Make Your Own Stylus With 4 Household Items (Plus Scissors)

A pen, cotton swab, foil and tape can make a basic passive stylus for many capacitive touchscreens—but scissors are needed, and it won’t replace an active pen for detailed art.

Yes—you can make a basic stylus from a pen, a cotton swab, aluminum foil and tape. It works as a passive, finger-like input for many capacitive touchscreens, so it can handle taps, swipes and rough sketches. You’ll also need scissors or a craft knife. It is not an Apple Pencil replacement: it has no pressure sensitivity, palm rejection or tilt control.

What you need

  • An empty ballpoint pen or biro with a removable ink cartridge
  • A cotton swab (Q-tip) or cotton wool
  • Aluminum foil
  • Tape

Keep scissors or a craft knife nearby; those are tools, not part of the four main materials. A pen with a front opening that holds the cotton securely is easiest to use. The screen-contacting tip should be soft and rounded, with no exposed metal or hard plastic.

How to make a cotton-swab stylus

  1. Empty the pen. Remove its ink cartridge so the front opening is clear.
  2. Cut the swab. Cut one end diagonally, leaving enough stem to fit through the pen opening. Trim to suit the pen rather than relying on a fixed length.
  3. Insert the swab. Push the cut stem through the front opening until the cotton bud protrudes slightly. It should fit securely without collapsing or sliding backward.
  4. Reassemble and check the tip. Secure the swab and make sure cotton covers every rigid part that could touch the screen.
  5. Wrap the pen in foil. Extend the foil’s conductive path from the area your fingers will hold to the swab stem or another conductive part reaching the tip. Tape it in place, folding sharp foil edges inward and keeping foil off the screen-contacting end.
  6. Dampen the cotton lightly. Touch it to water, then blot or squeeze away excess. The tip should be slightly damp, never dripping.
  7. Test it. Keep a finger in contact with the foil and try a home-screen tap, a swipe and a simple mark in a notes or drawing app.

If the swab is loose, frayed or too soft to glide smoothly, replace or reshape it before using the stylus on a display.

Alternative: use cotton wool

Cotton wool works if you do not have a cotton swab, though it can be harder to secure evenly.

Bopomofo Stylus(5 Pcs),2-in-1 Stylus Pen for Touchscreen,Capacitive Stylus
  • 【Stylus for Touch Screen】This stylus can be used on touch screen, designed to replace your fingers, the stylus can free up your fingers and provide higher sensitivity and response on the screen.
  • 【Capacitive stylus】This is a capacitive stylus (battery-free, requires no charging, and functions like a fingertip)—not an active stylus. It does not support pressure sensitivity or palm rejection. However, it allows for tapping, scrolling, note-taking, and drawing on touchscreens; if you require professional-grade drawing capabilities on an iPad, please choose an active stylus instead.
  • 【2-in-1 Stylus Pen】This stylus features two different tips: a flexible transparent disc tip and a rubber tip. Applying moderate pressure when using the rubber tip ensures full contact with the screen—especially on screens with protective films—thereby enabling stable signal transmission. The combination of the rubber tip and the disc tip offers two distinct touch experiences. Please note that the plastic piece on the transparent disc is an integral part of the tip and cannot be removed.
  • 【Works On Capacitive Touch Screens】Compatible with iPad, iPad Air/mini, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Android tablets, Kindle and smartphones. Also works over most screen protectors — glide, no scratch. The stylus is used to replace your fingers on a touchscreen, Avoid rubbing your fingers and leaving fingerprints on touchscreen devices. If it cannot be used for writing on some devices, This may be due to limitations in the settings of touchscreen devices. If you cannot find a solution, please contact us at any time, and we will help you resolve the issue.
  • 【Multiple Usage Scenarios】Whether you are taking notes in class, reviewing documents at work, drawing creative designs, or enjoying mobile games, this universal stylus pen delivers a smooth and comfortable touch experience. It is ideal for writing, sketching, annotating, scrolling, and precise screen control on tablets and smartphones. From daily tasks to creative projects, this stylus helps you capture ideas anytime and anywhere.
  1. Disassemble the pen. If its body is nonmetallic, wrap it in foil and tape the foil in place.
  2. Feed a small amount of cotton wool through the front opening. The ink cartridge or pen tip can help hold it, but make sure no rigid part is exposed.
  3. Reassemble the pen carefully, checking that the cotton does not prevent it from closing.
  4. Trim the cotton into a smooth, rounded tip and dampen it lightly. Blot away any excess water.

Too much cotton can stop the pen closing; too little may leave the cartridge or nib exposed. Do not use it unless the cotton covers every hard part that might meet the glass.

Why the foil-and-cotton trick works

A capacitive touchscreen detects changes in its electrical field, usually from a finger. The foil connects your hand to the stylus tip, and slightly damp cotton helps provide contact at the screen. Keep your fingers on the foil: without that connection, input may be weak or absent. Apple describes iPad touchscreen input as working with a bare finger or a conductive device in its iPad accessibility documentation.

What it can—and cannot—do

It can It cannot
Tap icons, swipe and scroll Pair over Bluetooth or charge
Make basic notes and annotations Provide pressure sensitivity or tilt recognition
Make simple, rough sketches Provide palm rejection, hover or device-specific shortcuts

A broad, rounded tip is usually easier for a touchscreen to detect than a very narrow one, though it will feel less precise. A soft tip can fold or drag; a hard tip can scratch. This makes the DIY version more suitable for occasional navigation or rough marks than detailed painting or regular handwriting.

Troubleshoot missed or uneven input

  • Nothing happens: Confirm the screen is capacitive, the cotton is slightly damp, your hand is touching the foil, and the foil connects to the tip assembly. Try a slightly broader tip and test a basic notes app.
  • It works intermittently: The cotton may have dried, the foil may be loose, or your hand may not be making contact. Retape the foil, reshape or replace the cotton, clean and dry the screen, then lightly dampen the tip away from the device.
  • Lines skip or jump: Loose fibers, a tip that is too soft, an uneven cut or excess water can disrupt contact. Trim the fibers, round the tip and blot it. Make sure no foil touches the glass.
  • It works in one app but not another: Apps can handle finger input differently, and some drawing tools depend on active-stylus features. Test taps in a basic notes app; pressure-sensitive brushes will not gain pressure response from this DIY tool.
  • A screen protector reduces response: Clean the protector and try a slightly broader tip. A protector can affect sensitivity, especially with a small or dry tip. Do not remove it just to make the stylus work unless you accept losing that protection.
  • The cotton is dirty or shedding: Stop and replace it. Grit in the cotton can scratch the display.

Use it cautiously

  • Stop immediately if the tip feels scratchy, catches, sheds fibers or exposes any hard material.
  • Keep foil off the screen and fold or tape down sharp edges.
  • Do not use it on a wet screen. The tip may be slightly damp, but water should not transfer to the device.
  • Re-dampen the tip away from the device, and keep it away from charging ports, speakers, buttons, seams and other openings.
  • Do not substitute keys, screws, thumbtacks or other hard metal objects. They may register touch, but can scratch or damage the display.

When a purpose-built stylus makes more sense

If you need detailed digital painting, pressure-sensitive brushes, palm rejection or dependable daily handwriting, choose a stylus designed for your device. For an iPad, check Apple’s Apple Pencil compatibility list before buying: support differs among Pencil models and iPad models. A passive DIY stylus may still work as a finger substitute, but it will not reproduce Apple Pencil features.
