changed.
Add negative space for text
Recompose this image for a social post with clear empty space on the [left/right/top] for headline text. Keep the main subject unchanged and maintain realistic perspective, lighting, and proportions. Do not add any text. Make the negative space visually natural rather than blank or artificial.
Add final headline text separately if exact spelling and layout are important. Generated text and edits to existing text need careful checking.
Make a profile photo from a casual snapshot
Turn this casual snapshot into a natural professional profile photo. Keep my identity, facial features, expression, hairstyle, and body proportions unchanged. Use flattering but realistic lighting, a simple background, moderate contrast, and subtle cleanup. Preserve natural skin texture and do not make me look younger, thinner, or like a different person.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to fix a bad result
Change one thing at a time. If you request a new background, a dramatic grade, skin retouching, and a crop all at once, it is harder to tell which instruction caused a problem. For complex edits, work in stages: remove a distraction, correct lighting, apply the mood, then reframe.
Best Value
- The face changed: Try
The face changed too much. Restore the original facial features and expression while keeping the lighting edit.If identity has drifted, restart from the original upload rather than repeatedly editing the altered result. - Skin looks over-smoothed: Try
Reduce retouching and restore natural skin texture, including fine detail. Do not alter facial structure. - The colors are wrong: Try
Keep the composition and lighting, but reduce the color cast. Restore natural skin tones and keep whites neutral.Name the unwanted cast if you can—for example, “reduce the orange tint.” - Clothing or accessories changed: Try
Restore the original clothing, glasses, and jewelry exactly. Keep the background and lighting changes only.Compare small details with the source image. - Hands or fingers are distorted: Try
Restore the original hand position and finger count. Do not change the hands, sleeves, or nearby objects. If they remain wrong, start again from the original and avoid a broad edit over that area. - Text or a logo is damaged: Try
Preserve all existing text and logos exactly. Do not rewrite, translate, retype, or stylize them. This is not a guarantee: verify every character manually, especially on products or promotional graphics. - The edit spread beyond the selection: Undo if appropriate, make a smaller selection, and ask for a simpler change limited to that object. OpenAI notes that a selection may not precisely constrain the edit.
- The new background does not match: Try
Keep the subject unchanged. Match the background to the subject’s light direction, color temperature, perspective, and shadow softness. - The mood is too strong: Try
Keep the same edit, but reduce its intensity by about half. Preserve realistic skin tones and natural detail.
For a second opinion on the same edit, you can ask for a version with less retouching or subtler color while preserving the parts that work. OpenAI documents undo and redo controls in the image editor, which can be preferable to layering more instructions onto an unwanted result.
Where conversational photo editing has limits
ChatGPT is a generative editing tool, not a full replacement for a professional nondestructive photo editor. It is useful for mood-driven changes, creative variations, simple background edits, and conversational iteration. A dedicated editor is a better fit when you need pixel-level masks, layers, RAW processing, precise color management, consistent brand colors, batch editing, or controlled print output.
Do not assume perfect preservation of a face, hand, logo, product label, or historical detail. OpenAI’s image-input FAQ also describes limitations involving spatial precision, rotated text, panoramas and fisheye images, resizing, approximate counting, and image metadata. Important text and fine details should be checked at full size; generated or restored details should not be treated as factual evidence.
For medical images, legal records, documentary evidence, or other accuracy-critical use, do not rely on a generative edit to preserve or interpret what matters. The image-input FAQ cautions against using ChatGPT for specialized medical-image interpretation. Keep an untouched original and use an appropriate expert or workflow when accuracy is consequential.
Privacy and consent before uploading
Before uploading a sensitive photo, review your account’s Data Controls and OpenAI’s current privacy terms. The File Uploads FAQ points to data-use information for uploaded content; do not assume that consumer uploads are always private or never used to improve models. OpenAI separately states that business offerings such as the API and ChatGPT Enterprise do not use customer content to improve models.
Avoid uploading confidential documents, government IDs, private addresses, medical material, intimate images, or other people’s identifying photos unless you have permission and understand the relevant settings and terms. Do not upload another person’s image for a sensitive edit without appropriate consent.
